A feast amongst friends

Yesterday’s Thanksgiving gathering turned out to be a pleasant affair–plenty of good vittles and a comfortable outdoor venue at the community center. Oh, the people in attendance were nice too!

The bird before slicing and serving…
That’s my co-host Ed putting the food on the table as it were. In the foreground is my Aunt Pat’s recipe fruit salad. Most of it got eaten so I guess that’s pretty good feedback. I thought it came out well. The womenfolk and kids were crazy about the Choco Pies from Korea.
That’s the food table from the other side. The last three cans of cranberry in the Philippines for all we know. The ham was also quite tasty.
My first plate of grub. I had teasingly told Ed to save me a drumstick and when he brought it out of hiding I felt obligated to eat it. I do like dark meat, just prefer wings…
Here are some pics I didn’t take (I can tell because I’m in them). Like me loading up a plate with TG goodness.
Devouring my meal…
All that beer wasn’t gonna keep itself cold. And we consumed LOTS of beer.
The lady folks hanging out…
And all us manly men talking shit, Everyone got along though.
This is the other John (seated) at our party. He’s from Wales. For some reason I told him the song “Battle of New Orleans” was an American traditional Thanksgiving song. And then I proceeded to sing it to him (I may have been a little drunk by then). He was a good sport about it though, telling me that in the UK they celebrate Thanksgiving on July 4. I thought that was a worthy comeback!

Anyway, it was a great afternoon and everyone in attendance seemed to enjoy the food and the company. I’m thankful for that!

(It’s odd that as bad as my memory is getting I still remembered the lyrics to this song)

In 1814 we took a little trip
Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans
And we caught the bloody British in a town in New Orleans

We fired our guns and the British kep a-comin’
There wasn’t nigh as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they begin to runnin’
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

We looked down a river
And we see’d the British come
And there must have been a hundred of’em
Beatin’ on the drums
They stepped so high
And they made their bugles ring
We stood by our cotton bales
And didn’t say a thing

We fired our guns and the British kep a-comin’
There wasn’t nigh as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they begin to runnin’
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

Old Hickory said we could take ’em by surprise
If we didn’t fire our muskets
‘Till we looked ’em in the eyes
We held our fire
‘Till we see’d their faces well
Then we opened up our squirrel guns
And really gave ’em – well we

Fired our guns and the British kep a-comin’
There wasn’t nigh as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they begin to runnin’
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

Yeah, they ran through the briars
And they ran through the brambles
And they ran through the bushes
Where the rabbit couldn’t go
They ran so fast
That the hounds couldn’t catch ’em
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

We fired our cannon ’til the barrel melted down
So we grabbed an alligator and we fought another round
We filled his head with cannon balls, and powdered his behind
And when we touched the powder off the gator lost his mind

We fired our guns and the British kep a-comin’
There wasn’t nigh as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they begin to runnin’
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

Yeah, they ran through the briars
And they ran through the brambles
And they ran through the bushes
Where the rabbit couldn’t go
They ran so fast
That the hounds couldn’t catch ’em
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

  1. Great-looking feast! The turkey looked quite good.

And for what it’s worth, since you’re always commenting about your beer belly: it appears, from the above photos, that the belly has rather significantly slimmed down, so whatever you’re doing seems to be working. Enjoy that Turkey Day feast, then get back on your program!

Thanks for the pics and the commentary.

  2. Looking good. Bevy of beauties too. No masks? Great pictures.! Just me, wife, and her sister for TG.

Code Red here. I think there are 10 levels. Restaurants closed. My sister and brother in law have Covid-19. Sister stayed at home. She is a tough old broad and beat cancer and has pretty much beat this. Took her some bleach and disinfectants so she can get her house sanitized and found her in the pasture exercising one of her horses. Brother in law was in ICU for 4 days, but now its looks like he has beat it to. Pretty bad here. Hospitals have no room.

On a lighter side??? first In-N-Out in CS opened last week. Idiots waited in an 8 hour line to get just a drippy hamburger.

    Take care

  3. Thanks, Kev. The only credit I get for the turkey is buying it. I had planned to oven roast, but Ed has a method where he cooks it on his charcoal grill. Came out great!

As to the belly, wearing a baggy shirt helps hide it. I did lose a few pounds, not sure it came off the midsection though. Sunday is weigh-in day so we’ll see how much damage this week has done!

Jerry, glad your family members are recovering. Life here gets a little closer to normal every day and we haven’t seen the spike in cases you are experiencing. Saw that In and Out story on the internet–people must really be bored there! Stay safe.
