Vial Lyn

the vial in the title was a reference to the small doses of being with Lyn I experienced

Ah. Got it now. Yeah, that needed explaining.

I didn’t push it this weekend, but I’m not sure I’d enjoy resisting those urges over the long haul. I mean, if we continue to meet once a year, no big deal. But monthly sexless rendezvous is probably outside the scope of my ability to enjoy.

It doesn’t always have to be about sex. Try the friend thing. You might be surprised. If you hate being known as a player, here’s your chance to avoid being one.

» Posted By Kevin Kim On 15/May/2023 @ 7:38 am

I think Brian’s on to something. Lyn just wanted to hang, and she thinks you’re cool enough to just chill with. I’d take that as a plus. No monetary bullshit, nothing transactional—just hangin’.

It’s the age-old question, though: can a man and woman just be friends, or does friendship inevitably turn into something else over time? For some people, especially the sex-addicted, there’s always the expectation of sex lurking somewhere in the relationship’s subtext. This is aided (or exacerbated) by the fact that we guys are generally wired to think about only one thing all day long, so this subtext isn’t unnatural: it’s why the friends-or-not question exists to begin with. But plenty of guys who aren’t as obsessed with the question will affirm that it is possible to have female friends who are just friends. (Full disclosure, I have only one very distant female friend who lives in England! And yes, she’s spoken for. And she’s not a very close friend, but we banter sometimes.)

Anyway, back to Brian’s point, I’d say that her non-acceptance of money shows both her independence and maybe also her boundaries, but positively, it definitely shows that she sees you as cool enough, and perhaps safe enough, to hang with. A woman like that could be a font of information if you find yourself pursuing someone else and needing feminine wisdom (but I’m not suggesting you merely use her!). Trying to take this friendship in a physical direction would probably just ruin it.

Maybe she’s like you in that all she wants is “companionship,” the difference being that she has a clearer idea of what “companionship” means.

So what does the “vial” in “Vial Lyn” mean, aside from being a way to avoid writing “vile”? If you’re going for a pun on “violin,” well, the pun has to at least mean something to be a pun, yeah? Otherwise, it’s just fun with phonetics.

Days that end in “y”

It’s a bit like having a distinctly different pair of socks for every day of the week. Cock socks, so to speak. Good luck with Lyn.

Taking the fifth…

And the view of my dinner, a roast chicken salad. Joy had the grilled pork chops.

Did you and Joy switch bodies? That cheese is looking mighty weird on top. They should’ve used some crumbled feta or parm. And the vegetables are way too chunky for a salad. YouTuber/cook Ethan Chlebowski has talked about how such salads just make him mad because they indicate how little thought and effort were put into making them.

Continued good luck re: medical issues. Here’s hoping you get some clear insights from your doctors.

I guess that’s what a traffic jam looks like in a one-horse town. I saw something similar in Taos, New Mexico.

Give me five!

Forgot to wish you a Happy Fifth Philiversary.

Maligayang Ikalimang Anibersaryo!

(“Happy Fifth Anniversary” according to Google Translate, which doesn’t have Tagalog but does have “Filipino.”)

And these cookie recipients

She looks a little old for cookies.

Happy Filipinas! Be careful!

I assume this is sarcasm given their grim expressions.

Leaving the dead behind

I’m a sucker for long stretches of road or path leading into the unknown. That’s a nice shot.

re: Aine

Sorry to hear that that’s how things are going with her. She’s the best-looking woman of all the women you know, as far as I’m concerned. But I recall reading about her previous rudeness, and she seems to have doubled down on that. Good-looking women who turn out to have not-so-good-looking personalities end up looking ugly to me once I find out who they really are. I imagine you’ll do what you can to regain some semblance of a civil relationship with her, but that’s about it. With some people, that’s the best you can do.

Good luck with the doctor’s visit. Give us the news about your nerves.

Twosday

About that grammatical goof:

To me, that would just feel hollow and insubstantial, not to mention a waste of time.

The error here is one of parallelism. Normally, if you’re making a list, the items in the list need to be grammatically similar in structure and function.

Starting with the word “feel,” then, I list two adjectives: “hollow” and “insubstantial.” The third list item after “not to mention” should also be an adjective, but instead, I wrote a noun phrase: “a waste of time.” So that broke the pattern.

that would just feel
• hollow (adj.)
• insubstantial (adj.)
• a waste of time (noun phrase)

Had I been thinking more clearly, I should have written

To me, that would just feel hollow, insubstantial, and wasteful of my time.

Or, better—

To me, that would just feel like a hollow, insubstantial waste of time.

Grammatically, this changes the list to a noun phrase with coordinate adjectives in front of it (hollow, insubstantial), thus avoiding the whole list/parallelism problem.

I wrote:

Oops. Do you see my grammatical goof (not a comma this time: it’s something much bigger)? Here’s another chance to point and laugh like Nelson.

I honestly don’t know what has gotten into me lately, but I just have zero interest in transactional sex.

I’d say that’s a good sign.

but maybe I should consider hiring someone to be my companion. At least part-time. And yes, that’s inconsistent with my stated desire not to pay for it, but assuming I hired someone talented at pretending, it might work. We’ll see; I haven’t decided yet.

I really don’t get the “I enjoy fooling myself” thing. To me, that would just feel hollow and insubstantial, not to mention a waste of time. This is why I made that “Captain Pike” joke so long ago: in the 1960s “Star Trek” series, Christopher Pike was so badly injured that he was unable to walk or talk. On a certain planet, alien beings capable of generating illusions allowed Pike to feel as if he were a young, healthy man capable of running around and having adventures. The whole thing was a sham, of course, but Pike was content to participate in the illusion/delusion. Very sad.

American Veteran’s Cemetary

Oh, noes! That’s close to the Stephen King spelling of “cemetery”: Sematary.

I informed her that a foodie like John would never MAKE a sandwich with anything other than real cheese.

For what it’s worth, the classic cheesesteak is made unapologetically with Cheez Whiz. The only other tolerated alternative is provolone. That’s it.

The most unique tip jar I think I’ve ever seen is at Queen Vic.

Interesting that “cunt” is above “asshole.” I’d switch those.

Good luck with your examination!

Just a little flattery

I guess FRA is “Fleet Reserve Association”? I had to blow up one of your photos to see what it stood for. I would have said “Fried Rubbery Assholes.” Yum.

Marching along

That’s a gorgeous shot that really emphasizes the big sky. Nice.

It’s nice on ice!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before: three(?) smaller blocks of ice instead of one big block. Go figure.

Looks to have been a great walk with plenty of convivialité at the end. What percentage of the Hashers ended up taking the shorter route? And how do you know who took which route (aside from relative start/finish times)?

Dinner and dancing and a girl on the floor

Wow, what an adventure! Good thing you and your inhaler were around!

Food looks good.

May marking the Hash be less stressful.

A phoney excursion

Samsung Galaxy “S” series is the flagship; the “A” series is the midrange. All explained here.

re: different from, different than

Just remember what a clause is, and use “different than” in front of it.

» Posted By Kevin Kim On 08/May/2023 @ 6:37 am

Before any heads explode, I misspelled “phony” in the title on purpose.

Yeah, I guessed as much. Part of my job as a member of the linguistic bomb squad is figuring out intent. Deliberate misspellings should be left alone. It is, admittedly, sometimes hard to tell whether something is a joke spelling or not.

Yeah, I know; how is that different than every other night of the week?

different from (or different to if you’re British)

Use different than in front of a clause:

The results were different than I expected.

my phone was fucked up

You seem to go through a lot of phones. And they don’t sell the Samsung “S” series where you are?

Good luck Haring that trail!

Ruffles have ridges

Gorgeous views. I’d probably prefer an ascent that’s less steep, too.

The burrito comes with corn chips! I like your carbs-with-carbs style!

I love that sort of view myself, but wouldn’t you be too far away from your beloved bars?

Cinco de Mayo

With brownies and Orea cookies for dessert.

It’s the return of the Orea cookies!

re: Gracyn-Mary comparison

At a guess, Gracyn isn’t nearly as worldly as Mary. And thank God for that.

Please keep us in the loop about your blood tests and ultrasound. I’ll be curious to hear what the docs find.

Happy Cinco de Mayo.

Floating my blues away

An unintentional work of art.

Bamboo, at a guess…? Very artistic, indeed. And it’s fascinating to see how different those interior diameters are.

And caught a glimpse of the almost full moon.

Nice pic! That bright “star” off to the left might be Jupiter. When in doubt, it’s almost always either Jupiter or Venus. I’d know better if I knew anything about navigating via the stars.

And I don’t remember Franklin saying that either.

These days, you can’t trust any quote you see on the internet.
—Booker T. Washington

No problems at all on my 7K walk this morning, either. I hope the knee problem is behind me for good.

Did I miss something, here? Did you go in for a followup visit with your docs? I mean, if you feel good, then you feel good, but it’d be nice to get a reading on what might have been the cause of all this.

Two gloves are better than one, and some poor fella has none now.

That’s a red-letter day, finding gloves in pairs. I’ve found pairs before, too, but normally, I just find singletons.

A good day, a good walk. Some measure of contentment, I hope.

The good, the bad, and the ugly

I second Brian’s suggestion. Good plan.

» Posted By Kevin Kim On 04/May/2023 @ 5:43 pm

She only seems interested in what I can do for her and offers me nothing in return. Granted, I don’t ask for anything either–I don’t want my support for her studies to be on a quid pro quo basis, but it does seem telling that she shows me almost zero affection. That’s fine; it’s just good to know.

I do seem to recall suggesting that she’s precocious and playing you. Someone who’s been around the block at that young age should always be approached with caution. But I know of your predilection for the low-quality girls.

I certainly wasn’t going to pay to be subjected to their bad attitudes.

As the litany goes, if you want a lady of substance, you’re going to have to look outside of your normal circles. I keep waiting for this to sink in.

I couldn’t resist letting Jenn know how disappointed I was in her behavior as I left.

I’m morbidly curious to know how she reacted.

Sounds like a “meh” day all in all. Sorry to hear it. At the same time, this is the life you’ve built around yourself, so you know this sort of shit is bound to happen. And realistically speaking, a shit-free life is impossible: even a high-quality woman is going to be a pain in the ass sometimes, just as you’ll be a pain to her on occasion. So it’s not a question of improving your relative levels of joy and stress; it’s more a question of living a life of greater or lesser substance—something that leads to a truly fundamental contentment. What could you be doing with your life that would give you a deep sense of fulfillment? Something done in service to others? Acquiring new skills? Traveling around the PI and learning about what makes certain regions different from other regions? You’ve got a whole country to play with, so the sky’s the limit.

After you finish watching all six(?) seasons of “Lucifer,” of course.

Turkey trot

Fireman explains the difference between an Eagle and Turkey

How did the guy end up with such a neutral, harmless Hash name?

Interesting trivia: a fireman is a “pompier” in French, and faire un pompier is one way to say “to give a blowjob.”

Looks to have been a good, if modest, walk. Aside from the problems at the beginning, how was the knee for the rest of the walk?

An early departure

I’m glad Bob’s getting a good sendoff despite the hot day. He obviously meant a lot to the community.

Spicy dawg looks good despite the damn onions.

Good luck with the walk and the knee!

Saying goodbye

RIP, Alan.

And some of the best bar signage I’ve seen

But what’s the error on the sign? (no peeking at Grammarly) Hint: don’t worry about the lack of a period at the end. I chalk that up to “signage style.”

The Kokomos floating bar

You can swim to the bar if you want, right?

Watching the sun go down

Beautiful shot.

re: Bob’s wake

This is going to sound horrible, but I suddenly remember that series of riddles:

What do you call a man with no arms and no legs hanging on your wall?
Art.

What do you call the same man if he’s in your mailbox?
Bill.

If he’s on your floor?
Matt.

If he’s floating in your pool?
Bob.

I’d like to think Bob himself would appreciate the humor. RIP, Bob.

Whatchamacallit

YouTube vids from searching “knee numbness and weakness”

» Posted By Kevin Kim On 29/April/2023 @ 4:40 pm

I finally gave up and settled on “Whatchamacallit.” It turns out there is a proper spelling for that word which I had to look up—just another day in the life of a blogger.

Just look up the candy bar.

I had the pancake platter.

That looks as stingy as a McDonald’s breakfast platter! I’d have to order two.

Except, my knee issue flared up again, and this time it was worse than ever. Still no pain, but it was numb, and I was limping. I also felt like I was going to keel over from a collapsed knee at any moment.

I’m no doctor, but numbness sounds as if your own docs are right, and this is definitely neurological, which doesn’t automatically mean it’s brain-related—it could just be peripheral nerves. The intermittency probably can’t be explained by a chronic condition, which makes me wonder whether you’re dealing with, I don’t know, a barely pinched nerve. I’ve had that sort of problem before, although in my case, a pinched nerve is always painful. My point, though, is that, as you walk, the spaces between some of your bones can expand and contract, resulting in less pinching or more pinching.

If I knew anything about anatomy, I’d be able to tell you which nerves connect your spine and your knee; a bit of research (done just now) says that sciatic and femoral nerves are your best bets. Look on YouTube for therapy videos that deal with relieving/controlling knee numbness related to these nerves. I suggest that because I’ve been looking at a ton of physical-therapy videos for a host of my own problems, especially lower-back pain and “neck hump.”

All I can think to do about that is to keep on living until I’m not around to care anymore.

Just a few posts ago, weren’t you saying that you’re “not all that morbidly inclined”? For a not-so-morbid guy, you do like to hint frequently at your mortality. I thought that was my department, what with my MA in religious studies!

Anyway, continue to take care of yourself, keep doing the things that give you a feeling of deep meaning, live a full life, and be happy.

My night on the town

It’s a little over 500 steps to go from B1 to 26. Doing the staircase twice is almost equal to going once up the Namsan steps.

I sprang for a pizza from Shamboli’s

Is Shamboli’s shambolic?

Facebook memories reminded me of that time five years ago when I kicked Kevin Kim’s ass.

Rub it in. Next time you’re in Seoul, I’ll invite you to walk up my apartment building’s staircase, from B1 to the 26th floor, twice.

Do you remember the “plethora” joke from “The Three Amigos”?

Going my way

The route we walked

What’s up with that red squiggle at the end of the trail? Did people just walk around aimlessly for a while or something?

Pork lumpia and fried chicken

Inside the purple bowl, are those bags of some kind of sauce?

Nice walk, good food… what more can you ask for?

Stung by a B in the ass

I’ll be curious to find out what sort of neurological problem comes and goes like that. After my stroke, I began to associate buckling knees with brain issues, but as I said earlier, with a stroke, you’re talking about a persistent condition—chronic, not acute.

Sorry to hear about Alan. I assume that’s Christine beside him in the pic.

We all tumble over the edge of life’s conveyor belt eventually. We just don’t know where on the conveyor belt we are.

An encounter with Lucifer

I’ve never watched “Lucifer,” but I’ve seen a few interesting clips of it on YouTube.

» Posted By Kevin Kim On 26/April/2023 @ 12:10 pm

Oh, yeah: I’ve heard really good things about “Lucifer.” And I’m a big fan of Dennis Haysbert, who plays God in the series. I loved Haysbert back when he played President David Palmer on “24.” (Poor Palmer gets assassinated at the beginning of Season 5, I think. Sniper bullet to the throat.)
