Low places

And another one bites the dust.

My Brit “friend” John is the latest lefty to unfriend me on Facebook over politics. That’s something I’ve never done myself, but I don’t give a shit when it happens. I’d known John since we’d played darts together in Korea, and I don’t recall ever talking politics back then. Even now, I’ll just post memes like the one above and leave it at that without additional commentary. It’s amazing to see the head exploding reactions I get. In his final comment, John said that I’m a purveyor of hate. Oh well, at least I didn’t get shot. Good luck getting things sorted in your own fucked up country, John.

As far as days go, yesterday was a good one for me. Let me show you what I mean:

Our neighbors Joss and Martin joined us for the Sunday Sweets Stroll.
That pile of trash is still floating in the river…
…but now there was a new addition: a dead dog. That was the first time I’d seen that in the river. Doggone it.
The public market in Santo Tomas.
“Here kiddie kiddles, come and get some!”
Here comes some now.
The view from here. See that house on the hill in the distance?

Here, let me zoom in for you:

That’s where I live.
Walking the streets in the Santa Monica subdivision.
We added a couple of kilometers to our regular route and finished up at Harley’s on Baloy Beach after an 8K trek.
The Harley’s view.
I enjoyed my after-hike reward of a heaping helping of fish and chips.

Later in the afternoon, I attended to my weekly feeding of the Hideaway crew.

An Alta Vista view as I made way into Barretto.
No other customers were there when I arrived, and Joy told me I was only the third customer of the day. I honestly don’t know how much longer this place will be able to stay in business.
Six hungry mouths to feed. I was doing the math, and said six gals making 300 pesos per day and only three customers…Joy corrected me and said we only make 200 pesos daily. Hmm, the bar is open from eleven a.m. until seven p.m., so that’s less than fifty cents per hour. I felt so bad that I bought them all a lady drink so they could earn a seventy-peso commission.
Eat, drink, and be merry Joyful.

Next up for me was the Sunday dinner with Swan at John’s place. As soon as we sat down, she told the waitress, “Birria tacos, please.” Imagine the look of disappointment on Swan’s face when she was told they weren’t available. I don’t remember what she ordered instead, some stewed meat dish with rice, but it was not what she had been craving. I plan to surprise her with a visit to Myleen’s this week to get her birria fix.

I enjoyed my pulled pork.

We changed things up after dinner, stopping in at the seldom-visited Annex Bar. I secured the highway-facing table I prefer and was entertained watching the near misses in the heavy Sunday evening traffic. When it was time to move on, we went next door to Candy Bar. It was only our second-ever visit, and I was impressed to see dancers in matching outfits putting effort into their performance. Maybe they’ll participate in a future Battle of the Bars. Swan knew a couple of the waitresses, and my old friend from Cheap Charlies, Nerissa, was working, so we tabled them up and bought a round of lady drinks.

Party hardy!

We popped into Wet Spot next for our nightcap.

The recently deceased Art Miller was being taken on a final bar crawl.
Art’s ashes were deposited this morning in his final resting place, the dirty waters of Subic Bay. Rest in Peace.

I was glad to have lived through another day, and I’m going to keep trying for more as long as I am able.

Not bad for an elderly man, right?

I’ve progressed to October 2013 in the LTG archives. In this post, I wrote about watching my daughter’s induction into the Pelion High School Hall of Fame. Being a proud daddy was a special time in my life.

Today’s YouTube video is also from the LTG archives. It features a trail I won’t be hiking in this lifetime. Hell, I won’t even do it in my “do-over” life.

Humor me, please.

Yeah, been there, done that.
That’s a little too cheesy and full of holes, isn’t it?
The truth will set you free!

We have a typhoon headed this way, and it’s a rainy motherfucker outside. Today’s Hash will be a wet one for sure. The Hare, Leech My Nuggets, has already abandoned the mountainous Kalaklan trail he had planned and is substituting a Barretto street walk in its place. I plan to participate, but the weather may dictate just how far I’m willing to go. I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow.

  1. Dad is listening to his daughter say her prayers before bedtime: “God bless mommy and God bless daddy and God bless grandma and…… goodbye grandpa.”
He asks her – why did you say that?
I don’t know, I just felt like saying it.
The next day, grandpa drops dead. Wow, thinks dad, that’s an odd coincidence.

A month later at bedtime, the daughter says – God bless mommy and daddy. And goodbye grandma.
Sure enough, the next day grandma breathes her last earthly breath.

The dad realizes this is more than a coincidence, but he is not sure what to do. He doesn’t want to disturb his wife by telling her (Grandma and grandpa were her parents). Months go by and one night the man is listening to his daughter saying her prayers at bedtime – God bless mommy….she turns her head and looks straight at him – and goodbye daddy. What!? are you sure honey? She nods. The man’s heart begins racing and he breaks out in a sweat. He is so upset, he can’t sleep at all that night.

The next day he goes off to work, but locks himself in his office. He takes the phone off the hook, cancels all his meetings and awaits the inevitable. He stays at work past 5 because he feels secure there. He watches the hours tick by. Finally it is midnight and, drenched in sweat, he realizes he has cheated death. He drives home drenched in sweat and with all his nerves frazzled.

His wife is up and waiting for him – Where the hell were you today??! He replies – Don’t shout, I’ve had an absolutely miserable day. His wife then says – You had a miserable day? I’m the one who had a miserable day! First, the milkman drops dead on the steps…

  2. oh john, I left because your right wing nut friends kept making threats to me and my family. I told you this but you seem to have ignored it just like you ignore your friends when they say they find your stuff abhorrent. perhaps your “friends” who have ‘disappeared ‘have also had enough and just done the same? keep encouraging the threats tho.

  3. re: politics
John Mc – I am pretty much a centrist and I find it laughable (in a sad sort of way) to see the various political memes and think that there are people that believe that one side or the other has some sort of moral superiority over the other side. The right is just as guilty as the left and vice versa.

The right complains about Hunter Biden making a couple of million trading in on his father’s name. The left says “nothing to see here.” Donald Trump Jr’s net worth has increased from ~$50MM to $500MM in the course of the past year and no-one on the right seems to bat an eye. “Nothing to see here.”

I need to start a centrist party. The primary system and election system are so stacked against a third party that I am sure it will never happen.

  4. Brian, I’d be curious to learn the positions a centrist takes. Where do you stand on illegal immigrants? Do you think biological males who claim to be women should invade female only spaces? Were you bothered by the corruption discovered in USAID? I’m against all those things and I think I’m a centrist politically. Do you agree?

Comparing Hunter to Donald Jr. seems like a stretch. Do you have any info on how he allegedly gained that wealth? Bribes? Insider trading? If you mean most investors are doing much better these days, then yeah. But now do AOC. How does a former bartender on a Congressional salary become a multimillionaire?

Like it or not, MAGA resonates with the majority of Americans. As long as that is the case, I don’t see a third party succeeding. Although, if the centrists like yourself rejected the leftist tropes, there may be room in the tent.

  5. Okay, John. I went back and looked at the comments on those Facebook posts of mine. No threats of violence or personal attacks against you. I did find these:

“No, better to just slag them off without them knowing, like a real man hey. Don’t worry, ill stop before you right wing snowflakes cancel me as well.”

“Keep up the hate john, its really becomingNice blog post john, way to listen to your “friends” instead of perhaps wondering why people are offended by the racist, hateful shit you post, you, blame everyone else. What a man.”

“Your the one putting the hate out! Jesus, you’re thick, and brave! Retired postman living overseas calling for war and violence! Pathetic, letting others do the fighting again i see.”

Those are all from you. No one else took the bait.

  6. >Brian, I’d be curious to learn the positions a centrist takes.

I guess I would describe myself as fiscally conservative and socially liberal. Thinking about it, maybe this skews toward libertarianism.

    >Comparing Hunter to Donald Jr. seems like a stretch. Do you have any info on how he allegedly gained that wealth?

I dont think it is a stretch. One example, crypto. Don Jr. holds $hundreds of millions in Trump crypto. Do you really think that the launching and increase in price (knowing that Don Jr. basically got it for free) of Trump crypto is some sort of legitimate operation unconnected to the fact that his father is president?

    Getting back to Trump crypto/memecoins:
    >More than 813,000 crypto wallets have lost a total of $2 billion after buying President Donald Trump’s memecoin, according to an assessment by Chainalysis. Meanwhile, the Trump Organization and its partners gained $100 million in trading fees. Since its Jan. 17 launch, $TRUMP has lost most of its value, which is now about $16 per share, down from its $75 peak.

I agree with some of President Trumps policies, but I think he is an asshole and a despicable human. No president and family has enriched themselves more using the office of President than Trump. I think it is a sad commentary that most people on the right seem to give this a free pass. “Oh, that is just Trump being Trump”

Other examples of enrichment: Trump phones, Trump coins, Trump NFT’s, Trump perfume, Trump crypto, Melania NFT, Trump watches, trading cards, $2B investment by the Saudis into a fund run by his son, etc. all done since he became president

I think you are a smart guy and generally pretty fair minded, but not seeing/believing how the Trump family uses the office of the President to enrich themselves is just wearing blinders.

Bringing up the other side (AOC, etc.). Both sides are guilty. As I stated above, saying that one side or the other has some sort of moral superiority is laughable. I have a problem with either side doing it. Both sides suck.

Imagine back to your days when you were working with the 8th Army. If you (or your family) used that association to generate personal financial gain, what do you think would have happened? Jee Yeun opens up some sort of commercial establishment (store/restaurant, whatever) and prominently indicates that her husband works closely with the 8th Army and has a picture of you and the commanding general displayed. No issues?

Anyways, life will go on, the sun will come up, hikes will be walked, and beers will be drunk regardless of who is in charge. LOL

  7. Brian, should illegal immigrants be deported? Should men who identify as women compete in women’s sports? It is issue like those that are losing middle American for the dems.

I know nothing about crypto, Trump’s or otherwise. But I’m not hearing you claim anything illegal about Jr.’s involvement. The Trumps were rich to begin with, that not need to lie, steal, or cheat for money. But the stupidest Congress-critter (and that’s a low bar) somehow manages to become a multimillionaire since being elected. Hmm…

It never crossed my mind to violate the rules when I worked for the government, and if I had, I would expect the consequences for my dishonesty.

“Anyways, life will go on, the sun will come up, hikes will be walked, and beers will be drunk regardless of who is in charge. LOL”

See? We have found some common ground! I’m just glad I’m not living there.

  8. >Brian, should illegal immigrants be deported?
Yes. I am a big fan of legal immigration. That is the only thing keeping the US population stable. Without immigration, we would be like Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Italy, etc that are going to be in a world of hurt in 25-50 years.
However, the crackdown on illegals will have consequences. Restaurant prices, grocery prices, etc. That being said, I do agree with it.

    >Should men who identify as women compete in women’s sports?
No. But I do think that this issue is way outsized in amount of newsprint vs. the reality. I read somewhere that in college athletics, the % of trans athletes is ~0.01%. In HS, it is somewhere around 0.1%.

So, should they be competing? NO
Is it as big as problem as it was made out to be? NO

    >It is issue like those that are losing middle American for the dems.
Agree. The republicans did a very good job of picking subjects that resonated and the stupid democrats doubled down on their positions.

As in the past few elections, it was more that the losing candidate snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, rather than the other side actually winning.

    >I know nothing about crypto, Trump’s or otherwise. But I’m not hearing you claim anything illegal about Jr.’s involvement.

Yeah, but there was nothing illegal about Hunter Biden being named to the board of that one company. If general if the other tribe does something shady, it is “OMG, look at that!!!” If it is (generic) my tribe, it is “may not be morally good and is in a gray area, but all is good.”

    >It never crossed my mind to violate the rules when I worked for the government, and if I had, I would expect the consequences for my dishonesty.

If it was a rule that you or your family could not use your office/position to enrich themselves, then why should it be different for the President and his family, or any member of congress and their families? Do you really think that the Saudis would have invested $2B in an investment fund run by President Trumps son if he wasnt President Trumps son? LOL. Again, both sides suck equally.

    >“Anyways, life will go on, the sun will come up, hikes will be walked, and beers will be drunk regardless of who is in charge. LOL”

    >See? We have found some common ground! I’m just glad I’m not living there.

Yup!! Cheers. I will be at a virtual street side seat with you and will lift a virtual beer (or three) and remember what is really important!! 🙂

  9. Brian, we are pretty much in sync on the issues. I don’t think I’ve moved right all that much over the years, but the left has gone batshit crazy.

Yep, beer may not solve the world’s problems, but it makes them easier to ignore.

  10. john, unlike me, I dont hide my comments, your coward friends, like chris b, send me abusive messages privately and then block me before I can respond. Am sure you will twist this into my fault so whatever, I enjoy being taught morality by a sex tourist, keep it up.
