Interesting, thanks for the link! So, they gave me a choice between brown and white gravy, and they were served on the side. And the meat was indeed very crispy. I’d say all evidence points to this being “chicken-fried” notwithstanding what the menu called it. I was just surprised to see it on the menu period!

Yeah, there is a new version of WordPress I’m working with. I kind of did that caption by accident, not sure how or whether I can replicate it.

Haha. Well, most of the malls in the USA seem to be half empty these days or closed up all together. Here mall shopping is still a big deal. Kind of a family gathering event. Of course, the aircon is free so that’s a big draw I suppose.

Yeah, I’ll consider alternatives like a tenderizer. I’m still on a quest though to find the kind of meat I prefer. I’ve heard rumors of a place that sells USDA cuts although it may only be wholesale. But as I said, the meat I’m using tastes good enough, just have to maybe get used to it being different texture-wise.

No, you are correct. He is building it with a partner (presumably a girlfriend or ex-girlfriend). It’s a very risky proposition regardless. I know the way some guys do it is to have the land purchased in the name of a Filipino and then have a long term lease agreement (50 years or so). I would not do that personally because I also like the idea of packing up and moving on should I feel the urge…

Yeah, the big difference with the “walker” groups is that there are no Hares, you just kind of wing it. Also, none of the Hash rituals (and no sitting on ice).
I can handle being lost I suppose, as long as I’m not lost alone. Hell, if cannibalism becomes necessary I need someone at my side, right?

Kev, yeah I honestly don’t know the burly guy’s name. He does speak English too of course, but we’ve never really chatted. I’ve seen him at the Hash, although he is not there every week. A lot of the younger guys here don’t stay year round. They work on oil rigs or do the merchant marine or something similar. Also, Europeans get lots of time off work. We currently have an big influx of Swedes here doing their 6 or 8 weeks off thing. Anyway, I’ll try and do better at learning more about my fellow expats…

Fascinating stuff as always, Kevin. You should write a book of your own. Just publish all the good advice you’ve given me over the years, some of which I’ve actually followed!
Anyway, it’s early in the change yet but working to put a positive spin on my thought processes seems to be helping already. I’ll cop to letting emotions override being rational far too often, although truthfully that happens with or without alcohol. I’ll get there though.

Greg, this trip has reinforced for me the correctness of my decision to spend my remaining years overseas. I’m probably going to be unhappy where ever I am, but I’m unhappy in a more satisfying way in the Philippines. I don’t know how else to explain it…
