Yep, the new normal. However, I do believe that by summer 2021, things will be much closer to the “old” normal!! I am going to remain optimistic until someone tells me otherwise!! LOL

John, came across an interesting study from the rand corp. (which is a pretty well respected think tank) that modeled economic impact vs. various strengths of lockdown. Only for the US, but is fun to play with.
I believe that their key assumption used is that in the US, each life is worth approx. $10MM in a ripple effect through the economy. So, every increase in deaths due to loosening of any restrictions, results in a negative $10MM impact + a negative $X USD impact from additional sicknesses, etc.. However, keeping the lockdowns in place (depending upon severity), results in a negative $X USD impact.

For the most part, if I read the report correctly and their assumptions, economically in the long run, we are better off with the pain of the lockdowns (depending upon severity).
They broke the lockdowns into 5 different levels (1= no restrictions to 5= most stringent). Did not play with it enough to know exactly what the sweet spot is. I dont think we will ever know.
For the Philippines, the average economic impact of each life may be less than $10 MM, so that will most likely change where the sweet spot is for the PI.
Trying to figure out what to do with this virus is somewhat like trying to catch a knuckleball. You think it is going one direction and suddenly changes direction, sometimes for the better and sometime for the worse.
At the end of the day, probably those who are “pro lockdown” and those who are “anti lockdown” will both be right to some degree.
Keep strong and keep putting in those miles (or kms).

Not to be pedantic (though I guess I am anyway LOL), but pole to pole reference is probably only referring to eg. North Pole to South Pole, not a complete circumnavigation along the “vertical” axis. So, if John is expecting a equator badge, he is only halfway there.

MY thoughts are that a lot of pretty educated people worldwide much smarter than I are scared shitless over this virus. So, I am tending to think/prepare for the worse and don’t think we are over reacting.
I would much rather look back six months from now and think we may have over reacted rather than really really being in trouble because we didn’t do what we could have done.
I just think of a scenario where the area hospital has 10 ICU beds and I am (or my parents or a close friend or whoever) is patient 11.

Don’t want to be a Debbie Downer, but I would be surprised if the lockdown doesn’t go LONGER than 30 days.
I don’t think that the peak will arrive for 3-4 weeks yet, and once that wave starts to hit the hospitals…..
The saving grace will be if the virus (like many others) does not reproduce/transmit very well in hot temps/humidity. I have been surprised that ASEAN countries have not been harder hit. Could be temp related or maybe lack of testing.
In any case, be smart and stay safe.

John, Good on you. The only “concern” I would have is that hopefully she does not have any false expectations. I dont mean on any sort of romantic level, but more of the idea that she starts to “expect” the money.
It no longer becomes a gift, but more of an entitlement. Not sure how you can ensure this does not happen.
But, the upside to helping this family out far outweighs the downside.

ALways tough when someone you know passes. It definitely brings ones mortality to the forefront.
Seems like the things that caused Greg’s passing were of his own doing, so while I have sympathy for dying at such a young age, it is tough to muster sympathy for the road that he took to get there. RIP

It is a glorified pressure cooking, but can do pretty much anything – slow cook, pressure cook, make rice, make yoghurt, etc etc.
