Third rate romance…

I found this water channel rather aesthetically pleasing.

A lot of those irrigation channels can be found alongside Korean farms. Nice.

Club sandwich looks good. Want.

The dishwasher/sandwich-maker meme reminds me that my buddy Mike, in the States, uses “dead Asian hooker” as a unit of measurement for car trunks. “Ah, that’s a five-dead-Asian-hooker trunk,” he’ll say.

Regarding compounds: there are several types: closed compounds, hyphenated compounds, and open compounds. Open compounds count as two words because they are literally two separate words (but because they collocate frequently, they’re considered compounds). Closed compounds and hyphenated compounds are considered to be one word.

schoolchildren (closed = 1 word)
shithouse (closed = 1 word)
chit-chat (hyphenated = 1 word)
pussy-eater (hyphenated = 1 word)
dining room (open = 2 words)

Nice walk. Green and beautiful as always. Lots of ambulating beef this time around.

‘Twas the Tuesday before Christmas

I seem to recall a story though, about Jesus turning water into beer without a brewery

I think that was Viking Jesus.

There was some kind of [best-dressed] contest going on.

Too bad Aine wasn’t there (or did I miss her in the pic?). She knows how to dress in a way that’s both sleek and provocative. (As long as she’s not using her artificial chest!)

Generous landlord for sure. Wow.

Those pricing scams are shameless. Good that you’re on the lookout.

Take it to the ridgeline

Those kids really are cute.

At least, now, there’s someone slower than you. Is he gonna be a regular? And did he appear in any of the pics you displayed above? It’s like that thing you hear about being fat: to appear thinner, hang around people who are fatter than you.

At least it was a nice walk. 8K through hilly terrain is not bad.

Paying for what you get

Ever tried grilled or seared Brussels sprouts? Amazing ways to handle an otherwise dreary vegetable.

Except when April arrived, she wasn’t hungry, saying she ate with her kids before leaving home.

At first, I read that as “she ate her kids before leaving home.” Prepositions save lives.

Sorry the meal with “April” was for nothing. You go to great lengths to preserve an illusion, I must say. If you’re really seeking love, find the woman who comes to you for you, not for your damn money.

At least you didn’t suffocate. We’ll chalk that up as a plus. The other plus is that you got a different set of girls to enjoy your balls. Conan, what is good in life? Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the women slurping on your balls.

The Mango’s Christmas menu looks excellent, even if the cold-shrimp appetizer looks weirdly incongruous. Still, I wouldn’t say no to cold shrimp and guac. As for buffets in general, I’m a big fan. I don’t care too much about other people’s snot and spit getting in my food. Toughens the immune system, I say.

Nice walk. Rivers and bridges and mountains—oh, my!

Good to see pics of the dawgs. More, more! If nothing else, you’ve made two little souls very happy, and not by giving them money.

I hope today’s Hash went well.

Stranger danger

Yes

» Posted By Kevin Kim On 19/December/2022 @ 9:01 am

John,

What size tee shirt do you wear? I’ve thought of a shirt design for you.

» Posted By Kevin Kim On 19/December/2022 @ 8:21 am

Stranger danger, indeed. Just don’t let any axe murderers into your home.

Good to know John seems to be doing better.

“Not another SOB!” he cried

No doc, but when I searched online, PF matched all of my symptoms, including the migrating pain that starts in the heel and moves across the bottom of the foot. 8-12 weeks of healing, the experts say. So I’ve been lazing about. Thinking about breaking out my bike to get in some cardio, but it’s icy here, now, so I have to wait until things clear up.

But just so you know, it was Whiskey Girl, Voodoo, and Wet Spot.

Those are the top three, but which one was first place? Do I read this as “3rd, 2nd, 1st” or as “1st, 2nd, 3rd”? Assuming home-field advantage, I might guess that Whiskey Girl was the overall winner.

Martin’s still thinning out. Good for him.

That resting place is called a “shwimteo” in Korean. Pronounce it “shweem-taw.” Literally “resting place.”

Something caught my eye about the word “junglely,” and I finally figured out it was that extra “L” at the end, which kind of turns it into an adverb. How about “jungle-y”?

Trivia: I say “kind of” because you could counter-argue that there are plenty of adjectives that end in -ly. Friendly, kingly, kindly, matronly, fatherly, etc.

Looks to have been a really good walk. I haven’t walked since my 20K jaunt to visit my professor friend back in early November. Trying to heal from plantar fasciitis. I ought to be good to go a bit after Christmas.

Bars of Barretto: Showgirl

Playing into the small-and-cozy ambiance, I think booth-style seating might lend a feeling of close-in, snug privacy. Take out that stage, and you’d have room for several booths.

» Posted By Kevin Kim On 18/December/2022 @ 8:25 am

Those chicks are indeed pretty chunky. And at least one is kind of knock-kneed.

I’m not sure that a small, cozy bar should even have a stage. The ambiance would be all wrong.

Here comes Santa Claus

Showing off your best self. Good for you, making others happy. Carry on, Father John!

Gettin’ time for Martin to break out the Santa suit, too, isn’t it?

Two for the road

Glad to know John Kim seems to be doing better. I hope this isn’t temporary.

If it ain’t fixed, don’t break it

Good luck getting your phone fixed (or will you be getting another phone instead?). Maybe your phone’s last act was to save your ass from even greater pain, like a Secret Service agent jumping into the path of a bullet.

A phoney-ass Hash

That’s quite a tumble! Do keep checking yourself periodically: as with car accidents, some internal bumps don’t show up immediately. Watch for stiffness and limited range of motion. Do some easy exercises to check your joints, etc.—stuff like squats, neck rotations, etc. Look for any twinges.

Semi-related point: have you thought about buying a spirometer to check your lung capacity? They’re available via Amazon. There are battery-operated and manual versions. I’d get a manual one. Less maintenance. Anyway, with a spirometer, you can track your lung capacity over time. That’s extra data you can bring to your doctor.

Aside from that, it looks to have been an impressive hike. Good luck getting your regular phone repaired.

For lovin’ me

I’m sure your employees appreciate your largesse. The whole “one year’s work plus one month’s pay” arrangement is standard with labor contracts in Korea. The extra month of pay is part of your severance package. Work three years for a company, get three extra months’ pay on your way out the door.

The mile-by-mile shots show a more or less nice walk, except maybe for those highway stretches.

John still sounds as though he really needs to go to the hospital. A good hospital. I’m just wondering how he got into this mess to begin with. He didn’t look particularly unhealthy in any of the photos of him that you’ve shown us.

And please keep on top of your own pulmonary situation. It seems that, compared to last year, the frequency of these episodes has gone up.

That really sticks in my crawl

Looks to have been an exhausting adventure. It’s quirky how you mix the Yank expression “bar hop” with the Brit expression “pub crawl” to give us “bar crawl,” but the idea comes across clearly. I’ve long thought the Brits had it right, anyway: it’s always been more of a “crawl” than a “hop” given how plastered one can get. Congrats on surviving.

A tight SOB

He needs to be hospitalized pronto.

Well, a big Happy Birthday to Scott, Troy, and Jim!

How’s John doing, by the way? He’s always in the back of my mind.

The lies have it

I get that you don’t have any girlfriends floating around somewhere, but if I recall correctly, you’re getting gratifying happy-ending massages from people like tooth-flashing Joy and your mountain mama. Surely, you can see that that might make a prospective girlfriend unhappy. I agree that you don’t actively lie to women, but you also conveniently gloss over the fact that you’re still technically married. If that were to come up in conversation with a potential girlfriend, she’d likely be gone lickety-split, given the jealous nature of the Pinays (and any rational women, really). These inconvenient facts don’t add up to a pretty picture, and you end up looking as if you’re trying to have it both ways.

I need to be clear about this, though: I personally don’t judge you for how you live your life. If I’m to be honest, there are aspects of your life, laid out on your blog, that I find unsavory, and in your place I’d do things radically differently, but even with as much as I know from the information you give us readers on the blog, I’m also aware that I still don’t know the whole story. And even if I did, I know you’re a “grown-ass man,” as they say these days, and you can live your life however you damn well please. This is why you never hear me come to your blog’s doorstep and say stupid shit like, “You’re violating the laws of God.” Honestly, I couldn’t care less what you do.

I do care, though, to the extent that these lies are stressing you out, but part of the solution may be to see the situation as others see it. The rumor that you “have a girlfriend” may have started precisely because these small-town people know you have a thing for happy-ending massages. So, in their minds, “massages” have become “girlfriend” because the locals are aware, on some level, that something naughty may be going on. I don’t know; this is just a theory. At the very least, I’m pretty sure Lydell wouldn’t be happy to find out you’ve been, say, getting fulfillment from another source.

None of this matters to me, as I’ve said, but it’s going to matter to people who might want a certain level of intimacy with you. You might say that the massages aren’t intimate at all; it’s purely a biological activity and a business transaction to boot. Okay. But again, that’s not how a prospective girlfriend is going to see it, especially if she’s thirty years younger and still clinging to the fading remains of a girlish naiveté.

A stupid sci-fi novel I read, years ago, was Children of the Jedi by Barbra Hambly. Awful book, but it had one really good line, a warrior’s creed: “Be what you wish to seem.” Wanna seem to be a hero? Then be a hero. This is a good standard for moral conduct because it’s not about God or commandments or judgy people with puckered assholes: it’s about you holding yourself up to your own standards of good and bad, right and wrong.

(Trivia: years later, I realized that my high school’s Latin motto, esse non videri, was saying the same thing: Being, not seeming. This is what integrity is about: your outside and inside match.)

So to make the noble self-image match the reality, you may have to stop with the massages, or at least with the happy endings. That may be difficult for a man so committed to sexual gratification (heh), but if you are to be what you wish to seem, this may be your only path.

Apologies if this comment is offensive, but in my defense, I calls ’em like I sees ’em. In the end, I hope you lead a drama-free life.

PS: sometimes, though, rumors start for no good reason at all. In the 1990s, when I was young and maybe a bit handsome, I worked at my first language institute in Seoul. There was also a Korean lady who taught Japanese there, and she and I would talk on occasion. This little bit of contact somehow led to the rumor that she and I were sleeping together. I laughed loudly and long when the rumor finally circled around to me. I was a stud and didn’t even know it!

A pig in the Alley

Her name is literally “Irish”? Interesting.

Hope you had fun chomping down on that pig’s head.

Birfday food all looks good. Happy Birfday to Dean!

Even in that old photo, you were doing that weird puffy-lips thing even back then. Reminds me of those photos of bee-stung dogs.

Interesting how the color-code chart has no color for “dangerous.”

That pie-vent meme is hilarious. Reminds me of Dane Cook’s joke about how he doesn’t like women who are too “lippy.” Too much flesh down there reminds him of a middle-schooler in a school play struggling through all those curtains to get onstage.

Feedin’ the girls tonight? Y’all have fun!

Four and twenty virgins

Nuts.

“Sing a Song of Sixpence” (with Song capitalized)

» Posted By Kevin Kim On 07/December/2022 @ 3:06 pm

When I saw the phrase “four and twenty,” I immediately thought of “four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie” (from the old classic “Sing a song of Sixpence”), so I ruthlessly stole from that poem to make my own. Standing on the shoulders of giants, if you will.

» Posted By Kevin Kim On 07/December/2022 @ 3:04 pm

sing a song of sixpence,
a pocket full of rye:
we’ve four and twenty Hashers
all baked into a pie.

when the pie was opened,
the Hashers sang, “On-On!”
now, wasn’t that a dainty dish
to eat before the dawn?

the Hare was on the toilet
and pushing out a shit
the virgin Hasher was outside
her new name: Stinky Clit

the Hash this time was grueling
with slopes and stairs galore
and Stinky Clit already was
reputed as a whore

she fucked the fast and slow ones
they all busted a nut
and some of us could not decide
between the pie or slut

but on we march, the Hashers
for none shall stop us now
not slopes nor stairs nor pies nor Clits
we soldier on, and how!

At one point, he had actually tied the tall thatch grass together in an attempt to hide the alternative path. I saw through that gesture and took some joy in breaking through the barricade while shouting a hearty “follow me!” to the rest of our group. Good times!

It would never have occurred to me to think of the Hash as a battle of wits, but in a small town, what else are people going to do if not fuck with each other?

And here’s a quick peak into the future for y’all

Spot the untoward homonym!

Man, parts of that trail looked steep. As I mentioned before, I no longer have the balance for that sort of thing.

Street walkers

My brain paused there longer than it should have.

Adverb placement can be a bitch. I should’ve put the “with” right after “studying.” Or better, I should’ve just rewritten that whole sentence.

Close. “Kaht-tyah.”

Stupid mistakes best left in the past.

The girls were named Katja and Karen. Karen was a mousy little bitch who followed Katja around everywhere, and I had the hots for Katja—a situation that I ended up ruining through a series of stupid mistakes. We were all part of the Georgetown study-in-Fribourg (Switzerland) program. Seven of us went to Switzerland that year: five girls, two guys. We were there when the Berlin Wall came down. Went to Berlin a week after the official collapse. Very cool.
