Well, congrats on winning at darts! The telephone pole in the middle of the road is hilarious; that visual joke—forms of which you’ve shown before on the blog—never gets old. And it’s such an apt metaphor for the local mentality. Are they planning to widen the road around the pole so people can easily drive around it?
Things are a bit more organized here in Korea, but not by much. As I’m sure you’ll remember, we have our own mess of sloppily poured concrete, helter-skelter telephone poles, clusters of power and computer cables cluttering up our view of the sky, instances of no city planning (as when an industrial zone is put next to a restaurant district or residential area), etc. It’s pretty insane. And yet, people somehow eke out a living. Just every once in a while, there’s a disaster that kills a bunch of folks, reminding us that safety standards can be lax, and corruption abounds. Otherwise, we sheeple prefer not to think too much about the precariousness of existence.
Continued good luck to your friend and her little resto. I hope she manages to swim, not sink. It’s a terrible time to be starting a business, with so many established businesses shutting down. But if your investment isn’t more than $1000, then any loss you take won’t be tragic. I normally assume you’re swimming in money, you government worker, you.

All the food looks good, and here I am, fasting on my final day of the Newcastle Diet. Ugh. Not sure where I can get a decent pecan pie where I live; I may have to make another one, but better this time. The last one was a little burned.
Sharting is an issue as you get older. I’ve had two incidents, in recent years, while I was in bed. I rolled myself to the side in time to save my mattress from being soiled, but the awkward scurry to the bathroom felt miserable. Even now, while I’m distance walking, I’ll occasionally have to stop myself from farting when I can feel a wet bubble forming in my ass. Luckily, the local paths all have plenty of decent restrooms, so if there’s ever an emergency, comfort is never far away.
Liberals don’t like the Saigon comparison, eh? Boo-fucking-hoo.

That’s how these fuck-ups happen. Like a friend of mine who wrote “kerfluffle,” which made me pause. I looked up “kerFUFFle,” and sure enough, “kerFLUFFle” is considered a legitimate alternative. But language often changes because someone mishears something, then that mistake propagates and becomes the rule. It’s happening right now with the word “overarching.” Increasingly, I’m hearing people mispronounce it as “overarcing.” Soon, “overarcing” will be a legitimate alternative. I don’t like it, but that’s how language often works. Same with people who say “homogenous” when they mean “homoGENEous.” “Homogenous” is now considered a legitimate alternative spelling and pronunciation. Or the changing pronunciation of “aFOREmentioned” (correct) to “AFFERmentioned” (currently still considered incorrect).
I’m sticking with “party hearty.” “Hardy” has to do with endurance, and if you need to endure a party, you’re not partying.

Great pics as always. Those climbs look horrible, even after all the stairs work I’ve done. That one muddy slope (the 13th image) looks as if it’d collapse under my weight. Those’re some dangerous routes.

“I love you” can be triggering in all the right ways, but it can also be impulsive and manipulative. Your story makes all of this seem rather sudden—more appropriate for a teenager who has learned little of the world than for a man of several marriages and many breakups and mishaps.

A week in the life: Wednesday Walkers
Educated and professional women who are single are rare commodities in these parts.
That may be true, but that may also be because of the circles you choose to travel in. Enlarge your circle, move beyond your beloved bars, and I bet you’ll find better women.
Am getting a “here we go again” vibe with Jessel. Charlie Brown once more runs at the football. But I also recognize you may not want more than what’s locally available. Personally, I think this dooms you to an ongoing cycle of the same thing over and over again, but some people like crafting their own little hells. Hell is hot and painful, but at least it’s familiar, and when you’re unwilling to leave your comfort zone, your personal hell is your best and, really, only option.
My opinion, of course. And my opinion notwithstanding, good luck Friday. I mean that sincerely. Jessel may be exactly what you say: a diamond in the rough. I hope she is, but I won’t be shocked if she isn’t.

A higher quality of woman, my friend. Aim for that. I notice a lot of white guys go overseas and end up with the trashy, easy local women. They (the guys) have no taste and can’t judge character, or they’re horny, and they just don’t care. If you’re looking for fluff, then fine—you do you. A fuck is a fuck, and a trailer-park skank will service you nicely. But if you’re looking for substance, the Julicas and Joys and other beggars of the world are not for you. Start off by finding an educated woman who is responsible, punctual, responsive in a timely way, can hold her own in a conversation, doesn’t play petty mind games, and who didn’t get pregnant out of wedlock (or abandoned by her guy) as part of a series of godawful-stupid life choices constantly made in the third world, where the poor often shoot themselves in the foot and keep themselves poor. Someone will call me racist for saying all that, but based on what I read on your blog, there are tons of women who fit that description, all to be avoided. Surely, there are better women out there.
Rooting for you. Look outside your normal circles. Assuming you know what you’re after.

Reflections on a Tuesday afternoon
Filipinas seem to profess love at the drop of a hat, and I get the feeling it’s usually more an attempt at manipulation than actual love. Actual love isn’t transactional; it’s about commitment, compromise, and even sacrifice. Sure, you could say there’s a quid-pro-quo dimension that seems transactional, but if that’s all love is, then love is just business. Prostitution.
I’ve said it before: you need to find a higher quality of woman who has the basics all in place, and that includes being responsible and mature enough to communicate in a timely manner. If you’re feeling jerked around, then I’d submit that whatever this is isn’t love. Overall, I think you’re right to be cautious in general; that video you posted a while back, featuring the Pinay talking about May-September relationships, strikes me as one of the most cynical videos I’ve seen on the subject of “love.”
M. Scott Peck said real love is an action, not a feeling. Feelings come and go. Actions are what demonstrate the virtues cited above, like commitment and sacrifice. And true love can only be seen over time. Love is also mutual, not just, “I want someone who will take care of me,” which is selfish. Loving people take care of each other, and as Peck says, they’re oriented toward cultivating each other’s spiritual growth. That’s the constructive aspect of love. There’s some quid-pro-quo there, but it’s more than that. (Peck hadn’t yet converted to Christianity when he wrote that thought, so he didn’t mean “spiritual” in a spooky, ethereal way.)
I admit I’m frankly skeptical as to whether this is love. I’m already seeing warning signs, “jerked around” being one of them. Whatever you do—and I can’t tell you what to do—be careful. You’ve been warned.

$200 per week is a lot for a single guy. $200-$300 a month is more reasonable, I should say. And with you eating out all the time, how could you possibly need to pay that much per week for groceries? Are you cooking meals that you’re not telling us about? I’m starting to feel cheated because I’m always on the lookout for food photos. Or is it that groceries really are that overpriced?
