Unfulfilled

A disappointing Hash yesterday. The trail pretty much sucked ass. I stuck with it longer than a lot of folks did, but I finally bailed early too.

Perhaps you can spot the problem. At the top of the photo you see how we walked the length of Baloy Beach–nothing wrong with that. But where we reached the river the Hare had originally intended to have us cross by banka boat. But the boat operators insisted on us paying an inflated foreigner price (aka “skin tax”) and the Hare declined. Instead we circled back to the National Highway and walked all the way out to Matain to reconnect with the intended trail. I Hash to avoid having to do boring and noisy highway hikes. Once on the mountain portion Salty Cum and I were the only ones on trail, and the trail was confusing and not all that well marked. We blazed our way on down near that light colored spot in the middle of the map. So we didn’t really shortcut all that much I suppose. I did take a small tumble and got a scrape and a blood blister to show for it.
The best part for me was near the beginning. In all the time I’ve been visiting and living here, I never attempted to climb on the rocks that separate Baloy Beach from Barretto. Now I have.
No hay problema!
The last photo I took. After leaving the beach it all pretty much sucked.

Eh, well at least I now have the confidence to know my trail will not be the worst one in memory!

Today has been off the rails. Not sure what’s wrong but I couldn’t even get motivated to walk at all. That almost never happens. I’m just chalking it up to my body saying give me a fucking day off. And so I have.

Looking forward to a better day tomorrow!

  1. Always good to listen to your body. Take a rest. Get to know Lucky better. Give him a nice mite wash.

Sorry the trail sucked. I noticed how much of it seemed to be along a road. Too much of the path went through civilization. Maybe someone should introduce a Hash rule: at least 80% of the trail must always be away from civilization, i.e., most of the trail ought to be along mountain paths, creeks, rivers, or the beach. Passing shanties counts as being “away from civilization.” No city walking!

  2. That’s actually just what I did…gave lucky a bath with medicated soap bar, then one with medicated shampoo, and finally a bath with medicine mixed in the water. He was not a happy camper by the third go round. But he is coming around and I can tell he already considers this his home. The neighbors walked by yesterday and he was barking at them like a guard dog. Good job Lucky!

And yes, most Hares will minimize city walking to the extent possible. It’s hard to please everyone but that is something I think we can all agree on. I like a little rural/shanty thrown in with my wilderness, but keep the damn highway with trucks and buses off the Hash!
