I’ve noticed that as I get older I’m becoming more cautious. At least in part, it is because I realize I have just a limited number of years left to enjoy here on Earth. Don’t want to spend them as a cripple!

Between now and the end of April is the calm season. Very few storms at all and the seas (well, bay) remain calm. Last year the Arizona floater was brought out a little early and got washed up on the beach during a storm. They are waiting another week or two this year I understand.
Safety is not a big thing here and I don’t there are any real precautions taken. Certainly, I’ve never seen anything like a life jacket on board. I guess if there was a bad storm they’d just send people back to shore on the raft and hope the bar could ride it out without damage. Honestly though, it’s only a hundred yards or so to the beach. As long as you know a little about swimming, no problem. Although I’m always amazed at how few Filipinas know how to swim in a country with 7000 islands…

Interesting. I know All Saints Day on the first is a big one. My first trip to Cebu I arrived on Thursday preceding Good Friday. Everything was closed. When I asked what was going on I was told “Maudy Thursday sir”. I was raised Christian but I’d never heard of that before.
Just one of the “percs” that comes with living in a religious country I suppose…

Dan, yeah I agree. There are fates worse than death, and I think being paralyzed with little cognitive functioning is one of them. I suppose miracles can happen, but I doubt the outcome of the Bar Celona/Cheap Charlies competition will matter at all to Graham.
I was in Cheap Charlies tonight and asked if Graham’s girlfriend Heidi was still with him in the hospital. Was happy to hear she is indeed. So there is that at least…

No, I got to eat a soft and hard shell taco with a cup of chili. It’s just hard to accommodate so many people. Most places aren’t set up for it.
Yeah, there is definitely a Hash culture of sorts. I enjoy it for the most part, but I’m not a fanatic about it. 🙂

Thanks for the link to your old post…yeah, I’m not QUITE that bad yet! It was pretty hilarious for me to read the comment I left there though:

I guess this is Karma’s payback for my arrogance. Still, it was just a simple mistake that I compounded by being so sure of my math without actually “doing” the math. Either that or early-onset dementia, which the scorekeeper told me later was her first thought. Oh well.

It’s funny, one of the Wednesday hikers does have a machete on his belt. And I’ve heard a Hare carries one when he lays trail. I just need to get a definitive answer on the legality of a foreigner using one, since we are prohibited from carrying any type of “weapon”.
Yeah, Justin fully intends to pursue the F5 route. By his own admission, he’s been a bit lazy, but it’s clearly the way to go in his situation.

Yeah, it is a long road ahead made all the more difficult by being stuck in a foreign country with little to no support system in place. I understand that the only money Graham has comes as income from the bar. That’s never a sure thing and it’s all the more iffy with a new bar fixing to open right across the street.

Vaster, I admit that other than something us Yanks call “pot pies”, I had no experience with anything other than dessert pies. Reader Kevin Kim has been making his own pies for a while now which got me interested in seeing what the fuss is all about. Several restaurants that cater to the expat community serve them here, so I’ve been giving them a go. Not sure I’m ready to take on making my own yet, but you never know.

Yeah, my original bad pronunciation was saying “Castille-hos”. Hey, a vestige of the Spanish colonial period and they say “Castille” in Spain, right? Anyone, I compounded my error by misrepresenting the correct way to pronounce Casillejos. I asked a Filipino to say the name slowly for me, and indeed, I heard the “yeh” of the double “L” in there. Yes, the irony of Graham’s stroke immediately after announcing the change wasn’t lost on me but being agnostic on the possibility of fate intervening, I disconnected the two events.
For a bit more inside baseball, Graham’s former partner has been taking charge. He set up the GoFundMe page, which impressed me. He’s also announced that he has once again taken over the food operation and re-instituted the former menu. So, big improvements continue. And by improvement, I mean reversing the bad decisions Graham implemented prior to his stroke.
I was in the bar last night and it was rockin’. We’ll see what happens when and if Graham recovers.

No, there is really no formal communication between Hares. In fact, until the day of the Hash, most Hares want the trail to be a surprise. In some kennels, the Hare actually heads out just 30 minutes or so before the pack and marks trail as he goes. In that system, catching the Hare is a big deal.
Anyway, it’s not a big deal. I don’t want to repeat a trail we’ve recently done, but I will find new paths in the same area. I originally chose Calapacuan because we hadn’t been out that way in quite a while. I guess Leech had the same thought. Oh well.
And oh yeah, about the rain. It did stop on the trail. And right at the conclusion of the on-home function, a big thunderstorm rolled through. I took a trike home, but the rain was coming in sideways, so I still wound up getting soaked…
