Yep, we did it again. Another group hike, another route to explore and see what we could see on Kalaklan Ridge.
But there was still more highness in my day to come. I ventured out as usual at beer o’clock, making Sloppy Joe’s my first stop. I made the decision not to attend this week’s SOB primarily because the venue (Voodoo) is small and gets crowded. I see it as sacrificing my seat so an out-of-towner can enjoy the show. Once or twice a month is plenty for me.
Lots of familiar faces to socialize with at Sloppy’s.
At six o’clock, I moved on to a new rooftop venue, The Rite Spot. Swan was waiting for me there.
The grand opening of The Rite Spot On The Roof will be tonight. I invited my neighbors to join me for some beers upstairs. I also made a crockpot of chili and will serve it with some cornbread. Swan is making a sausage casserole. I went out this afternoon and bought a couple of rocking chairs to add to the seating options. I’ll be sharing photos from tonight’s event tomorrow.
Well, maybe there are spiritual needs. And puns.
Had enough? Me too. Besides, that cornbread won’t bake itself!

Ah, yes—poured concrete! An Asian standby.
Jim showing the local kids how it’s done.
Took me a bit to see the ball. Did he sink the basket?
And yes, the burgers I was served were delicious.
I like how one is upside-down, but I imagine that doesn’t affect the taste. Are those brioche buns? At a guess, they are.
Trivia: sometimes, though, you do have to consider gravity when stacking your burger. If you don’t want the burger’s juices to soak your bottom bun, making it fray like wet toilet paper, you have to put down a nice bed of lettuce (“bottomings” instead of toppings) to catch the burger juice. Other things like pickles and tomatoes can go on top of the burger.
With Reubens, gravity is even more important because you’re layering on sauerkraut, which is very runny. Never put sauerkraut on the bottom slice of bread. I’ve been to restaurants where the kitchen was retarded and stacked the Reuben wrong, and the result was a sad, soaked experience.
The nighttime views were quite pleasant as well.
I’m tempted to Photoshop a dragon flying in the distance. It looks like a dragon-y sort of night.
Don’t know if Jim sank the basket–I wasn’t around to see; that’s another Scott photo.
My helper, Teri, made the burgers, and the buns were purchased at a local bakery. They were good, even upside down. I’m not an expert, but they did appear to be brioche. Good tip on putting the lettuce on the bottom of the burger. I’ve never considered that before.
Love the dragon! I shared it with my guests last night, and they were suitably impressed. Thanks!
