No, he didn’t die or anything that dramatic, but this chapter of his life in Korea has drawn to a close. As Dave says, his 12+ years here were a nice run.
As is our tradition, we honored Dave with a going away darts tournament. And did not let him win it (I think that would be back luck or something). I can attest to the fact that it was a good time and Dave had many friends and well-wishers present from both his darting and photography worlds.
Dave holding court with some of his buds..
It was good to see Jeese, his wife Kyung Mi and Grant out for the festivaties.
And of course two of my favorite Canucks of the female persuasion, Margaret and Becky. You know, I don’t know if my fat fingers are blocking the flash or what. Anyway, sorry for the poor quality of these shots.
Dave and Alisteir the Scot talking over darts strategy. Hell, I don’t know what the really really discussing, but its a nice lead-in for this “incident” that occurred during the tourney.
So, to begin, Alisteir is currently the top ranked player in SIDL, and deservedly so. But his cricket strategy is considered by most somewhat unorthodox. I mean, obviously it works for him but he catches a fair amount of flack about it. An example was during our first meeting on Saturday.
Here’s the situation: I had foolishly left 20s open by throwing a 2 mark. My partner had closed 19s, so when Alisteir stepped up to the oche they had 20s closed and zero 19s. His first dart was at the 20 for points which is a smart dart. He hit a triple which is all the better. His next dart was another triple 20, which gave them a 120 point lead. Alisteir’s third dart was another triple 20–a ton-80 for points.
Ok, I was somewhat irked, maybe even a bit miffed, and perhaps a little peeved at this turn of events. As much at myself for leaving 20s open to begin with as I was at Alisteir for rubbing my nose in it. Conventional wisdom would be to take one dart for points and then work the open 19. But that’s not the way Alisteir plays, and he made the point afterwards that when he’s on a number, he prefers to stay there.
Well, my partner and I fought back the best we could and closed the gap, but that 180 points proved to be insurmountable. So, we exchanged some words after the match and I made some comments that were clearly out of line, because I took it personal. Alisteir correctly noted that he plays that way against everyone and if anything I should take it as a sign of respect. He pointed out that I’m the only one who’s swept him 3-0 in a league match. He was right of course, and I apologized. I don’t agree with his strategy, but if you fail to close a number, you are responsible for the consequences. Anyway, I don’t usually let emotions flare up like that and I felt bad about it afterwards. I certainly bear no grudge and hope Alisteir does not as well.
Anyway, the night was all about Dave anyway and I did have a good time. Even took a second place in the follow-up tourney (losing out again to Alisteir, but there is no shame in that).
Dave will certainly not be forgotten:
This wall at Dolce Vita is devoted to photographs Dave took of some of Dolce’s regulars. To really appreciate his talent with the camera, go here.
I guess his cake expresses the sentiments we all feel as Dave moves on to new challenges:
Farewell and good luck. Hope our paths cross again someday.
John, did you find out where Dave is going to? If he is coming to this area, please give him my contact information. thanks “old man”
As a matter of fact he is going to DC.
Dennis:
Sometimes I do have to wonder? It is obvious that John and Fortuneate are friends. As well as Duke. They know eachothers birthdays. Nothing wrong with friends sharing greetings and well wishes. The “Cash for Codgers” along with “all my ex’s” should have been a clue as to the gender. Yes the conversation has been all over the board. Cap & Trade, Health Care, Associations and over-all Agenda. But, hey, we can multitask. Since my news sources have also been questioned I’ll address that first. I don’t get the paper nor watch alot of TV myself. I goto the web sites for CNN, MSNBC and FoxNews. In my view CNN is the most liberal. MSNBC is more to the middle but, leans left. FOX is definately conservative. Sometimes articles do send me to blogs but, they are typically journalists blogs. This is Beck’s show from last night (printed version).

As I stated before…Connect the dots. Obama clearly has lied about his association with Bill Ayers. Ira Einhorn, the “Unicorn”. The founder of Earth Day. (At least the master of ceremonies at the first globally televised Earth Day) as-in “Global Warming”. His comtemporaries? Jerry Ruben and Abbey Hoffman. He killed his girl friend stuffed her in a trunk. Got arrested. Got out on a $40k bail bond and fled the country. His attorney? Arlen Specter. After closed door meetings with Obama, Specter becomes a Democrat. After Einhorn was finally found in France in 1997. He fought extradition and lost. He got a life sentence. Specter was the attorney who fought extradiction. Obama says in his own book that while at Harvard he made sure to associate himself with Marist professors. Eric Holder the AG. He’s the guy that got Marc Rich ($48,000,000 tax evasion) pardoned by Clinton. Holder said I had no involment. Oh but, you were the one who wrote the request. “Oh, I forgot about that”. Now today I see that they arrested Hassan Nemazee at the Newark airport trying to flee the country to Rome. He got a loan for $74,000,000 with fraudulent paperwork. Who is Namazee? He was Hillary Clintons’ Finance Chairman for her primary run. Then Finance Chair for Obamas’ presidential run and a bundler for Obamas’ inauguration. He’s presently Finance Chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. In 2006 he helped the DSCC raise $115,000,000. Where did he graduate? Harvard.
This is enough to make my head hurt. Conspiracy? You can’t make all this up. To much time on my hands? Most of this has been known for years. I do not trust a thing this man says.
I don’t see a conspiracy (conspiracy to do what?) so much as I see it as further proof, if any was needed, that power corrupts. Oh, I do not include in that attorney’s who are doing a job that they were paid to do.
Much more difficult than proving that a president or member of Congress has questionable associates would be finding one that didn’t. Most people have interacted at one time or another in their lives with a person with a shady past or present. It does not make one guilty by association with that person’s sins and ommissions. You are moving way beyond the biblical born in sin by virtue of being the descendants of Adam and Eve or the prevalent third world cultural beliefs of tainted by the deeds of one’s ancestors to being tainted by people you have met or had business dealings with or worked with or belong to the same board of directors etc. Its ridiculous.
I am responsible for my actions not my families or friends or associates or coworkers no one but myself unless of course I aided and abetted them in the transmission of their bad deed. The same holds true for you and Obama.
This sort of thing is absolutely fruitless. You don’t like Obama. You didn’t before Michele Malkin or Glenn Beck started “connecting the dots.” The muckraking, for that is what it is, is intended to draw attention away from serious debate on policy issues, to discredit the President so that regardless of what his message might be the audience will not listen. It doesn’t work. The only people who buy in to this stuff are those who already dislike the man. To those that did or those willing to wait to judge him on his actions this type of thing simply doesn’t resonate. What it really accomplishes is line the pockets of the mudslingers and divide the country to hard liners on the fringe. Its getting old.
John,
Thanks for the write up. Going to miss you guys.
Duke,
Heading back to the DC area.
