Take care of those boobs!  October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

” />
Althouse doesn’t think that a good cause warrants such blatant sexism.  Me?  I just like boobs.

Although as I watched this I couldn’t help but think of my dear friend Linda.  She was convinced that her breast cancer and subsequent masectomy was God’s punishment for her vanity over her boobs.  I’m pretty sure she was being ironic, but then again, she was Catholic.  I think she would approve of this PSA.  Rest in Peace sweetheart.

The Book of Genesis

As seen by R. Crumb.

It’s really kinda funny because my brother Keith and I were big fans of underground comics back in the day, especially the work of Mr. Crumb.  We got to talking about it last week during the family reunion and we both remembered some of favorites, like The Adventures of Jesus.  So, I see this today and just had to laugh.  You can view a sampling of the work here

Hat tip:  Althouse.

Bel Air versus Malibu

No, I’m not talking about the comparitive quality of life in those fair California communities.  The video below shows what happens when a 1959 Chevy Bel Air meets a 2009 Malibu head on.  It ain’t pretty folks, but the point is well taken.  When it comes to automotive safety, we’ve definitely come a long way baby.

Remembering James Raymond Coyle

 coyle_james.gif

I am participating again on this grim anniversary in Project 2996–a memorial tribute to each of the victims of the cowardly attack on 9/11/01.

In truth, the person I was assigned to honor was not a “victim” of 9/11. Rather, he was a true hero, and lost his life in an effort to save others.  You see, Jim Coyle was a firefighter.  An off-duty firefighter who did not hesitate to answer the call when the World Trade Center was hit.

It is hard to imagine the kind of courage it took to enter that inferno, but whatever quality it is that makes men like Jim Coyle respond the way he did, Americans will always be grateful for his devotion to duty and for his sacrifice.

Here is the tribute published in the NY Times:

James R. Coyle wanted to be Luke Skywalker. But because of certain difficulties in pursuing that career path, he decided to do what he thought was the next best thing, which was fighting fires.

Sure, there was no flying across galaxies or rescuing princesses, but joining the New York Fire Department had its own rewards.

Both of his grandfathers were New York firefighters. Firefighter Coyle joined the department’s cadet program while studying at Brooklyn College. He was 22 when he graduated as valedictorian of that program on a wet June day about four years ago.

For the next three years, he worked as an emergency medical technician. He delivered a baby in the back of an ambulance. He ducked bullets in crime-ridden neighborhoods.

Last December, he completed training in the fire academy and joined Ladder Company 3 in the East Village. One grandfather gave the firefighter his old fire hat.

The last glimpse his mother, Regina Coyle, had of Firefighter Coyle was on her television set on Sept. 11, when a local television station was doing a morning show on cooking in the firehouse. He had just finished a night shift, she said, and he was there to eat meal before heading off to Chicago on vacation.

James was only 26 when he died that fateful day.  And yet, during his short time on Earth, he touched so many lives.  Please take a moment to read the comments on his legacy guestbook from friends, family and strangers.  So moving.

I obviously can’t do justice to the memory of this man that he deserves.  But I can say to Jim and all those who knew him:  You have not been forgotten.

God bless James Raymond Coyle and God bless America.

Running scared?

I found this latest ad from the Democratic National Committee quite revealing.  It seems folks exercising their first admendment rights has got them worried.  Of course, it is easier to dismiss them as an “angry mob” than to address the legitimate concerns about Obama’s policies being voiced.

Geez, I seem to recall the message from the Dem’s back in Bush’s day was that “dissent is the highest form of patriotism”.  I guess this must be another example of the “hope and change” I’ve been hearing about.

Can you give me a blowjob please?

Ahem.

Now, I’m pretty much a beer drinker.  On those occasions when a shot is called for (someone rings the bell or otherwise buys a round) I’m faced with a dilemma.  Jack Daniels is no friend of mine, and tequila kicks my ass.  So, I usually get a shot that is one part Bailey’s and one part Kahlua.  A tad sweet, but with a beer chaser not bad.  The drink is popularly known as a “blow job”.  I don’t know why.

So anyway, given that all men are basically adolescents at heart, when ordering the above referenced shot, I will invariably ask the female bartender to give me a blowjob.  Yeah, puns and double entendres are always such a hoot.  I know, I know, it’s beyond stupid and borderline (?) offensive.

Still, have you seen the new Burger King ad apparently making the rounds in the USA?

Seven inches?  Not much of a meal.

Anyway, I don’t know if this ad vindicates me or implicates me.  But the ad doesn’t make me want to rush out to BK to get my mind “blown”.

Oh by the way, we do have BK in Korea, both on the economy and on base.  Haven’t seen this ad (or the sandwich) here though.

I am anticipating some interesting Google referrals based on the title of this post.  I expect such visitors will be sorely disappointed.  I guess they’ll say what many readers say after visiting LTG: “That sucks”.

There, I have closed the loop.

No swine flew on my plane

Back home, safe and sound.  No problems on the return flight, although there was an interesting twist as we deboarded.  The Korean authorities took each passenger’s temperature.  Which is kinda funny when you think about it.  I mean, we all spent the past 14 hours breathing each others recirculated air, so I suppose if one of us had the flu, we all do now.  Anyway, I’m not one to let a little pandemic get me down.  Hopefully, those aren’t my famous last words.

I’ve got a few pictures to share of my darting adventures with Duke and Ji Young.  I really had a good time visiting them and I sure do miss having them around here in Korea.  Perhaps one day we will be reunited.  They were great hosts, and even treated me and my co-worker Mr. Kim, Yong-tae do a nice Korean dinner on Sunday in Annandale, which is Northern Virginia’s Korea town.  It was kinda funny because the name of the restaurant was Han Gang.  So, I traveled 7000 miles to eat at the Han river.  Nice place for traditional Korean barbeque by the way.

Saturday night Duke and Ji Young took me out to the Hard Times Cafe for some darts, beer, and wings.  It was all good.

We had some fun chuckin’ the darts at the cork.  Duke as my darts mentor must have been especially pleased that he taught me well, although, perhaps he was thinking that he taught me too well.  Or as he put it, he was just takin’ it easy on the old man.

Tuesday night we played a tourney at Duke’s home bar in Manassas, Addy’s.  Jim and YJ should be pleased that we dressed up in our Dolce Vita livery for the occasion.

As mentioned in an earlier post, my partner Howard and I walked away with the victory.  It wasn’t a cake walk by any means (we even had to overcome a 9-mark on 15s at one point), but we did go through the winners bracket undefeated.  A little bit different format than I’m used to–one leg of cricket only.  Doesn’t leave much margin for error.  It’s also a requirement that you chalk your darts before pulling them.  A good rule to be sure, but one I’m not accustomed to following.  Also, you don’t diddle in NOVA, you cork.  Otherwise, it was not too different.

Everybody loves a winner!

On Saturday night, Duke’s team, aka “Mom’s Brats” won the DC area “C” division championship.  They were all pretty jazzed about that.

Speaking of which, back in Itaewon during my absence the Blue Bulls took out XOX in the first round of the playoffs.  I was very pleased to hear that as I felt bad about missing a key match.  So, our championship dream is still alive.  Next up is Eberhardt, the first place team from Scrooge Pub.  Looking forward to that one as we are bearing a small grudge about their refusal to reschedule a match, resulting in a forfeit for us.  Come Monday, the best team will be decided at the oche, as it should be.  It will be tough as they have some great players, but I think the Bulls enjoy playing as the underdog.

That’s about it from here.  I’m fixin’ to drive out to the airport in Incheon to pick up a new employee.  This will be his first time in Korea, but I’m thinking if he likes it half as much as me he will be one happy camper.  Even if he doesn’t like it, I’ve filled my last critical vacancy so I’m feelin’ good about it.

Peace out.

Homeward bound

Flying out in a few hours.  Dulles to Incheon non-stop.  14 hours in the air is a long haul, but it is less wearying than having a layover part way through.

All in all it was a successful trip.  I won’t bore you with the details of my meetings with the folks from the Office of the Deputy Undersecretary of Defense–Civilian Personnel Programs.  One brief moment of controversy when I had to defend my office from attack by a DC bureaucrat, which by all accounts I successfully managed.

Also played in a dart tourney on Tuesday night with Duke and Ji Young.  Took a first place for $20 which paid half of my cab fare.  But had a great time.

And that’s it from this side of the Pacific ocean.

See you soon back in the land of the morning calm.

Happenstance

I’m at the DoD International Personnel Programs conference.  Howard Vickers is one of the attendees.  Howard currently works for Army in Japan, although he worked with me when I first came to Korea.

Anyway, last night Howard is walking to the Metro station and he passes a guy on the street.  Howard said he looked familiar, so he paused and turned around.  The guy he had passed did the same thing.

Get this:  This guy named Canady had been a Soldier in the Army with Howard.  Howard hadn’t seen him since 1986.  After they had jumped into Panama.  It seems that Howard was taking a leak and got hit in the back by sniper fire.  And Canady carried him out.  And Howard hadn’t seen him since.

I’m not sure what the odds are for a random meeting of two old battle buddies like this.  But as Howard relayed the story to me, I couldn’t help but think how cool it was that Howard finally got to thank Canady after all these years.

And I also thought “hey, this is a bloggable event”.  And so I have.

Greetings from America

Arrived on schedule with no incidents or problems along the way.

Met up with my old friend Duke and his lovely wife Ji Young last night.  It was good to see them and their lovely home.  The seem to be making a nice life together here, although Duke still dreams of returning to Korea someday.

The took me out to the Hard Times Cafe near their home in Manassas and they had a decent dart set-up.  So, we drank some beer and chucked some darts.  Heh, just like being home.

Seeing as how Duke and Ji Young live so far from my hotel I crashed in their guest room last night.  And given my state of jet lag, I’m the first person up and about this morning.  We stayed up past 0100 last night, but I was wide awake at 0600 this morning.  So, I hijacked this computer, have chucked some darts, and gone out on the deck to smoke.

Which explains why I even bothered writing this worthless post.  I’m just fillin’ the time folks.  However comfortably and well.
