There’s nothing quite like working your spiritual problems out just before you leave a place. Heh.
Maybe your next trip here will be a far more pleasant one.

It may be a few years before you finally make peace with life in Korea. Understandable. This country leaves a bad taste in the mouth for many.

Sounds as if there’s much to be sentimental about, except for the price of everything. Happy walking!

Tasty advice from ol’ Uncle Hannibal.
You had what the French call a “well-watered night.”

From the Land of the Morning Calm
An impressive amount of walking, indeed. Welcome back to the madness!

OK. I’ll see you inside the Hamilton’s lobby at noon on Saturday. Safe travels!

Saturday or Sunday, lunch-ish, will work for me.
It’s not crippling or anything, but I’m hoping the foot problem will go away soon so I can try the walk the following week. How long are you in Korea? I could also try to meet up for dinner on a weekday if the weekend will be reserved for hangover-recovery after a mighty Friday. I normally arrive late at the office and work until late, but I can easily rearrange my work schedule.
We can still go for a Namsan hike, which will be much shorter than a Seoul-Yangpyeong trek. And, hey—it’ll be another chance for you to make me feel like an ass.

I had planned on doing another insane 60-kilometer walk this weekend, but there’s something going on with my right foot, so I’m canceling, and I’ll have time this weekend to meet up. Say the word!

I have a good friend who used to write “for all intensive purposes.” He also used to spell “university” as “univercity.” I once corrected this friend when he wrote about a “character arch” [when he meant “character arc”], and again when he wrote “afterall” as one word. And he keeps making up excuses for his gaffes, e.g., “It was Auto-correct” or “I was tired” or “I was in a rush.” Sigh… He’s always tired or in a rush or using Auto-correct. Excuses, excuses.
But after a while, you stop correcting such friends because you realize your corrections simply aren’t sinking in. It’s hopeless. He’s a great talker, this friend of mine—a real raconteur. I’m not, but I’m a fairly fastidious writer. It’s enough to make me wonder whether it’s mutually exclusive, being good on paper versus being good verbally. A lot of raconteurs whom I know are horrible at writing—especially spelling. It’s as if they don’t care, or they expect others to do the editing that they themselves ought to do. They’re not self-conscious enough to clean up after themselves, linguistically speaking.
That’s not true of everyone, though: I was happy to see “samgyeopsal” above, instead of the eyeball-bleeding “sam-gyap-sal.”
So, switching gears: just how walkable are the usual trails in the PI when it’s rainy season?

You’ve doubtless heard the joke about the Scottish uncle who comes to America to visit his American relatives. He’s out with the family to watch a local minor-league baseball game, but he’s having trouble understanding what’s going on. A batter comes to the plate; four pitches go past him; he swings at none of them, then starts walking briskly—not running—to first base.
The Scottish uncle, incensed, stands up and shouts, “Run, ya lazy bastard!” He feels a tug at his sleeve. It’s one of his young American nephews.
“He doesn’t have to run,” the kid explains. “He’s got four balls.” The uncle blinks in astonishment, then stands up again and screams:
“Walk with pride, laddie! Walk with pride!”

By the way, the dick on the map looks fine, but the balls are kind of old and shriveled. That’s not something you should advertise to the ladies.

Scrambled eggs with ham and potato? So it was on its way to becoming a Spanish omelette, but it got distracted at the local whorehouse, forgot about the potatoes and onion, and picked up some leggy-looking ham and tomatoes?

May the dark clouds blow away soon. You’ve got people in other countries who’re rooting for you.
As for that tall grass… it reminded me a bit of elephant grass (which is apparently a generic term for several types of tall grass).

One lifetime, many lives–Chapter Four: So many women, so little time
A whore-ible life. A real whore-or story. You remind me a bit of my sophomore-year roommate Travis, who banged anything that moved, and who juggled several girlfriends at once. The dude was always unconsciously scratching his crotch, though, which made me worry that he might’ve been sharing more than love and DNA with his harem. Last I saw before I left LinkedIn, Travis was leading exactly the opposite of the life he’d led in college: he had gotten married, had had kids, and had become a suit-wearing corporate drone—a far cry from the poetry-writing, guitar-playing, man-whoring, hard-partying dude he used to be. Funny how life works, eh? Some people gotta sow their wild oats, I guess, while others of us take a more measured approach to life. I’m guessing Travis was (still is?) more of a “laugh with the sinners” guy. Life isn’t about crying with the saints. The sinners are much more fun, and hey: only the good die young.

And a good time was had by all. Well done! When do you Hare next?

Buckminster Fuller had his “Buckyballs,” so it’s only natural that Buddy should have his Buddyballs.
And yeah, when a dog or cat shows its underside without being threatened, that’s definitely a sign of comfort and trust.
Good luck to the Hashers!

I hope the Hash goes off without a hitch, but I admit I’m morbidly interested in hearing what the complaints might be. Someone’s always gotta bitch about something…
Were the dogs really pouting in that photo? Is that actually what it looks like when they pout? Hilarious, if so.

That really sucks re: the neighbor. Asians often seem to confuse cause and effect when it comes to matters of simple justice. Maybe take Veronica with you on subsequent walks through that neighborhood. She might have a method for distracting the angry dog. Heh.

“Regardless, we made it there and back again without incident.”
Looks to have been a good walk, Mr. Tolkien.

Found a whole trove of “Jesus can’t go Hashing” songs here.
Congrats on 50 runs! That’s a lotta diarrhea!
» Posted By Kevin Kim On 14/May/2019 @ 5:57 pm
By the way, thanks for the BLT pic. Now please avert your eyes while I sob.
» Posted By Kevin Kim On 13/May/2019 @ 6:08 pm
I hope the dogs are okay, and that the neighbor will know never to let her dog loose again. Maybe bring a spiked baseball bat (or a medieval morning star) to future walks. Or at least a can of pepper spray and/or a taser.
» Posted By Kevin Kim On 13/May/2019 @ 4:53 pm
Now I’m hungry for a BLT, dammit. Thanks for putting that in my head.
Peace and blessings to your departed mom. She sounds like a great lady.

A year well spent, I think. And as you wrote earlier, you’re now part of a community of people who refuse to take life lying down. Congrats on surviving and thriving a whole year in the PI! Here’s to many more equally constructive and instructive years.
» Posted By Kevin Kim On 11/May/2019 @ 5:36 pm
So you’re pretty close to the one-year mark for your time in the Philippines. Congratulations on that.
As for your post’s title… I was sure you were going to be quoting Neil Diamond’s “Love on the Rocks.”

I still think the age-gap thing is a bit pervy, but far be it from me to stomp on anyone’s lifestyle, so… more power to the geezers! If Clint Eastwood can do it with minimal grumbling from the peanut gallery, then anyone can! Nature designed the male human to be firing off his DNA well into his nineties, and who are we to debate nature?
» Posted By Kevin Kim On 09/May/2019 @ 4:42 pm
Amazing how well that works, eh? I really think it has to do with not frying in oil. All you’re left with is egg and cheese and seasoning.
I neglected to mention in my own blog post that I had the idea for sous-vide eggs, and when I Googled the concept, I saw that people had already done it (of course; it’s hard to have an original idea these days).
Glad it worked out for you. The taste alone makes this worth it.

Congrats on surviving the treacherous, rainy path!
If you’re so inclined, feel free to let me know when you’re in Seoul. We’ll hit a Brazilian rodizio; those’re Atkins-friendly so long as you stick to the meat. My treat. I might be on my austerity program, but I’ll gladly make an exception that day.

I admire your fleet-footed nature. For me, rain is cause for fear whenever I hit a mountain trail: everything gets muddy and slippery. Or are you wearing especially sharp golf cleats on your shoes to prevent slippage?
The dawgs look immensely happy. I’m mentally contrasting that with those sad-sack images of Lucky before he became your dog.
