Show me the money

Just another Saturday night in the Barrio.  It did start out with an amusing twist though.

Cheap Charlies is a bar I frequent on a semi-regular basis, as much because it opens earlier than most places as anything else.  I arrived a bit after 5:00 and found me a seat overlooking the highway.  I was immediately besieged by three thirsty bargirls.  Now my regular drinking companion (Maya) either wasn’t there or was otherwise occupied.  And I very rarely will purchase a lady drink for more than one girl at a time.  But before I could dismiss these vultures soiled doves GROs (guest relations officers) something unlike anything that I’ve ever experienced in a bar occurred.  The gal on my left touched my cheek, said “oh, it’s a blackhead” and asked if she could “get it out for me”.  I shrugged and said sure and she squeezed out a big one.  Then the girl on my right started exploring my face until she found a blackhead of her own to pop.  And the third girl started giving me a back rub.

They all continued on until my face was blackhead free and I was sufficiently relaxed that my resistance to purchasing multiple lady drinks was overcome.  Hey, they had earned a reward, right?  Actually, I rather enjoy having pimples popped and that hasn’t happened since my last wife dumped me.  A little strange to have such an intimate act performed in the bar, but what the hell, it was still pleasant.  Since these girls were all new (to me) my repertoire of jokes were all new as well so I shared them to polite laughter.  And that earned them a second round of drinks.  Yeah, maybe I got played like a newbie but my 1000 peso (about $20) tab seemed like a good deal to me anyway.  The girls were certainly pleased.

Now, I do try to be generous with the people I encounter.  After I left Cheap Charlies I moved over to my regular hangout, Alley Cats.  I ordered some take out food for delivery so the bargirls there could snack on chicken wings and fish and chips.  That set me back 1400 pesos and my bar tab, including several lady drinks, was another 900.  So my Saturday night cost me a total of $65 or so, a little more than normal, but not exactly a budget buster either.

There is however a fine line between generosity and being played for a fool.  I’m sure I’ve crossed that line on more than one occasion.  But you live and learn.  Hopefully.  Still, when you tend to be a free spender (or at least viewed as one) you create the perception that you are “rich”.  As such you become something of a target whenever someone has a problem.

I do maintain a budget for charity and I will help out someone in need on occasion.  The sick kid who requires medicine, the electric bill that must be paid before service is cut, overdue taxes, etc.  The tales of woe abound and obviously you can’t help everyone. I’m still trying to figure out when and where to draw the line.

Just this week I’ve had two requests for “loans”.  Now, make no mistake, a loan here means gift.  I “lent” a substantial amount of money to a “friend” in Manila, and despite repeated promises I have not had one penny of that repaid.  She’s still telling me “next week” so maybe one of these days I’ll be pleasantly surprised.  Anyway, it’s Christmas time right now which makes saying “no” to people I’m at least acquainted with all the more difficult.  And really the amounts being requested ($80. and $200.), while not exactly chump change, is not going to break the bank either.  That’s the challenge I guess.  Money I’ll blow on beer and lady drinks without a thought or care could potentially solve a worrisome problem for the women requesting these “loans”.

I don’t want to be a Scrooge nor do I want to be viewed as sucker.  I haven’t as yet decided how I’ll deal with these latest requests, but I’m leaning towards “sorry, but no”.  Or I could go totally evil and ask the hottie who needs $200 to “earn it” (you know, by working under me).  Ah, but that’s not who I am either.

Well, my Buddy loves me at least. And he don’t give a damn about money!

Stay tuned!

*Yep, turns out I used the “Show me the money” title four years ago.

Changing it up

Two years ago I was looking towards the future but I didn’t see this day coming.

Things rarely go as planned I suppose.  I certainly envisioned a life different than than the one I’m living.  But there’s nothing wrong with this one either.  It is what it is.

Got up and went through my morning routines and rituals, including a two hour walk.

As is my custom, I paused for a selfie at my favorite spot on Rizal street.

Got home, showered up, then had my driver Donny carry me out to Harbor Point mall on the old Navy base to do some shopping.  But the first order of business upon arrival was getting some lunch on.

And I had a hankerin’ for some Bulgogi.  It was actually quite good, not the best I’ve had but better than average even when compared to dining in Korea.

Then it was time to hit the bricks, well tiles as it were, and get some things done.  That’s not always an easy trick here in the Philippines.

First up was the drug store for a refill of my Albuterol inhaler.  Started at one of the big chains, Watson’s.  No dice, they suggested I try Mercury Drugs at the other end of the mall.  They also didn’t carry it and the pharmacist suggested I consult a doctor for alternatives available in the PI.  And so I will.  Not critically short yet, but I’ve been experiencing more frequent coughing spells lately and I don’t want to find myself out in the wilds unable to breathe someday.

I also need a replacement for my watch band.  None were for sale in Harbor Point (they do come included with a new watch, which of course I don’t need).  Oh well.

Then I went looking for a new screen protector for my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge phone.  “Sorry sir, none available for that model”.  Well, it just so happens that I have one with me, can you install it for me?  “Sorry sir, not allowed.”  Okay then.

I next went off to find a new printer/scanner as the one I brought with me has ceased to function properly.  And miracle of miracles I found a store that sells them and also had one I liked it stock!  So I made the purchase and felt that at least my journey was not a complete bust.

I had brought Marissa along with me and she astutely noted that Harbor Point mall sucks.  She said we should have gone to SM Olongapo mall instead.  Well yeah, and it is practically next door.  Texted my driver and we were off to SM.

First stop was a phone accessory shop but after a frantic search they also could not find an S7 Edge screen saver in stock.  I pulled mine out and asked if they’d install that for me.  “Sure, no problem sir.”  150 pesos later I was a happy camper with a phone that looks brand new.  Woot!

Success!

Then we found a shop that sold watch bands.  But only leather ones.  Which the gal said she could “cut” to fit my my watch.

But I’m partial to my metal band.  Really, all that’s wrong with it is that the clasp has been damaged and it frequently unsnaps.  I know it’s just a matter of time before it fails completely.  And then Marissa had her second bright idea of the day…”you don’t need a new band, just take this one to a watch repair shop and they can fix it.”  Why yes, I bet they could!  Will save that adventure for another day though.

And finally I insisted on buying Marissa a Christmas present.  She was shy about accepting but I know she needs a new television.  So I found a nice little smart TV that will be a good fit for her crappy apartment.  Marissa thought $250 was too much but it seemed like a good deal to me so I made the purchase.  It even came with a free digital antenna, whatever that is.

And then it was back to Barretto.  I reckon I will finish the day with some darts and beers.   Who says there’s no excitement in my life?

Off the beaten track

Had a good time exploring some new terrain yesterday.   12 kilometers and 3.5 hours with the “Walkers” will do that I suppose.  Mostly flat lands but we made up for it with distance.

I went back out to the same area this morning for some more exploration.  I won’t usually do that on my own, but at some point you just have to go for it.  Still, walking through some of the poverty-stricken shanty towns made me feel a little nervous.  I removed my debit card from the wallet and stashed it away in a different pocket just in case.  I’d be screwed without that as it is my primary source of cash here these days.  Anyway, it all went fine and I’m sure my paranoia was unjustified.  In fact, I’ve got a new 1.5 hour walk that I can now incorporate into my weekly routine.

35,000+ was a first for the Philippines.
Enjoyed scenic vistas like the Grand Canyon of the Philippines…

Life on the riverside…
Crossing over to the other side…
I actually did a return visit to this little village in Barangay Purok this morning…
Dan, aka Bum Burglar, our leader for the Walker’s hike enjoying a well-earned beer at Cheap Charlies.

Actually, that was his second beer.  Since we came back into Barretto through my subdivision, I invited the group to my house for a cold one.

I started my morning with the requisite walk with my Buddy, then headed out to Baloy Beach for some breakfast at the Blue Rock resort.  I enjoyed my favorite food from France:

The cuisine was délicieux!

Then I made my way back out to Purok for another look around.  This may be the Philippines, but it is December.  So I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised to see–

–snow tires!
99 bottles of beer on the tree, 99 bottles of beer. Take one down, pass it around, 98 bottles of beer on the tree…

The above is another good example of the creative use of trash here.  I’ve actually been quite impressed by the ingenuity of the locals, poor though they may be, in finding ways to express their Christmas spirit.

And the people are indeed full of the holiday good cheer.  Several times on my walk people would holler out from passing vehicles “Merry Christmas, Joe!” (Joe is the common term the locals use for us Yanks).   It sounds sincere and nice even to a non-believer like me.

What is not so nice is what the locals do with the garbage that is not converted to Christmas decorations.  I’ve mentioned the littering and dumping in the rivers.  And what is not thrown away inappropriately is burned, contrary to local ordinances prohibiting such fires.  The result is this:

I grew up in Southern California so I know how fucked up air pollution is. Walking past these burn pits is unavoidable because they are everywhere. The smoke really messes with my already damaged lungs.

Well, I’m a guest in this country so I try to just take a deep breath *cough cough*, relax, and accept the Filipino way.  Like it or not.

What else?  Well, courtesy of the Facebook memories feature comes this family photo from the late 1990s:

In the living years.

And I’ve been multi-tasking!  While writing this post I also baked up a batch of these:

Been quite a while since I’ve done oatmeal raisin cookies!

I might be on the bridge to nowhere, but I’ve been in worse places!

Peace out!

Hash rubdown

Greetings Earthlings.  Today I celebrate my 7 month anniversary of living in the Philippines.  So far, so good.

I’m thinking my Buddy might be on drugs! Or crazy.  Or both.

As you have come to dread expect,  I have photos from the weekly Hash to share.  But stick around, this week’s report has a little twist at the end.

A rather long trail this week. In fact, I had to shortcut it because I didn’t want to be on-trail at sundown.
On-on.
On-up. Very steep and very long ascent this time.
But as usual there were rewards waiting after all the hard work.
Subic Bay in all her glory…
Your humble correspondent (on the right) thinking “this is more my speed”…
It’s not always about what you have. These folks seemed to me to be living large. You can’t buy the happiness that comes from love of family.
The days are getting shorter and when the sun is going down and I’m still on the mountain I start getting nervous.
But with my shortcut I made it on-home at Treasure Island just as the sun was saying “my work here is done”.
At the Hash circle Demolition Derby was celebrating a birthday. In the finest of Hash traditions we made him a cake. On his head.
The Subic Bay Hash House Harriers motto is “It’s nice on ice”. Why yes, yes it is!

Okay, are you still here?  Good, here’s the lowdown on what went down after the Hash.  I mentioned in an earlier post that I was going to sponsor “Celia” at this week’s Hash.  And that’s what I did.  She’s a lot quicker on the trail (especially the uphills) but she hung back and stayed at least within visual distance most of the way.  And when we got back to Treasure Island I bought her some food.  And then things got a little strange.

Now, Jessa wasn’t working but she was still there, sitting at the bar with a girlfriend.  I of course was polite enough to go and say my hellos.  And of course she brought up the whole “holding hands with Marissa” bullshit.  But I wasn’t entertaining her faux being hurt routine.  I came back with something along the lines of “it could have been you” and then rejoined my Hash group, sitting with Celia.  Jessa sent me a message about being a “stranger” that I just blew off.

Okay, so I had won a free room at Treasure Island at the SOB last week and knowing I’d be doing the “on-home” there last night I had reserved a room “just in case”.  Keeping my options open.  Being prepared like a good Boy Scout should.  I mean, if I didn’t use it no big deal, it would have expired by the weekend anyway.  So, now I had to make a decision about what I was going to do.

After a few beers I went back over to Jessa and said, “you know I have a room here tonight.  Interested in sticking around?”  I was half serious, but mostly wanted to gauge her reaction.  Which was “why don’t you call Marissa?”  Okay then, you can’t say I didn’t try.  So, it was back to Celia.

I told her I have a room here and she responded I can’t stay all night, I have school in the morning.  I told her I was interested in that “naked massage” she had offered last time I’d seen her in the bar.  She was good with that, so off we went.

Here’s the lowdown on Celia.  22 years old.  One kid (who doesn’t live with her).  Going to trade school and learning to be a welder (I was impressed!).  Obviously she is not girlfriend material, but I was of course happy to help her earn some extra money.

I showered up and laid on the bed.  She took a shower and joined me wearing a towel.  She gave me a fair to middlin’ massage, a little erotic touching, and then I unwrapped her from the towel.  Well.  I am certainly old enough to not remember the last time I saw a naked 22 year old body.  It was nice.  We did a little cuddling and snuggling and then I told her it was time to go.

Sorry to disappoint, but that’s where the story ends.  As hot and sexy as Celia might be, she’s a dancer in a prostitution bar.  And I don’t go there.  Especially without a condom.  Which like a bad Boy Scout I hadn’t brought.

And today Celia is 2000 pesos richer ($40, about double what I would pay a stranger) and I have a nice memory.  I don’t expect I’ll be repeating the experience anytime soon.  At least with Celia.

Yesterday

All my troubles seemed so far away.  And they still do for that matter.

Anyway, I began my day with a long walk out to the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority, also known as the Freeport Zone or the old Navy base.  It’s a good hour out there along the highway and is always exciting what with the buses, trucks, jeepneys, trikes, and cars frequently encroaching on the narrow shoulder.  Honestly, that’s why I only make that hike a couple of times a month and only on Sunday morning when traffic is somewhat lighter.

But I made it alive to the Kalakayan Gate.  What’s life without some adventure?
The infamous “shit river”.   I understand it’s a lot better than it was back in the day.  Which isn’t saying much.
Heading back to Barretto and whistling past the cemetery.   I knew one false step or an errant Jeepney and I’d be joining the residents of this scenic hillside affording views they cannot enjoy.

So, I said “fuck that!” and made my way down to the beach.

The walking is easier and the distance is a little shorter going this route.  Not as visually interesting though.  No traffic noise at least!
There is this one spot where the beach is blocked by a rock outcropping.  It’s either climb over or  wade in the ocean.  Seeing as how I was wearing my hiking shoes I opted to climb.  Actually, this photo is from atop the first section, there is still one more to get over.  Which I did, none to gracefully, but successfully.

So I made it home safely, got some rest, and then headed out for the Sunday afternoon dart tourney.  Drew a strong partner and we walked away with a first place finish.

Marissa came out so I could buy her some beers to watch the action, and after darts I invited her home with me to enjoy the pot roast I’d left cooking in the crockpot.  She agreed and off we went to Alta Vista.  Along the way I got this text message from Jessa:

Glad ur happy now gwapo. And for the record john is not my bf so stop saying that …
Just saw u and marissa walking holding hands

Damn, I told you this is a small town!  Can’t get away with anything.  But yes, I am guilty of holding hands while walking along the highway.  I guess Jessa’s feelings were hurt, but it’s not like she ever gave me a chance.  For example, not once did she ever go out with me without bringing her girlfriends along.  We didn’t date, I was the sucker paying for girls night out.  The John she references is a guy I saw her with in a FB photo, so I’d tease it was her boyfriend.  I guess she didn’t see the irony.  Oh well, I wasn’t going to pursue it with Jessa regardless.  And for the record, holding hands does not a girlfriend make!

Anyway, back to the important stuff, like my pot roast.  You know, back when I was using American beef the meat came out of the crockpot so tender I could pull it apart with just a fork and some tongs.  Yesterday’s roast was still so tough after 8 hours I had to use a big ass carving knife to saw through it.  What a disappointment!  Now, the flavor was excellent and once you cut the meat into bite sized morsels it was easy enough to chew.  Just not what I’m used to, but not a total fail either.  Quite good actually.

I’ll just have to toughen up and accept that meat will not necessarily meet my expectations.

And you know, when meat quality is the biggest issue you have to complain about, life is pretty damn fine!

It’s been awhile since I’ve re-composed some song lyrics (you’re welcome!) but I couldn’t help myself this afternoon.  Feel free to sing along…

Yesterday I took a walk so far away.
All the way to the SBMA.
Oh, I walked so far yesterday.

Suddenly, I was on the beach along the sea.
I have no idea what came over me.
Oh, yesterday I walked along the sea.

Why did I have to go?
I don’t know, at home I couldn’t stay.
I still need to lose those pounds
So I took a long walk yesterday.

Yesterday I took a hike out to Subic Bay.
Dodging buses, trikes and jeeps along the way.
Oh, but I survived it yesterday.

(with apologies to Lennon/McCartney)

I’m easy…

…easy like Sunday morning.

So I’m not sure if this is the end of my week or the beginning of a new one.  It’s been so damn long since I’ve had a day off I’ve lost track.  But seriously, the days here all have a sameness about them which makes one day pretty much indistinguishable from the next.

Like my walks for example.  Sure, I try and mix them up a little.  It helps having the Hash and Sausage Walkers in that regard.  But a walk in the park or a walk on the highway is still a walk, right?  This was my week:

  • Sunday–21,000 steps (I round up/down at 500)
  • Monday–22,000
  • Tuesday–14,000 (had to do the grocery shopping and blew off the morning walk)
  • Wednesday–24,000
  • Thursday–28,000 (not sure why I was so inspired)
  • Friday–23,000
  • Saturday–25,000

All in all not a bad week’s work.  Here’s some stuff I saw along the way:

When you are full of the Christmas Spirit but can’t afford decorations.  It may be trashy but I’ll give points for creativity!
On the other hand, this trashed creek is disgusting.  All the more so because it’s the swimming hole for those neighborhood kids in the background.  I honestly do not understand the Filipino mentality when it comes to littering.  There is apparently no social stigma associated with tossing garbage whenever and wherever you please.
I understand y’all in Seoul and parts of the USA are experiencing a cold spell.  Here’s a picture of me on the beach.  It’s nicer in the Philippines!

What else?  Well, I got to feel like a proud grandpa this morning:

Good job Gracyn!

And that’s what’s cookin’ here.  Oh, and this:

A Sunday pot roast begins it’s journey in the crockpot.

Life is good.

Why in the world
Would anybody put chains on me?
I've paid my dues to make it
Everybody wants me to be
What they want me to be
I'm not happy when I try to fake it!
No!
Ooh, that's why I'm easy
I'm easy like Sunday morning
That's why I'm easy
I'm easy like Sunday morning

Coco Lips

I mentioned recently how much I *think* I’d enjoy having a girlfriend to Hash with.  And it’s not like I haven’t had opportunities, such as they are.

EDITED:  Sorry, upon reflection I deleted the photo of “Celia” and “Josie”.  I don’t know that I have any readers here in Barrio Barretto, but given the what a small town it is and my desire to avoid trouble I’m playing it safe.  Not my style to self-censor like this, but I just had a bad feeling in this case.

I don’t recall if I’ve talked about them [Celia and Josie] here before.  Shortly after I moved to the PI I met both at a Hash event and we became Facebook friends.  And not surprisingly they asked if I would be their Hash “sponsor”.  That just meant I would pay  their weekly Hash dues, which amounts to the equivalent of $3.00 each.  No big deal, glad to help.  I’d sometimes buy them some food at the after Hash gathering as well.

Anyway, back in August we did a special Hash in Angeles City and the girls asked if they could ride down with me.  Of course, I didn’t have a problem with that.  In fact, I was growing quite fond of Josie.  So I was looking forward to spending an out-of-town weekend with her.  Alas, it was not to be.

I was staying in a hotel near the bar district, and Celia and Josie were staying with “friends” on the other side of town.  I assumed we’d be meeting up at the Hash circle, but they never showed.  And afterwards I expressed my disappointment to them both.  Josie promised to make it up to me the next day, and then did the same no-show act.  And of course at that point I was done with her for good.  Apparently she got a better offer from one of the Angeles Hashers.  Anyway, I chalked it up to it is better to find out her character now as opposed to later.

Now, Celia seemed to be hooking up with a Subic Hasher, Anal Retentive.  At least he started paying her sponsorship fees, which again, was fine by me.  I don’t really know much about AR other than he is building a house in my neighborhood, I see him in the girly bars now and then, and he took my helper’s friend Gina out a couple times.  So my impression is he is not serious about having a steady girlfriend.  AR is currently visiting the USA and Celia has been contacting me via Facebook with increasing regularity.

I honestly don’t know a lot about Celia (or Josie for that matter).  Celia tells me she is going to school during the day, I’m pretty sure she has at least one kid, and now she has a new job as a dancer at a bar called Coco Lips.  She’s been pestering me to come visit her there so the other night I dropped in.  Celia wasn’t working but to my surprise Josie was dancing on stage.  Wow!

Josie looked really hot in her sexy dance costume and of course I brought her down for a lady drink.  She was friendly enough but really didn’t have much to say.  Maybe she was a little embarrassed to be working in the bar.  I couldn’t help but thinking “damn, she chooses a life of prostitution over being my girlfriend!”.  Oh well, looks like I dodged yet another bullet.

But back to Celia.  She kept after me to see her at the bar, so I made it back on Thursday.  Not as hot as Josie, but okay I guess.  I bought her a couple of drinks and she gave me a back rub.  I passed out some chocolates to the dancers and wait staff so everyone was happy.  Well, Josie was giving me this look like “aren’t you gonna buy me a drink too?”  Nope, I’m not.  Celia tells me that Josie is one of the more popular girls in the bar and gets barfined (taken out by customers) frequently.  Well, good for her.  If you are going to fuck for money it’s nice to have clients I suppose.

I left Coco Lips after buying Celia two lady drinks.  She told me she would see me at the Hash on Monday.  I guess with Anal Retentive out of town she needs a sponsor.  That’s fine.  Later she sent me a message saying next time she wants to massage me with no clothes on.  I’m not sure if she meant me or her (or both).

Anyway, I don’t have any illusions regarding what this is all about.

I’m the proverbial walking ATM.  But at least I have a good peso-nality!

Not to worry, I have no interest in Celia other than perhaps a carnal one.  But since she’s now entered the realm of prostitution it sort of puts me off on even that aspect.  I might take her up on that massage offer though.  We’ll see how it goes at the Hash this Monday.

What a life, eh?

Wimpy walker

Did the Sausage Walkers thing today. A little different in that we drove in the Hashmobile about 30 minutes out into the vast countryside and started from there. And as seems to be the norm, we took a couple of detours and dead ends before finding our way to the designated creekside lunch location for, yep you guessed it, sausages.

Alright, I must confess to having wimped out at the very beginning. There was this suspension bridge we needed to cross to get to the other side of the river. I got about half way over and it started swinging to and fro (I can handle the up and down) and I retreated. It just felt like I was going to topple over and into the river, which would have resulted in serious injury or death. So I chose discretion over valor and walked up river where the banks were less steep then waded across.

Ah well. Here’s some photos.

Let’s roll!

A view from the truck…

The bridge of my shame.

Everyone else made it across just fine. But once I reached the middle span where the handrails were ropes it just all felt so unstable to me. I took several steps, saw my life pass before my eyes, and retreated like a wimp.

After wading across down river I rejoined the group.

They didn’t laugh at me. Much.

No one home.

We only climbed one mountain today and about 3/4 way up we discovered we were going in the wrong direction and came back down….

…to walk along the river….

Trying to decide where to cross…

Ride ’em cowboy!

At our lunch site we came across the skinniest dog I ever did see. Shared my lunch with him but I doubt he’s long for this world…

Sausages roasting on an open fire. Well, bed of coals anyway…

A creek side picnic it was!

Anyway, got my steps in and saw some new sights, so it is all good.

The heart of the matter

“The life in front of you is way more important than the life behind you.”

Time for an update on my love life, and here it is:

I ain’t got one.

Which of course is not news, but this is:

I don’t give a shit.

Yep, I’m steadily progressing down the road of unfucking myself. And one of the milestones on that journey has been learning to embrace the things that I have in life and stop worrying so much about what I’ve lost. Yeah, yeah, no shit Captain Obvious. Well, sometimes the easiest lessons take the longest to learn. But I’m getting there. I’ve mostly let go of the sadness that seemed to permeate my life in Korea, and when I feel it trying to creep back in I just take a gander at the mountains and the bay, sigh, and say to myself “damn, you are a lucky bastard to be living here in paradise.” Most of the time that works.

Of course, I do miss all the good things that come with being in a relationship. But these days I also remind myself of the bullshit they bring too. I can live happily without dealing with the lies, jealousy, and betrayal that seems to be part of the relationship deal. No, I’ve not given up on love nor am I closing any doors to a possible future relationship. It’s just that I’m satisfied being free to live my life as I choose. Perhaps one day someone will choose to share this life with me, but either way I fully intend to be happy walking my chosen path.

And here’s the view from where I am today:

Marissa is still the female I spend most of my time with. I’ve assigned her to the “friend zone” and she seems to have accepted that, although I suspect she hopes for more. And yes, we are “friends with benefits” so that takes care of my physical needs. And that and drinking beer are just about all that we have in common. And that’s okay, for now at least.

Gina, my domestic helper’s friend, made a play for my affections which except for one drunken night of sex I’ve rejected. Hopefully she’s gotten the message and moved on. Moved on, but not out of my house. Turns out she doesn’t really have anywhere to go. So, when she’s not visiting her kids in Manila she stays here sleeping in Tere’s room. Gina does help out some around the house for which I pay her a small pittance. I guess that technically makes her a part time employee. She says she is applying for work in the area and I think she’s hitting the dating websites trying to snag the coveted “foreigner boyfriend”. I wish her luck with that, because it ain’t gonna be me!

Speaking of the dating sites, I had several potentials chatting me up on a regular basis. And then I realized I just wasn’t interested in pursuing any of them. I mean, they all seemed nice enough but I just didn’t care enough to be bothered with it. I knew it was unfair and unkind to string them along so I’ve basically let them all know I’m not interested. Time’s too precious to waste.

I’ve also lost interest in Jessa, although I’m not sure why. I think maybe I sensed that she just wasn’t really into me, but was attracted by the fact that I could support her (and her daughter) financially. Again, I’m better off alone than in that situation.

So what the hell do I want then? Well, I really envy the Hashers who have a girlfriend with them on trail. Not sure how to go about getting one though. I know a couple of guys are dating prostitutes dancers from the bar. Sorry, and I mean no disrespect, but that’s just not my thing. I guess I’ll just leave that Hash companion fantasy in the que sera, sera category.

And pretty much all my other female friend relationships have also done a crash and burn lately. Loraine has blocked me on social media, I rarely hear from Eva, Gem apparently is not going to repay me, and Maria’s new beau has insisted she cease all contact. It’s always good to be reminded just how much others in your life truly value you. Thanks for that ladies!

So, that’s where things stand in matters of the heart. Is it any wonder I’m one happy motherfucker? Acceptance was a long time coming but I’m almost home free now. And that’s a good thing!

There are people in your life who’ve come and gone
They let you down, you know they hurt your pride
You better put it all behind you, ’cause life goes on
You keep carrying that anger, it’ll eat you up inside

I’ve been trying to get down to the Heart of the Matter
But my will gets weak
And my thoughts seem to scatter
But I think it’s about forgiveness
Forgiveness
Even if, even if you don’t love me anymore.

Hash dash

A relatively easy 5K Hash yesterday, with only one smallish mountain to climb. The real challenge was lots of low hanging branches so I was stooped over quite a bit. And then there were these damn vines crossing the trail that had an uncanny ability to wrap around your ankles and trip you up at the most inopportune times. I didn’t fall that way but some others did. A goodly portion of the trail was through some ramshackle neighborhoods I hadn’t experienced before. Lots of kids out playing and they seemed delighted to see an old white guy walking through the ville. Here’s some pics:

The runners and walkers all loaded up on the Hashmobile, making it quite crowded indeed. The runners got off first for the “long trail”.

It’s “on-on”…

…and on up!

Pretty steep going back down and coupled with them damn vines it was treacherous in places.

Safely down to the flat lands and this peaceful pond.

Over a rickety bridge and back into civilization. Such as it is.

The straight and narrow.

A disgustingly filthy creek bed. Yeah, I can empathize with being poor, but that’s no excuse to trash your own neighborhood.

Life is hard…

That’s Tinkerbell. She was one of the runners and finally got up to me about 3/4 of the way back…

Some folks live like this…

And I live like this. “On-home” at Midnight Rambler.

We all just need to do the best we can I suppose. Life ain’t fair.

Walk on!

Facebook reminded me of the anniversary of one of the major milestones in my walking career:

It was quite a day and one that is unlikely to be repeated in this lifetime.

These days my goal is to average 20,000 steps a day and that’s something I generally achieve. Of course, much easier here than in a place like Manila. Also, doing the Hash and the “sausage walks” gets the weekly step count up.

This is the “high season” in the Philippines. Lots of tourists in town, Barretto seems to be especially popular with the Swedes for some reason. Kinda funny sometimes to see the bargirls with their boyfriends, or at least the guys who have been sponsoring them (i.e. sending financial support in their absence). Hey, I’m all about more power to them–a fool and his money are soon parted and all that. Also quite a few “two week millionaires” blowing into town and throwing big bucks around in the bars. They are very popular and then they are gone. Ha, at least it keeps the drink pressure off of me!

I can see why this is the time of year people visit. The weather has been fantastic! Not so humid, no rain, moderate temperatures, and usually a nice breeze to keep things comfortable. I guess I better enjoy it while I can because the hot months will be here soon enough.

What else? Well, my blog buddy Kevin Kim has been cooking up a storm. I’m going to see if I can up my game next time I prepare short ribs using some of his techniques. Haven’t been at all satisfied with the results I’ve been getting since the move. About the only thing I’ve cooked that is as good as it ever was is my crockpot pulled pork. Cooked up a nice big batch yesterday in fact:

Eight hours slow cooking, pulled, and ready to go…

…along with some corn-on-the-cob…

…broccoli with butter and cheese…

…and of course corn bread muffins!

Put it on a plate and eat it up! Actually, I put some leftovers in a tortilla for lunch and that was a tasty treat as well.

Hey, and speaking of Kevin “Don’t forget the hyphen” Kim, I’ve been studying up to improve my writing skills. Not that you’d know by reading my rants and ramblings here. In an effort to make the written world a better place, let me share these tips with you:

Its all their. Your welcome.

I tease of course. Sometimes it is all just a matter of perspective:

See what I mean?

Anyway, thanks for reading. Having nothing of substance to say is really quite a blessing. I’ve not been cursed with an interesting life!

I hear some people
been talkin’ me down,
Bring up my name,
pass it ’round.
They don’t mention
happy times
They do their thing,
I’ll do mine.

Ooh baby,
that’s hard to change
I can’t tell them
how to feel.
Some get stoned,
some get strange,
But sooner or later
it all gets real.

Walk on

A heartfelt SOB

Last night I attended and judged the weekly Sons of Baccus dance contest. It’s been awhile since I’ve done one, so it was a good change of pace. Sorry for the poor quality pictures, but hopefully you’ll get the flavor of the event:

The show started with all the competing dancers on the stage…

Wet Spot hosted the event this week and is the custom, their dancers went first.

Next up was the Man Cave dancers. They put on a pretty fun to watch hip hop routine….

Thumbstar is the newest bar in town. Their gals did a good job, but happened to dance to the same song as the previous dancers from Man Cave. They were simply not as hip in their hopping. Ahem.

Arizona always puts on an elaborate dance show, with costumes and props. Honestly, I prefer sexy dancing but who am I to judge. Oh wait, I AM a judge!

The girls from Lollipop did a nice job. I enjoyed their routine.

Whereas the Rum Jungle only sent two dancers and they basically just went through the motions. Well, I guess that’s what dancing is, but you know what I mean. A lack of enthusiasm.

Last up was the Hot Zone team. They were last week’s winner and they always put on a hot show. Last night was no exception…

…no ifs, ands, or butts about it!

So, on my scorecard I had Hot Zone first, Man Cave second, and Lollipop third. My fellow judges saw things differently (stupid bastards!) and the winners for the night were Alaska first, Hot Zone second, and Man Cave third.

Oh well, it was a fun evening and I came home pleasantly drunk. What a life!

Gee it’s good to be back home again…

…sometimes this old barrio feels like a long last friend.

Okay, enough with the channeling of John Denver. I’m just glad to have escaped the big city relatively unscathed. It’s not that I’m averse to city life, I loved Seoul for example. But something about Manila, even its upscale center Makati, just grates on me. So nice to have left the city sidewalks (such as they were) behind and walk the beaches again today. Got some hugs and sweet loving from my good Buddy too which warms the heart.

The trip was pretty much a fiasco–a waste of time and money. I already wrote about the Philippine Retirement Authority issues. I heard from a commenter on a possible work around as far as the money transfer goes. And another reader emailed telling me his experience with the retirement visa and it didn’t sound very encouraging. So, we’ll see how I choose to proceed. For now it will be another 60 day renewal on the tourist visa.

Last night I was supposed to meet my friend Gem at 7:00 p.m. so she could repay the $1000.00 I loaned her several months ago. Long story short, she never showed. I sat at the Cubana bar drinking beer while I waited. By 10:00 p.m. I was drunk and angry and stumbled on back to my room. I had made arrangements for my driver to fetch me at 5:00 a.m. in an effort to avoid the traffic getting out of town (today is a Filipino holiday). I set the alarm for 4:00 and Danny texted that he had arrived at 4:10. So I hustled up packing and checked myself out of the hotel. Traffic was heavy but moving steadily so that was good. Until we got a flat tire, which sort of serves as a metaphor for my wasted trip.

While waiting in the bar I took these photos of life on P. Burgos Avenue in Manila:

This is the hooker that practically stalked me every time I was out on the street. Didn’t want to take no for an answer, finally had to be rude to get her to back off. Until the next time I was outside, and then she would continue her aggressive pursuit. It got to be a pain in the ass, but even so I felt a little sorry for her.

Now this old woman was just batshit crazy. Pacing up and down in front of Cubana’s bar shouting and laughing and talking to herself. Sometimes she’d veer into the street and cars would have to dodge around her. I felt certain I was going to have to witness seeing her run over. Security tried to run her off, but she always came back. Depressing really.

And what I found most disconcerting was this young girl, what, maybe 12 years old, out on the street. No idea what was going on, I didn’t see her try and talk to anyone passing by and no one said anything to her. The woman in the background was always nearby…not sure if it is her mother or guardian or what. But I first saw them around 3:00 p.m. and they were still there at 9:00. I almost crossed the street to ask the woman to take that child home, she shouldn’t be out on the street with the hookers. But then I remembered where I was and what I am so I kept my mouth shut. Nothing good was likely to come from my getting involved. Again, if I had actually seen anything that looked the girl may be being exploited or otherwise in danger I would have alerted the authorities. Absent that, the foreigner needs to mind his own business in this country.

Did I mention it is good to be home?

Just another street walker

If you can’t beat them, join them!

No business to conduct this morning so I took a stroll around the city streets. Damn, I could not live here! Cars and horns galore. And being harassed by the prostitutes. Had a hard time getting my steps in, but I sucked it up and got it done. Leaving early in the morning and looking forward to it.

Here’s some photos I took whilst out and about.

This is my favorite hangout, the Cubana bar. I sit at a table with a nice view of the street.

And enjoy frosty cold beverages like this…

…while watching the hookers plying their trade. It was funny, a few minutes after taking this photo the guy at the next table brought the girl in shorts over for a drink/negotiation. Must have been for short time because she was back out there before I left the bar….

Ready for a game of frogger? Naw, better wait for the next signal change, these guys are rarin’ to go, horns ablaze…

It was nice to see my dog is famous here. Even has a restaurant named after him…

I didn’t know Buddha drank?

Trump. Is there anything he can’t do?

Anyway, all my bitching aside, it is an interesting and rather diverse area. Lots of international cuisine, including Korean, Arabian, Turkish, and Spanish restaurants. But I love this place right across the street from my hotel:

The Filling Station Diner. It’s a throwback bar and grill, with a 1950s Americana motif.

And the food is excellent, albeit a little pricey. Yesterday’s club sandwich was one of the best I’ve had in years….

And this morning’s french toast was also outstanding.

The interior decor was a trip down memory lane…

I’ve seen banana splits, but a ’57 Chevy split? That’s a first!

And I took a moment to harmonize with Elvis before heading out.

And I guess I’ll do some more of the same on my last night in the big city.

Manila bound

This morning I’m off to the city I love to hate, Manila. At least I’ll be in the upscale Makati district, but still. The purpose of the trip is to initiate the long delayed process for obtaining my Special Resident Retiree’s Visa (SSRV). I’ll be visiting the offices of the Philippines Retirement Authority who will helpfully (hopefully) guide and assist me in completing the various requirements. If their website is to be believed anyway. I know I’ll need to get a medical exam and also deposit $10,000 in an approved Philippines bank. There is also a requirement for a police clearance from your home country but since I’ve not lived in the USA for several years that perhaps can be waived. Anyway, I’m staying until Friday which hopefully will give me ample time to complete everything required so I can avoid another trip to the big city.

The drive down ought to be interesting, but I’ll save that story for another post. Meanwhile, here’s a few photos from yesterday’s Hash:

On-On! I like it when we walk out instead of taking the Hashmobile.

As is often the case the trail led through my subdivision. None of my neighbors seemed concerned about this mysterious white powder though…

This being my 26th Hash I’ve walked this trail before–in both directions. I still find it pleasant though.

It was a comparatively easy hike yesterday. Only one mountain and just a couple of places that challenged an old fart like me.

A helpful Hasher helping the lovely ass lass in front of me get through a gully.

And there were other nice views as well…

More to come from Manila! Stay tuned.

Aborted

Sometimes you just hit a dead end. And some days you hit several.

That’s how it was with the walkers group yesterday.

There were 7 of us when we started out. Rode the Hashmobile several clicks out of town to a subdivision featuring this view…

We had a new guy, Tim, along with us. Just recently retired from the VA and moved to Olongapo with his wife. He looks like I did three years ago and his goal is to get back in shape. I admire that but these long ass hikes up and over mountains are probably not the best place to start. I wondered whether he’d make it, but not for long. About halfway up the first incline he bailed.

For the second Saturday in a row our “leader” was having a difficult time finding trail. We kept hitting dead ends and having to retreat. This is especially frustrating after a strenuous climb. Oh, I guess it’s Fiesta season. People tie colorful bags and shit on string and hang it up. Got to admire their spirit.

Speaking of spirit, the Holy Spirit was on display at this Christian school we passed by. I’m not sure where intellectualism and fear of God intersect, but hey, I guess it’s a matter of faith.

So, us walkers continued our hit and miss efforts, eventually ending up in an area I at least recognized. I always appreciate that because I feel more confident when I know I can find my own way home.

These makeshift stairs seemed promising because someone went to a lot of effort to construct them. Nope. Another dead end.

Well, the leaders of the walkers (those German guys again) were bound and determined to find a way over the mountains to get back to Barretto. We were two hours into the hike by now and I was just about at my limit. So I decided to abort the mission and bail. I confirmed my supposition that the road at the bottom of those makeshift stairs pictured above did in fact lead back to the National Highway. I said my farewell and headed back down. Another member of the group decided to come with me.

Interestingly, when we reached the highway we encountered Tim making his way back to Barretto as well. He said he didn’t like being a quitter so he just kept on walking after he left us (the highway is mostly flat and more suited to his current level of conditioning). Good for him! So the three of us made our way over to Cheap Charlies for the cold beer we had worked so hard for and the the remaining four members arrived about 30 minutes later. I had a 25,000 step day, despite the abortion.

It does get a little frustrating sometimes when the trail doesn’t go as smoothly as you might like. Still, the point is to be out and about getting some exercise in. Even when you wind up backtracking you are still accomplishing that purpose.

This morning I tackled the long walk to the Navy base. Thought I’d return along the beach, but I started at a point further out than where we had recently Hashed. And came to an impassable cliff. So, I had to abort my plan and walk back on the highway. Ah well.

Chili in the crockpot and darts on tap for the afternoon. Life is good.

Tipping is not a city in China

On the expat forums there is always some controversy surrounding the ethics of tipping your service providers here. It seems to boil down to a disconnect between folks from a tipping culture (Americans) and those from countries where it is not the norm. The non-tippers get upset because us tippers raise expectations and make them appear to be cheap Charlies. Me, I think they are selfish bastards especially when the folks serving you are lucky to make the equivalent of three or four dollars a day in wages.

Anyway, I recently got involved in a convoluted situation with its genesis in tipping. My friend (let’s call her “Ann”) a waitress from Treasure Island, sent me a message saying she had been suspended from work for two months. I of course asked why and she said it was because she had pocketed a customer tip instead of putting it in the “shared tip” pot. She said everyone does it but she got caught. Well. If the rule is all tips are to be shared amongst the staff then her excuse is unconvincing. On the other hand, if I tip someone for special service provided to me, I want my tip to go to her. Still rules are rules and she should have followed them. A 60 day suspension does seem harsh though.

What got me though was learning that the establishment also keeps a portion of the tips! That is such complete and utter bullshit that I found it hard to believe. So I sent a message to my friend Jerry who until recently was the Treasure Island manager. He was completely unsympathetic to Ann’s situation and said her complaints were just sour grapes. He did confirm that TI keeps 15% of the tips received by staff and uses them to pay for the annual Christmas party. Hmm. Again, I’m a generous tipper normally but I’ll be damned if I want that money going to anyone other than those who have provided the service for which I am tipping. I made a mental note to myself to no longer tip at TI. I also now either inquire of my waitress how tips are handled and more often than not, I surreptitiously slip it into her pocket.

But it gets worse. It turns out that Jerry shared what I thought we discussed in confidence with the owner of Treasure Island. I didn’t mention Ann’s name to Jerry, but of course it wasn’t hard for them to peg her as the one talking out of school. The next day I got a frantic message from Ann wanting to know if I had said anything about what she told me (she had in fact asked me not to share what she had told me with anyone). I had to confess that I had talked to Jerry. Ann told me they were now retaliating against her by refusing to provide a “certificate of employment”, a document she required to prove she had the experience listed on her resume so she could find another job. She begged me to go back to Jerry and ask him to intervene on her behalf. I promised I would.

I was of course pissed at Jerry for sharing our conversation and angry with myself for having betrayed Ann’s trust. I thought long and hard about how to approach Jerry, and finally decided to grovel–“I was only asking from a customers perspective. Ann had not told me anything negative about TI and she should not suffer repercussions based on my indiscretion.” Jerry gave me a bullshit answer “I don’t have a problem”. Yeah asshole, the problem is what you said to the owner.

Ann was beside herself with worry, she has a potential opportunity on a cruise ship and needs the letter of employment. So, I went back to Jerry and told him that if the owner was withholding the employment letter because of something I said that was wrong. I specifically asked him to intercede with the owner. His response–“I understand Ann is trying to “poach” other employees.”

Okay, now I’m really angry and it was clear Jerry was not going to be any help. I’m an old union guy and 30+ year HR professional and I can’t stand to see workers exploited this way. You can’t “poach” an employee who is happy with their work situation. And it was now clear to me that TI treats their employees poorly. So as much as I try to avoid getting sucked into drama, I felt like I had contributed to Ann’s dilemma with my big mouth and it was on me to find a way to fix it.

I don’t know anything about Philippines labor law, but a quick Google search revealed that the “certificate of employment” is something an employer is required to provide. It appears there are some pretty severe sanctions for failing to do so. I told Ann to ask one more time that the certificate be provided and if it was refused I’d pay for a lawyer to file charges against TI. Ann was ecstatic and called me “the best friend ever”. Well, I don’t know about that. If I had kept my mouth shut to begin with…

Anyway, I heard back from Ann that the owner wanted to meet with her. I advised her to be polite, admit she had made a mistake, and thank him for the opportunity he had given her to work at TI. As I told her, it doesn’t have to be true, but sometimes sucking up is the best course of action. Apparently it worked because she came out of the meeting with the employment certificate in hand and best of all it did not contain any derogatory information on the circumstances of her departure from TI.

All’s well that ends well I suppose. Some lessons learned of course, but that’s good too.

Feast your eyes…

…on these photos from my Thanksgiving Day celebration.

So, I had reserved a table at the Arizona Resort in advance. Arrived to find this. Wasn’t sure if they were talking about me or a McDonald’s dessert…

My guests for the meal, Ester, Cherry and Marissa…

The food was all surprisingly good, even by Arizona’s high standards. They had both baked and deep fried turkey and all the side dishes were delicious as well. Yeah, some of my favorite TG standards weren’t there, like candied yams and green bean casserole, but what are you gonna do? My only real complaint was there was no dessert included. I could have gone for some pumpkin and/or pecan pie!

When we finished our meal we headed out to the Arizona floating bar for some liquid refreshments…

Life is good…

…and so were the views. On Wednesday I was up on top of that mountain looking down at the bay and on Thursday I was looking up to where I’d been.

Sometimes life’s a beach…

We enjoyed a few hours on board…

I’m not saying I got a little drunk or anything…

…but I did see the sun go down…

…and the moon come up!

After we left Arizona it was on to our regular karaoke (videoke in local parlance) joint to sing our drunken hearts out. It was a damn fine day. I went home comfortably numb and feeling thankful.

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can’t hear what you’re saying
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown
The dream is gone
I have become comfortably numb.

Giving thanks

Here’s wishing my American readers a very happy Thanksgiving day. Don’t eat too much!

I can’t promise to take my own advice in that regard as I’ll be dining at the Arizona resort’s special turkey buffet this afternoon. Need to get my pesos (595, around $12) worth! Will be dining with some friends from Alley Cats bar because who wants to eat a feast alone?

In the spirit of the day I can say I’m indeed thankful for my family safe at home, my life here, my health, and my loving dog. Life is far from perfect but I know I’ve been blessed.

What else? Well, it’s been a while since I’ve had a day like this:

Three hours with the sausage walkers will do that…

Yogi Berra famously said “I came to a fork in the road and I took it”. What do you do when you encounter a spoon?

We gather every Wednesday at 1000 at the Angels bakery then head for the hills…

And damn, every time I think a climb can’t get any harder, it does.

Unlike the Hash, the trail is not laid out and marked in advance. We are basically just winging it, although the more experienced walkers usually know what’s ahead from past experience. Except when someone constructs a new razor wire fence blocking the trail. We couldn’t go around the fence so we went through it.

About an hour into the hike we came upon what I assume was a rest area. No idea what the real story here is/was.

The effort is rewarded.

It was a cool(er) day, overcast with occasional sprinkles. Quite pleasant really.

This week’s iteration of the sausage walkers…

Happy Thanksgiving y’all!

Rehash Hash

It was deja vu all over again. Although not technically a rehash since Saturday’s hike wasn’t a Hash event. Still, it was exactly the same route I took with the “sauerkraut” walkers. Probably should not be surprised because the Hare was the burly German guy–he just killed the proverbial two birds with one stone I guess. Still just a tad disappointing to not see something new, but other than the exhausting mountain climb it’s a pretty nice trail. Here’s some photos:

A longish trail. It was getting to be pretty dusky by the time I made it back…

The Hare, Almoran, giving last minute instructions…

The walkers being transported to the trail head in the Hashmobile…

That would be me in the back of the truck…

Ready to get started?

And we are “on-on”!

That mountain is a tough motherfucker…

But maybe if you live up there you get used to it…

And there are the views…

That’s me walking the ridge line, a comparatively easy way down…

The old Navy base on the left as we made our way back down to the National Higway…

I just can’t imagine living like this…

My nightmare when I walk the highway. But we made it across safely…

…and onto the beach for a relatively easy walk on-home.

During the Hash circle I was recognized with this headband for completing my 25th Hash…

Ha! And now I’ve completed my 25th post about my Hashing adventures. You’re welcome!

UPDATE: Came across this story about the Hashers causing a panic by marking the trail with “white powder”. HaHa, it’s flour folks. Environmentally friendly!
