Before I read the Wikipedia explanation, I had taken the Madonna-whore complex to refer men’s desire for women who are a combination of virginal/pure and utterly slutty. This would explain men’s attraction to younger, doe-eyed women who look innocent, but who might be ready to do (insert, munch, lick, suck, etc.) anything in the bedroom.

Yeah, that parenthetical (“pretend to be”) is a necessary modifier, given what I’ve learned about Filipinas from your blog, and from the lengthening trail of relationship wreckage behind you. Those Pinay chicks seem to be about as cold and as calculating as the Korean women you’ve known. But as I’ve said, you meet a certain quality of woman when you frequent a certain type of place. Upgrade your haunts, and you’ll upgrade your women. (Unless you likes ’em skanky, which I kinda suspect you do!)

Yikes—leakage inside the house? Can the land be re-landscaped to divert downward-flowing water around your place? Drainage is serious business; here in Korea, there are all sorts of poorly designed walkways next to buildings for which drainage is a problem. In the short term, it might not be a big issue, but in the long term, a leaky, damaged foundation is hellishly expensive to repair. Better to do preventive maintenance now.
Anyway, great pics of the greenery and the terrain and the shanty shacks. I saw shacks like that during my walk—even took a few pics of them. Good luck to those who Hash your path!

I’d heard the sheep/sheepdog/wolf thing in other contexts, so I knew something was up. Plus, the prose sounds suspiciously modern and doesn’t match the musicality of biblical verse.
The community center looks to be an awesome venue for get-togethers. It is a community center, after all! I hope the Hash and the after-party (or whatever the proper Hash term is) both go well. Good luck plotting out paths and prepping for parties.

I saw that “outpost” photo and, completely unbidden, a question popped into my head: how do you all handle pooping while on the trail? Just move off to a discreet (ahem) part of the woods and drop your bombs? Or tough it out until you’re On-Home? I can see the latter solution being the more popular one: these walks are short enough to endure a poop urge. I’ve had moments on my various Incheon-Busan walks where I’ve held off for ten kilometers or more until I reached civilization… or at least a decent porta-potty. Best solution for me: manage the rhythm of my intestines so that poop urges don’t happen while I’m on the trail!

Sorry about your lame darts partner. Always sucks when such people don’t take good advice. I remember watching “Top Shot,” Season 2, where one of the contestants was a golf instructor in his regular life, and when the other veteran shooters tried to give him advice on his shooting stance, he’d always reply that he knew what he was doing, thanks. Arrogant twat eventually got knocked out of the contest, but even in his exit interview, he wasn’t at all reflective or repentant: he simply talked about how proud he was to have bested more than half the shooters before being eliminated. Some people just don’t have the capacity to learn, and they think they’re doing A-OK. Dunning-Kruger.

A Google search of your fruit image turns up a promising result: it’s called the amla in Hindi, or the Indian gooseberry (which also comes in lime-green varieties), and possibly the bangkiling karamay in Tagalog. The fruit can be golden, green, red, or even grape-purple. See here. The Latin designation is Phyllanthus acidus.

I know your theory is that the problem lies with much of the American populace, but I think what we’re seeing, in terms of skewed voting numbers, has more to do with the actions of a malicious few who put their vote-harvesting plans in place and then acted on them. It could be that the left as a whole agrees with the actions of the malicious few (like the idea of mainstream Muslims quietly agreeing with the agenda of Islamist extremists), but in terms of the actual bad actors, I’d say they’re in the minority. For what it’s worth. Of course, this is part of a much, much larger discussion that would occupy a lot more than just this comment thread, so I’ll just stop here.

Another American perspective here. From afar, as I’ve learned in conversation with European interlocutors, Democrats and Republicans look and sound the same, and everything seems minor and petty—small differences in degree, not in kind. I’ve heard some Europeans scoff at what we Yanks call “socialism,” saying that whatever is happening in America is a far cry from real socialism. I beg to differ, and I temper the European criticism with the knowledge that, were I to say something like “Labour and the Tories are basically the same to me,” I’d be accused of lacking nuance. We see things from our own perspective, and a far-off perch makes all problems both smaller and less significant. My point: for us Yanks, this election is urgent, dead-serious business. Yes, I agree that America will survive whatever happens over the coming weeks, and if Biden ends up in the Oval Office, we’ll survive that, too. But such a path seems consistent with a deadly downward trajectory that some thinkers, like the one I linked to above, have been talking about for years. (Malcolm and I are no longer on speaking terms, but his intelligent blog is worth a read. I respect his mind even if I don’t like his character.)

Well, you could be at least partially right. I just blogged that Trump isn’t going to win by a landslide, although he does seem to be on course to win. This seems to indicate that the “shy Trump voter” wasn’t nearly as numerous as previously thought, and it may also validate your sentiment that the average voter is stupider than s/he should be. It’s incredible to me that all four members of the Squad have been reelected, but yeah: people are idiots. America as a whole, however, isn’t so stupid as to vote Biden into office. (Although North Carolina and/or Georgia might make a liar out of me yet!)

Glad to know the typhoon didn’t hit hard where you were. Is it typhoon season now? I thought I saw a comment in which you said another storm was on the way. Man… there’s rainy season, then a brief reprieve, then typhoon season.
Then again, Wikipedia says:
“In the Philippine languages, tropical cyclones are generally called bagyo. Typhoons can hit the Philippines any time of the year, with the months of June to September being most active, with August being the most active individual month and May the least active.”
I wonder whether this year is an extended season. Anyway, good luck dealing with whatever the weather gods bowl your way.
