Alta Vista: Roosevelt Avenue

What? A street not named after a National Park? Well, in many ways, Theodore Roosevelt is considered the father of the American National Park system, so I guess this name is in keeping with the theme.

Roosevelt Avenue is the next street up from Acadia Avenue and pretty much runs parallel to it, although not quite as long.

A street view of Roosevelt.
A view from the street.

There are currently only two houses on Roosevelt Avenue.

This is one of them.

The folks that live here keep a pack of dogs. And on occasion, they let them roam the streets. I’ve seen them terrorize the other stray dogs. They tried that shit when I was walking by with mine and they were quite surprised when I fought back. The cowardly bastards took off and haven’t gotten close enough to cause me trouble since. I did complain to the guards about the dogs running loose, but of course, nothing was done about it. I used to live on the next street up and I’ve caught those dogs knocking over my garbage cans. One day when I was walking on Roosevelt there was a bag of trash out in the middle of the road. When I got closer I recognized that the contents were from my house. Those dogs actually carried a garbage bag home with them. Not my problem now.

This house was just built last year.

I wonder how the residents enjoy living across the street from those always barking dogs?

Another day, another street.

  1. I learned a lot about dealing with aggressive dogs during my seven years as a letter carrier. I pretty much just out-crazy them and they turn tail and run. Some people carry sticks when they walk to fend off dogs. I’ll pick up a rock on occasion, just doing so sends a message and the dogs usually just back off.

  2. Despite the dogs howling, thats’s a sweet residence. That rooftop looks like a helicopter landing pad. Are any of the streets named Congaree? As a former COLA town resident you are probably familiar with Congaree National Park right outside of Columbia. It is listed as one of the 10 least visited National Parks. I’ve got to admit, on my many journeys to Asheville I’ve past by the sign on I-26 for this park. Never took the bait. Always took the bait for Maurice’s BBQ though. Kind of feeling bad for the girl. My next Asheville trip is in October and i think i’ll give this gal a visit. I won’t ignore Maurice either. Or maybe RUSH. Peace Out!

  3. Jesus, Soju. You’ve got me craving some of that mustard-based BBQ from Maurice. And the chicken wings from Rush’s are the best!

Yes, I’ve actually hiked in Congaree a couple of times. Nice trails and cool footbridges in the swamp. Give it a go!

  4. There is a Theodore Roosevelt National park. On the western edge of North Dakota.

Very cool park. Spent about 5 days camping there a few years ago.

Enjoying the journey through your neighborhood.
