On the beach in Bali

Great coverage, John. Great pics.

Now for the real question…. not withstanding the presence of Ji Yeon and all….. but what’s your assessment of the Balinese/Indonesian women?

The Indonesian women I have known have been second to none, and your friend Yuli looks like a really good example. But then, my taste runs along that way….

If you’re at liberty to opine, please do.

Really excellent pix, John.
Did you catch that bat yourself?
Did you have him for dinner, heaven forbid?

Cheers….and enjoy… looks like a great place and a great time.

Fire Dance

Thanks, Frank.
Yes, I see the photo’s in the above post perfectly, (though I can’t tell what’s going on in them), but for some unknown reason many of the photos in some of John’s entries, even within the same post, won’t open and are X’d out in the upper left corner. Sometimes when this happens in other places on the internet, if I right click the red X and select ‘show picture’, from the drop down menu they open but not on this blog – they won’t open here.

I tend to believe it may be the source, for example, John may be copy/pasting them from different sources, perhaps, and they have a different file extension, maybe – perhaps one my computer is not set to handle (I’m using Vista). Other bloggers have commented on this too – so I don’t know if it’s something John could do to alter the file extension when he posts the photo, such as change the file extension to one that is very common to windows from whatever it may have been, or if the problem lies in the viewer’s PC, in this case mine. There are programs easily available where imagery/photo file extensions can be easily changed – I’ve seen them numerous times on the net.

Of course it would be great to see the older photo’s too, the ones you refer to that he needs to fix.

Happy Birthday USA!

Thanks, John, I think.

Wish the hell I knew the secret of how to reliably open your photos.
Some of the times they open and many of the times they don’t.

I had recently been reviewing some of your older blog posts from 2006, the time when your son Nolan was visiting you , that era, and so far I haven’t been able to open any of those pics. Must be a way to do it but I’m damned if I know it.

Just wonderin, is there a secret to opening them that you can lemme know? Based on your captions, some of them seemed that they would be worth seeing, surely.

Anyway, enjoying your Bali trip so far. Hang in there.

The best defense is a good offense

Good post and very good run-down and list of NK broken promises and transgressions…… hard to believe but true, nonetheless. Thanks for the post.

But I know Sting plays bass…….. I thought I remembered McCartney only because my brother had a fairly good band back in the day and thought he was something like McCartney’s all… so… I’m just sayin…….

» Posted By dentoku On 28/June/2009 @ 8:41 am

Bass player front-men….. Paul McCartney….you sure…….he played left-handed rhythm, didn’t he…….???

Oldboy

Damn, John – two freakin posts in one day…..???? what’s come over you???

I will definitely avoid Flightplan, though am not enamored with Jodie Foster in any case – surely not as much as she seems to be with herself, anyway.

The Korean movies/trilogy/whatever – they sound interesting, but haven’t before heard of them. I’ll look out for them on “Asia Extreme”, the Sundance channel, Sunday night series. I was over in Clearwater and missed it this last Sunday – thought the recorder was set but it wasn’t. Damn ! It’s one of my favorite weekly offerings.

Thanks for the coverage

Can you give me a blowjob please?

I can tell you, John, I don’t doubt that the 7-incher ad is making the rounds here in the States but it hasn’t made it to here yet, SE Florida or Tampa area. Go figure on that too, cause BK HQ is in Miami.

In any case, it’s a fun post. And thanks for the tutorial on the BJ shot. I, too, find myself in a dilemma when the bell rings or shots are ordered. Used to go to a bar in Texas where on a given evening the bar crowd would order shots for the bar half a dozen times a night, seemed, so I tried to avoid my belly on the bar if I could, mostly, to avoid the issue. They always ordered a pretty good 151 proof rum and the one time I got caught and drank the shot I was actually amazed at how smooth it was. But not enough to make me begin the slow broil of my liver by drinking it regularly, in any case.

I’m a beer guy too and I’m willing to bet, ironically, that you probably have a better selection of beer in Itaewon then we have here, despite the (thankfully) plethora of micro-brews now available most everywhere. I was in the MacDill Class 6, a couple weeks ago and noted that the prices were not all that friendly. They had many many beers, though, to include a good selection of Asian beers including the Thai Singha, several Japanese brands, lots of Mexican beers and I was surprised to see San Miguel, from the Phil. I browsed a bit for Korean beer but didn’t see any, though I’m pretty sure it was probably poked away somewhere. But at 8-9 bucks a six-pack for probably most of the imports, the San Miguel stayed on the shelf, even though.

Long ago in Thailand we sometimes used to have to drink Singha because in lots of places that’s all they served. But their domestic product was lots stronger then the export so we used to remark that it was the only beer we ever drank that gave you a hangover while you were still drinking it.

I really miss the tall bottles of OB in Korea. That’s a good size, STM, maybe a half-liter?

Hang in there and enjoy yourself.

Hey, John. Couple questions. You’ve probably addressed this before and maybe I missed it, but wondering about your calendar in the upper right corner – where you run it from Monday through Sunday, versus the traditional Sunday through Saturday? Kind of unusual and am wondering – what’s up with that?

Also, I asked you about an ‘comments edit’ function a couplea times (not meaning to belabor the subject) and you replied that you are not that computer savvy, which I understand completely. But I note that you have the emoticons (faces) and somehow had to set that up, so am wondering if it’s not an admin plug in? In addition, lots of blogs allow selection of font, text size, boldness, italics, etc, which would be really excellent……..not so much the font etc, but the boldness, italics, etc would be really good to add meaning to the posts…….

Anyway, just hoping that since you were able to go in and make the excellent appearance changes that you recently made that you might look at it again, if ever a chance presents. Wouldn’t seem to be much harder that those changes were, but then, I’m probably not that informed on it anyway and anyway, you may not be interested……in which case I understand, yet again.

Thanks and regards,

» Posted By dentoku On 26/June/2009 @ 1:11 am

Sorry John. I thought it might be a plug and play kinda thing.

Regards,

» Posted By Dentoku On 21/June/2009 @ 11:50 am

Very nice, John. Now how about the ‘edit’ function?

» Posted By Dentoku On 21/June/2009 @ 6:58 am

What’s in a name?

Correction: Boyd, above should be Dodd, sorry.

Comment: John, have you ever considered integration of an comment edit fuction, for your bloggers. As it is, seems you solely have that capability. Not telling you how to run your business, just wondering/commenting.

In reference to the Barbie Boxer, ‘just call me Senator incident’, John McCain was a brief guest on Hannity last night on Fox news. When he was introduced he thanked Sean Hannity for calling him Senator and not calling him “Sir”. I fell out, as did the camera crew on the set. McCain has a great sense of humor.

Someone otta whip the asses of Boxer, Biden, his wife, Pelosi, Schumer, Reid and Boyd, among others.

I volunteer.

And I’ll throw in H. Clinton and Barney Frank for free.

Boxer summed up her entire character and her entire worth in that one brief comment to the General, IMV.

For Tolkien fans

Great post, John.
Nothing like youthful adventure. I did a similar thing at 18, went to California from central Illinois for about six months.

I don’t know who wouldn’t like Tolkien, though. Did you know that he, C. S. Lewis and four or five other’s, when in university had a book reading/discussion group that met weekly in various Pub’s to debate/discuss their differing and emerging views – word is the brew enlivened the exchanges quite a bit. You know C.S. Lewis, right? The group was called, ‘The Inkling’s’.

But don’t get me started.

There is more to life than darts

Spanish is not spoken – the Spanish ended their colonization long ago, long ago enough that the language largely died out when replaced by the dominance of English. English and Tagalog are taught from the first day of school till graduation and have been for decades. Tagalog is the dialect natively spoken in the Manila metropolitian area which is considered a province. One of the past presidents, Magsaysay, I believe, directed that all Filipino’s would be taught Tagalog, the language of the Capital, from grade school onward so that all Filipino’s would have a common language. It was a good move. Plus non Metro Manila residents speak their own province dialect, which makes the vast majority of Filipino’s speakers of at least three languages right out of the nest.

There is a province of Zamboanga (deep south west, an archipelago) where the dialect is almost Spanish but not quite. Spanish speaking tourists are amazed.

Just more trivia. Excuse the belaboring.

Yeah, nothing much, other than stuff like………..say…

– 90%+ family names of Hispanic derivation…
– like you partially noted, a Catholic church on every corner…
– family structures and values totally reminiscent of a Catholic patriarchal social structure.
– highly valued ‘virginity’ among women, ironically squandered by the men who abandon their pregnant girlfriends in fulsome numbers.
– nearly every female and male name ends in an a or an o….
– the density of Spanish words imbedded in the Tagalog language and most other dialects too.
– indeed, the structure of the language, itself
– the horse-drawn carriage – the ‘Calesa’ – note the ‘a’ ending, still in great evidence on the streets.
– garishly colored busses and jeepney’s which ply the streets continually…(looks like Mexico or rural Puerto Rico, actually)
– the shape of many (most) young girls legs which are generally identical to those of Hispanics, mid-thigh down….
——-and on and on ………

No worries. Near as I can remember you seem to have gotten ill while you were there…….

But in any case, the Americans and many other cultures seem to have done even more damage in a far shorter period of time than the Spanish did in their 300 year colonization….

» Posted By dentoku On 17/June/2009 @ 10:50 pm

Hey, John,
If you run in to your Filipino partner again be sure to let him know that you didn’t see much evidence of Spanish influence in the Phil during your visit there a while back.:lol::oops:

Had a Ball!

Good coverage of the event, John. I have to say, in retrospect, that attending many such events over the course of my career has given me some very pleasant memories of some really impressive occasions. Invariably they are done well and if you can manage to be seated with some familiar faces, even more enjoyable.

Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for your repory – and great looking tux. Nice companion, too, but maybe a llittle stiff for my tastes.

Death will not be denied

The movie mentioned by Jenn reminds me of a movie making the rounds of the cable movie channels these days, called “Shutter”. About an American photog and his fiancé in Japan who are plagued by the spirit of a young Japanese woman who had been in love with the guy. I originally saw it on “Asia Extreme, which airs Sunday nites at midnight. The dead Japanese girl causes the death of a couple of the guys friends and tracks the couple from Japan back to NYC where, as it turns out, she is able to communicate the reason for her wrath to the fiancé (girl) who realizes it is all because of heinous mistreatment by the guy and his friends against the girl. Interesting ending too.

Might be worth watching, John, if you get the chance.

Regards to all.
