Only one other hiker, Gary, showed up for the Friday trek. This is the route I led us on.Part of the climb featured these steps. The view from near the topI was a little surprised to see that a small portion of the route I chose had been part of Monday’s Hash trail that I avoided.I stayed with what I knew. Paying my respects to Easter MountainA visit with the mountain mama OneliaI have friends in high placesFinding our way down an unfamiliar path was challenging, but we got it done.
The usual afternoon rituals, then it was time to head back into town for the SOB.
What beer o’clock looks like from the neighborhoodWet Spot was packed with a record-setting crowd for the SOB.La Oficina finished fourth. I’m usually in sync with my fellow judges, but I had voted them as having the best dance routine on the night.Queen Victoria’s performance earned them third placeAlaska, last weeks winner, took second last nightAnd the Wet Spot girls went home with first place money. Good job!
I had arrived at Wet Spot around 4:30, and when the show finished at 8:00, I’d had my fill of Zeros. I’m such a lightweight nowadays, but maybe that’s a good thing.
I’ll be back out for more soon enough; it’s Saturday night, after all. I tentatively plan to do the Maze bar crawl, but we’ll see how I feel when I get there.
It could have happened that way. Especially if they are Native American speakers.
Oh, and I got a delivery today:
Yep, the esteemed Kevin Kim is preparing to embark on another of his famous cross-peninsula hikes in Korea. And I have the souvenir t-shirt to wear as I follow along vicariously.
Which reminds me, the other day, I was wearing one of the “I’m not your Goddamn ATM” shirts Kevin had made for me. As I passed by a trike driver, he laughed and gave me a high-five. I guess he could relate.
Damn, I haven’t heard this song in a decade or so. And suddenly I remembered it. Strange.

Nice trail, and no rain!
Question: you’ve described yourself as a slowpoke on group walks, but when you’re the leader, do people try to walk ahead of you?
Queen Victoria’s performance earned them third place
Nothing like a little friendly boob-grabbing, I guess.
And the Wet Spot girls went home with first place money. Good job!
Does home-field advantage always apply? Or do some non-home groups win the SOB from time to time?
re: 2023 walk tee
I’m glad the tee got to you okay.
“when you’re the leader, do people try to walk ahead of you?”
Normally, yes. Leader is not precisely the right word for it. If it is left to me to pick the trail, I’ll say something like, “Okay, we’ll go up behind Marian Hills, circle back to Four Corners, then take the tires down to Columban.” Folks will walk at their own pace, then periodically wait for us slowpokes to catch up (it is supposed to be a group hike), and then continue on to the next stop. Yesterday, Gary and I stuck together because we walk at a similar pace.
Yes, at the SOB, “home-field advantage” does exist, perhaps more than it should. The home bar goes first, and as a judge, I give their performance a score that sets a high bar for the others to try and exceed. That does happen occasionally. I thought it did this week, but the other judges didn’t see it that way.
It was a bit of a surprise to have a package I wasn’t expecting delivered. I guess I’d forgotten I’d ordered it. I’ll be taking the shirt out for a test walk this morning.
