Agree with the above comments. The house in the other neighborhood looks like it not meet what you need. Money (within reason) does not seem to be an issue, so moving to the other place because it is half your current rent doesn’t make sense.
Remove money from the equation and evaluate places simply on the neighborhood/neighbors, aesthetics, view, location, etc.

Kevin, interesting comments. Actually, a pretty good way of thinking about it.
Heard a talk (might have been a TED talk) from a guy who had contemplated suicide. I can’t remember the exact quote but it was something like, “do you really want to die, or do you just want to change the way you are living.” Basically, suicide is a permanent solution to an oftentimes temporary problem.

Sorry to hear about your friend. Hope he is on the mend soon. No fun being sick, regardless of where you are at. Though, made all the worse in a third world type of situation.
I kind of agree to disagree with you and Kevin on how to handle COVID, but you both make some good arguments.

Agree with the above comments. As Kevin said, at some point, even if you arent enamored with the Philippine medical system, get a recommendation for a Western trained doc and pay what is needed. Cant put a price on good health. Stay strong!!

John, you may have answered this before, but what do you do when you have to relieve yourself on those floating bars? When you walk in the restroom, is it just a hole in the floor?
I just dont figure them having any sort of sophisticated “sewer”system.
I probably dont want to know the answer, but figure I will ask anyways! LOL

That is one thing nice about Seoul – you did not have to go very far at all to get some “mountain hiking”. Stayed a lot of nights at the JW Marriott in Seoul, and right across the street were paths that led into “relative” wilderness. After 10 minutes of walking, it was easy to forget that I was in the middle of a metropolis of 10+ million people.

Did you ever contact that guy directly whose house you saw for sale? IIRC, you called the local agent and they said he was not interested in renting, only selling, you were going to contact him directly.

Yowza! I would almost have to be on deaths door to drink out of a stream close to sea level, especially in a place like the Philippines. Maybe he should invest invest in a LifeStraw? (I know, I know, closing the gate after the horse is gone and all that)
Is the Hashmobile owned by a hasher or something you rent?
(Be careful out there. Story recently in the States about a Ford Expedition that had 25!!! people in it and managed to get t-boned by a gravel truck. As you can imagine, the gravel truck won the matchup.)

So is the boat lady a “permanent” resident of the area, or just passing through as she takes her boat to the next port?
An interesting lifestyle, but unless you are talking about yachts, most boats (to me) seem quite small to live on full time. More power to her if that is what she likes!!

Good on ya’ John. Hope that “mama” appreciates what you are doing for her.
It does put things in perspective. A room like that – I look at it and go – ugh! She may look at it and see a suite at the Ritz Carlton.
Good on you to try. As Kevin (and you) have pointed out, many people are homeless by choice. Hopefully the room will give mama some self respect, and at the very least, a place she knows she has to sleep at night in relatively safety.

Just curious as to why are you looking for someplace else to live? Seems like you have put a lot of time/effort/money into “your” place, making it what you want it to be.
What are you looking for that the current place does not offer?

It does sound pretty irresponsible. From my readings, your Hash House is more of a social club with some hiking, not a hiking club with the occasional social aspect. Or at the maximum, it is equal parts hiking and socializing.
If the Hash House wants to remain viable, it has to appeal to all types. Setting hikes like the one you mention above will only end up decreasing membership.
If there is a faction that wants more hard core hikes, hey, let them form their own hiking club.

John, I mentioned a couple of posts ago that you had earned some good karma with the whole landlady situation.
Maybe I should have said – “No good deed goes unpunished!” LOL
I imagine that running a darts league is a bit like being on a condo board or a school board. A person puts alot of time and effort into it, all for no compensation, and all they get are headaches in return.

That is an impressive yearly mile total! 8.5 miles/day and I am sure you missed a day or two here and there, so you were probably close to 10 miles/day when you walked. That is awesome!
Sad story about your neighbor. Talk about a punch in the gut. 🙁 Seems that he has settled into the Philippines however, so good for making lemonade out of lemons.
