And what I ate wasn’t bad either.
In what seems like is becoming a new Saturday tradition, Swan needed to go to the Subic Marketplace to purchase sweets for the Candy Walk. I needed to get some steps in, so this little piggy hiked to the market. I’ve had enough of highway walking, so to the extent possible, we took backroads through different neighborhoods. And Swan handed out biscuits and lollipops along the way.
And then evening rolled around. The plan was to do The Maze Bar Hop, so we kicked things off by having dinner at Jewel Cafe.
The steak was small, but tasty, and I ate it up with pleasure.
And now for the bar hop that wasn’t. The flyer said it kicked off at 7:00 p.m. at Sloppy Joe’s. We arrived there a bit after six and waited for things to get started. I passed the time with some beers. A little after seven, a group came in and went to a table in the back. There was no greeting or invite, so I went back to see what was happening. My presence wasn’t acknowledged, and I didn’t feel like I was welcome. Weird, I know. It turns out that the bar hop group had all met at Wet Spot, and then Sloppy Joe’s was the first stop. That was my misunderstanding. Since I hadn’t joined in at Wet Spot, they must not have known why I was there. Okay, well, I figured I’d go to stop #2, Green Room, and perhaps join when they arrived. So, more drinks while waiting. When it got to 7:30, and no bar hoppers had arrived, I asked the Green Room manager what was up. He told me they had changed the bar order, and Green Room was now the fourth destination. So, I shrugged and thought, oh well, it was just not meant to be.
It was 8 o’clock, I’d had eight beers, and that was enough. We called our trike driver and headed on home.
Here’s what those eights added up to yesterday:
So, the calorie app I’m using set my goal at 2317 daily calories. One of my smart readers suggested 1800 as a more aggressive target. When I tried to change the goal on the app, it said this:
I found a basal metabolic rate calculator on the internet and plugged in my stats. It says my BMR is 1996 calories per day. My results are at the link above, but I’m honestly confused now. I’m feeling fine at less than 1800 calories per day. I guess I need to do more research.
A memory from this day in 2017:
I posted this eight years ago after Trump was elected the first time:
And as long as we are talking politics, this seems apt:
Saw a post today where Tucker Carlson claims Mitch McConnel is plotting a Senate leadership vote with the intention of undermining Trump. I’ll need to read more about that before weighing in, but it sounds like something a RINO would do.
Today’s YouTube video is from a vlogger I’ve never watched before, Smart Girl Philippines. She was kind of fun to watch, at least for this six minutes about avoiding “traps” in the PI. Nothing wrong with her advice, it’s all pretty much common sense.
Let’s see if I can get a laugh out of you:
Okay, on with the Sunday routines…hungry girls at Hideaway, dinner with Swan at John’s, and then, we’ll see. Read all about it here tomorrow.
Glad to see you have your traditions and routines, John. I like to keep mine simple. Wake up. Have a glass of water or two for hydration. Smoke on the porch and let Morgoth the Third out. Have a drink or six. Pass out. Wake up, drink some more. Pass out again. Wake up. Drink some more, but there’s enough alcohol in my system now that I don’t need to head straight off to bed. Sponge out in front of the computer for hours. Head to the local gas station for booze, after sunset. Carry on drinking until I’m nodding off and my eyelids are closing at my desk. Take myself off to bed to sleep for the night. Rinse and repeat.
Cheers!
…so to the extent possible, we took backroads through different neighborhoods.
Do you use a map app to navigate, or do you know all of the streets and local trails by now? I imagine you do. Are there apps available for newbies, or is it just Google Maps?
I asked the Green Room manager what was up. He told me they had changed the bar order, and Green Room was now the fourth destination.
How did this get communicated such that everyone else knew, but you didn’t? Are you being shut out? Are you not on some kind of phone tree or something? Communication between expats and natives is a huge problem in Korea, as you know. Expats always end up learning things last because no one ever bothers to tell them anything.
Saw a post today where Tucker Carlson claims Mitch [McConnell] is plotting a [Senate-leadership] vote with the intention of undermining Trump. I’ll need to read more about that before weighing in, but it sounds like something a RINO would do.
McConnell, his fellow RINO-neocons, and the Dems are doing their stupid best to “Trump-proof” the White House. Biden will do his best to break all the toys on the way out. A lot will happen between now and January 20. Much unnecessary waste will have to be undone in the first month.
Top pick for Senate Majority Leader is Rick Scott, but there are rumblings of an attempt to give the spot to JD Vance, who will already be VP and president of the Senate. This would make Vance more directly involved in influencing policy decisions.
From what I’m hearing, Rick Scott is a good and popular pick. but along with the Vance thing (way-back precedent: John Adams, who was also VP and majority leader), some people are rooting for Ron Paul. At present, neither Vance nor Paul is in the running for the seat, so Scott is the likely new head. At least he won’t be a GOPe obstructionist.
re: “adopted parents” meme
I’m pretty sure the kid didn’t adopt the new parents; those parents are adopting him, i.e., to the kid, these are adoptive parents.

Kev, I’m pretty much accustomed to the backstreets in this area. I’ll still make a wrong turn now and then, but I don’t get lost. I’m not sure about map apps; I’ve never used them. I enjoy getting out of town and exploring new areas (with a group) where everything has a fresh feel.
The mistake with the bar hop is on me. I heard that one was taking place and saw the announcement on Facebook. I should have asked where the meet-up would be. And I should have asked the group that arrived at Sloppy Joe’s to join in, but didn’t. That’s just me being me.
You’d think that politicians would be more in tune with the will of the people, especially after a Trump landslide. But that’s why Republicans never achieve much, I suppose–their loyalty is to the good ol’ boy system. Scott would be okay as the leader, but damn, it would be a dream to see Vance in that role.
Hadn’t picked up on that “adoptive parents” miswrite until you mentioned it. Sloppiness abounds!
Nice to hear from you again, Thompson. I was just wondering the other day how you were doing.
There is nothing wrong with routines, as long as you enjoy them. My life is like a calendar of routines. Your daily adventures wouldn’t work for me, but you do you and be happy!
