So, Facebook has this feature where they take a post you made at some point in your FB history and repost it so you can “see your memories”.  Mine invariably feature a smiling picture of Jee Yeun.  Thanks FB, but I can remember well enough on my own.

And today that story I didn’t tell about the Chinese gal on Friday night took a strange turn. Here’s what happened.  Qian (pronounced “Chen” as far as I can tell) has been known to frequent Shenanigans now and again.  I met her there several months ago.  I guess the general consensus is she’s a little crazy, as in whacked.  She earned that reputation because apparently one night she sat in the bar crying.  For hours and hours.  I wasn’t there that night, but I did observe her crying once and I asked her what was wrong.  She said “nothing, I’m happy”.  Alrighty then.

I’ve chatted with her a bit.  Her spoken English isn’t so good, so there wasn’t a whole lot to talk about.  She was looking for an English tutor so I put her in touch with my nephew.  Supposedly he’ll start working with her next month.  Qian found me on Kakao and one day out of the blue started messaging me all about her problems with a guy she likes.  No idea why people come to me for relationship advice, unless they plan to do the opposite of what I say.  I’m a four time loser after all.

And then on Friday she sent a message asking me if I’d like to meet up in Haebangchon at the “V” club.  Never had been there but she said they have live music and darts.  It sounded like a good change of pace from my usual routine and so I said “sure, why not?”

We were supposed to meet a 9:00 and I got there a few minutes early.  As usual, I was by far the oldest person in the bar.  She sent a message at 9 saying she’d arrive at 9:30.  She wound up getting there at 10:00.  Luckily, a guy I know from work came in and we had a very nice chat which passed the time.

So, I ordered Qian a drink and she left the bar and sat down at a table near the stage.  I said my goodbyes to my friend and went over and joined her.  The live music was really more of an open mike kinda thing.  But both of the performers were quite talented and engaged the audience in banter.  It was pretty enjoyable actually.

Shortly before midnight the guys put their guitars away.  I asked Qian what she wanted to do next and she told me she needed to go home (she lives in Hongdae).  I said okay and went to pay the tab and take a leak.  When I returned I asked her if she was ready and she told me she was going to stay awhile longer.  The implication being pretty clear she meant without me to cramp her style.  I’d noticed her eyeing one of the younger bucks in the joint.  So I said goodnight and left.  Yes, I thought it was pretty rude but then again I had no romantic expectations either.  I decided on my walk home that would be the last time I shared my company with her.  I figured the feeling was probably mutual so I didn’t expect to hear from her again.

And then today during my lunchtime sojourn I get a disconcerting Kakao message:

“John, it is Qian.  Maybe the police will ask you things about me. You just tell the truth and it is ok.”

My reaction was WTF?  So I asked “why would the police ask me about you?”

She responded: “I had some trouble with some guy.  But I’m ok”

I told her she needs to be more careful and she said “And I have to say what I did last Friday.  So I was in the bar with you. And they just wrote your number.  It is not related to you.  Anyway, sorry.”

As I was stewing over what that meant, she sends another message “you were there till you leave later.  They may ask you this.”

Well, that’s true of course.  I was there until I left.  Alone.

I asked her if she could tell me what happened.  She just said “it is ok.  I’m ok.  Sorry, don’t worry”.

So I have no idea what is going on.  Did she get raped?  Did she steal from some guy?  Something else totally off the wall?  Who knows.

I guess I’ll just count myself lucky that I left when I did.  I think this gal is nothing but trouble, and trouble is not what I’m looking for.

Another notch in my belt

Began the LCHF diet wearing a 42" belt. Then I had to replace it with a 40" version. Yesterday I bought a 38" belt for the first time in a long time.

Began the LCHF diet wearing a 42″ belt. Then I had to replace it with a 40″ version. Yesterday I bought a 38″ belt for the first time in a long time.

And a new pair of Levi’s with a 38″ waist as well.

At week 13 I’m 232.1.  That’s a mere 0.6 loss for the week.  Disappointing but not unexpected.  I believe my body has decided that this is the new normal and it is resisting my efforts to be less than the normal.  We’ll see who prevails.

In the mood…

…for a post about my weekend?

Well, it started with no hot water on Friday.  Called my real estate agent and she was basically non-responsive.  Texted my landlord directly on Saturday and he came over.  Then I got a text from the realtor saying my gas had been cut off because I hadn’t paid the bill in three months.  What the fuck?  Every month I take everything from the mailbox and carry it to Woori bank and pay everything via wire transfer.  So, if I hadn’t paid my bill it was because I hadn’t gotten one.  Well, communication is definitely a barrier for me I admit.  My realtor said I should go to an ATM and pay my gas bill. I’m like how the fuck do I do that?  Finally she said she’d pay it and I could put the money in her account on Monday.  She also made a point of mentioning that she was on her day off on Saturday.  Bottom line, she paid the bill (W530,000 for 3 months apparently) and my gas was back on Saturday night.  Which is good, because fat men need to shower!  I put W580,000 in my realtor’s account today (the extra W50,000 for my guilt about her trouble).  But still, if the gas company isn’t mailing me a bill I guess I’ll have the same problem next month. Well, I’ll worry about that later.

Had another bad experience on Friday with a Chinese girl but that’s a story for another time.

On Saturday I did my Namsam hike.

A waterfall on Namsam...

A waterfall on Namsam…

Which was enough to to reach my weekly goal of 100,000+ steps.

Steppin' out

After my hike, I went to Haebangchon for a dart tourney at  Phillies.  Took 3rd, and my share of the winnings was W18,000.  Also had the high out good for W30,000 towards my bar tab.  Which actually totaled exactly W30,000.  So that’s a win!

Later that day I met up with my friends Sonya and Sung Ha for dinner at Tabom Brazil.  Sung Ha is moving to Toronto later this month so it was my farewell treat.  They seemed to enjoy it.

Sunday afternoon was the end of the season tourney for the Seoul Sunday Singles League.  I didn’t place, but I was given this trophy and a bottle of Mongolian vodka for my hard work in keeping the league viable…

Kamsamnida!

Kamsamnida!

It was a great tourney.  One person thought I had played favorites by cheering for a particular player.  Fact of the matter is I don’t care who wins or loses, I just appreciate a well played game.  Rather than say something to me, she called me out on Facebook which hurt my feelings some.  I apologized with a private message, but didn’t receive the dignity of a response.  Oh well.

I tried something new in the crockpot A chicken. Came out dry as sawdust. Gonna need to work on getting it right next time.

Took the day off work today.  I needed to clear my head  It was beautiful outside so I did an 2.5 hour trek around Namasn.

It’s late.  I’m tired.  And drunk.

Goodnight.

UPDATE:  The person I upset at the dart match sent me a message apologizing for the FB post.  I reiterated my sincere sorrow for having made her feel bad during the match.  She’s says we’re good, and that is good.

Everything’s coming up roses…

At least it seemed so on today’s lunchtime stroll.

It was bloomin’ beautiful I tell ya…

I’m going to need walk the long way to the bar tonight to pile on a few more steps.  I target a minimum of 10,000 steps per day during the week and 50,000 on weekends for a clean 100,000 per week.  We’ll see how that works out for me.

Got invited out to Haebangchon to try a new venue (for me) called V bar.  I’m told they have darts and live music, what could go wrong?

Dart tourney tomorrow afternoon in HBC as well.  Dinner with friends in Itaewon Saturday night.  And the long anticipated Seoul Sunday Singles League end of season tourney on, well as the name implies, Sunday.

Not strictly in keeping with the diet, but hey, you only live once…

Speaking of the diet, down 1.6 pounds in week 12 of the LCHF program and 36.5 pounds lost overall.  It’s a struggle now because my body is saying fuck you, I like the way I am.  I’ll keep trying to convince myself otherwise.  At least for another 12 pounds or so.

Oppa Songtan style

Back from my quick overnight getaway to lovely Songtan.  Played the Saturday darts tournament at Xenis Bar.  Came away with a second place finish, good for W40,000.  And my bar tab was only W46,000.

I ran into an old friend from Seoul at the tourney. Used to play darts with him back in the day but hadn't seen him in years. Nice to see you again CH!

I ran into an old friend from Seoul at the tourney. Used to play darts with him back in the day but hadn’t seen him in years. Nice to see you again CH!

It was a long night though.  Because of my position in the bracket I didn’t throw my first dart until 9:30.  And I threw my last dart 3 hours later.  After the tourney I went and visited my new old friends at Friends Bar (I’d met them on my last trip).  It’s a friendly place and it made me feel good to be welcomed by name.

And now I have a confession to make.  I cheated last night.  I was unfaithful.  In my defense I was pretty drunk and my judgement was impaired.  Now, I knew what I was doing was wrong but when I saw her I couldn’t resist.  I walked on by the first time confining myself to a lustful glance.  But then I circled back and said “fuck it, I’m going for it!”.

Yes, it’s true.  I indulged myself in some McDonald’s french fries.  Truthfully, they were not as good as I remembered.  And now I must deal with the guilt (and the carbs I consumed).  Oh well, lesson learned.

I stopped drinking San Miguel Lights just before 2:00 a.m. I was feeling a little stiff so I popped into the Bali Massage joint to get the kinks worked out.  My shoulder was still feeling sore from Friday’s tumble.  The massage was excellent (and completely legit) and I left there feeling both inebriated and very relaxed.

Despite going to bed at 3, I was up at 8 and made my way to the Osan Air Base bus station.  I had the good fortune to arrive just in time to catch the bus departing for Yongsan Garrison.  Back in the villa at 10, started the laundry and pork roast.  I’m so damn domesticated!

What else?  Well, there’s this:

Where does the time go?

Where does the time go?

And finally, today is Mother’s Day and of course I am thinking about mine.  Gone over five years now, but I carry her with me in my heart each day.  Wish I’d been a better son when I had the chance.  If your mom is still with you, go give her a hug.  Right now.

Slip slidin’ away

Slip sliding away, slip sliding away
You know the nearer your destination, the more you slip sliding away

Not much of interest to report, but that’s never stopped me before…

The rain this week failed to dampen my lust for walking (ahem).  Although I do hate carrying an umbrella.  I hate getting soaked even more though.

Yesterday I hoofed it over to the Samsung service center to buy a spare battery for my new phone.  My lack of Korean and their limited English made the transaction more complicated than necessary.  They thought there was something wrong with the battery in my phone.  Through hand gestures and saying “extra battery” repeatedly I eventually made my point and walked away W47,000 poorer.  That included one of those box chargers as well.

Maria mentioned that I never mention her on my blog.  And now I have.

After work I decided to get an extra hour of walk time in by taking a roundabout way to the bar.  It was still misting rain and as I walked down the sidewalk near the Itaewon gu office I was introduced to one of the perils of my new hobby.  It is a nice new and wide sidewalk made with paving stones.  There was a very slight downhill grade.

I was wearing my everyday shoes which purported have a sole suitable for comfortable street walking...

I was wearing my everyday shoes which purportedly have a sole suitable for comfortable street walking…

Nevertheless, one minute I was walking along and the next I was flat on my back on the wet sidewalk.  It was quite surprising and also embarrassing.

I came down hard on my left arm. Hurt like hell and I'm glad I didn't break it. Came away with a bruise and some swelling...

I came down hard on my left arm. Hurt like hell and I’m glad I didn’t break it. Came away with a bruise and some swelling…

At least it wasn’t my dart arm.

I picked myself up and continued walking.  Sorta like getting bucked off a horse I suppose. Made it to Shenanigans and commenced to self-medicate with copious amounts of gin and soda.  A couple of guys I know who work on Yongsan Garrison came in and we engaged in some friendly chatter.  One left around 9:00 and I invited the other to join me at the new Debut, conveniently located nearby.

And then we proceeded to get crazy drunk.  How drunk is that?  Well, my bar tab was W228,000, you can do the math.  Actually, I’m sure I was doing the stupid buying rounds for the house thing.  I think I must have had a good time though.  When I got back home I was floored.  Again.

This morning I was up at 7:00 no worse for the wear.  I rarely seem to get hangovers which is fortunate seeing as how drunkenness is my evening pastime these days.  Had a nice breakfast of bacon and eggs and went surfing (via the internet).

Then it was off to tackle Namsan.  Climbed up some stairs and came back down.  Circled around and went up more stairs, then followed the perimeter road from the cable car terminal to the Hyatt then to my humble abode at Naksapyeong.  Two and half hours, 14,584 steps.  Which seems kind of low.  I’m using a new pedometer app, so maybe it’s right and the old one was wrong. Or vice-versa.

It was a pleasant day to be out and about. The mountain was crowded with other like minded folks, but what are you gonna do?

After I eat, I’ll shower up and walk to the base, and catch the bus to Osan.  Gonna get me some Songtan style darts in tonight and get drunk in a new venue.

The adventure continues.

One thing it didn’t come with was a spare battery.  After checking several stores and getting the same response “you have to go to the Samsung store”, I took it upon myself to go to, well, the Samsung store.  I was told it was near exit #1 of the Sookmyung Women’s University subway station.  In due course I actually found the store, but was told the service department was closed.  Not sure if that is an every Thursday thing or just in celebration of Gracyn day.  I was told they’d be open tomorrow, so I’ll try again.

Seeing as how I was on my lunchtime walk anyway, I meandered on over to Seoul Station.

Soju Honcho left a comment asking about the name of the bridge on my masthead and the photographer.  It’s the Dongjak bridge near Ichon-dong.  Dave New is a hobbyist photographer and quite talented.  Back in his Seoul days he also threw a mean game of darts. You might want to enjoy some of his work on his flickr page.  This album is my favorite, featuring a former waitress from Dolce Vita.

Enjoyed some nice chats about the glory days.  And just like that she has disappeared again.  Not sure if she has blocked me (don’t know why she would) or if she has quit facebook altogether.  Makes me sad though.  Sing it Bruce:

I coulda been in pictures.  Got a call the other night from one of the owners of Shenanigans.  Seems someone was looking for an “older” foreigner to appear in a movie that’s being filmed in June.  Willy showed him my Kakao profile picture and the guy said “he’s the one!”.  Willy gave him my phone number but so far no call.  Rejection sucks, although I guess I’m getting used to it.

All told I racked up 3 hours on and around the mountain.  Came home, grilled up some chicken on a stick, then took a satisfying nap.

A friend called and asked to meet up at Shenanigans.  I hadn’t planned on going out so early, but what the hell.  So I showered up and headed out.  Right before I arrived I got a text message from my friend saying she was drunk and leaving.  Ah well.

I had three San Miguel Light beers and two gin and sodas.  Feeling a little stiff from my walk I headed over to the nearby Thai massage joint.  Had a lovely lass rub oil all over my body.  She asked if I wanted to be rubbed “down there” and I told her “no thanks”.  I was just enjoying being relaxed.  When my hour was up I walked up gay hill, through tranny alley, and down hooker hill to Grand Ole Opry.  At the Opry I enjoyed some country music and three gin and sodas.  Then I made my way to the new Debut and had a couple more. Made it home safely by 11:00 or so and not so inebriated as to be floored.

Up at 7:00 again this morning.  Put a pork roast in the crock pot, boiled some eggs to take to work next week, and chopped up some celery (also for workplace snacking).  Then I did the dishes.

I couldn’t seem to induce a bowel movement this morning, but I did my weekly weigh-in anyway.  The scale said 241.7, a 2.1 pound GAIN from last week.  Discouraged but undaunted, I set about on my quest to the Han river.  My plan was to walk across the Army base and pick up the Han in Ichon-dong.  About the time I reached the Dragon Hill Lodge, my bowels kicked in so I used the facilities in the hotel.  Feeling lighter on my feet afterwards I continued my journey.

Now, when I walk I put on my earphones and listen to my YouTube play list.  Near the high school a car pulls up and the driver says you are not allowed to wear headphones while walking on base for “safety and security” reasons.  I thanked him for the information (I honestly did not know) and he told me it was good that the MPs didn’t see me.  He also revealed that he was in charge of the MPs so I was glad that I had been gracious in my response.

I put my headphones in my pocket until I excited the base at Ichon station.  I wasn’t exactly sure where the river access point was but I found it in due course.  Along the way I passed a church and standing out front was my big boss’ Korean wife.  She was surprised to see me and asked if I was a “visitor”.  I laughed and said no, just passing by. She then asked if everything was okay.  I told her it was, I was just doing my Sunday walk.  I guess exercise must seem out of character for me.

This is the furthest down the river I've been on foot. Although back in my bicycling days I've gone many miles in both directions...

As I approached the Banpo bridge, the fountains went off. Sorry I couldn't manage a better picture.

Two and a half hours on the road.  I downloaded a new pedometer app which I like a lot better.  It said I did 16,486 steps today.  I was dead tired when I got home though. I gave the scale a chance to redeem itself and it obliged by stating my weight at 238.3.  That’s down 1.3 pounds from last week, so I’ll call that progress.  I think I’m approaching the wall—my body is adapting to the new norm of reduced carbs and routine exercise (in the form of walking).  Well, there’s not much else I can do to step it up, but we’ll see.  I need to lose another 20 pounds.

As I get lighter I like to think I’m looking younger.  So, I changed my profile picture on Facebook.

That's me circa 1978. 23 years old and reading Lord of the Rings. Man, there is so much I'd like to tell that guy...Like invest in Microsoft...

Anyway, I’ll wrap up the weekend with my singles league dart match and the requisite aiming fluid that is so essential to high level performance in a game that requires precise hand-eye coordination.  Ha!

Tomorrow morning I’ll get up early and get a blood test done before work.  Tuesday morning I have my follow-up appointment with the cardiologist.  There will be somewhat less of me to examine this go round at least.

Cheers!

I hear some people been talking me down  Bring up my name pass it round.  They don’t mention the happy times, they do their thing, I do mine.

Walk on.

Overextended?

I’m going to be sticking around working and living in Korea for another year anyway.  That should carry us through the move to Pyeongteak sometime next summer.  Then we’ll see what happens.  I’m still in a day-to-day mode for now.

To the extent I do look forward my intentions are to bank some cash so I’ll be prepared for whatever opportunity life might throw my way.  I’m on track to achieve financial independence from creditors by, well, Independence Day.

Things could be worse.
