On the streets of Barretto

I’m going to keep on keeping on as long as I can, that’s for sure.

Not a lot to say about my Wednesday, so let’s get it over and done with, shall we?

I was the only one to show up for the Wednesday Walkers group hike, so I decided to keep it simple with a solo street walk through Barretto. Yeah, it’s such a boring walk, I didn’t take a single photograph. I did have my earbuds to keep me company, and I enjoyed singing along with some of my favorite golden oldies. Right up until the moment I almost got hit by a taxi cab that I didn’t hear approaching from behind me. Damn, when it is my time to go, I hope I don’t go in a stupid fashion like that.

I survived the 7K journey and finished at Sit-n-Bull, where I got myself a Maui chicken burger (with ham and a pineapple ring) for lunch.

When beer o’clock rolled around, Swan advised that she was taking a “me day,” so I was once again on my own. I wound up going to Cheap Charlies and just stayed there until it was time to head back home. I just couldn’t think of anywhere else I’d rather be, so why bother looking?

I watched the sun go down from my barstool perch.
Foodies, the restaurant downstairs, delivered me an order of the best chicken quesadillas in town. I ate half and shared the leftovers with the waitresses.

And then the day came to an end. I’m happy to report that I awoke to a new day this morning.

Courtesy of Facebook memories, here’s a photo of Walter Lee and Bonnie Rose before they became my mom and dad.

I reckon that’s around 1950 or so.

Moving on in the June 2019 archives, I write about some special goodbyes in Anjeong-ri and then the final goodbyes as I left Seoul for the last time. Will I ever go back? I don’t know, as much as I love it there, the things I loved the most are gone now. Never say never, but I doubt it. On that last night in Seoul, I visited the famous country dive bar, Grand Ole Opry. It’s long gone now, but the post from my first visit in 2005 brought back some happy memories. And now they are all part of The Story of My Life.

I also had a farewell lunch with the esteemed Mr. Kevin Kim and my nephew. Kevin wrote about it here.

In my internet wanderings, I came across this chart of the least expensive cities to spend your retirement years.

Nope, no city in the Philippines made the cut.

Which is a nice lead-in to today’s YouTube video about countries other than Thailand and the Philippines that are cheap retirement options. I’ve only been to two of them, Cambodia and Vietnam, and both are worthy of consideration. But I made my choice, and I’m going to stick with it. (Yeah, the title, “Don’t Miss This Places,” would make Kevin Kim’s head explode.)

Let’s see if there is any funny business going on:

And don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
Maybe you should just sit down and shut up, Data.
Damn, that brings back memories of TVs when they had tubes. It doesn’t work so much with circuits, but I do occasionally have to reboot my laptop.

Another day, another post. How long can it last? I hope to stick around and find out.

  1. Re: retirement cities chart
Putting on my grammar hat; you said, “I came across this chart of the least expensive cities to spend your retirement years.”

Bit misleading. LOL The chart is not about the “least expensive” cities, but rather cities which are relatively cheap. I was surprised to see Lisbon on the list. I spent a bit less than a week there a couple of months ago, and I did not mind it cheap, but rather on par with other Western European cities. Granted, I probably was not in the “cheap” side of town, but it would be interesting to see what a person would get for a monthly rent of $700.

Re: your last trip to Korea
it is tough “going home”. Sorry that your last trip back to Korea was such a downer. With the passage of time, you may be able to approach a return trip with the eyes of a newbie.

  2. Brian, yes, it would have been more accurate to have written, “chart of inexpensive cities.” On the subject of grammar, your comment on Lisbon says, “I did not mind it cheap.” Couldn’t FIND the right word? 🙂

Well, it’s been seven years, so maybe it would seem new again in Korea. It would be nice to show Swan around as well. We’ll see.
