Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday
While I do wish you and Swan the best, if I were in your shoes I would soberly ask myself:
Would she be interested in me at all if I weren’t about to: (1) move into, and start paying the rent for, the very house she already lives in and shared for years with her recently departed lover; and (2) start paying her to be my domestic helper?
And under these circumstances could I ever really be confident that she’s into me anyway?
Could I handle frustration for long, especially while imbibing gratuitously?
Maybe something genuine will grow and blossom. Maybe she’ll, ahem, hold out until she feels eviction is imminent or she finds an alternative arrangement. Maybe it would be best to just be friends and domestic companions while pursuing transactional liaisons elsewhere. Or maybe it would just be best to fish in a different river.
Your life. Your pera. Your choice. Best made while sober.

I’m with you on this one. The voucher says good for 500 pesos, and not for x number of beers. Unless the voucher clearly states that promos are excluded, the bar should have honored the value of the voucher, period. You’re buying beers with a voucher rather than cash. But you’re still buying. How you obtained the voucher is irrelevant. I really hate petty shit like this. So short-sighted. Kills the party boner. Good opportunity to explore other venues.

Though presumably well-intended, that law is so terribly drafted as to be preposterous and subject to bizarre and arbitrary interpretation.
Who knew “beer joint” was a legal term?
And “any public or private place” would seem to cover the bases sufficiently and render any further enumeration redundant.
As written, the law would seem to apply if you were at the beach and a minor was present, even if accompanied by both parents. There’s no clear exception for non-relatives of accompanied minors.
And what constitutes “in his company?” If some kid walks up and tries to sell you food or trinkets, or even sits next to you on a bus, how fast and far must you run to avoid potential exposure to a criminal charge having a penalty of life in prison?

You might also try some spinach (raw or cooked) in a burrito or quesadilla. Kinda healthy and all that. Fried egg can also be an option for either. Or even a little fried tofu, properly seasoned. I dig meat but am minimizing my intake for health reasons. That said, I do occasionally enjoy longganisa (the savory kind from Vigan, not the sweet kind). Plenty of fresh chunky salsa (not that watery shit in a bottle), guacamole, and some sour cream will make just about any protein burrito filler taste really good.

Spending more on lady drinks than rent would seem to indicate a budgetary imbalance, especially if the lady drinks don’t lead to a, ahem, logical conclusion. Perhaps these expenditures belong in the charity column. And then you’re spending quite a bit more on charity than rent. Your pera, your choice. But remember, your landlord ain’t in the charity business. And neither are most bar girls.

I must confess that I never heard of Justin Aldean prior to this nonsense. So I checked out the song for myself. It’s ok, not great. I won’t go out of my way to hear it again. Offensive? Obviously some folks are actively seeking reasons to be, or at least act, offended. There’s power in that these days. And as is so often the case, many are choosing to react to subjective negative descriptions and interpretations of the song, rather than the actual song. And so many in the media just pile on, lest they be viewed as insufficiently outraged and fall under suspicion themselves in the farcical Woke American Cultural Revolution Snowflake Festival.
Regarding the underage thing, it certainly does happen — but not necessarily with a foreigner, who would be wise to steer very clear. Quite often a relative or neighbor or other familiar person is initially involved, and then it expands and continues…
Anyway, keep taking the high road with Swan.

But would she really be “alright with the idea” if she were the one paying the rent and you were staying there for free and getting paid for providing some help and limited companionship after your former squeeze passed? I hate to be a wet blanket again, but it might be prudent to carefully consider (if you haven’t already) and maybe discuss with Swan the wisdom of living with her in the very home in which she lived with her former man and no doubt made many lasting memories. It just doesn’t seem like a good recipe for recovering and moving on with someone new, even slowly. It does seem like a good way to remain in the place, make a little money, and keep the new guy at arms’s length while figuring out the future. Not that there’s necessarily anything nefarious or devious about that. But it sure is convenient. As for eventually turning a new leaf? This might be a long, slow burn indeed. At any rate, best wishes to both parties.

Check out the Khmer (Cambodian) version of that song by the California-based group Dengue Fever, on Youtube. The music is familiar enough but the language makes it more intriguing and pretty awesome. (It played at the end of the 2002 film City of Ghosts, which is pretty good too.) Some of their other music is also really cool but may be something of an acquired taste. Cheers.

At the risk of sounding like a cynical dick, I’ll gently state the obvious: she gets to remain in the home, and continue the standard of living, to which she has grown accustomed.
Hopefully there’s much more than that, but it kinda behooves you to keep your eyes wide open and perhaps guard your testicles as you charge into a new thicket d’amour, especially after emerging from previous feminine briar patches with painful bruises and scratches.
Of course you fully realize all this at some level, so don’t let your navigation be overly influenced by beer confidence, needy emotion, or ambitions of the little head.

Ah, the road paved with good intentions…
Just a friendly note of caution. Providing a lump sum in advance to a person with poor financial management skills rarely works out well, especially if they are the impressionable type who may decide, or be convinced, that they can now afford some big ticket item because they have the cash in hand, with remaining monthly needs or outstanding debts pushed aside as problems to worry about later or conveniently convert into someone else’s problems if at all possible. You see where this is going.
I have found that the best forms of charitable giving encourage and enable, or even mandate, future self-reliance (education, tools, transportation, proper work clothes) rather than foster dependency. Teach a man to fish etc. Anyway, you already know all this, so keep your fingers crossed and stay firm. If it doesn’t work out, maybe it’s time to cut ties or suspend assistance until convinced of improved skills and attitude. Your intent is admirable. But yes, the pit is bottomless, especially in the Philippines.

Independence Day actually used to be celebrated on July 4, the date on which the Philippines actually became an independent nation in 1946. But then President Macapagal unilaterally declared by proclamation in 1962 that the date would be changed to reflect the date upon which former self-proclaimed president and dictator Aguinaldo had declared aspirational independence from Spain, Macapagal being upset about unrelated matters (read: pera) and feeling a need to publicly stick it to the kanos and salve his wounded ego…

That badly proportioned and weirdly colored sailor statue looks plain silly, even by dubious Philippine standards.
Pretty ironic since the other one, with the series of handprints along the base, is supposed to symbolize “the hands that freed the nation,” i.e. the petulant senators who foolishly voted to evict the US from Subic Bay after overplaying their hand at extortion drenched in adolescent quasi-nationalist rhetoric, and with no real plan in place for converting the base to effective civilian use or addressing contaminants left behind, much less providing for the nation’s defense as China became increasingly bellicose and belligerent.
Oh well, if we keep smiling and congratulating ourselves, no one will think to question the truth of the matter….

But rather than stomp off, perhaps it would have been better to assert: “I believe you already owe me 500 pesos. If you had asked me for a loan at that time, I would have been glad to help. Now, I don’t want anything to do with you, but I want my money back. When are you going to pay me?”
I would also spread it around to cohorts. She should be the one made to feel uncomfortable, not you. Nothing like the specter of an enforced debt to keep an erstwhile “friend” away. Just a suggestion.
In my humble opinion, the lack of accountability and its impact on cultural norms is one of the things that ruins the Philippines. Rather than invest minimal effort in genuine lasting friendships that could be mutually beneficial for years, too many people would rather just rip you off for a quick 500 pesos and act like nothing happened — or even that they’re the victim because someone dared to call them out and make them lose face.
