Time marches on

And so do I. I completed my 67th journey around the sun today. My plan is to make that trip a few more times before I give it a rest. Wish me luck!

I’m happy to report I’m having a pain-free birthday. Even got off my lazy ass and walked almost 10K today. I’ve still got my evening bar crawl steps to add in, so I’m back on track in that regard.

Everything went fine at the SOB. I’ll share photos once the sponsor posts them. This week the top three were Wet Spot, Alaska, and Hot Zone. At least, as far as I recall. I made it a beer night again to make sure I maintained the proper amount of control. And balance. It must have worked.

UPDATE: Here are some photos:

Hot Zone took 3rd place.
Alaska took 2nd.
Alaska always puts on a good show.
This week’s champions: Wet Spot. A spectacular show, maybe the best performance I’ve seen at an SOB.
Wet Spot was on fire!
Green Room didn’t make the top three this week, but this gal caught my eye and triggered my imagination.

Marissa has moved back to Barretto from Manila, and I invited her to see the show. Seemed a little bit like old times. Turns out she knows the manager from Green Room, and he’s wanting to hire a couple of waitresses. Looks like she’s found a job, and that made me glad I extended the invitation.

Otherwise, everything is what it always is around here. I’m planning to treat myself to a steak dinner at John’s place to start my evening, then hit a few of my favorite bars. I heard from one of the gals at Snatchbar that they have a cake for me, so I’ll need to make that one of my stops tonight.

I’ve been surprised by all the birthday greetings and messages popping up from my Facebook friends, almost 100 so far. I guess I’m not as alone as I sometimes feel. Now, if I could just find a worthy girlfriend. Luckily, I’m still young (at heart) and gwapo. I just need to give it some time.

So the years spin by and now the boy is twenty sixty-seven
Though his dreams have lost some grandeur coming true
There'll be new dreams maybe better dreams and plenty
Before the last revolving year is through

And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return we can only look
Behind from where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

  1. Well! With Marissa back in town, I guess we’ll see whether you’ve learned any lessons! As for Marissa’s reappearance, maybe Barretto is the kind of place that keeps pulling you back in. That’s true here in Korea. I’ve seen plenty of expats go “Fuck this place,” leave for supposedly greener pastures… then come slinking back. Because that’s the gravitational power of South Korea.

I’m glad, at least, that someone made a cake for you, given how many brownies and muffins and vats of chili you make for others.

Enjoy the hell out of that steak. You can’t lose when you visit John’s place. I’m still fascinated by that menu of his, which you displayed a while back. I’d spend days or even weeks working my way through that.

Happy Birthday! Onward to 70! Charge!

(Oh, yeah: my French Papa, who’s around 90 now, told me in 2018 that he felt pretty good until he hit 70, and that’s when things started really slowing down for him. So that’s the standard you have to beat. You gonna be the same incorrigibly randy, priapic old skirt-chaser by the time you’re 80?)

  2. I consider Marissa to be a friend, and I hope she finds her path to happiness. I don’t blame her for wanting out of a hellhole like Manila–one of the worst cities I’ve seen.

Yes, it was sweet of the Snackbar crew to want to celebrate with me. I’ll post some pics from the gathering on the blog today.

I wound up having to postpone my steak dinner until today, but I’m looking forward to it. I’ll tell John he has a big fan in Korea!

I want to live as long as I am relatively healthy and able to do the things I enjoy. Some of my hike buddies are in their 70s, so there’s hope. My dad made it to 83 and was a smoker and a drinker until the end. Maybe I’ve got good genes (and a strong liver!) from him.

I reckon I’ll chase skirts as long as I have the money in my pocket to be attractive.

  3. Happy Birthday John. Stay healthy and safe. Btw I moved off the mountain. To much house, not enough energy.
