Yesterday’s Hash trail wasn’t so bad except for that first climb. Steep and slick, just the way I hate it. I made it to the top, though, so there’s that. And someday I may look back and miss those days when I could still drag my sorry ass up into the hills. Live it while you got it!

There was some sad news from the Puerto Galera Anniversary Hash this weekend. Several Subic hashers attended the event, as did the Corona Hash group from Angeles City. A Corona hasher brought along her boyfriend, who had never hiked a Hash trail before. Apparently, he didn’t come prepared and collapsed during a climb early on the trail. Efforts were made to revive and comfort him, and eventually, a rescue team carried him down on a stretcher and then transported him to a local hospital. That’s where he died. Honestly, I’ve always been surprised there aren’t more casualties amongst the Hash participants. Count your blessings, drink plenty of water, proceed with caution, and hope to live to see another Hash is how I roll.
In other news, Swan made me another Filipino breakfast burrito yesterday.

In this post from the June 2014 LTG archives, I recount a journey I made to Songtan (south of Seoul), where I participated in a dart tourney. I find it shocking that a mere eleven years ago, I was staying out in party mode until 3:30 in the morning. I’ve become such a lightweight in my old age. And yeah, I still miss the good ol’ days in Korea.
Let’s check in with the Filipina Pea for her thoughts on some common misconceptions foreigners bring with them to the Philippines. Well, it is what it is, and I’m still here, going on eight years now, so I reckon the good outweighs the bad. You either learn to live with the downsides or you leave.
Let’s get the funny business out of the way:

And that’s all I’ve got for today.
He wrecked it.
Meanwhile…
Her (with a Darth Vader voice): Impressive. Most impressive.
Steep and slick, just the way I hate it.
Not what she said, I imagine.
Our marathoners were once again leading the pack.
Wow, so these are the ladies who actually run the whole trail every time?
Overall: nice hike, nice view. Congrats to Swan on 55.

I hope the Hasher doesn’t blame herself for the death. The boyfriend made his choice and took his chances. I wonder what kind of shape he’d been in.
The innards.
While the fusion burrito looks nice, I’d love a description of the innards since you can’t really tell what’s inside. That’s one skill I need to improve as well: food photography.
re: Pea
She sounds Westernized enough to resent the intrusiveness of noise and relatives.
Re: Dead hasher
Did at @Kevin Kim style walk this past weekend. ~42km doing the GreenCircleTrail.org that encircles Stevens Point, WI. Made it through the walk with no problem (8.5 hours total time). Went back to the hotel with no problem. Walked the short distance to a pub/restaurant okay. Enjoying a beer at the bar, started feeling light headed and the next thing I knew, I was on the floor (and not because of alcohol). LOL. 99% sure it was dehydration. Day was relatively cool, so didnt feel sweaty and definitely didn’t drink enough. Fortunately, all’s well that ends well, but lesson learned.
Re: PI burrito
What are the ingredients? Looks good. I like burritos/wraps. Is the difference between a burrito and wrap mainly that the burrito is fried?
Brian, Wow! 42K is definitely Kim-like impressive. Dehydration is a funny thing; it apparently hits you with little to no warning. I always carry water with me, but I don’t always drink it. Maybe I need to start drinking some at regular intervals. Anyway, I’m glad you didn’t suffer any damage. I had a bar blackout once (no, I wasn’t drunk either) and wound up with stitches in my head.
I’ll defer to the experts on what distinguishes a wrap from a burrito. I know my “burritos” are more like soft
tacos. Anyway, Swan tells me this is what she puts in her burrito:
longanisa (Filipino sausage)
sweet corn
rice
lettuce
tomato
onion
cheese
Spanish paprika
burrito seasoning mix
Kevin, yes, he made it so hard on her.
The gal in the middle, Fast and Loose, is the fastest Hasher in our kennel, although Leech My Nuggets can give her a run for the money. The other two ladies are also impressive on the trail. They are always WAY ahead of me, but other than the steep climbs, I’m sure they are running.
Yeah, I don’t know all the details about the guy who died, but one of the Subic Hashers told me the guy didn’t have any water with him and that when he offered to share his, the offer was declined. I, too, hope that the girlfriend, Clam In A Cam, doesn’t feel responsible for what happened. He chose to participate, and the consequences are on him.
I don’t know much about the Pea’s personal story, but she’s been in the USA for some time now. Maybe she notices how much quieter it is there. People would be arrested back home for disturbing the peace if they made noise like they do here. Almost eight years later, I still find it shocking.
I listed the ingredients of Swan’s burrito in the response to Brian’s comment.
Good job on 42K, Brian. Yikes, I hope you took short breaks along the way. I’ve walked 42K, 44K, and 60K, but never without short breaks for drinks and/or snacks. One segment of my upcoming long walk is 40K. Sometimes, when we push ourselves, we come to realize certain things about our bodies, and we’re all wired differently. Like John, I’m glad you didn’t suffer any damage, and I’m glad you determined that hydration was the culprit. When the weather is warmer, I tend to bring along more water on long walks, but with the weather substantially cooling down now, I don’t need more than a single liter in the form of two 500-ml water bottles. Yay, microplastics!
@John @Kevin. Thanks. No damage. The friend I was with, she saw me start to fold up and was able to ease me down to the ground. Weird thing is that I had one of those “micro dreams” in the 30 seconds or so I was out of it.
I for sure drank more than 1 liter. Had a 20 oz water bottle with me and drank at least 40 oz. Can’t remember if I refilled it only once or twice.
As I said, lesson learned, so need to be more careful about staying hydrated and eating nuts, granola, M&M’s etc while on long walks. This was the furthest I have ever walked in one go. I have a “normal” walk I do around Lake Geneva (no, not the one in Switzerland, but in Wisconsin LOL) and that is a shade under 22 miles. I guess the extra 5 miles did me in.
Brian, when I blacked out, it was an oxygen issue. Given how much water you imbibed, I wonder if the problem was dehydration. Maybe you should consult a doctor to be sure.
Seriously, I’m so impressed with those distances you are able to walk. I don’t even have the balls to walk half that far.
