No pain, no gain

Welp, I did a Hash trail yesterday, just not the one the Hare intended. My trail had only one easy climb, one tricky downhill, and 4K of relatively painless hiking. Yep, you heard that right–my leg didn’t give me any trouble throughout the hike. I felt real good about that.

The Hare’s way featured several ups and downs on the 6K trail.
My version started at my house, had one up and one down, and a significant backtrack. It all added up to a healthy 4K jaunt.
Heading out of Alta Vista
And onto the familiar path I’ve dubbed “My Bitch”
And I briefly found myself on the Hare’s intended course.
And then two paths diverged in the woods, and I, being totally sane, took the path I’ve often traveled by, and that made all the difference.
Arriving at the famous Four Corners. I still had a ways to go on my solo hike before meeting up with Pubic Head at the mountain family’s place.
Time out for a selfie in the grass
Greetings to you, Easter Mountain!
Waiting for Pubic Head to arrive with Onelia and one of Jennifer’s children. Cookies and lollipops were the treats I delivered.
Heading back up the path I had just arrived on, Pubic Head was in over his head in the tall grass.
It’s much easier going without all the f’n thatch grass, that’s for sure.
By golly, we’ve reconnected with the Hare’s trail. But not for long.
Looking fit as a fattle…
It’s a rocky road, I scream!
Living la vida loca
Arriving unscathed at our On-Home venue, Johansson’s

It was a painless day on trail. Does it get any better than that?

Facebook memories brought a dose of sadness today with these pictures of two of my South Carolina darts buddies:

“Gunny” Taubl
and James Stoy

Both are now deceased. I am older than both were at the time of their passing. A good reminder that it’s all borrowed time, so enjoy it while you can.

Mortality casting its long shadow on this morning’s dog walk

Seriously, though, I’m not dwelling on how much sand is left in my hourglass. I try hard to live for today and not worry about tomorrow. Plus, I’m working on a plan for a heavenly afterlife when the time comes. Stay tuned!

Speaking of heaven on Earth, look what I found on today’s shopping excursion:

These were my favorite treat growing up. I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed one. Years and years, for sure!

A very busy morning, and I’ll be heading out soon to attend the grand opening of Barretto’s newest bar, Oasis. All the details to come in tomorrow’s post.

  1. Europeans who visit the US and try Twinkies think they’re horrible, chemical monstrosities. I, being American, love them. Here in Korea, there’s a treat that is so similar to a Twinkie that I wonder if it’s a shameless ripoff. Completely different shape, but exactly the same in every other respect—smell, texture, taste, etc.

Glad to hear there was no knee problem, but I do hope you go see your docs all the same.

  2. Second to what Kevin said on getting the knee checked out. WIth hiking being a big part of your life, you don’t want to be in fear on every hike such that it limits your enjoyment.

Re: Dwight Yoakam song – great song!!

  3. This comment is for @Kevin. Was not able to comment on his walking blog (possibly because I minimize cookies?), so will leave a comment here for him.

Regarding a hiking hat, I have the following with works well.

Instead of a brim that goes all the way around the hat, it has more of a flap at the back, which may eliminate the problem you are having. Looks dorky but works well.

Another thing I also use wihen hiking with a large backpack is a Gossamar Gear hiking umbrella, which (with an optional kit) attaches to the shoulder harness of the backpack to allow hands free usage. Works quite well.

  4. Looks like a good hat, Brian. Thanks. I’ll see if I can find a Korean (more likely Chinese since everything here is made in China) equivalent.

  5. Kev, sorta like those Choco Pies. They are about a third of the size of the real thing, a Moon Pie, but they are quite tasty. I buy them here every week. I’ve never seen a Moon Pie outside of the USA. The commissary didn’t even have them.

Gonna get the leg checked tomorrow.

  6. Re, Moon Pie. Told my wife to buy real LOTTE Choc pies instead of all faux all over Korea. Was I surprised, she came back with a box of Moon Pies. The real 1917 stuff. Camp Hunphries Commisary.

  7. Damn, wonder how I didn’t see on those full Moon Pies. Most people don’t know what they are missing! I sure do miss my commissary shopping days!
