Are you hungry, man?

Congrats on surviving a difficult hike! I find walking along angled surfaces, with one foot always higher than the other, a real pain in the ass. Sorry to hear about the slippage, but you seem to have made it without breaking anything, so all’s well that ends well. Better to be among the rolling stones than to become one.

R.I.P.

“Pussy bigot.” Nice. Is that an original McCrareyism, or must we credit someone else? Well, she might still be friend material. You never know.

Full respect for wanting to keep your Hash streak unbroken. Keep on a-taking care of yourself.

“But be careful out there. Things are not always as they appear…”

So the plot twist is that the person in the mosaicked Domino’s ad is actually a guy. (Ladyboys for the win!)

Congrats on beating Jocelyn.

The way Elley keeps robotically inserting the word “sweetie” into her messages is a huge red flag. Her misuse of the preposition “to” (as in “sleep over to you” and “stay to you forever”) also feels very Konglishy. In print, this woman is utterly off-putting—retarded and illiterate.

“But I’ve appreciated that Joy seems to genuinely care about my well-being (or at least does a good job pretending).”

I vote “pretending.” Are we learning yet, or are we still stubbornly letting the dick do our thinking? Rule #1 is absolute. No exceptions.

I’m glad you’re feeling better, although I worry you’ll be wasting your healthy days on whores who are slowly draining you of your cash—all because of a compulsive need for insincere companionship. Doesn’t that get tiresome after a while? Doesn’t that start to feel empty and meaningless? None of these women who are paying attention to you actually like you on any level. All they see is $$$. If they truly liked you in a “friend” sort of way, they’d hang out with you; they’d be around to help you when you needed help; they’d share their deepest, darkest secrets with you; they’d want to see your life become richer and deeper. That’s friendship as opposed to paid companionship.

Sigh… maybe Joy truly is friend material. I suspect that she isn’t, given your track record thus far, but maybe, just maybe, she can be a friend if not a fuck-buddy. We’ll see, I guess… although I’m pretty sure I can predict what you’ll be writing about, regarding Joy, in the coming weeks and months. Prove me wrong.

It makes you wander

Dry cough and fever are the two most prominent symptoms of COVID-19. If your cough is indeed dry, and your symptoms persist, think about getting tested. Worst-case scenario: you’re positive and very likely to survive the infection just fine. Best-case scenario: whatever you’ve got has nothing to do with the pandemic.

» Posted By Kevin Kim On 21/March/2021 @ 12:44 pm

Here’s hoping you won’t need to self-isolate. After the previous COVID scare, it would suck if your fears were realized. That said, take care—for your sake and for others’.

Keep on fighting “the new normal.”

Taking a tumble

All shook up! Glad you made it through your tumble with nothing more than a dirtied shirt.

“Props on his nice artwork[,] though. I understand he is a [video-game] designer in real life.”

I assume you recognize the “buddy Christ” image from the Kevin Smith movie “Dogma.” I read the screenplay before I saw the movie. The screenplay was incredible; the movie was good, but not nearly as good as the screenplay. Kevin Smith isn’t much of a director; like his hero George Lucas, he doesn’t push his actors. Smith is, however, a very talented writer (he’d written the screenplay I read), with a good ear for witty, humorous dialogue.

Good luck on Guenter’s upcoming trail.

A new hobby?

I think commenter “six” is pretty much on the money. This harks back to comments made about “transactional” relationships.

I should note, too, that I made a mistake a while back when I casually agreed with you that marriage could be thought of as transactional. A loving relationship focuses on the giving, not the taking. It also focuses on the encouragement of personal growth in one’s partner, not in the mere enjoyment of the carnal. Marriage, or any truly loving relationship, is deep; prostitution, or any sort of merely carnal/transactional relationship, is superficial. This doesn’t make it evil, but surely you’re deeper than all this.

Are you that desperate for sex?

Over the top

I wish I lived closer to Namsan. I don’t, so I have to make do with the local creekside bike paths and the staircases that line the paths—a series of mini-Namsans instead of one big one.

I’m always interested in the types of terrain you encounter. I’d have to be more of a mountain hiker here in Korea in order to have a similar experience.

I’d walk a mile for a Camel

“Camel toe” will probably be one word someday. When enough people misspell or mispronounce something, then “the law of usage” kicks in, and the improper language is suddenly deemed proper.

#6 was the only one showing any real camel toe at all, so yeah, she was a shoo-in to win.

(“Shoo-in” is another expression that will someday be overtaken by the retarded misspelling “shoe-in.” Same with the erroneous “tow the line,” which is actually supposed to be “toe the line.”)

Things can always be worse

Looks to have been a cloudy but scenic day. Sorry to read that it started out so clumsily.

It seems that only one of the girlies in that photo was showing anything camel-toe-like (and she seemed to have a wee bulge where the camel toe ought to have been!), so… I’m stumped. I’d probably root for the cute chick on the far right—the one doing her tee-hee impression of an East Asian girl.

“I’ll let you speculate on who one for now.”

Spot the error!

Good and bad

Takin’ the bad with the good, I see. The Hash is a metaphor for life. Well, enjoy whatever’s enjoyable and say “phooey” to the rest. Good luck!

The AC is not working

That Korean sign contained a lot of real-estate-related vocab that I had to look up, but it basically says that property-related transactions are to be done directly with the property’s previous (current?) owner, with no brokerage fee. Is that as sad as the famous six-word sad story, “For sale: baby shoes, never worn”? Probably not, but such a sign is still kinda sad. The fact that the sign is in Korean seems to imply a desire that the next owner of the property be Korean.

Good luck with your walks!

All packed up and ready to roll

I think there’s potential for a whole list of John Mac’s Rules for Living in the PI. (I was thinking of translating Rule #1 into French, for the tee design, so as to minimize the potential for confrontations.)

“at the alter of Mother Mary”

Oh, noes! You spelled “eke” right, but what happened to “altar”?

I envy the folks who got to eat your fried chicken. Homemade or ordered in?

The good news is that no one fell into a pit, thank Jeebus.

» Posted By Kevin Kim On 12/March/2021 @ 7:38 pm

Stepping down

I think the point of Rule #1 is that it’s a standing policy, so it really shouldn’t matter how good or bad a judge of character you are. If a woman comes begging, simply say no in all cases, no exceptions. Otherwise, you’re prone to falling into the usual trap. And if it bothers you that the woman might have legitimately needed help, well, it’s assured that she’ll find some white guy with money to help her out. Plenty of bleeding hearts in the PI.

“I guess the only questions now are who will be next[,] and have I wised up? Stay tuned!”

Am kinda wondering about that myself. Are we gonna have to hold you down and brand Rule #1 onto your chest? Tell you what: I’ll request your address soon, and I’ll send you a tee shirt with Rule #1 written on it in huge letters.

The cut-up slab of beef in that photo had an enormous fat cap on it. Did you trim most of the cap off before cooking the beef? If not, you’ll end up with cooked but soaked and nasty-looking fat hanging off the meat. You’re normally supposed to trim most of the fat off (keep it frozen for making broth later on; at room temperature, and even in the fridge, fat easily goes rancid). Too much of a fat layer means whatever seasonings you’ve put into your crock pot won’t have a chance to penetrate the meat deeply.

Otherwise, lovely photos as always. Sorry to hear about the hole-related mishap. At least there were no punji sticks at the bottom of the pit. Y’all be careful out there!

The luck of the draw

How did I miss the “a” in “Gave me A chuckle”? Ha!

Yeah, I’m in no position to joke about creeping senility.

Funny meme at the bottom, there. Gave me chuckle.

Congrats on the darts win, and continued good luck as you continue your radar sweep of local properties. Are all the new houses, the ones currently under construction, already spoken for? I assume you want something sturdy, fairly modern, and high up so as to avoid flooding issues. And I also assume you’re through with living in apartments. I know I am. Whatever my next property will be, it’s going to be a free-standing home where I can make all the damn noise I want to. In my basement, at least. (Oh, yeah: for me, there’s gotta be a basement. For the sex dungeon, you see.)

After Hash

Oh, yeah—congrats on the winning chili con carne. It looks competition-worthy to me.

$300 is for a week of shopping, or for a month of shopping? I’d say that that’s close to a reasonable monthly total.

The chickadee sitting on the ice with you (and decidedly not social-distancing) is a cutie. Have you mentioned her before? I’m senile about names and faces that I see on blogs, especially if they’re only occasionally recurring characters. I have a feeling I should already know this person.

What a mess, trying to make that hotel reservation, eh? What’s it like to live life in a fog? I shouldn’t joke: in another decade, I’ll be doing my own Bidening. (I’m arguably doing it already. See above.)

Sorry to read that you might be moving, but it is what it is. Alas, there’s no chance of settling permanently anywhere: rental prices always tend to go up, so you’re doomed to be moving every few years, I think, unless you have some trick up your sleeve.

Hare of the dog

Boy, that Carol never learns, does she. I still can’t fathom what you saw in her.

Anyway, good luck to the Hashers who walk your trail! May they find it enjoyable.

Not good

Nice darting shirts! And that’s a good-looking sandwich.

I’m surprised John Kim didn’t go for making filet mignon steaks—that’s the classic thing to do with a tenderloin. The problem with using it any other way (e.g., in sandwiches) is that the meat has almost no fat in it, which means it’s actually not all that flavorful (marbled meat, with its intramuscular fat, is the best, which is why people worship Kobe and Wagyu, or the Korean equivalent, Hanu). You have to jazz it up with salt, pepper, and maybe other seasonings like garlic powder to make it lively.

How about using your Jedi-level walking skills to patrol the neighborhood, snap photos of properties under construction, and then start your own website, which can act as a hub for prospective renters? If you were to set up on SquareSpace, it’d be easy.

As for what this foodie is doing: I made a nice batch of “quick” chili; I’ve already made nachos with it, and now, I’m going to use the rest for chili dogs. I need to make some cheese sauce, but that shouldn’t be a problem. I also have to either find some hot-dog buns somewhere, or bake them myself.

Lucky thirteen

Max is lucky that all he did was puke. He didn’t have any water-purifying tablets or a nanofilter like my Grayl? Yikes. For short hikes, I’ve discovered the easiest solution is just to carry enough bottled water for the trip.

Anyway, it looks to have been a good hike, even if it involved a lot of trail-blazing. Why didn’t you guys follow the kids’ advice and head to that “pool” more directly?

Climb it change

“we kept on scratching and clawing and eeking out wins”

I think you mean “eking,” from “to eke (out).” Use “eek!” when you see a mouse in your kitchen; use “eke” when you barely scrape by.

“It was a steep and painful climb that I doubt any of us will want to repeat anytime soon…”

Funny… my buddy Jang-woong had been pestering me week after week to do some long walks, so we did a few 25K-and-under walks, and then we did that that big 30K walk from Yangpyeong to Yeoju… and ever since then, JW has been completely silent. I’m curious to know how much that walk wore him out and/or caused new and delightful aches and pains to appear in his feet. It’s interesting how 25K feels more like a long stroll, while 30K feels like a true slog. JW’s pride probably won’t let him admit how much pain he was in by the end of that last walk, but I’m guessing, from the lack of text messages, that he’s not eager to go out and do another walk of that scale anytime soon. Too bad—I’ve got some 35K-ers planned, including a walk up to the Andong Dam.

Congrats on your dart victories, and (belated) good luck with your next dart contest.

Why do they call it mens?

Oh, yeah: as for “mens,” you probably know the answer: it’s from the Latin mensis (plural menses), meaning “month” or “monthly.”

Plenty of Filipinos spoke Spanish back in the day. If a Yank is now teaching a Filipina proper Spanish pronunciation, that’s an indicator of how much the times have changed.
