I wrote about the Valentine’s Hash yesterday. Tomorrow I’ll be writing about today’s Subic Red Dress Hash. So, I guess that makes this post a Hash sandwich. Not a lot of meat, but better than nothing. Let’s get to it, then.
Filling in some gaps from my time with the La Union Hash in the mountains near Baguio with photos I didn’t take:

After the Hash Run, we had a shooting contest:

Another Hash event, another Hash shirt to wear:

We got back home to Barretto around noon on Sunday, tired from a difficult night’s sleep in the kubo room. Took a nap, but still wasn’t feeling up to speed when beer o’clock arrived. We decided to pass on our Sunday visit to the Arizona floating bar and went for dinner at Jewel Cafe instead.
Jewel had updated their menu since our last visit, and that tiny little filet mignon steak I usually enjoy has gone up from 599 pesos to 690 pesos. Hmm, nope, there’s not enough meat for that money.

We popped into Red Bar for a couple of drinks, then visited Jumpin’ Jacks for our nightcap. Then it was back home for a quiet night’s sleep.
Swan had a breakfast surprise for me this morning:

Are any of you old enough to remember Rod Serling and The Twilight Zone?

Continuing on with the July 2017 LTG archives, I’m halfway through a visit to Subic Bay with my travel companion/caregiver, Loraine. And then my step-daughter, Avery, and her partner, who were touring Asia, decided to come join in the fun. It was a pleasant surprise to see Avery again. She’s the only one of my kids who visited me since I left the USA. She’s ghosted me since then.
Today’s YouTube video is about monitoring your resting heart rate. That’s one of the daily stats I track. I used to be consistently in the mid-50s, but it has been creeping up to the low-60s lately. I sounds like as long as I stay under 70, I should be okay.
Have you been missing these?

And on that note, we’ll give this post a rest. I’ve never participated in a Red Dress Hash Run before, but there is a first time for everything, I suppose. Basically, everyone wears a red outfit and does a bar crawl. I’m not exactly looking forward to it, but I’ll try to make it through. Details and photos tomorrow.
It’s too bad that inflation has claimed another victim re: your filet mignon. Ask Swan to bring some beef tenderloin home, then learn how to cook it. Best method is sous vide, but if you don’t have a sous-vide device, you can gently cook it in an oven, then sear the outside for that much-desired crust. Douse with butter, garlic, and herbs. One method is shown here. There are many others. I think you might end up making a bigger, better, higher-quality steak at home than at any restaurant. Never overcook the filet unless you like eating hockey pucks.
Good luck with the “red dress” Hash. At least it’s not this.
Beef prices, among other things, are sky high in the US also. Inflation is insidious a nd for expats on a non-COLA based pension, it could eventually be a problem if they have no backstop.
Perused exchange rates, and it appears that the PI peso is getting slightly stronger, but I would think still a ways to go before any concern for US based expats. UK pound seems to be tracking the same way. Though I am sure a 20% drop vs. the USD coupled with inflation would be a concern for some.
Not sure if you were being facetious regarding not looking forward to the hash/bar crawl. Seems like that would be right up your alley. LOL
Brian, yes, I’ve seen prices going up across the board, but especially on imported products. The peso exchange rate has been great lately (currently around 58 pesos to the dollar), and anything above 50 is fine by me. My pension does get an annual COLA, so I should be good unless the US goes bankrupt and stops paying me.
The only problem with the Hash bar crawl scene is having 40 or 50 people trying to order a beer at the same time. It worked out better than I thought it would yesterday, and I wound up having a good time. From what I remember, anyway.
Kevin, Swan’s home-cooked steaks are plenty good. I’ll share the recipe you linked with her; she likes a challenge.
Um, yeah, the red dresses at the Hash were a lot like those pics in your link. You’ll see in my post today.
