I was tired of darts yesterday…
Brian, I haven’t played CIV for years now. I think the last version I had was CIV IV. Back in those days, I played off a CD in the disc drive. My laptop doesn’t even have one of those. I guess the new versions are downloaded.
Anyway, I was a fanatic and really enjoyed the nuances involved in successfully building a civilization. Have fun!

Scary story! I’m glad reading it is now in the past. I hope I passed your test, though.I’ve never really thought about “past” and “passed,” and using the correct version always seemed to come naturally. I didn’t really have any trouble with your test either. I guess I just don’t trust my brain anymore, but when I wrote: “Sally from The Green Room called out to us as we hiked past her house.” and then later, “We called out to Julica as we passed by her place.” it seemed I was saying the same thing two different ways. I actually did look it up and got the definitions you gave, but I was still unsure, hence the editor’s note I left. So, I’m going to say that both my examples are correct, but I can’t tell you why.

No, I don’t know of anyone who hikes at night. The trails are far too treacherous, with potential hazards that are hard to see even in daylight. Being stuck out there after dark is one of my nightmares. Hell, I don’t even walk home on the pavement at night.
Yeah, I’ll keep on walking. And drinking. The bookends of my days here.

I will have to vacation somewhere out of the country before December. Right now, my first choice is probably Cambodia. There are also some Hash events in Thailand I’d consider attending. I would really like to go back to Vietnam again too.

The first thing I need to put on the list is “don’t forget to make a list”. I already give myself a pat-down to feel for my phone and wallet before leaving the house. I’ll start adding the wrist too, I guess.
Last week was effectively the championship–we went head-to-head with the second-place team. Yesterday was the last scheduled game of the season against an also-ran that was meaningless in terms of the final standings.

Wracked what’s left of my brain, trying to remember shwimteo. Asking Google for “Korean huts” brought me pics, but no one used the Korean name for them that I could find. Went to one of your old Kevin’s Walk blogs and saw photos, but alas, they were uncaptioned. Shinto sounded similar in my head, but I see now the words have no connection. Ah, well. Now I know!

Well, I’ve been doing stupid stuff more frequently lately, especially when I write. And my memory ain’t what it used to be either–I can’t remember all the things I’ve forgotten! (luckily, my sense of humor remains intact)
I may well be in the 10-20% who enter Biden-land. But honestly, if dementia means being stupid and not knowing it, how bad can it be? My biggest fear is breaking down physically and losing the ability to go out and do all the things I enjoy. Not going to fret about it, though; just going to take each day as it comes and keep on keeping on as long as I can.

Well, I didn’t go that far! I took out a lot of my improvements/additions though. Got about half of my deposit back which is more than I expected. The house sat vacant for 9 months, but it is rented now.

Damn, missed that. I’m not sure what happened, but some glitch randomly deleted letters from words in several places of this post. I thought I had caught them all. As for Cincinnati, I have no idea why spell check let me get away with that abomination. I think I had the spelling so mangled it didn’t recognize what I was trying to say.

Yes, the braces on her teeth were the first thing I noticed when we met. It was more of a job interview than a girlfriend test, though. She wants to be my masseuse, and I wanted to meet in person before inviting her into my house. She seems sane enough.
As to being a walking ATM, I do think I have a reputation as being a soft touch. The gals I helped out yesterday are all “friends,” at least in the sense that I’ve known them for a while. Unmentioned in this post were a couple of other requests for help that I ignored. You’ve got to pick and choose and trust your gut as to who is the most worthy. You can’t help them all.

Yeah, something doesn’t smell right for sure. The widow wanted an almost immediate cremation, and the police tried to deem it a suicide from day 1. JR’s best friend was able to get some outside eyes looking at this, and at least there was an autopsy. Everyone is awaiting the results, and the delay in releasing them is also suspicious. Hopefully, justice will prevail.
I rode that cable car several times and always enjoyed it, but yeah, you can’t help thinking about the “what ifs.” Of course, I never knew about those previous crashes you mentioned, so my ignorance was bliss.
Your Tagalog vocabulary is nearly equal to mine! I usually don’t have any problem identifying a bakla–the broad shoulders and exaggerated female walk are giveaways. Now, a friend of mine is dating a bakla and thinks she is a real girl. I asked what makes you think she is a woman? He said, “I don’t know, I can just feel it inside of me…” Joke lang.

I guess I’d say it’s generally not a mistake to live life on your terms, even if the results are sometimes disastrous. And, as you say, you learn to grow and change or keep trying, again and again, hoping to get it right this time. Either way, the hours get filled, and life goes on.

Yeah, I am a creature of comfort these days. They didn’t even have internet access–talk about roughing it! I’ve suggested that the next campout be held adjacent to a place with rooms for rent. Then I’d gladly join in with the singing ’round the campfire before retiring to a bed.
I’d say the majority of time, the Filipinas get my jokes or at least pretend to. My puns might be a little too over the top for them to grasp though. Doesn’t stop me from trying!
My daughter-in-law has made it clear she never wants my granddaughter to read the blog. Can’t say that I blame her for that. I guess I come off as a dirty old man to the folks back home.

Yes, all the tent dwellers spent the night. Twelve people altogether, and they all seem to have had a good time. They are already planning their next adventure.
Those were indeed batter-fried potatoes, and they were quite tasty. Much better than french fries.

James, haha! Yes, this Joy is probably the easiest to take. She pesters me about coming to her bar to buy lady drinks, but she is always sweet when I am there. I let her come visit once a month or so. Husband? She told me it was her “brother”.
Well, I wear shoes because I walk almost everywhere and it is more comfortable than sandals. Yes, some shirts make me look fatter than others, especially those damn Hash shirts. Oh well, I guess a big belly makes me appear to be rich. Nothing more attractive than that in these parts!
It’s weird that you mention people calling out my name. Just happened again the other day when I was hiking. I didn’t recognize her at all, let alone remember her name. And then there are the trike drivers…”where you go, John?” What the hell, I’ve never told a trike driver my name. I just say “Alta Vista, please”. I don’t get it.

Cool. Is it lighter or easier to pack than those round one-man popups?
I used to be big into camping as a young man. These days, the discomfort outweighs the getting back to nature benefits. When this camping trip was being planned I briefly considered it then thought about the mosquitos, the lack of shower, flushing toilets, etc. Nope. I’ll enjoy the hike and the cookout this afternoon but was happy to wake up in my bedroom this morning.

Kev, all my slow cookers have had that shape, including the brand name “Crockpot”. When I needed to replace the Crockpot I brought with me it would have cost like $150. to get one shipped here. It took a while, but I found the slow cooker I have now at a department store. The brand is Kyowa which I’ve never heard of. It works fine but doesn’t have a timer option, just heat settings.

Like you, I don’t see someone being able to pull this off unless he was unconscious. Knowing a little about him, I can picture him in a drunken rage (he’d been attacked by his wife earlier that night) saying “fuck it”, impulsively grabbing the knife, and violently slashing his throat without much forethought or planning. What a waste of life.
