My favorite soldier

Well, I heard from daughter Hillary. I’d been worried about her after hearing about the mortar attack that killed two soldiers and wounded five yesterday in Afghanistan.

She assured me she was alright, and hadn’t even heard about the casualties. She said things were going well, but she is looking forward to the end of her deployment next month. She said the most danger she had personally experienced was from the poisonous snakes laying about the countryside. After nearly stepping on one last month, she got her first kill. This time she captured one of those terrorist vipers and sent me a photo:

She’s quite the snake charmer, isn’t she?

And coincidentally I also got a package from her today. It is a flag that flew over her compound along with a beautiful certificate that says:

So that all shall know, this flag was flown in the face of the enemy, and bears witness to the American endeavor to eradicate terrorist forces threatening the freedom of the United States of America and the World. This flag was flown on May 13, 2005. OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM

It’s the coolest gift I ever received. I’m getting the flag and certificate framed and will post a picture when its done.

Thanks, SGT. I love you, be safe.

Delusion is bliss?

Surprise, it’s me. I’ve missed y’all, and I appreciate your patience and understanding as I work through some changes. Anyway, notwithstanding the fact that I have not been posting on my blog, I have maintained my morning ritual of reading blogs. And I came across an interesting tidbit today that I thought worthy of sharing.

Here’s the teaser:

We tend to remember slights and frustrations more than favors and kindnesses. So inevitably in a marriage the weight of negative remembrances of things past comes to exceed that of the positive. Divorce is the result.

The secret to a good marriage, therefore is selective forgetfulness. Coincidentally some psychologists have recently come to the same conclusion. The couples who stay together are the delusional ones – the ones who look at their past with rose-colored glasses.

And you can read the rest here.

So, what do YOU think?

Grandpa

UPDATE: It’s official! Gracyn was born at 3:30 pm 6lbs 10 ounces 20 inches long head full of
black hair -both Renee and baby doing fine.

Wow, I feel wonderful!

That’s what I should be about right now.

Daughter Renee went into labor 10 hours ago, so she should be about ready to introduce my granddaughter Gracyn Rose to the world.

Congratulations sweetheart. This whole circle of life thing is a beautiful. Wish I could be there with you, but you know that I am in spirit.

Funny, I was not old enough to be a father all those years ago when Renee was born. I am not old enough to be a grandpa either, but I am oh so ready for this.

WooHoo!

Happy Easter

Well, it may be Monday morning on this side of the dateline, but it is not too late to wish my Christian friends and family a happy Easter. Consider it done.

For those of you who have read the DaVinci Code I thought you might find this post over at Captain’s Quarters quite interesting.

Meanwhile, I’m off to work. More later.

March 11, 1978

Twenty-seven years ago I spent the morning of March 11 in the hospital. But it was a great day. I was there to witness the birth of my son Kevin.

It has been an amazing journey for us over all these years. But when I think of my successes in life, it is my children who bring me the most pride. Kevin is an outstanding young man who has accomplished much more than he gives himself credit for. Where you are in life, and what matters most, is measured by the kind of person you are inside. And Kevin is the kind of person that you can only dream your child will grow up to be. No credit is due me in that regard, Kevin has had to find his own path and I am honored as a parent that he has chosen so well.

Lots of good things are happening for Kevin these days. He just moved into his first house as a homeowner. He will be an uncle in May, and a husband in July. And he will always be my son.

Happy birthday, Kevin! I love you.

The Last Supper

Ok, looks like I will be getting up early tomorrow. We had friends and family over for supper tonight. Lots of wine, food, friends, and family. Carol made all my favorites: pot roast, london broil, corn, mashed potatoes, pasta salad, carrot cake and pineapple upside down cake. Oh yeah, did I mention wine? Dennis brought over some “two buck Chuck”, which was quite good. Guess it proves “the more you pay the more its worth” is not always the rule.

We also played “ImagineIf”, and in my honor (or shame) all the questions were about me.

Anyway, this is all getting reading a little too real. I am realizing how much I am going to miss all that is my life. Well, there is no turning back.

Manana.

PS. I’m getting up early because I still haven’t finished packing. A procrastinator to the end. Plus, they are for calling for snow tomorrow in DC. So, things could go wrong real fast. I do not want to spend hours in the airport WAITING to get on a 14 hour flight.
