Let’s go!

congratulations

I am happy to see that we were all wrong.

you have made it work with this woman you’ve nicknames Swan. You finally found someone who joins you in your hikes, and supports even your frequent bar visits. And it appears that she still continues her own hobbies and socializing with her own friends as well.

You finally did it.
You’re having your cake πŸŽ‚ and eating it. I presume that’s what ‘shameless’ is referring to πŸ˜‰

Made it back home again

From time to time I think you’re close to connecting the dots.

While lamenting the fact that you don’t have anyone to share your bed and your hobbies, and that you’ve gotten used to sleeping alone and waking up alone.

A few paragraphs down and there’s a woman who’s neither your wife nor girlfriend just rubbing your back. She’s not a massage therapist and this was not a paid session with any significant medical benefits for your back pain.

You have made peace with living in the gray zone…not really acting like a committed boyfriend, but not acting like a single guy on the prowl either. It’s a large area that most people lean on one side or the other, but you manage to criss-cross its entire breadth in a single day. That takes practice and dedication πŸ‘ And at this stage I think it’s so intertwined with your daily life and weekly habits that there’s no incentive to change.

And to connect the dots as to why seeing the happy couples on the hash made you wonder why it couldn’t be you ; the simple answer is you don’t want to and you certainly aren’t prepared for that.

It’s normal to wish for a better life, to covet what others have. But the way your life is structured, your thoughts habits hobbies interests philosophy…. this is the optimal outcome. I think you’d agree that there is not much worse than doing whatever you want at any time, and spending your time drinking beer by the sea.

Live on and prosper

One’s for the money…

Enjoy your getaway with Swan, cheers!

Lemon tree

And I do enjoy buying these smiles.

poetic

I have refrained from commenting on your blog in recent weeks because it’s starting to feel ….less hopeful. You’re one of the few people who stay active in retirement, …active and busy and lively and healthy and fun .
Recent events may have caused your optimistic nature to take a hit , but just know that your readers also send their hopes for you to use when you’re out of stock.
Life’s not done yet
And don’t worry, I won’t suggest another trip to reset and rejuvenate….because you’re set in your ways in your town and even on vacation you stick to routine.
Enjoy the daily adventures

The lies have it

Not gonna pile on to all this.

You know the truth about yourself.

but you can’t just straight up admit that all those potential girlfriends are right.
otherwise you’d be no different from any alcoholic womanizing whore mongering bloated dotard using your inborn luck and wealth to take advantage of the impoverished ladies in a third world shithole.

We can’t think of this situation in that way, otherwise you’d spend your days depressed.

unlike the others, I think that you should embrace and even flaunt this behavior. People will criticize you anyway

Strollin’ on a river

Does this place have biking paths too?
it looks so modern and clean

definitely cleaner than Manila or even Bangkok.

I’m sure you have visited many cities in Asia so you’ll be in a good position to make a comparison.

The main reason you chose the Philippines πŸ‡΅πŸ‡ was the ease of communication with English as the lingua franca .
Other than the big city slum that is Manila, is there another city that offers the same vibe that you have in your city now? I have heard Cebu or Davao offer some amenities suitable for a man of your proclivities.
but your mountain mansion looks regal by any standards

thanks for the writing
we all are thankful that you keep writing even during your vacation. Well, I guess you’re always on vacation but still you keep longer hours than most workers I know.

Have you met anybody to fall in love with ?
how do they compare to your usual eye candy in your neighborhood?

A birthday celebration

I thought the snackbar wasn’t in business anymore. is that the place where your ex works πŸ’ͺ?
I do admire your healthy friendships even with exes. It speaks of your maturity and emotional stability. My ex stabbed me with a spork , that wasn’t what you’d call an amicable dissolution . I guess I’m lucky it wasn’t the kitchen knife.

It looks like the birthday party was held at a busy roadside diner. Except I imagine there’d be much more motorcycle noise and smog , and combine that with the sweltering heat and that makes me shake my head that jeans are the fashion choice. Maybe it’s my Scandinavian tendrils speaking, but didn’t the good lawd deem it necessarily for seasons to change? Otherwise how do you even tell the passage of time? A time to reap and a time to sow. A time to frolic with your lover in the flowers, and a time to lick your wounds in the snowy heartbreak. A time to take peel off the layers and get some vitamin D, and a time to bundle up against the trade winds. A time to witness the birth of the youngsters, and a time to bid adieu to old friends.
A change in seasons makes for a wonderful rhythm of life. That familiar chill in the air that brings anticipation.

But then I guess you’re used to it now. The dry heat, and then the wet rainy heat. And the third season of Xmas and special days.
Gotta give it to you Mccrarey.. You’re a versatile, adaptable fellow.
Did you ever imagine that this is what you’d be doing when you were a youngster? Did you dream of traipsing the world?
I guess your most formative significant experience, except for getting married young, was the work ethic you developed as a mail carrier. The reward of doing a hard day’s work, work that doesn’t end til the mail has been delivered to the right houses , the tussle with the stray cats and baying hounds …That’s a kind of crucial character-building that comes with the turf.

Your biography will certainly cover the walking part. You walked in your youth because it was a job, now you walk for pleasure and health, and yet you bring the same determination as if you have mail to deliver and a paycheck to earn. Do you know anybody who walks as much as you do? I should say, somebody who walks as regularly as you do? I’m sure you’ve mentioned the steps , and all the trails. But what impresses me is the regularity , the way you keep doing it again and again and again. I would say ‘season after season’ but you know how I feel about tropical weather. Is it tropical or subtropical? I’m sure my Geography teacher mentioned that , but I was thinking about lunch.

Thanks for the writing as usual.
The regularity of your writing deserves its own award ceremony, but that might become too circular of a dialog.

Don’t forget with Xmas coming up; that you promised your friend Kevin a bar crawl with themes and fireworks. Or just a stumble from bar to bar. Though I think you’d need a wingman for this kind of activity, somebody to watch your back and also keep you company. A wingman to stay objective, and actually to watch your antics and then relay the information on how you enjoyed each bar.
Perhaps one of your former lady friends will help..As long as she’ll promise not to bring a spork

What else is new?

this Julie is the best
the perfect woman for you
except she’s as fiercely independent as you are and she’d never subsume her dreams and aspirations into yours

I’d say she deserves all the help she can get ,if she’ll even accept it . If you were able to support Marie’s business ventures , you certainly can invest in this Julie ,who seems more capable of putting in the hard work to make a success out of any project.
But you’d have to insist it be a loan, and even set some payment schedule or else she may not accept such a charitable act .
Look at me, championing the cause of a woman I’ve never even met.
that’s what happens to rabid fans of celebrities πŸ™„

What is your nation?

As regular readers are aware, Joy is your regular. Or you’re her regular. Either way ,she gives you joy.
And she’s not even your first Joy.

Unlike most of your regulars, with whom your interactions are very direct and almost transactional, you actually adhere to the rituals of sharing dinner and drinks twice a week. That’s more often than some married couples spend together. Some may even call it dating… or a relationship. Yeah, I know you’ll cover your ears and refuse to hear that.

Anyway, would you tell the story of how you came to be associated with this Joy? As I remember there was some trouble with her old place of employment that wound up with the law getting involved. You subsequently transferred your allegiance to Joy ; an alliance which has stood the test of time.

In celebration of what we will call an anniversary ,why don’t you regale your readers of what sparked this particular association, and what keeps it going where others have succumbed to the ravages of time. Obviously, it’s something that is so intertwined into your life that you don’t consciously think about it , but some of your newer readers do need the tales

There is valor in discretion

2 exes in one town is quite a feat
never mind 2 exes in the same hash group in the same picture πŸ“Έ

do they both know about each other?

Either you’re a prolific lover or your town is small

I’m gonna to with ” handsome lothario’

good for y’all to keep up with your exercise regimen

I see some taut flat stomachs on the womenfolk and rounded igloos of mushy bellies on the gentlemen
They say opposites attract .

also
do the bars bid to be the host venue for each of your hash gathering or do they consider it a rare inconvenience?
They’d have to balance their regular customers, with the extra waitstaff needed to serve your needs. But I guess the bigger profit margins would win out the day on that decision.

Did I read somewhere that you’re one of the leaders? back when you had a bigger house you could always invite everyone to cool off , and impress the ladies with your big yard too.
what happened to your bid for power?
and last question
will you ever pick up the darts again? Some of your finest hours were in darts, and while that did not help you when you wanted to lose the beer belly, you had some mental health goals there to keep your mind sharp.
Could your recent forgetfulness be attributed to your watching more Television and throwing fewer darts? What do you do to maintain a modicum of mental acuity? As you get older, you may want to consider that.
your body is in great shape ( though I use that word liberally), because you walk thousands of kilometers a year. What of your mind? Writing here sure does take some time for you, but there’s been a lack of mentally-challenging tasks in recent months J. Do you read? play board games, card games , online games? There’s gotta be more your brain activities other than remembering where you last saw your keys and your phones.

Emotionally, no notes there. You have had all sorts of Emotionally challenging events , enough to last a lifetime. Physically, you carry your beer belly all over town and that’s adequate exercise I would think. Though I should mention that swimming offers more total body exercise πŸ€” I am surprised that in all your years on Barretto you’ve not considered taking scuba or diving lessons. I heard there may he wrecks down there full of mermaids and gold.

Bars of Barretto: Chill

Thanks for all the writing as usual πŸ˜€
There are more and newer bars every other month.
We all defer to your superior knowledge when it comes to the rankings. After all, you’ve sampled all the wares on our behalf . Not all heroes wear capes.
For the life of me, I can never figure out the bars locations in terms on a map. What is even the center of Barretto where somebody could pinpoint as a starting point of a bar crawl? I’m sure you’ve done your own bar crawl before, but you do seem to enjoy the walking as much as the drinking 🍸
What would you recommend as a best of Barretto bar crawling experience for a pot-bellied fella who does not intend to get many steps on that pedometer? πŸ€” a mixture of naughty and nice places, loud and conversation-friendly, full of parlor games or drinking games, indoors and outdoorsy areas, hard liquor and light beers 🍻
A wild trip through all of these over the best of the best.
Somewhere in there , there’s gotta be food. That would be a great night

I was shocked to hear of your recent health scare. We all thought you’d beaten all that lung affliction. You even gave up the smoking and or the vaping with the cool kids. Good news you have your doctors right in the neighborhood.

Keep healthy , wealthy and happy

Also, my obligatory support of your relationship with Joy 😊
Whatever you may call it, I am glad to see you give and get joy in this arrangement.
That was not a pun

I’m a crazy SOB

The woman on the mountain is looking skinnier and skinnier. Does she have a husband or male cousin up there? I can’t imagine it’s that safe if it’s just her and her children.

Also, the rumors seem to be true.
Most mongers, if you’ll excuse the term, swear that Barretto is full of ugly old wrinkly bargirls. ‘ girls’ is doing a lot of heavy lifting.
The photos you’ve posted here and in other blog entries either have extremely young ladies or rather frumpy single moms working very hard.
But today you straight up posted grandmothers πŸ‘΅ I was under the impression that the rampant inherent ageism in girly bars would curb the age at 30. I guess this is a good thing as it provides employment opportunities. And for you to have a somewhat mature companion to share laughs with.

You were so busy you forgot to mention and highlight the winners of the prizes .
Aine wins πŸ† by default

Thanks for the writing as usual.

At my Hideout

Great to hear that.
At least at this bar you’re appreciated. That smile alone means a lot.
I’m sure the others also get their favorite customers to entertain them at later hours .

Are there other bars on the side of town where Hideaway is ? It still fascinates me that one bar could be located so far away from the main strip , and be so well-hidden that only the true seekers can find it. And yet it’s doing brisk business.

Is the place near another of those subdivisions, or at least a residential area to get some customers coming in to make this their local watering hole at least.

Glad to see that you’re now fully back to enjoying your life after all the setbacks you had over the last month.

Keep on keeping on

» Posted By James On 16/August/2022 @ 8:02 pm

Joy is quite a stunner. She seems to get all your attention.
Are the other Hideaway ladies usually occupied with their clients or do they usually stare as you and Joy have a good time

» Posted By James On 15/August/2022 @ 10:29 pm

UnSOBer

Well well well
It’s unusual to see you lose control. A rare moment indeed.

And you’re right. You should be just drunk enough to have a great night out, but sober enough to remember the good times.

Perhaps your mistake was calling down the SOB dancer to drink with. In the company of such beauty, I too would drink to excess. Aren’t the SOB dancers the most beautiful and most talented girls in each bar? Or at least the representatives for each place. Speaking of which, how come your favorite bar friend Joy and the Hideaway crew don’t join the weekly dance competition πŸ€” I’m sure they’d win πŸ˜‰ given that they have a judge in their ….erm pocket.

I guess your high stature as a generous funny 😁 chatty guy means that even the top SOB girls feel excited to share your table at these events.

And Speaking of top girls , I see the tall girl is back doing the hash walk with you. I don’t know how much it helps in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, but walking in the hot humidity of the tropics is gotta be its own form of punishment. The fact that you do it every day is testament to your commitment. Your friend who roams around with an umbrella and gloves has the right idea πŸ’‘
I still don’t know how you could have adjusted to living in a place with distinct seasons to where the seasons are distinguished by the amount of moisture. I guess for you it doesn’t matter because you’ll be out on your walks sweating like a boar.

How is the current occupant of your old house doing ? I’m sure you walk by and remember the good times, and giggle as you know that the new tenant will never find the secret treasure maps you hid under the floorboards πŸ˜‰

The cost of freedom

Thanks πŸ‘ 😊

While the rest of the bar patrons were getting drunk, you were doing the good work interviewing an interesting individual πŸ‘ πŸ‘
You’re so good with words , you could change the world 🌎

It looks like your hiking group is growing in numbers. I see some younger men of a western hue.
And that picture of Ron and his girlfriend….I’m sure some readers will come up with an apt caption πŸ˜€

Thanks again

Hopefully you don’t scare off the beautiful Tanya with your declarations of love yet, but the bar looks like it could benefit from your regular patronage. Let’s assume the beer 🍺 is affordable, and the music 🎢 is acceptable for you.

And I believe congratulations are in order. First for getting the vaccine despite your misgivings.
And secondly, one of your exes is doing rather well in business: 2 businesses booming in such a saturated market and yet she’s making a killing.
The other ex gave in a bit too much, and I suspect you’ll be on the hook for her living expenses. Last time I excoriated you on your soft deer-like generosity….but you are what you are. And nobody’s getting hurt. You’re doing the Lord’s work, helping your fellow man because you can and you want to.

How come Dave the resident businessman rarely join your hash hikes or drinking 🍸
Also, the loss of your friends at the dart club is something I hope is temporary. As you know ,I’m a big advocate for you having some male friends to share conversation and good laughs. It would be a shame to give up on such a good home bar just because the vibe was off a few times.

Thanks for writing as usual

Tuesday’s gone

How is your new drinking regime treating you? I imagine that you still struggle to pace yourself so that you give yourself enough time to get to a level of tipsy while you’re just reaching the end tail of your barhopping excursions, and still factor in the impromptu invitation by some of your favorite bar staff to come and grant their wishes to make enough money for the day.

On the other hand, after drinking all morning πŸŒ„ (long story, don’t ask) I found myself wishing that there was another way. The 2 day hangover that followed this binge drinking on an empty stomach was rather expensive and wasteful.
On my next barhopping I decided just to stick with orange juice to see what would happen. I still had a great time, and I felt well enough to still be able to function the next few days. However, the only drawback of having a sober night out is that you tend to remember most of the details . I’m talking about the faux pas ,the pointless conversations and the social missteps.
I imagine that could be the only drawback for you, seeing as you’re not an extrovert.
But when you get tipsy, some things get a little hazy and the liquid courage can lead you to do some adventurous things. Good thing is you don’t particularly drink enough for a hangover, so you won’t lose a morning of activity πŸ˜‰
I would recommend that you try that some time, not for the savings or your health, but as an experiment to see if you’ll notice the difference in reactions around you

And speaking of things around you
What’s the latest with your friends?
We haven’t seen Troy’s glorious goatee or Martin’s hiking shoes in a while. I guess that’s because you’ve been inactive .
And how’s the gentleman who had the traffic accident? I hope he’s recovering well

Where eagles dare

As they say in Stoke , it’s a difference without distinction.
A wanker is more deliberate in his misconduct, and obtains a perverse sense of pleasure from rubbing people the wrong way.

A bellend is more socially inept and usually behaves in a boorish manner to increase his sense of self-worth , except that he believes that such self-esteem is a zero sum game so he won’t abide anyone else in his orbit who may display any semblance of confidence.

The Thumbstar hero is probably a good combination of both, but more of the second part. But I’m sure his friends, associates and acquaintances are adamant that he has some redeeming qualities…which strangers like you and I are too blind to see πŸ‘€

In any case, your town is populated by people who have had a lot of varied life experiences, which in a way entitles them to semblance of a sense of confidence and many may expect something akin to respect πŸ™
And the fact that virtually everyone of your demographic is in the upper echelons of wealth in that town, it is understandable that people may expect a kind of treatment that befits their stature.

Which brings me to my constant refrain: you interacting with such individuals, like-minded and on a similar socioeconomic level is something I would like you to do more of. But of course life doesn’t work that way : we don’t make friends based on tax brackets or even national allegiance. And of course, part of your living in the country is so that you become immersed in the local culture ; and Kevin will be the first to encourage you to learn Tagalog at least for a few weeks . And then we all remember that you’re retired and you should do just as you please πŸ™ You got the best of both worlds: living in a cheaper country without having to give up the comforts of your homeland , and still not experiencing too much discomfort due to culture shock.

Last but not least: you actually have a quest, a mission to find a companion to share your largesse with; and that struggle keeps you nimble and agile enough , and motivated enough to write ,think and talk about it. And that is a major reason why your readers keep coming back ; we’re really rooting for you

» Posted By James On 12/August/2022 @ 7:18 pm

Thanks for the reply.
Yes , I encourage you to explore things with this exotic lady . This life of yours could benefit from introducing a new character ✨️
I am not sure about this Blue Butterfly, without re-reading your bar reviews I’d hazard a guess and say it’s not one of the highly-rated, or maybe is the one with all the live music. πŸ€” Either way, it won’t hurt to get another regular hangout spot into your rotation ; especially after the cold shoulder from patrons at your dart bar .

We can all count on you to have a favorite lady at each bar you visit, and to eventually pluck up the courage to make an attempt at a relationship of sorts πŸ˜‰
It may be a feeble gesture or romance, but you can do it

As for the bellend, I was thinking of the Thumbstar manager. We all agree that he’s a bit of a wanker.
More British slang for you.
Do not attempt to use any of these words

» Posted By James On 11/August/2022 @ 1:34 pm

I’m not saying it’s COVID

Get well soon.
We all know your feelings about the covid situation.
Hopefully, you don’t experience the full effects.
In the event that you feel better, allow me some vitriolic abuse aimed towards your recent behavior.
Much of it is what you’ll be thinking or feeling, but a stranger on the internet has the appropriate words to convey.

‘ a sister of a friend’s girlfriend ‘ is already quite convoluted. That the person was instructed to contact you to buy a birthday cake πŸŽ‚ for such a stretch of an acquaintance confirms my suspicions.
You’re the mark, the sap , the simp, the bank that grants loans never to be repaid, the schmuck, the village idiot, the walking ATM. As soon as I read the first line of your paragraph I knew you’d get no word of thanks . She just whistled and expected you to come , with the cake πŸŽ‚ no thanks necessary πŸ˜’ That she even deemed it important to talk to you when you delivered the cake πŸ˜‰ is in itself amazing . People don’t usually show gratitude for an obvious expected act.

But you’re a happy sap…a relatively rich sap. In fact , you willingly partake in this hoodwinking simp behavior… I guess I should congratulate you for staying consistent. Your friends , foreign and local, are now comfortable enough to refer strangers to you to get financial help. The bell πŸ”” has been rung ; you’re the schmuck people can come to for easy money πŸ’° πŸ€‘
The fact that you’ve been having such a lousy experience in bars with people whose job it is to pretend to be polite to you because you literally pay for their company πŸ˜’ πŸ™„ That is a different level of sadness πŸ˜”

Now you’re gonna plan an elaborate way to avenge this slight ….by not visiting the said bar for a few months, and not responding to the pleas of the lady, but you’ll definitely be charitable to her cousin’s boyfriend’s sister πŸ˜‰
You’ll angrily walk past the bar for the next few weeks, and the withholding of your money from the establishment will give you solace . Then all will be forgotten and you’ll visit again, with the same results.

I would like to end this diatribe with a positive message ☺️

At least you have your health
And you have your money πŸ’°

So that’s good πŸ‘
As long as you’re happy 😊 πŸ˜ƒ
We all have roles in this society

» Posted By James On 27/July/2022 @ 6:52 pm

Give a little bit

Thanks πŸ‘ 😊 I’ll have to read up on that.
But I was jumping off from your mistreatment at the hands of the bargirls at several of your favorite drinking holes , and how you responded by purposefully ignoring the offending parties on your subsequent visits.
I guess it’s not so much vengeance as much as it is the customer’s right. Of course, your generosity in the bars is already quite high πŸ™„ so any reduction in your expenditure is quite noticeable.
Nevertheless, your battles with these kinds of things really fascinates me.

As to the recent encounters with your former lover and the Dick , do you think there’s a mental health issue at play ? I mean, there’s a level of obsession and idiocy that permeates the entire persona of this individual. Or maybe it’s just the obvious rampant alcoholism combined with the adled brain. Somebody needs some hobbies , and maybe a friend or 2 , or to adopt a stray cat .
Come to think of it, I am now starting to think you with your lonesome habits and lifestyle are the most sane person in your town.
Other than Dave the businessman, not many of the expats that you write about seem to have planted genuine deep roots in the place you all call home. Even he is involved mainly on the business side of things, and spends his time traveling to other locales for many reasons. I guess that’s the real meaning of semi-retired life : the ability to freely relocate coupled with the rather shallow connections to any one place.

As your readers, we all look forward to a time when you start traveling to other places . The stories you tell from there will be just as exciting, but with new characters.
