Roundabout

I don’t get that you do all that walking and still have that stomach. Is walking bullshit?

A fool’s Hash

That’s one incredible looking woman in the Isanbul pic. You justifiably look like the cat who got the cream. But what’s up with insane drivel in the comments below? The internet wasn’t that new in 2005.
May interested readers ask who was Carol?

That’s more like it

You seem to have the most alluring, stunning woman in all the pics. Unsure why you don’t go all in on radical dietary changes and switch to something like red wine while you’re about it. When life is giving you what you long wanted!

Feeling like Royal tea

Danny looks like a rum sort. Don’t wish to sow any seeds of doubt but can you trust him round your dogs, property and women?

Just another town along the road

I paused at the fish market to get a picture and the gal in the blue apron greeted me with a hearty “hello, sir John.” Then she asked me if I was feeling better after the operation. I’m standing there thinking, who the hell is this? She looked vaguely familiar and I assume at one time she must have worked in a bar I frequent, but where and when I have no clue. That actually happens to me quite often.

I mean let’s call this what it is. It’s waaaycism. With the best will in the world and despite our tactful goodwill, we just DO NOT register and recall faces outside the in-group as deeply. Plus you have a somewhat transactional relationship with the female population there and no one is that good at recollecting shop workers. Those fish look tasty.

Got to say, your woman looks kind of classy in pics so props to you on an upbeat ending to a year in which the health gods sought to test you out. Any serious new year’s resolutions…?

Jungle love

“Dan, yes, it turns out my problems were all in my head. Once they were removed, I could breathe normally again.”

Nicely done!

» Posted By Dan On 17/December/2023 @ 9:46 am

I always said your health concerns were bullshit but never once have you admitted I was right and apologised. Off topic, I know, but what are your New Year’s resolutions? For the record mine are to cause more racial offence in the trans librarian community but, as usual, I’ll probably give up on Jan 2.

Putting the cart before the whore

Good post. Read the linked post you wrote in Korea all those years ago and that was interesting, too. I know there that you -at that time- had found your discussions with bar girls in the PI “depressing” and yet, and yet. Not depressing now every day?

I wonder if “so sad” ever found his kid. Plus, the chances of it being his kid were fifty fifty.

Up on Cripple Creek

“Why in the hell was I directed to check in three hours in advance of the operation? I was hungry and cranky but powerless to do anything but submit to the Filipino way.”

Pretty sure in advance of surgery requiring general anesthesia that would be the way any place. Stay cranky. You’ll drop some weight through the limpid recovery days and get the chance to reassess things.

Still amongst the living

I am reminded of some words from the Bagvagadvita. “And now I have become God, a destroyer of worlds. But I still like tits.”

The last day…

Fingers crossed all goes well. I’m sure it will and I have full confidence in the Philippines health services and professionals but if you do die can I have your flatscreen?

» Posted By Dan On 09/December/2023 @ 7:27 pm

The final countdown?

You don’t want to be overdoing the general anesthesia fears to that hospital. There’s a possiblity they undershoot the necessary sedative and you wake up mid op. Better to get tanked up with lovely yummy drugs and wake up smiling Sunday.

Insomnia is a bitch. JP recounts his day’s every moment when he gets it. He finds it puts him back to sleep. But then having consumed alcohol changes its nature, as the dopamine is either rushing out or charging back in as the booze leaves the body (can’t remember which).

Come and go with me

Try a movie called Fair Play on Nflix. I realized I was enjoying it in a kind of throwback fashion after a few minutes and a grim opening sex scene because it is redolent of a 90s mood thriller. Though it has some credulity stretching relationship aspects Eddie Marsen is in it so there’s that.

Thankfully

Hey, not looking bad in that pic with the sly feminine company. From your updates, I’d expected you to look like a sack of shit. Good news on the liver and bladder. The liver is a true marvel of recovery -not that I wish to tempt old father fate- but that SOB loves to take a beating then go off on its own to self heal. Plus it probably laughs in the face of that weak pissy beer you drain.

But boy you so play both ends of the ukelele. Chilling with the rent a chats then home to do the red wine on the veranda thing in good civilised domestic order. Not sure the two have ever been successfully combined long term in the sad history of mankind. Do it right, brother or shit’s gonna fall on your head.

On a binge

Two words: sleeping pills. I mean, at this point, why wouldn’t you? Use them to get you through this temporary health hump then cease and desist when your Zzzzs return to normal.
I just spread Godfather 2 over three nights on Netflix. They have the massive 3.5 hour cut with nothing left out. Thoroughly brilliant. Then there’s that doc about the well to do southern family whose paterfamilias offed his wife and son, can’t remember it’s title. You’re welcome.

The Watcher

Even too much vit B can mess with sleep taken at the wrong time, sounds like you’re glooped up on stimulants. Try l-theanine, magnesium, and chamomile tea but don’t take my word for it. Seems a harsh result for a non lifelong smoker. Point of interest, how many a day smoker were you…?

Get some beers in and don’t go out for a few weeks unless it’s to the hospital. I once read that rest: HELPS RECOVERY. It was the advice of the same wise Chinaman who said man whose cock hard have soft head. But at least -yet- you haven’t been classically scammed by a south-east Asian pick-up artist in a pink bikini with sleek golden curves yum yum. Thank god for Netflix in our times of troubles, oh Lord.
Amen

Doggone it

What a shit day at the office. But in terms of your legacy you actually changed history by proving dogs are not our best friend. So well done. You simplify didn’t make him sit up and beg enough. One has to treat dogs like one treats one’s woman: make it very very clear you don’t really want them in the house past 11.
Seriously though I wouldn’t be putting up with those dogs on the street. Can you Macafee them?

Walking my life away

People hammer you for downing beers but literally what else are you going to do there? As an expat you could walk the dogs and read the papers but that still leaves 14 hours of daytime and we all need some community. Just so happens that yours hangs in bars. Unless there are tea shops full of English language speakers you are not letting us onto about I don’t know how you would have friends if you did not call in on these establishments so fuck the naysayers and keep on doing what keeps you sane. Health obstacles would appear even if you mummified and subsisted on organic lettuce. That said, I would also take up learning something.

It comes and goes

It is a well known fact in business naming circles that an establishment calling itself any derivative of ‘orchid (The Black Orchid, The Lonely Orchid, Orchidaceous Interior Designs etc) is hiding a dark lie from the customer. Avoid.
Yes, time does proceed abnormally quickly of late, even for non-drinkers; though they’ll swear they are getting more out of life, despite their debts, messy relationships, and down time feeling miserable. They probably sit around, tending to their orchids, bringing their orchids up in conversation, knowing the dark lie they are hiding from the world.

In doctor nation

“Teri and Swan watched television and I drank alone while singing along with some sad songs on my Spotify app. That’s even more pathetic than buying lady drinks in exchange for some company.”
lolled at this. Great opening paragraph for a novel I’d actually read.

If you ain’t got nothin’

Always disappointed at the photos of your fellow walkers/expats. Expect more deranged biker types with forehead tats carrying an 18 year old under each arm. Your acquaintances look Victorian by comparison. If Victorians wore vests all the time.

As the arrows fly

You seem to be attempting wilfully to evoke fear in yourself of late, what with the instant dread of MS due to a mild sequence of knee-buckling incidents while absolutely par for the course memory slips and cognitive mishaps alert you to aging fears. Well all I can say is, “Dart on!” The game/sport has multiple proven health benefits, the most obvious of which is maintained hand-eye coordination sharpness; the most underrated is its benefits to memory and the brain in general.

By the way, how far in meterage are you strictly supposed to be standing on the oche from the board in the PI?

I’m walkin’

Sounds like you jarred a nerve when you clumsily started into running motion without the necessary 5 minute stretch and warm up. Those babies have the memories of Scotsmen owed a shilling and so the symptomatics may persist into yuletide. Please, do loyal readers a favor and do not Google your symptoms again. The fucker knows only how to reference terminal organ-related or neurological conditions.
James of Sutherland rather ungallantly points out the happy girth on show around the carb fest. But it does make me wonder, is diabetes a major thing in The Philippines?

Abbrev.

On a side bar note, I totally get why Swan doesn’t want to be picced and uploaded. You basically tell all on this blog. That’s why we live vicariously through you. But I wouldn’t wat to be part of the expose and I guess she either reads this blog or knows your intentions. Heck, that could be why Lucky finally went for you. And thus I’m a bit uneasy with the half photos, the almost-profile views. Smacks of someone who really would rather not being taking part in the activity of being photographed being photographed.

Like where you’ve positioned the TV on the wall. People entering the apt will feel you are sat there awaiting their return.

By the dawn’s early light

There was a massive study out of Sweden about a decade ago purporting to (I felt) reluctantly prove that the negative effects of persistent long term consumption of alcohol were offset by physical activity, particularly cardio. Heavy walking gigs probably qualify. So if you don’t correlate those pissy looking beers with sitting on your arse all day, you might get away with it for a whiles yet. My problem is the bar food, all that orange breadcrumbed oily anti-sustenance. Bet you love hearing all this criticism aimed at YOUR one life!
Haven’t commented of late because I wanted to bite my tongue about the live-in, love-in drama, which good men can’t make head nor tail of. That plus I can’t get the lame racist-sounding.pun about it being a potential black swan life event out of my head. No racism. But I’d like to amplify other commenters’ apprehensions and add that dogs know things. This one just gave you his opinion on the new set up in brute canine fashion.

Solitary Saturday night

Those guys are living in a movie in their heads and looking for extras to play the bit parts of their failures.
Or something. Anyway, feck em. They don’t provide the world with the content you do so don’t take it to heart and keep loning it up.

Ain’t dead yet

Love the sound of those B12 shots, could do with a weekly infusion myself. They say that the excess gets harmlessly and orangely pissed away anyway, so why not triple down on Vit C pills while you’re at it? And isn’t Vit D the one they now claim can ward off cognitive decline (though you must gets tons of that photosynthetically whilst a gamblin through the trees)? Your doctors seem appreciably more sympathetic than the puritanical reapers I’m used to dealing with -and that to me is a good reflection on a lazy culture most men would like to retire to. Well done, John Kim indeed! (By the way, his woman sounds like she’s been ripped from a different century. The disasters that befell him previously paved the way to an angel and a life. Like the B shots, could do with a smack in the face like that myself.)
Personally I would not be looking to knock the booze on the head. Boy, I can picture myself taking that raft to a cold one out at sea to watch sun down every night of my life and not getting bored of the vista ever. So it’s got to be food. (I also think beer carbs aren’t the worst kind, but if you insist on cutting back on those, why not start ordering up large glasses of resveratrol-filled red wine -or don’t they sell it in Philipino bars?)
Seriously, just avoid orange food and your blood numbers will be pythagoreanly good.
