Hiking to the C.

C = Castillejos.

The Wednesday Walkers loaded up in a jeepney and traveled to the far side of Subic, starting our hike in the Philseco area. We then marched through the backroads, fields, hills, and dales, making our way to the Babaytay section of Castillejos. A hot day, but a pleasant change of scenery and an enjoyable 8+ kilometer hike.

That’s where a former Hasher I had the hots for in 2018 lives. She chose someone else over me. And this is how that’s working out for her. I feel sad for her but not pity.
And she did get (another) kid out of the deal, something I could never give her.

A good day on trail.

When beer o’clock came around, I headed out to Hideaway for the Wednesday feeding. Last night’s menu was pizza, pork liempo, fried chicken, rice, and freshly baked brownies. The food was gone in a flash, so no pictures.

Well, except for this one of Joy’s satisfied face

I was in one of “those” moods last night and decided to take my melancholy attitude elsewhere. Walking down the highway, it struck me as appropriate to show my respect to Bob by lifting a bottle to his memory.

In retrospect, probably not a good idea. That’s the “boss’s table” where he always sat. It just won’t ever be the same without him.

Anyway, I had one beer and left. Too soon for me now, but I imagine there will be a wake or other sendoff for him soon that I will attend.

I parked my ass at Sloppy Joe’s next, and the place was rockin’. Chris was in charge of the music and playing tunes that helped us old fuckers recall the happy days of our youth. When the people I knew left, I went next door to Alaska to say hi to Virginia.

I was very disappointed to receive the silent treatment from her, despite paying for two lady drinks. Honestly, it was so bad I resolved never to buy her another one. I finished my beer and left.

To her credit, Virginia did message me this morning to apologize, saying she had a headache last night. Well, she could have told me that then and maybe I’d been a tad more understanding. She’s lost her status as my favorite in Alaska now, and IF I go back there in the future, I’ll pick someone else to drink with.

Not a great way to end the night, but it’s a brand new day today, and I won’t let yesterday intrude on my pursuit of a good time today. And yes, I know I owe you a report on my date this week. I’m still working through my thoughts on that event, but perhaps I’ll have something to share tomorrow.

  1. They are building a bypass road that will provide a shortcut to the shipyard in Cawag.

I’d be really tempted to wander up that road.

Gorgeous pics of the walk. You could put up a house in almost any of those spots you photographed and enjoy a lifetime of beautiful views.

Honestly, I never found Virginia all that good looking. Didn’t want to say anything at first, but now that she’s fallen in your estimation, I feel safe giving you my opinion.

With a surname like Kuel/Kuehl, Bob sounds more as if he had German roots than Irish, so I have to wonder whether he’ll get a German-style wake (whatever that might entail) or an Irish wake.

  2. I agree with Kevin about Virginia. Mary looks nice for a 12 year old.

RIP Bob. a fellow biker. probably got distracted, shot happens. I quit riding in 2015 after 50 years. with no accidents and only a few injuries. I am risk averse but shit happens. Lost a friend, a very experience biker when she went of the apex going over the mountains on 56 near Yang-Yang.

I am sitting on the dock of the bay wasting time in Tongyeon SK, about as far from Seoul as you can get in SK. Very beautiful in the South. Been here a week, back to US in 2 weeks.

We have an apartment in a high rise in Anjeong-Ri just outside of Camp Humphres. We use it 7/8months a year and let friends use it while not there.

Yeah, she betalked me into flying. Much unfounded anxiety being paraplegic. worked out well. Wife is terrific care giver.
    be safe

  3. Good to hear things are going well for you lately, Jerry. I’m not sure I’ve ever been to Tongyeon, but it sounds nice. And I had no idea you were spending so much time in Anjeong-ri. Glad you are able to get out and about and have a change of scenery now and then.

Yeah, attraction is a funny thing. Not sure what about Virginia caught my eye, but now that I’ve seen some of her personality traits, the attraction is diminished completely. Eighteen-year-old Mary isn’t really my type either, but she is nice and smart, and that’s what I see when I look at her. And so it goes.

  4. Sometimes I think about what it would be like to live in the wilderness surrounded by nature’s beauty. And then I think, “How would I get home from the bar at night?” Still, if I were to change my lifestyle someday and had a special woman to care for me, I think I could be happy (assuming I had internet). In one of my previous lives (with wife #3), our plan was to retire in a cabin in the mountains of North Carolina.

Yeah, I’m seeing Virginia differently now, too. I honestly think part of the problem is that she is not comfortable conversing in English. Still, her job is to pretend to like the guy buying the drinks, and she really sucks at that.

I honestly don’t know much about Bob’s (Kuehl) background. He was a Navy vet and struck me as the All-American type. I suspect the wake and funeral will be Filipino-style.

  5. I would never ask you to take pictures at a wake or funeral or memorial service, so if you attend some event for Bob, I’ll rely on your descriptive powers to convey the experience.

  6. I don’t spend much time in Anjeon-ri
My wife and her sister traveled to Korea twice last year. Other friends got on board. PT became base of operations.
I and my old fart friends gather and tell war stories.
Korea is very beautiful, but Tonyeong is a hidden gem untouched by US bs.
