Ruby Tuesday

As far as I know, she has no family. The story I’m told is that many years ago she worked in a long-gone girly bar called Kinky’s. She’s kind of an icon around town, referred to as the “umbrella lady”. No, there are no shelters or soup kitchens around here but individuals will sometimes organize food handout days. I know of a couple of others who give mama money on a regular basis too.

I had considered looking for a cheap accommodation for mama but I honestly don’t think she would stay there. It appears she enjoys her life on the street. She has some regular spots where she rests and sleeps, she told me she bathes in the bay, and I see her walking all over. She has nothing but she always has a smile. That’s more than some rich people can claim.

It’s a voluntary thing. Most Hashers never Hare. Me, Scott, and Jim do so every 5 or 6 weeks, so that must be the number of people who Hare regularly.

I look at our “easy” trails as a counterbalance to the insanity of Hares like Guenter.

My intention is to put the unpleasantness behind me and carry on as always. So yes, I’ll be out there chucking my darts on a regular basis in search of the holy grail of consistency. Winning the league might be a stretch but it is a worthy goal for sure.

Seek and ye shall find

Thanks, guys. I’m keeping an open mind about the meeting today. A Filipina friend advises that it’s all a misunderstanding, that in expressing their views in English it came across as an unintended personal attack. Maybe so, and perhaps I overreacted as well. We’ll see.

Billy, I can do more distance on flat ground for sure. The climbs tend to kick my ass. Most Hash trails come in the 6-8K range. During the week, I’ll do six hikes–with groups on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and by myself Thursday, Saturday, Sunday. Tuesday I shop and do other chores. Actually, hiking makes the beer taste better! So win-win.

The two other nearest Hashes are in La Union and Angeles City. AC comes up for an “outstation” run once or twice a year. There are lots of options for trails in this area, and we occasionally drive out of town some for additional variety. Some we do often enough that we have given them names: “My Bitch”, “Motherfucker”, “Stairway to Heaven”, etc. The Hash marks don’t last too long–a good rain will erase the chalk and powder markers. The shredded paper stays around for a while, so we use it infrequently. I guess it’s technically littering, but then again, that seems to be acceptable in this culture.

Yes, I have noticed that Filipinos can be every bit as cruel and heartless as any Korean. They even have a name for it hear: crab mentality. Basically, you are subject to being abused if you achieve some measure of success that invokes the jealousy and envy of your neighbors.

As for Jicel, it is pronounced like Giselle. And I have no illusions that she is or ever will be anything other than a drinking companion to me and I nothing but a customer to her. That’s for the best. The fact that she was so concerned about me posting her picture on Facebook tells me that she likely has a boyfriend/sponsor and doesn’t want me messing up her gravy train.

This rice was directly on the road. I’ve seen them use tarps in other spots though. Seems like it would be a major pain in the ass to get it off the ground like that. Not to mention, unsanitary.

A lazy Tuesday

I lived west of the Mississippi (Oklahoma/Arkansas) at the time. Oddly enough, until my first promotion, I was also active in the letter carrier’s union as a shop steward and former local president. Guess I didn’t get the memo on Coors.

One day I was drinking a Coors Light and some guy said “that beer is like making love in a canoe.” I asked why and he said, “because they are both fucking close to water”. Bada bing!

I was probably inclined to Coors Light back in those days. And that reminds me of a story. My dad, also a big beer drinker, was a union guy. I brought a 6 pack of Coors (a non-union company) to the house one time and he told me to get “that scab beer outta here!”

Yeah, we teased Scott about shitting his pants. That’s what it looked like!

I think what I like about Relive is the nice Google Earth map and how it draws the trail you hiked in an as you go fashion showing the photo stops along the way. Since the photos aren’t viewed full size I’ll continue to post the best ones separately. Might make for some occasional repetition, but so be it.

I agree there is a special kind of beauty in the interaction between nature and the people scratching out a living from the land. Honestly, I am always impressed with the folks who make the best of what they have. It’s a hard life I’m sure but the ones I meet are invariably helpful and friendly. That paradox of poverty and happiness is the most impressive thing I’ve found about the people in this country.

Beers and darts

Well, I’m consistently inconsistent at least. A second and a third-place finish in the last two tourneys against strong competition. So, I’m just trying to ride the rollercoaster and not let the downs affect my overall game. Just got to keep firing until you get back on track.
