I blew that sandwich up on my screen and studied it, but I’m still not sure I understand it.
Sorry about darts and breathing issues. I hope the doc can give you some good news—about your lungs if not about darts.

A well-done Hash. Kudos.

Alas, no. She had the intuition, though.

Look at all the fur on the back of that couch! Time for a lint roller!
Good luck walking your own route. May all your markers remain in place.

I’d say it’s important to learn from one’s experiences so as to keep growing and changing, but then it hit me: there are a million different ways to fuck up in this life, but the guy who always fucks up the same way at least has the advantage of not fucking up in a million different ways. So maybe learning from one’s mistakes is overrated.

Five of us road the Hash truck
Ah, phonetic spelling.
Looks to have been an adventure. I assume the people with tents elected to stay overnight.
What was the side that came with your cheesesteak? Batter-fried potatoes? Looked naughty and delicious.

Stay alive!

I’d say my bivy is indeed lighter than those one-man pop-ups. And it’s got no tent stakes or any of that other nonsense, aside from a groundsheet that serves as the bivy’s “footprint.”
» Posted By Kevin Kim On 27/May/2022 @ 10:49 am
My bivy tent is literally the size of a coffin, only a little bit bigger than my own body. So yeah, I do carry it in my backpack, along with a foam mat and a rolled-up sleeping bag.

Daniel’s got a large, luxurious tent compared to my bivy (example here). That’s a mansion compared to my little coffin.
Congrats on darts, and on the walk with Troy. Good luck with the upcoming trek!

I’ve never been much of a pork-chop guy, but one time in Oregon, when I was staying at someone’s residence during my 2008 attempt at a trans-America walk, the head of the house got on the grill and cooked an absolutely perfect pork chop. I still remember that dinner fondly.

Looks to have been a fun, eventful walk. And that appetizing pulled-pork sandwich makes me sad that I’m now fasting. Very sad.

Chili looks good! I’m looking closely at your crock pot for the first time and noticing it’s elliptical, the way mine is. Wonder if it’s the same brand.

Nice romp through the petals.
I didn’t say anything about JR in my previous comment because it sounded as if there were still some doubt as to the circumstances of his death. Frankly, slashing your own throat sounds like a very suspicious way to commit suicide. Most suicidal people prefer to die quickly, with minimal pain, not bleeding out in agony through the neck. Then again, if JR was a tough ex-Army guy, who could have done this to him? I don’t know what to think.
Anyway, I’m sorry to hear of his passing, and I’m more sorry for the family he leaves behind. I hope they find a way to take care of themselves. Will you be helping them out in some way, or do you feel this is none of your business? Either stance is understandable. This is a delicate situation, and still raw.

Then again, with the PI being so heavily Catholic, it could be that the three crosses were put up by Catholics. There are instances where Catholics do use crosses and not crucifixes, although these instances are infrequent (the Pope and other bishops might wear a “pectoral cross” on their chests on certain occasions, for example).
» Posted By Kevin Kim On 22/May/2022 @ 6:59 pm
Whoever put those crosses up there (probably Protestant if they’re crosses and not crucifixes, i.e. there’s no corpus of Jesus on the cross—the corpus makes it a crucifix, emphasizing Jesus’ suffering… the empty cross used by Protestants, meanwhile, emphasizes the resurrection) was leaning pretty heavily into the biblical imagery: Calvary/Golgotha, Jesus crucified with two thieves on either side of him, etc.
As for controversy… well, sometimes, all you need to do is make some offhand joke or remark, and there’s always some temperamental cunt waiting to be outraged. Usually a leftie, but as I recently discovered, it’s sometimes a rightie.

At least you got your socks. Sometimes, we celebrate the little triumphs in life.
Chicken parm (that one looks good!) is a dish I have yet to master. Seems straightforward, at least in principle, but as I’ve discovered, some dishes that look easy aren’t actually easy. A good chicken parm is like an Italian-American answer to an Austrian Wienerschnitzel or a Japanese/Korean donkatsu/donggaseu. It’s a symphony of different flavors and textures—saucy, crunchy, and cheesy.
That National Highway doesn’t look as if it has much of a road shoulder. Yikes. So I guess the PI is like the States, then: it doesn’t want to build a national system of walking/biking routes to allow for free and safe navigation by the “unmotored.” More reason for me to be thankful for the system in place here in Korea. You guys in the PI are roughing it.

The PI has eleven species of tarantula. Yay! But according to the linked article, the largest spider there is the huntsman spider, which is the same big fucker that famously lives in Australia. You can find all sorts of huntsman-spider videos on YouTube.

Oh, yeah—meant to say “Get well soon!” to Chris. Sucks to break a bone.

Do the banana plantations have tarantulas in them? I used to own four tarantulas (consecutively, not simultaneously). I miss having one as a pet, and I’d love to have another. Female spiders have about the lifespan of a horse, i.e., around 30 years.
The wall mural featuring Mount Fiji
Pretty sure that’s Mt. Fuji. Alcohol might be good aiming fluid, but I’m not sure it’s good typing fluid.

Congrats on the weight loss. May it continue! Sorry to hear about darts. As for stopping the “On This Day” series, yeah, I could take it or leave it, so stopping it won’t be a tragedy.

Another walk in the books. Keep ’em coming!

Life rolls on, and the beers roll in.
Pot roast looks good!
Sorry to harp on the lung issue, but I know you’ve dealt with COPD, and I can’t help but think of Leonard Nimoy, who had quit smoking decades earlier, yet his COPD caught up with him in the end. I don’t know much about that condition, but Nimoy’s case shows that it can be latent for long periods before randomly striking. That’s scary stuff, so please stay on top of your lung-related problems.
Otherwise, walk on!

For what it’s worth, I think taking time out to be lazy once in a while isn’t a huge sin. Just be careful not to make it a habit.

Finished my night at Outback, where I think my friend, the bartender, and I have put aside our differences.
Two people, or three?
1. my friend the bartender
2. me[or]
1. my friend
2. the bartender
3. meI recently wrote a comma chapter on appositives that deals with when to use or avoid commas. If the bartender is your friend, and the fact that he’s a bartender is necessary information, then you don’t need the commas:
Finished my night at Outback, where I think my friend the bartender and I have put aside our differences.
If you did indeed mean three people, though, you might consider reversing the order of the list for clarity:
Finished my night at Outback, where I think the bartender, my friend, and I have put aside our differences.
Even the above might produce some ambiguity, though, so perhaps you can solve the problem with the insertion of names.
Finished my night at Outback, where I think the bartender Rico, my friend Sam, and I have put aside our differences.
That ape on the street has impressive biceps.
I’m pretty sure I noted this on my own blog, but I can’t remember whether I left this insight on yours: Ernest Becker, a psychologist, suggests that people commit suicide when they no longer see themselves as the hero of their own personal narratives. It’s important, then, for us to reaffirm the central status we have in the story of our own lives. Not to a pathological extent, of course, but to a healthy extent for sure. A little self-esteem means we’re still alive.

I hope you see the doc soon and find out your lung issues are minor. Worst thing in the world is for a walker to be flat on his back all the time.

Susan heading home on My Bitch.
Man, that’s a strange image. Sounds as though “My Bitch” is the name of a horse.

Beats the hell out of being stuck in some sterile [retirement-home] environment.
Undeniably so. Then again, if you’re 66—which is young by today’s standards—and in a retirement home, you’ve got problems.
Still shaking my head about the lady who could barely walk a single kilometer. What’ll she be like when she’s 66?
» Posted By Kevin Kim On 11/May/2022 @ 4:25 pm
Nice hike, even with the extra distance.
The liquor ban was still in effect, so we all stayed longer than usual at the On-Home (we usually pack up and head out to a local bar for some post-Hash drinking. It was odd to be stumbling home in the dark, but I made it without incident.
The other parenthesis broke ranks and got away, I gather. At least the quoted text has the virtue of being comma’ed correctly.

«« Back To Stats PageAbout “biscuit”: well, that’s British English, for sure. What the Brits call “scones” are pretty close to what we Yanks call “biscuits.”
Of course, as much as I respect the Brits and their version of English, I have to say that I don’t trust those good folks when it comes to food, not when their word “pudding” signifies pretty much anything! So confusing!
See more here.
