It ain’t over yet

Appreciate the shout-out! And yeah, that dog is a mess.

I’ll leave you to your country music. Never been much of a fan.

Don’t go there

If she still wants to meet, I doubt she’s “haranguing” you. Harangues are normally negative. From your perspective, it’s more as if she were harassing you. But I thought she had stopped with the messaging. So she started up again? Either she’s really got the fire in the loins for you, or she truly believes you’re an easy mark.

Pushing the boundaries

We have another power-outage service notice plastered up in the form of little flyers all over our apartment building—each floor, every elevator. All in Korean. Months ago, I translated the signs and placed my translations next to the Korean signs, but by the next day, all my translations had been taken down. I stewed about this for a while, and then I realized my signs probably got taken down because you can’t put up any announcements without getting a stamp from the building’s admin office. I was still pissed off, but I had to concede that the reasoning was at least rational. So here we are, months later, with another power-outage announcement. The outage is happening tomorrow, and I’ll be on the east coast by the time it happens (just in time for the wispy edge of typhoon Chantu!). Too tired and too harried to do any translating this time, I’ve decided to just let it go. If foreigners who live in our building don’t know what’s going on, well, that’s on them. Good luck, guys!

I’m guessing that “two sides of the Filipino coin” refers to beautiful nature and ugly garbage. Yeah, we’ve got trash problems in Korea, too, especially out in the country, where people still burn their trash.

Thanks, as always, for the nice pics. Continued good luck with your eyes.

A CATastrophe

Good luck as your sight continues to improve.

As for “Pam” and her beau, well, this feels like one of those high-school scenarios. Surely you’re past that sort of shit.

Watch what you say

Small-town life, eh? Well, tread lightly, I guess. Karma has a way of sneaking up on you.

I have arguably more anonymity here in Korea; most Koreans can’t be bothered to slog through English-language websites. However, back when I worked at the Catholic University of Daegu, I got called onto the carpet three or so times by the native-speaker bosses for things I’d written on my blog. They were sensitive about that shit. Currently, I work with native speakers who know full well that I have a blog, but who can’t be bothered to read it every day. The Korean staff, meanwhile, doesn’t even know about the blog. Not that I spend time trashing them… they work in separate rooms, so I see them only on occasion, and we’re all on friendly terms.

Anyway, my asides aside, do be careful. Code names are acceptable, as are code words. A radio DJ that I used to listen to had all sorts of code names for sexual acts and bodily functions as a way to circumvent FCC regulations. “Cutting a slice” (pronounced “shlice”) meant “gettin’ some pussy.” “Gettin’ a snarlin'” meant receiving a blowjob, etc., etc. Start using idiosyncratic slang, and we’ll all catch on.

So many women, so little time

Well, a little cataract operation ain’t gonna stop you from bein’ a horndog. Johns gotta John! Be careful playin’ with fire.

Seeing eye-to-eye

“Was given the goggles pictured above and told to not touch my eye and to not get water in my eye for two weeks. I asked how I was going to shower and the response was ‘from the neck down.’ I guess I’m supposed to wash my hair in a sink, beauty parlor style (back to the sink). No idea how I’m going to pull that off. I’ll think of something.”

Easiest solution is probably to just shower normally but with your eyes closed, then keep them closed as you reach for your towel. Towel off your hair and face, and voilà.

Congrats on a successful surgery. They didn’t go in with a wide-bit drill and turn your eye into soup, so that’s good news. Now, on to a safe recovery!

Still alive

I’m imagining you typing all this while blindfolded.

Anyway, I’m glad you made it.

20 years on: Remembering 9/11

I appreciate the personal touch in your remembrance. Some of us, at least, will never forget.

Swab this, matey

Good luck with the surgery. May you see so well that you can look right through women’s clothing (God help you if you’re also able to look through men’s clothing).

I notice the PCR test-results form has your civil status as “married,” which is technically correct. You’ve plowed your way through a lot of women since you moved to the PI, so I’d say you’re lucky you haven’t been picked up for adultery which, as you point out, is illegal where you are. I know your argument about being “divorced in your heart,” but you and I both know that that means nothing in a court of law (assuming they take the law seriously in the PI; I get the impression that respect for the law is a case-by-case thing, and the foreigner always loses). Just get the divorce over with, man. Are the benefits of remaining married really worth it? You’ll be safer once divorced, and there’ll be no more Sword of Damocles hanging over your head every time you see another pretty Pinay ass. I worry for you.

That aside, good luck with the surgery. Post any gross pictures.

Getting sloppy wet with Jolina

“Anyway, stayed too long and had too many beers so early in the afternoon. Put me off schedule, hence yesterday’s abbreviated post.”

It’s good to go off-book once in a while. You’re normally pretty disciplined with your blogging; I usually know what time of day to expect your posts, just as I know most of your comments on my blog normally appear between 6 and 6:30 a.m. (although occasionally earlier!).

The aerial view of the route looks vaguely… I don’t know… otter-shaped? Salamander-shaped? I guess that’s better than dick-shaped.

Paula definitely looks cute, so I’m an old, creepy perv, too.

Brave of you all to walk that route in the rain, and 20K is mighty impressive, especially when the terrain isn’t flat. Then consider the heat, the humidity….

Regarding the mystery man at the bottom of your post: is that a shadow in the left photo, or did he piss himself? The woman next to him looks exasperated. Anyway, I’m sure you could switch out Biden for this guy, and the Dems wouldn’t even notice.

Did you see the latest about Biden joking at the end of a speech, “I’m supposed to stop and walk out of the room”? Here. He says it as if it were a joke, but this is apparently a joke he’s repeated so often that people are openly wondering about who controls the marionette strings. He’s also joked, in the past, by saying things like, “I’m not supposed to say anything, or I might get in trouble.” Get in trouble with whom? Color me curious.

Have fun following the bouncing ass. Just not too much fun.

Where does the time go?

Well, for what it’s worth, we’re all on the same road.

» Posted By Kevin Kim On 09/September/2021 @ 1:09 pm

It’s very strange to me because I just can’t relate to the mindset. I can see an erroneous sentence of yours and point it out to you by saying, “There are two comma errors in this sentence,” and you can immediately spot and correct the errors. So why isn’t that error-correction function switched on when you’re initially writing that sentence? You’re obviously savvy enough to know what’s wrong when I give you a mere hint. I can only conclude that you simply don’t like proofreading your prose while you’re writing. But why? Laziness? Lack of pride in language? I can’t relate.

Your prose isn’t a house of horrors, but it can be mildly frustrating, especially when the same damn errors appear again and again. But at this point, I realize I’m dealing with a certain level of incorrigibility: you’re set in your ways, and no more new knowledge can go in, however much I might rant and rave. And with that realization comes the realization that that’s true for all of us as we get older. So you’ll have noticed that I haven’t been correcting your prose of late. Why beat a dead horse?

Push up and push on

Get a food processor. Most come with a grating attachment. Boom, and you’re done. (Peeling a carrot also takes only a few seconds.) Have your housekeeper clean up after you’ve used the processor.

Also: I don’t think I can manage those steep hills. I still have balance issues with stairs, which I can negotiate fine when there’s a banister, but which I’m terrible at when there isn’t. So if I ever visit you in the PI, I won’t be able to do steep trails. I might be able to do stairs if I had a trekking pole with me; otherwise, I’d need a banister.

“Grating 1 3/4 cups of fresh carrots would be a real pain in the ass”

Oh, come on. That takes maybe a minute—two max. Surely, that’s no effort compared to walking 6-10K.

And no lube either…

Glad to hear the Kitchenette is doing well. It’s also got a catchy name, which helps.

Sorry to learn about the ass-raping from your former landlord (landlords? can’t tell, from your post, whether this should be singular or plural, masculine or feminine… you start with the singular and move to the plural, and you don’t mention the sex of the landlord, and I’m too lazy to look this up on previous posts), but you’ve made it clear for a while now that this is an unscrupulous person/these are unscrupulous people with mysterious motivations. Like many Koreans, he/she/they just doesn’t/don’t care how foreigners are treated. And any news of this will never get beyond the expat community, so once again, the landlord/s has/have no reason to care. Angry expats? So what?

I hope that house stays empty a long time. Meanwhile, I guess you ought to document any problems in your current place!

Rolling along the rocky road of life

Nice pics of the walk. I thought it was “a photo every 1000 steps,” but I may be going senile.

Good to see you’re choosing to avoid potential soap operas with the local womenfolk. Stay safe; stay sane; shoot for quality (which, as I’ve said, may mean leaving your comfort zone), and who knows? You may just find the woman of your dreams. Just remember that “finding love” means looking for equal partnership in which you both aid each other’s growth, whereas “finding a caretaker” means looking for someone who’s more like a slave/prostitute—subservient and sexual.

I don’t have a nap sack…

You still seem able to type, read comments, and take photos that are in focus, for whatever that’s worth. Good luck with the upcoming surgery all the same. I’m sure you’ll be in good hands.

“Traitor Joe’s” seems about right.

Did the goat on a rock dispense any wisdom? Or at least offer you some goat cheese?

Rest in Place

You do have those bushy old-man eyebrows, but hey—they make you look distinguished, like a young Pai Mei (White Eyebrows kung-fu school, shown in the “Kill Bill” movies). Oh, well, I guess the brows have been tamed now.

You have a unibrow? Now I need to go back and look at all your previous pictures.

On and on it goes…

I guess you never have to worry about snakes in the grass, correct? Or chiggers? In your blog posts, you say almost nothing about bugs, so I’m guessing they’re not that bothersome, which is surprising to me.

Then again, it makes sense that life that evolves in an area that’s lush with life tends to be a bit lazy and slow-pokey. But go to where the climate is austere—like a desert or, say, Alaska—and the local life forms all tend to be aggressive because you never know when your next meal might be. Alaskan mosquitoes are notoriously vicious; desert snakes and spiders are, too. Even the people evolve in consonance with their geography; lush, verdant India produced contemplative religions like Hinduism and Buddhism; sere, arid climates like in the Arabian peninsula produced decisive, uncompromising religions like Islam.

Not sure where I was going with the above thought, but there we are. Anyway, no chiggers, eh?

Baby, it’s BER outside

Congrats on the darts, and on cleaning up from the “birthday cake” mess. Glad you’re over Jessel. Continued good luck finding a good soul who isn’t a gold-digger.

My personal Hash

Looks to have been a good, solid hike. Hats off. And Happy post-Birthday! Hope you’re enjoying the start of your 67th year.

Whoops– BE doing. I blame AutoCorrect.

Hanging out in the kitchen

Well, you know by now that when a Filipina starts in with the loving messages, it’s because she wants something from you. So take everything she says with a boulder of salt.

I think you have yet to find a girl who really loves you for you. Hope you find that person someday. And seriously—”Jonh”??? Some besotted fool might call that “cute,” but I call it “retarded.” And “she’s not a native English speaker” is no excuse for such a basic mistake. Even non-native English speakers can spell “John.”

I’m glad the Kitchenette seems to be off to a good start. Long may the trend continue!

A good beginning…

Maybe not enough food pics, but lots of smiling faces. Looks to have been a good, auspicious opening. Here’s hoping for a great, prosperous future for your friend, and a good return on investment for you.

Sexy-sex!

Clickbait-y title! But I get the double-entendre. I keep forgetting your birthday is right around mine. This entry was posted on the 27th… is that the big day, or was it the day before? Your posts often refer to events from the previous day, which is why I ask. Once you confirm your birthdate, I’ll write it on my birthday calendar. Should’ve done that years ago.

We will, of course, be expecting food pics and resto pics with lots of smiling faces. Happy Birthday! At 66, you’re only two-thirds of the Devil’s number, so be glad you won’t live to see 666.

Trivia: “sex” is Latin for “six.” It’s pronounced “sakes.”

Rock on!

Menu looks tempting. I looked up “silog” and learned a few things thanks to Wikipedia. I hope your friend’s restaurant turns a profit.

That looked like a nice hike. Those stairs, though!
