Mark, thanks for the encouragement. And yeah, there are at least some shreds of a silver lining. Like you, I’m a big fan of Nikki Haley but she won’t be the first female president. No way Biden makes it through his term. I’m guessing a year at most.

Well, perhaps the best scenario under a Harris administration (does anyone really think Biden will be our leader?) is that she will overreach. Damage will be done of course, but maybe not permanent damage, and the American people will wake up and throw the bums out of office. Of course, now that they’ve learned to steal elections maybe they don’t care.

Yes, I’ve done the Easter mountain climb once before. It’s really tough. The Hash does an Easter run up there every year. Well, not this year because of the COVID bullshit. I might give it another go someday but it will be a challenge for sure.

Well, I woke up at midnight last night and thought about coming downstairs to see the results. But then I was afraid I wouldn’t get back to sleep if the news was bad. And it is not looking good this morning.

Things have been a little off this year. Normally, typhoons drive the rainy season but we didn’t really see those kinds of storms in that timeframe. Having the big storms this late in the year is unusual. Yeah, there was a tropical depression following behind Rolly but it may not develop into a full-fledged typhoon.

Ouch! I didn’t know just how much you hated Brown until I read your post from 2004! you linked. I prefer to think of it as foreshadowing rather than a cheap and dirty narrative hook.

Brian, it is a re-start the clock after 3 years type of thing. Not a problem for me as I intend to travel several times a year. At least I did until this COVID thing fucked everything up. I should be good though until 2022 anyway.
I am hoping the Philippines doesn’t emulate Thailand regarding visas. Wouldn’t make sense to do so, but then again, the actions of the government here never seem to make much sense.

Pete, I’m eligible for the SSRV, a retirement visa. In fact, I started the application process when I first moved here. It got to be too much of a pain in the ass so I just gave it up. I get 60 days at a time for 3000 pesos on tourist visa renewals for up to three years, then you have to leave the country and start over. I heard some offices give 6-month extensions, but not Olongapo. Takes me 15 minutes or so, so easy enough. If I decide to do the SSRV in the future I’ll probably use an agent so I don’t have to deal with the hassle.

Kev, I will definitely need to be more discreet about my poor word choices. I actually know the difference but sometimes my brain just goes “that SOUNDS right” and moves on. I always do a quick proofread and catch the most egregious errors, but this one sailed right under the radar. Yeah, I’m not exactly sure who gets credit for this shirt, I suspect it might be Guenter who I understand creates games for the internet for a living. I always do feel more confident when I know I can create my own Plan B if the hike isn’t to my liking. Nothing like these guys who’ve been here for 10+ years though. I’ll see a path and they say, oh, we did that one back in 2009…you wouldn’t like it. 🙂

Well, the rainy season is a pain in the ass sometimes, but this too shall end. Given the shoddy construction of the powerlines were are probably lucky to not have even more frequent outages, especially when it gets windy. I will say the power company has been pretty prompt with restoring service.
The 5K was just a shorter version of the 8K. The people doing the long trail were passing me before I finished the short trail.

Budai technically has an owner (one of the subdivision maintenance guys) but he seems happy to have me feeding his dog for him. So, at best Budai will be a stepchild or visiting cousin. I don’t let her in the house and I don’t want my boys mating with her either.

Yeah, that’s why your Korea photos really make me miss an orderly, well-kept infrastructure. Bike paths along the riverside have never even crossed anyone’s mind here I reckon. Hell, sidewalks barely exist.

Kev, everything I’ve seen done here is always done half-assed. They’ve been working on a drainage ditch on the National highway through town for over a year now. There are still lots of gaps because the power company can’t be fucked with moving the power poles.
Brian, I had seriously considered a generator and lots of people have them (I can hear them in the neighborhood) but honestly the power outages have been infrequent and short enough that I’ve not bothered with it. No natural gas lines, there is a tank for my stove.

Thanks, James. Yeah, the advantage to being a Hare is making the kind of trail you like. I would guess most of the Hash participants like to avoid extremes as well.
Yeah, the gal you mention hasn’t been there recently but she will probably come next week for the anniversary run. Oh well, all my ex’s don’t live in Texas so shit happens. 🙂
Well, I wouldn’t call it a Hash, but our Wednesday and Friday gatherings are almost always a good time! And we usually finish at Cheap Charlies for rehydration purposes.

Terry, you noticed her too, huh? She is amazing looking. I’d reckon her to be close to six feet tall which makes her a giant amongst Filipinas. I don’t know much about her other than she’s married and lives on the old Navy base with her husband who’s also a Hasher but hasn’t attended recently. She always catches my eye though and I enjoy walking behind her on trail. I sometimes tell the small Filipinas there is only one thing better than long legs wrapped around your back–short legs trying! Now I’m not so sure.

Ah, it is not that big a deal. I did a singles league in Columbia and in Seoul. Pre-pandemic we had a team league in Barretto. It just occurred to me that a singles league is better suited to these crazy times. The games will be played in the bars that have dartboards, but instead of having a dozen people crowding around, you’ll just have the two competitors. It’s not a professional league or a for-profit venture, so there should not be any legalities involved. The only downside is that it gets to be a pain in the ass keeping up with the stats and admin stuff. Still, I probably need to do something to keep my brain engaged lest I become Bidenesque.

I can totally relate, Soju. I rarely give money to kids because I don’t want them to believe that begging is a way of life. Also, a lot of kids are being used as fronts for their drug-addicted parents/sponsors. I’m also more inclined to give to people like “mama” who have a clear need but also the dignity not to ask but to graciously accept.
And yes, I concur that we have an obligation to make the world around us a better place than how we found it. I do take comfort in knowing that I’ve made things easier for some at least.

I’ve bought some trinkets before but my refrigerator can only hold so many magnets. I normally wouldn’t even think twice about throwing out a little money to help someone in need. But day after day wears thin. One time I only had a few pesos in my pocket, maybe 50 or 60 cents worth. And the guy wouldn’t take them because it wasn’t enough! So yeah, that told me it might be bullshit.
Upon reflection, I’ll concede the masseuse only asked for an advance on her pay and I could have handled it more diplomatically. She keeps asking for another chance and I told her I needed a break–maybe next week. She seemed thankful to be suspended rather than fired. She says she has learned her lesson.
As for Ester’s food stand, I am giving her a hundred bucks so she can buy some meat to sell with her veggies. I appreciate the fact that she never asked and is very humble and thankful. I did tell her I expect to be paid back when she becomes rich in the food business. She laughed and promised she would not forget me.
Brandon, yeah I don’t know what the other side of the story from Alley Cats might be. Regardless, the bar should have had the decency to tell the girls they won’t be coming back. Not my business though and I can always take my business somewhere else if it bothers me.
