Boomtown

@Kevin Kim
Your comment reminds me of the time our company travelled from Korea to China for our annual sales meeting. 100+ Koreans.

Day 1 arrive, Chinese Seafood dinner.
Day 2 Lunch, “Chinese food is not the same as Chinese food in Korea”
Day 2 Dinner, Korean Kimchi Chigae restaurant.

During the course of the dinner, many of the team were requesting extra packets of noodles; they took the noodles out and then used the empty packet to store kimchi in and took the noodles and kimchi back to the hotel. It was noticeable that breakfast was quieter on days 3 & 4 as most of them ate their Korean food haul in their rooms.

The excursion on day 5 included mountain climbing, a trip to some shops and then a foreign food restaurant.

The shops were a knock-off handbag store and golf store. Run by Koreans and even accepting Korean Won.

The foreign food was a North Korean restaurant!

Stung by a B in the ass

Hi John,
Its been a while, although i see you are still the same as ever reading back through some posts.
Regarding your leg / knee issues, have the doctors considered Sciatica?
Some of the symptoms you state match, i have been struggling with back problems over the past 6 months however they first showed up as similar symptoms in my left leg.
After some scans it turned out for me it was a disc issue that was pinching the sciatic nerve and causing the problems.

Take care and keep on rolling!!

Is something brewing?

Hey John,

I’m still reading just not been commenting but today a good reason to do so…what a small world it is, even the poor picture of the band i was 90% sure that the guitarist on the right is my good friend Raymond who played in the bar my wife and I owned here in Shanghai for almost 8 years.
Just to be sure i checked with him and i was correct.
He is a top man who struggled through the Covid shutdown with no gigs and an amazing guitar player regularly winning awards in Shanghai amongst the other filipino bands.
Be sure to have a chat with him when you get the chance, he has some great stories and if i remember correctly kids from every continent except Antartica!!

All the best

Finding our way

Hi John,

Long time no comment, but I have been checking in regularly.
Wanted to add my 2 cents worth on the Pearl / Dick issue.

You mentioned previously that Pearl didn’t like your attempt at a joke when calling her a GRO, now as much as that may not be true she does work at (or own) a bar.
In either case if the bar does well she has a job or a successful business.
Probably more than any other time being able to count on regular business is more important than ever so if she is able to talk to someone and they stay for another hour or 2 this is extra business and good for the bar / Pearl.

Now I am not defending the apparent advances made by Dick in anyway however for your own peace of mind if you take what Pearl is telling you as true then it doesn’t matter what Dick is doing.
If we assume that Pearl is trying to make money through her business (and Dick) then I think you need to take a delicate approach to this situation as although you are viewing things from a relationship angle Pearl is probably viewing this from the business side. You wouldn’t want someone interfering in your business when you were working so she probably wouldn’t want you interfering with her business.
You have mentioned some communication issues already so perhaps a conversation to find out why she puts up with Dick might be in order.

In the future I would hope that the other expats in the area would start to recognise you as a couple and such Dick like situations won’t occur again however at some point when the tourists come back they won’t know you are a couple so will you get jealous each and every time?
An open and honest conversation about how she views her customer interactions and how you view them and how this makes you feel would allow you both to understand the other point of view and hopefully then have an appreciation of the other allowing you to both feel comfortable with the situation.

Anyway all the best with this and everything else.

What’s next?

Quite the surprise to see my picture pop up here!! That was certainly a long time ago and as you rightly said the last time we met up. As normal you provided me with a lesson in darts at no extra cost!

Maybe one day we will get to meet up a again.
all the best.

Seriously?

Hey John, I am sitting here giggling away to myself because I think we now need to add a * to the saying “if life gives you lemons….”

2020 version should now be
If life gives you lemons you make lemonade*
* Unless you’re John Mccrarey in which case you are screwed because you probably lost half the lemons, can’t find a knife and broke your blender.

Stay safe my friend!!

Before the fall

HI John, it has been a long time since I commented but I do check in on your activities on a daily basis when possible. Jessa seems like a good match for you, I don’t want to teach an old dog new tricks but somebody that has a different view on things, or shines a light on your view is not a bad thing. My wife will question many of my thoughts, its annoying at times, but it is not a bad thing and in many cases I believe I come out of this better off.

Don’t worry about the fact that she doesn’t want to do the Hash or hiking with you. I often think it would be great if Wendy played golf but she has no interest in it and in reality its my time away from whatever is going on in our life, good or bad, and that few hours apart is probably good for both of us.

Anyway before I leave I have to make a TV recommendation for you to keep you occupied during your weekend lockdowns. Timeless, it only lasted 2 seasons but a great show. Sci-fi, time travelling….sounds bad so far but they go to true historical moments in time that will leave you searching the internet for more information on the actual facts which are very often correctly depicted in the show.(JFK, the Alamo, Watergate, Bonnie & Clyde etc.)

John, I know on occasion you post updates on your diet / weight but I just want to say that in those pictures you are looking great. half the man you used to be!!

“That’s me with the black backpack by the way…” at first I thought which black backpack does he mean? then I thought no he got this wrong he was taking the picture he isn’t in this.

Great work fella!! recommend some unhealthy food this weekend as a reward or you may waste away to nothing!!

Trail and error

My powers are unlimited, its only taken me a couple of posts to distract from educational material into this downward spiral of immature jokes!!

Kevin, if you want to go full English slang then don’t be surprised if someone asks you if they could “Bum a fag?”

I can heartily recommend Bill Bryson’s book “Mother Tongue”, it provides a great insight into the English language and differences that have developed over time in terms of accents and slang both in the UK and the US.

Thank you sir, I do hope your last comment was about women and full stops?

I understand sone of the spelling differences between UK English and US English (Webster’s?) but there are some words that are totally different such as period and full stop, no idea why, over to you and Kevin.

Comma-tose

Come here for the food pics, darts and drama stories and hash reports (with pics of lady hashers!) and I end up leaving far better educated than when I arrived!

Damn you John & Kevin!!

(Ok maybe only a little more educated, I had never heard of FANBOYS before)

Rinse and repeat

Hot Zone don’t serve food themselves or are they happy to accept people eating outside food based on the money they make on the beer?

I am a wimp

Pies and Pasties, a topic that an Englishman has to comment on or forfeit his passport!

Pot Pie: cooked in a pie tin or dish with only pie crust on the top, most often contains more gravy and can often seem like eating a stew with crust stuck on top.

Pie: The contents are completely enclosed in pie crust, generally drier than the contents of a pot pie due to protecting the integrity of the crust but not always. Classics include the previously mentioned steak & kidney pie which I believe came to be during the post war period where off-cuts where far cheaper to purchase but bulked out the meal. In a similar trend there is also meat & potato pie.

Others to try would be minced beef and onion, cheese and onion (generally this is mashed potato with melted cheese and onion mixed in). Steak & Ale pie, Chicken & Mushroom pie (cream gravy) and even Chicken Curry pie.

Cornish Pasties: I believe these can be traced back to the Cornish Tin miners. The Pasty is in a crescent shape kind of like a Calzone. The curved, crimped edge results in a very thick crust and was used by the miners to hold the pasty bot not eaten due to their dirty hands. In some cases one end of the pasty would be savoury and the other end sweet. In effect a hand held 2 course meal!

Cottage Pie / Shepherds Pie: not really a pie as it is topped with mashed potato rather than a crust. Cottage pie contains minced beef as the main ingredient while Shepherds pie contains minced lamb. Often made to use up left overs from a Sunday roast dinner.

If you every find them in a supermarket I highly recommend Hollands pies!

Walk on by

Hey John, yes I still enjoy dropping by your little space on the interwebs from time to time to see what your up to.

Travelling a lot with work these days but unfortunately not to the Philippines, maybe one day!!

» Posted By Thirsty On 30/July/2019 @ 12:11 pm

John, it’s been a while since I made a comment on here but ffs you are living a dream.

Do what you do and let fate happen. Don’t force it.

You are one of the most honest and genuine people I ever met In Korea. Once you let this shit go, by which I mean finding the perfect women, then it will happen!

Drama King

Hi John, more than enough drama for one week.

Greg sounds like a real piece of work, the reason we play darts is to have a bit of fun competition. If the fun isn’t there I don’t see the point in continuing, we aren’t professional players so we don’t have to put up with it if we choose not to.
It was actually the drama that was going on in the Itaewon pool league and the team I played for that caused me to quit and take up darts instead!

Not too sure why you have decided to quit the Wednesday team if Greg is only in the Friday team? If Greg is the person sucking out the enjoyment don’t play with him but don’t let him stop you from pursuing a pastime you enjoy. But if you have lost all enjoyment for it I fully understand.

FWIW your tactics were spot on and I wouldn’t have had any complaints and would have played it the same way.

Maybe you should take up golf? it would suit your walking addiction and as far as I am aware vey cheap in PI with great courses.

Enjoy the weekend

And the beat goes on

I’m loving the frequent posts mate, its great to see this new chapter in your life.
I sense a greater positivity in your posts and am very happy for you.

A couple of questions
1. What is the standard of darts like in comparison to Korea? (you know I like your darts posts!!)
2. You do realise dogs can jump???

Everybody hurts

Hey John,
My thoughts are with you from China, i wont try to add anything to what Kevin has already said.
I will be sure to get in touch when i am next in Seoul so we can meet up and throw some darts.

Down in the mouth and knee deep in doo doo

I think that a group of people walking side by side at the slowest possible speed is an Asian thing, same thing happens in China. It’s like they are trying to recreate the Reservoir Dogs poster!

Through the years

I for one would be delighted to see the return of the Yoja of the week series.
In the years since you have stopped there must be a whole new batch that we need to be introduced to!!

» Posted By Thirsty On 23/January/2015 @ 2:01 pm

Just say no

Hey John,
Time to put a bylaw in that states the dart league will not get involved in disputes between league members and bar owners, regardless of whether any incident occurs on a league night or not. I think the IPL and SIDL have something along this line. I recall there was a player in the pool league who was barred from a certain esablishment and after tempers had died down a little the owner agreed when his team were due to play at the bar in question (as visitors) he was allowed in the bar but would not be served alcohol. But again this was something discussed between the individuals and did not involve the league.

My trip to Seoul has moved forward to the 16th – 18th September, unfortunatly not soon enough to catch up with you. Have safe trip home and see you next year.
Cheers
Thirsty

Dungeons and Dragons

In my list of “How the hell does that place stay open?” Friends bar was right at the top, and that was before the surge in the number of bars in Itaewon.

An ugly night

Wow, in my 4 years in Korea and 4 or 5 season in the darts league i dont think i ever heard a fight associated with the dart league never mind witnessing one.
In fact one of the main reasons that i stopped playing in the pool league and switched to darts was due to the increasing number of heated arguements that occured during pool matches but simply didnt happen with the darts league.
