So, Mope became our Plan B.
What, no jokes about moping? I’m shocked.
First chance you get, you grab Swan, take her out of the country, and show her what a real resort looks like—in the States, in Fiji, or wherever. The Filipino misuse of the word “resort” is a crime. We have similar problems with “resorts” here in Korea, where Konglish reigns supreme.
At least the food looked halfway decent, and despite the clouds, the beach views looked good, too.

In Barretto there is Subic Bay Johnny, who seems like a friendly guy who would never get into any altercation with the bar managers, Korean or otherwise. And then there is the respected blogger who shares his daily life with his worldwide readership, and provides some nice pictures too. Though neither the vlogger nor the blogger
don’tseem to be the monger types, one can’t avoid the bars of Barreto and the beautiful girls. It seems as if this person is talking about two different people—Subic Bay Johnny and “the respected blogger”—but aren’t these the same people? You’re close to Subic, right? Or is this a totally different “Johnny” (a name I’ve never heard you all yourself)?
And what’s a “monger”? Not a fishmonger, I gather.
Anyone care for a sweet banana split before I go?
Crackalicious. As in “ass crack,” not “white cracker.”
Have fun in San Antonio. What are you doing there? A Hash?

“They Shall Not Grow Old” is also the title of an awesome “documentary” by Peter Jackson (reviewed here).
the Rock Lobster bar
And now I’m one of them
More meetings for you, I guess.
It must suck to be Ken. Or not.
I’ve seen that picture captioned: “That’s when Barbie discovered… Ken was a Democrat.”
Whoever made this must have been drunk to spell Fuckin’ wrong…
I’ve seen folks who speak some version of the King’s English (we’re back to saying “King’s,” yeah?) spell it “fucken,” especially dee Oyrish. When Yanks do it, it’s just sloppy, but I gather it’s considered a kosher spelling across the pond.
[Then again, Wiktionary says “fucken” is Aussie or US slang. Huh.]
There’s a whole rant I can do about Yanks who unknowingly “borrow” expressions from British/Aussie/etc. English. Like the whole “good on ya'” thing that many Americans do nowadays. I’m pretty sure that that particular expression became popular thanks to “Finding Nemo”: in the movie, a great white shark named Bruce exclaims in an Aussie accent, “Good on ya’, mate!” at one point, and I think it caught on with American audiences, who up to that moment were perfectly happy with the homegrown expression, “Good for you.” Changes in language often happen because of mistakes, mishearings, or unconscious borrowings.
I’m in the RSL now[;] I guess I better start respecting Aussie music…

And then my morning coffee with Swan.
One of the symbols for the Buddha is an empty throne. Does that empty chair mean Swan is some sort of wisdom figure?
and it will be going up some now that I’ve employed Swan
What’s she doing for you that’s different from what the other helpers do?
The long and short of it…Leech My Nuggets and Tiny Cunt
Quite a pair.
Nice pics of the walk despite the rain.

re: that menu
That’s a pretty varied, omnibus menu. It gives me a “Jack of all trades, master of none” vibe. That said, if I were to order from it, I’d try…
from the international menu:
– filet mignon with steamed veggies (suspiciously cheap for filet)
– chicken cordon bleu
– japchae
– fish & chips
– Vol-au-vent (“fly into the wind,” a pastry dish)
– kung pao chicken
– red Thai curryfrom the rest of the menu:
– 14″ meat supremo pizza
– bacon & egg burger
– BLT
– chicken pesto pasta
– prawn Alfredo
– adobo chicken
– chef’s nachos
– nachos supreme
– chili cheese fries
– American breakfast
– English breakfast
– breakfast burrito
– pancakes with bananasI’d expect the food to be passable but not excellent. I’d also expect the restaurant to tell me they’re out of such-and-such food given the variety of ingredients they’d have to have on hand to do all of these menu items.
I like the resto’s easy-to-clean, plastic-sheet tablecloths! Reminds me of cheap restaurants from my childhood.
And the flip side, er, that’s racist, I mean the backside.
Call me dense, but I don’t see the racism. Is “flip” racist? For Flip Wilson?
Trivia: “er” is British for “uh.” The UK pronunciation of “er” is “uh,” not a rhotic “errr.” That latter pronunciation comes from a misunderstanding about what to say when you’re at a loss for words. Both Brits and Yanks say “uh,” but Yanks spell it “uh,” and Brits spell it “er.” I’m not going to say anything when a Brit writes “er” because that’s right and proper. But when an American writes “er” and thinks it’s pronounced “errr,” I have to say… write and think Amurrican, dammit!
(You even commented on my above-linked 2021 rant about this!)
so my small umbrella remained unfurled in my side pocket
unfurled = open, like an unfurled flag that is fully extended
That’d be quite a sight—an unfurled umbrella hanging out of your pocket. But I’m pretty sure you meant “furled.”

Looks as though I spoke too soon. We’ve had heavy rain and rain warnings all day today. Mother Nature’s not done with us, either.
» Posted By Kevin Kim On 30/July/2023 @ 9:01 pm
Damn, that’s a lot of rain. I think the monsoon here is starting to wind down. We’re getting a ton of heat warnings instead of flood warnings.
There is no phrasal verb “rein down,” so that’s what Grammarly is picking up on. I’m not even sure as to what pun you were going for. And why are you still using Grammarly, again?
A person in the PI really does have to consider terrain when deciding where to move. If you live down low, you may have to dig deep flood trenches to keep the water out of your property, but from what I’ve seen, no one seems willing to make that effort. The only real alternative is to live up high somewhere.
Water, water everywhere.

That said, I’m not the type to subordinate who I am to appease unwarranted jealousy. Swan would be welcome to join me on any of my bar excursions; if she chooses not to do so, I don’t feel obligated to alter my activity.
There’s some of that Irish stubbornness coming out! But as you yourself note, you have to strike a balance:
I agree the “how would I feel if she did it” rule of thumb is a good standard for me assess my actions. And yes, as I begin to pull away from my old life, I’m starting to realize that I do, in fact, enjoy it. I believe the life I’m pursuing in a relationship with Swan will be better, but it will be an adjustment.
I understand wanting to keep a measure of privacy—of “me” space. And I can respect that. But to me, for a committed relationship, there are some things that obviously have to change. If the female companionship at bars is as meaningless as you say, why not make some male Filipino friends and hang with them? No: the reality is that there’s a subtle man-woman dynamic that you insist on continuing to enjoy, and for the life of me, I don’t get why since it’s all based on money, anyway, and therefore all artificial. Maybe you can help me understand why such meaningless associations remain important to you—especially when you now have a chance at something real and substantive.
That said, I don’t want to disclose the blog because, in a weird way, I don’t see it as any of her business.
Coming back to the “me” space issue: okay, I get that your blog may not be “any of her business.” But my internal pop psychoanalyst reads that and thinks, “Hmm… so we’ve got some deep trust issues here.” As you know from past experiences, love means vulnerability, and vulnerability means openness. It’s a tough risk to take, and I respect you for taking it. But it sounds as if you’re already establishing strict no-go zones a little early in your relationship. It’s the kind of thing that could blow up in your face later.
Or maybe I’m totally wrong about that. I don’t know. Maybe the no-go zones are necessary for now, but they’ll slowly disappear as time goes on and the relationship deepens. You’ll have to follow your conscience on this one.
Whatever happens, good luck.

Seeing an old friend again and enjoying their company doesn’t really equate to a “roving eye.” … although I didn’t specifically mention taking occasional photos.
You can see why I’m thinking that something doesn’t add up here. From a girlfriend’s perspective, taking pics of other women, especially when you do it over and over again, doesn’t seem like a good thing to be doing when you’re in a committed relationship. Also: these “old friends” strike me as being of the rent-a-friend variety. Would they be “friends” at all if you had no money?
I don’t believe Swan knows about my blog. If and when she discovers it, I’ll have to be much more discreet in what I write about our burgeoning relationship.
So it sounds as if you don’t intend to tell her about this rather major aspect of your existence. She’s going to have to discover it for herself. Why is that?
You’re a great one for rationalizing, and it sometimes feels as if you deliberately blind yourself to certain cause-effect dynamics. So I’ll spell it out: in a committed relationship, taking pics of other women doesn’t lead anywhere good. If you really are as keen as you say about not wanting to fuck things up with Swan, you’ll have to stop with your general appreciation of womanhood in order to focus on the woman you claim to value. Hence my “roving eye” language. There is now only one woman for you, and she is your world. Your focus should be exclusively on her, even if she doesn’t want to be photographed. Thought experiment: what if you discovered a whole other side of Swan—one in which she’s got a blog and often displays photographs of guys she knows and is “just friends” with?
I mean, I’m a guy, too, and I’ve appreciated some of the photos you’ve put up of the occasional good-looking chica. But things are different in your life, now, so there’s a lot that’s going to have to change. If you’re already aware that Swan’s discovery of your blog will mean you’ll have to be more discreet, then on some level, you already understand what I’m talking about even if you can’t bring yourself to consciously acknowledge the truth. You still have an urge to continue in your old ways, but you need to appreciate just how much the real estate of your soul is going to have to be plowed over, re-planted, redeveloped, etc. for the sake of this new relationship. And we, your readers, are tough enough that we’ll get by if you stop posting pics of other young women. There’s still plenty in the Philippines to photograph.
The moral guideline should always be, “What would Swan think about what I’m doing?” There’s no more room for previous self-indulgences. Or so I think, anyway.

Batten down them hatches!
It’s always nice to see my old favorite, Jerlyn, again, too.
You’re gonna have to tame that roving eye now that you’re Mr. Committed and no longer Mr. Swinging Single. Your mates might tell you there’s nothing wrong with photographing all these women, but what would Swan say? Does she read your blog?
And it was incredible watching the highway out front start flooding right before our eyes.
I thought Korea had drainage issues.
She returned and said that the kitchen had overcooked the wings and was making a fresh batch. I asked her to bring me the shawarmas while I waited. She came back with one, and I asked where the other was. It turns out she had misunderstood my order, thinking I wanted to buy one shawarma and get one order of wings.
I sympathize. Korean delivery constantly fucks up my orders.
the agent says she has a couple more foreigners who are interested.
Good luck with those foreigners.

But if the river rises that much, I’m sure we’ll see the wildlife march by in twos…
You’ve probably heard this joke:
The rains are pouring down, and people are starting to evacuate, and when a pickup truck rolls by Old Joe’s place to offer Joe a ride, Joe says, “I’m not worried. God will save me.” The waters rise, and Joe retreats to the second floor of his place. A boat floats by, and when the boater offers Joe a ride out of town, Joe says, “I’m not worried. God will save me.” The waters continue to rise, and Joe ends up on his house’s rooftop. A helicopter flies over, and a guy with a bullhorn shouts down to ask Joe if he needs a lift. “I’m not worried!” Joe shouts back. “God will save me!” The helo flies off, and the waters continue to rise… Old Joe drowns. Finding himself before the Heavenly Throne, Joe grouses at the Almighty, “I had faith you would save me! What happened?” And God grouses back, “What do you want? I sent you a pickup, a boat, and helicopter!”
re: rainy walk
Yeah, it’s probably best to keep your walks short when there’s that much rain.
I’m not sure if that is good news or bad news for the rice farmers…
I don’t know what the harvest rhythm is like in eternally warm countries, but in Korea, that sort of flooding would be bad news for rice: rice paddies are supposed to be flooded in the spring, not the summer. By fall, all of that groundwater is gone, and the harvest begins.
Nearing Naugsol, two rivers collide…
In Hinduism, the churning confluence of two rivers is religiously significant.
The streets of Naugsol barangay
Okay, on your blog, I’ve seen “barangay” both capitalized and uncapitalized. Is it like how the word “city” can be a common noun or part of a proper noun?
– I’m off to the city.
– Mexico City is huge. Here’s hoping the storms let up soon.

I heard from the agent looking for a replacement tenant in my current digs that she has a couple of interested foreigners. One wants to know if I can move out sooner than October. I checked with my future landlord, who told me the house would be in move-in condition by September first. So, I passed that info along, and I’ll keep my fingers crossed that someone will move in when I move out.
Well, that sounds like good news. Congratulations. September instead of October. The sooner, the better.
Dinner is served. Chicken cordon bleu.
Yes, that is impressive. Looks better than mine.
I don’t want to feel like I have to walk on eggshells around Swan, but I do need to learn to be more in tune with who she is and how she sees things. She’s got a good sense of humor but doesn’t like me using “bad words.” She is also not fond of sexual innuendos. I’m going to have to learn to do better in both regards. Swan tends to take some things too seriously, and I’m one who likes to kid around, so hopefully, we’ll reach an understanding on some middle ground. But like I told her, if those issues are our biggest problem, we are indeed blessed.
Obviously, I don’t know your situation in detail, but from my faraway perch, it seems you’re actively trying to make this relationship work. And you’re right: you both will doubtless end up having to make some compromises. That’s how relationships work.
Song-wise, I’m surprised you didn’t go for George Michael’s “Praying for Time.”

re: succès de scandale
Yeah, success from (as a result of) scandal, or even “success of a scandal.”
I do feel sorry for these gals that choose the oldest profession, but in almost every case I’ve seen, it’s the only viable choice and best opportunity they have to earn a living.
I think your liberalism is showing, Mr. Former Government Worker! I seriously doubt it’s “the only viable choice” for any of these chicas. As for opportunities, well, if you play your cards right, sex is definitely a money-maker, no doubt about it. My brother Sean (cellist) went to music school with a slim, cute classmate named Megan (violinist). I later found out that Megan paid off her entire scholastic debt, and her rent, by stripping. Now, stripping is a look-but-don’t-touch business, so there may be a qualitative difference between that and prostitution, but she’s still selling a form of sex, at least by providing lame, horny guys with a wank fantasy. So yes, the trade is undeniably a quick way to make cash, and Megan fell into the right market. A lot of women in the sex biz, however, don’t, and they remain in constant debt, probably because a huge cut gets handed to their pimp. If a woman’s going to go down the carnal path, she should try to opt for Megan’s way of doing it: look but don’t touch, and be your own boss. It’s up to the women to make themselves aware of their options instead of acting trapped. Of course, Uncle Kev would advise these women to avoid that path entirely and cultivate other talents and skills. What would you say to Gracyn?
Swan also provided an appetizer of Spam and cheese on crackers while she finished preparing our dinner.
You can dignify those by calling them “canapés.”
Dinner is served! Beef bulgogi and rice. Yum!
And it looks quite good.
I’m happy that she makes me feel welcome, and if I have to share her with a dead man for the time being, so be it. Her happiness is my mission.
That seems to be about the best you can do. I can understand a certain level of discomfort and impatience, but you’re playing the long game and trying to combat any selfish impulses. All good.
The rain clouds impeded my first sunset from the patio, but this wasn’t bad.
That’s actually quite beautiful.
And if you can’t be with the one you love, honey
Love the one you’re withI’m not sure I get the song’s logic. It’s like telling the American soldier, deployed overseas and with a wife waiting for him back in the States, to go on and boink the willing local chick who’s right in front of him.
Or is this a song of self-sacrifice in that the guy, who’s away, is telling his girl (“honey”) that it’s okay if she hooks up with someone else because her happiness is that important to him?
I just read the lyrics to get the context… and I’m still confused. The singer is a guy, and he’s talking to another guy (“There’s a girl right next to you/ And she’s just waitin’ for something to do”), and it really sounds as if he’s telling him to just bang the local girl. While that sounds like plausibly man-to-man advice (“Gitcher rocks off”), you have to wonder how the girl back home is gonna feel. The more I think about it, the more I think this song is sinister.
Anyway, here’s to more dates with Swan and fewer trips to the bar. She might make an honest man of you yet.

re: cake photo
Who made the cake? Looks to be a chocolate pound cake.
When I was a kid, I never understood the contradiction in “have your cake and eat it, too.” Have means it’s in my possession. Once it’s in my possession, I can eat it. Even after eating half of it, it’s still in my possession. So what’s the problem? Little did I know, at the time, that this saying comes from an older time, and have meant something more like “preserve without loss” in this context. So by this reckoning, if you’re eating the cake, you’re losing it bit by bit, not preserving it without loss.
Why are rap songs promoting crime and violence okay, but a country song proclaiming resistance to crime and violence is bad?
Matt Walsh deals with an aspect of this question here.

Good luck as you explore the parameters of your current situation. Sometimes, life is more interesting when there are strictures to navigate. It’s like how Twitter makes some people more creative because it forces them to condense their thoughts into only a few hundred characters. On my blog, I’ve referred to that as “the paradox of freedom.” Liberty through boundaries.
Even outside of the traditional Filipino context, I’d say hopping into the sack with someone else barely three months after your loved one has died is tacky at best. So I’m entirely in Swan’s corner on this. That said, I’m glad you’re making the effort to understand her situation and accommodate her. It might mean a year of monasticism for you (welcome to my life), but I think the rewards will be worth it: you both now have the breathing room to learn more about each other, and by next April, Swan will have a better idea of whether she sees a future with you.
Please don’t be tempted to seek other female companionship while you go through this period. And yes, that includes “innocent” back rubs. Stay away from all such physicality; become a noble knight who remains true to his lady whatever the cost. That’s a tough row to hoe for someone accustomed to flitting superficially from encounter to encounter, but for this Swan thing to work, it’s a habit that, like a dragon, must be slain.
And before I bury myself too deeply in medieval metaphors, I’ll stop here and again wish you good luck. Spiritually speaking, this may be your toughest Hash yet. Over the coming months, the ladies around you might notice a fundamental change in your orientation, and they might even come to respect it.

And you can see how wet the turf we walked was. Once your feet are wet, it doesn’t matter anymore.
Doesn’t such water contain a lot of grit that remains in your shoe after the water itself dries out? How do you deal with that? I get plenty annoyed by pebbles and dirt without having to wade through wet, muddy spots: if I’m walking to Hanam City, for example, I almost always pick up pebbles during the final 5-7K of the walk, so I have to sit on a bench and bang them out of my shoes. Muddy, gritty water would drive me insane.
Turns out, it is something called Oliarces clara, or Moth Lacewing.
So you’re not the only one with weird ideas about what moths look like.
Today is my mother’s birthday.
Happy Birthday, 사모님/Samonim! (Respectful way to say “Missus.”)
re: the Swan thing
How long ago did she lose her man? If it’s been only a couple months, I’d say she needs time and space to process—at least a year. For anyone dealing with grief, much time and space should be given. This is what bugged me about how my dad handled my mom’s death: after only two months, Dad had tossed Mom aside like garbage and found himself another lady (he married her within a year). And I know why: having no backbone or special principles of his own, Dad was at sea, desperate to latch on to the first lady to come along so he wouldn’t have to deal with coping on his own. This is why I see the needing of other people as a weakness: the healthiest relationships happen between two independent souls who meet and relate on the basis of strength, not neediness. Dad, the weakling, had actually been seeing this woman while Mom was dying of brain cancer—shit I found out later, after Mom had passed. My point is that Dad essentially “handled” his grief by avoiding it, by just hopping right onto another train because he couldn’t really cope, and the thought of being alone scared the bejesus out of him. What Swan is doing might make you feel a bit impatient, but from where I sit, she’s chosen a much healthier path than my dad did. So please give her all the space and consideration she needs as she processes what happened and where she’s going.
Do keep in mind, too, that there’s stuff about you that she’s going to need to know down the road, e.g., that you’re still legally married. I’ve talked about this before when you were chasing after different women, but it’s going to come up if things get deep, and you can’t hide it or lie about it or paper over it with an “I’m divorced in my heart.” From Swan’s point of view, that’s almost certainly not going to cut it. Just something to keep in mind for later.
On the more positive side, I have the example of my sophomore-year roommate, Travis, who was a gigolo when I knew him, flinging his DNA around wantonly and always banging an ever-changing circle of five or six girls at once. He had no respect for women despite his “yes’m, no’m” Southern upbringing, but after college, he found a woman, settled down, and had himself a family. He’s been a model husband and father ever since. Despite your own checkered track record of four marriages and many broken relationships in Korea and the Philippines, who knows? Maybe a future with Swan could end up being settled and smooth. Do what you can to understand her and where she’s coming from, and there’s a chance that things might work out. This could be your chance to hop off the samsaric wheel.
Of course… such optimism has been expressed before…

John’s menu still looks awesome. If I spent two weeks in Barretto, I’d visit his restaurant every day and just plow through the whole menu, ordering several dishes at a time.
So at roughly 50 pesos to the dollar, 18,000 pesos comes out to $360. (At the real exchange rate, it’s closer to $329.) Whether that’s a lot depends on how long your purchases last, I guess. How many times a month do you shop like this?

I gave the webmaster a heads-up about the issues you’ve noted.
Just visited the site. Still no change. How old is this guy? Feels as if we’re dealing with the French. “Eet geets done when eet geets done.”
That damn comma between the names of the Hares wasn’t my doing[;] fucking Grammarly wanted it there.
I keep telling you that Grammarly is useless. A crutch like Grammarly merely prevents you from learning the rules yourself and using your own educated discretion—as opposed to going on vague intuitions like “that felt wrong.” While all language contains creative leeway, there are still rules that govern most situations. Those rules are learnable.
Shit, I can’t even spell “semicolon” right, let alone use one correctly in a sentence.
Technically, “semi-colon” is legit, but it’s archaic. It’s like being in 1800s England and writing to someone, “I met an odd gentleman to-day.”

And the quote in the photo makes more sense: you don’t freeze people inside blocks of ice at the end of a Hash.

I decided to give the Subic Bay Hash website a visit. Whoever’s running the site very badly needs a proofreader/editor. From the site:
Subic Bay Hash House Harriers were founded on 26 July, 1993. We are a adult hash that Runs every Monday at 2:30 sharp!. The Hash with a view. ‘It’s NICE with ICE’. Barrio Barretto, Olongapo City\Subic Bay.
“a adult hash”: an adult Hash
“2:30 sharp!.”: delete period
‘It’s NICE with ICE’.: put period inside quotation mark unless British
“Olongapo City\Subic Bay”: use a forward slash, not a back slashYesterday’s Hares, Leech My Nuggets, and Bug Fucker, laid a flat trail and stayed on the paved streets of Barretto for the most part
Thanks to an extra comma, I can read the above sentence as talking about three parties: (1) Yesterday’s Hares, (2) Leech My Nuggets, and (3) Bug Fucker. I suspect, though, that you were going for this:
Yesterday’s Hares, Leech My Nuggets and Bug Fucker, laid a flat trail and stayed on the paved streets of Barretto for the most part
There’s something about Mary:
She seems to be doing well in Manila.
Factory work, eh? Well, good luck in that Dickensian world.
Beef and onion pie for my after-hike supper.
Well, I’m glad you like onions.
Cumslinger must be thinking, “How am I going to compete with that?” as his girlfriend, Whatever You Want,” has her eyes on the prize.
I spy an extra quotation mark.
After the Hash, some of us gathered at It Doesn’t Matter for some more embibing.
I’ve learned a new gerund: embibing.
Nope, not even if it were a semi-colon.
I’ve long been curious as to why you hyphenate “semi-colon.” It’s considered a legitimate spelling but archaic. Semicolon. I looked up “semicolon” at both Dictionary.com and Merriam Webster, and neither shows the hyphenated form. I had to search farther afield to find justification for the hyphen.
Your archaism makes me think of old Monty Burns on The Simpsons going, “Ah! This must be the so-called ‘iced cream.'”
it’s only two and a half minutes, so suck it up and enjoy some old-school country western music that I grew up on courtesy of my father
At least it’s not that nasal, twangy shit I hate. I’m fine with country when it’s sung by the likes of Kenny Rogers, Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Bonnie Raitt, Reba McEntire, etc. But anything resembling the horrific stylings of Garth Brooks can kindly go fuck itself.
Actor Tim Blake Nelson turns out to be a pretty good country singer.

RIP, Rex.
I’ve also acquired a larger umbrella.
I guess that’s okay unless it gets very windy.
And another one gone, and another one gone…
Queen also sang, “Who wants to live forever?”

«« Back To Stats PageAre we really going to have the “foot massage” discussion from Pulp Fiction? Would you let a guy give you those rubs? Of course there’s a sexual subtext, and as a sign of your devotion to your lady, you might consider declaring yourself off limits to that sort of female attention. Just sayin’. And think how much less money you’ll spend on women “earning” their drinks.
