Congrats on the new appliances!
I’ll have to figure out how to fill in that space.
I may have mentioned that I have a friend who uses “dead Asian hookers” as a unit of measurement for trunk space in a car (that’s a “boot” for you UK readers). “That looks to be about a 5- or 6-hooker trunk.” So might I suggest filling the extra space with those tiny, little ladies?
re: birria tacos
Birria has been trendy for several years in the States, judging by how all my go-to YouTube chefs suddenly began doing birria this and birria that. I’m curious to try birria style myself at some point. Home cook Ethan Chlebowski spent time in Mexico exploring the food culture. Here’s a sample video. Here’s Joshua Weissman doing birria tacos.
FOURTH STOP: LA OFFICINA BAR
In Spanish, “oficina” has only one “f.” You sure about the bar’s name?
Looks to have been an adventure. An adventure I can’t relate to and would never join, but an adventure all the same. That’s what makes me wonder: if I did ever visit you in the PI, what the hell would I do? Your idea of chemically enhanced fun and my idea of fun are polar opposites. We’d meet briefly for walks, maybe hang out a bit while you’re sober, and that’d be about it. I feel no pleasure hanging out in bars, no desire to watch dancing girls, and no need to witness my companions getting pissed out of their skulls. I’d want to scope out the local churches (I’m into sacred architecture), do a “resto crawl,” do a “native-food crawl,” go visit a martial-arts school (karambit, arnis/escrima), see the outlying towns, and witness a traditional pig slaughter. Pretty much all of that is outside of your ambit.
Of course, with the PI being so hot and humid, the chances of my making it there at all are exceedingly slim. So I’ll continue to enjoy these posts about your life there, I guess. Congrats, again, on the new appliances.

Oh well, it did have a cooling effect, and once you are wet, what difference does it make?
Hiker’s pragmatism. I love it.
Mushrooms growing on a log is a rare thing to see.
It’s a beautiful picture. I wonder, though, whether the PI has a mushroom culture like in Korea and Japan, where you can see logs deliberately set up to lean against each other, with holes drilled into their surfaces for cultivated mushrooms.
Scott and one of the new girls, Doris, bringing up the rear.
How has Scott’s ankle been holding up?
What a rainy day in Tibag looks like
I’m fine with rain as long as (1) there’s no mud to contend with, and (2) it’s not cold. Rain and cold together are the pits: they sap your soul.
Careful with the drinking. That’s the major source of your carbs, I think.

the house should be good to go, or at least good enough, come 1 October.
Is there a chance they’ll still be working on the place when you move in? If yes, I hope that doesn’t get awkward.
Who knew I’d be singing and relating to those protest songs for the 1960s again.
Looking at that video’s thumbnail, I find myself thinking: “Ah, yes: the era of fishbowl haircuts and cowboy hats.”
We’re almost halfway through September! How much prep do you have to do for the move, and how long will prepping take?

Feeling tired.
That’s a nice pic, with the mossy wall, and the tires and trail leading off into the distance.
In the meantime, he has fucked up one of our most popular hiking routes–the My Bitch trail.
Sorry to hear it. But the trail is still doable so long as you take a detour, yes?
this was the scariest part of the hike.
Looks pretty steeply tilted. Yikes.
The breast cake of the day!
Such nice, pink nipples. And the lady’s holding the cake at almost the proper optical-illusion angle. The guy on the left doesn’t look pleased, though. I hope the cake tasted good, at least.
Walk on!

Gorgeous day, gorgeous night, gorgeous food.
So the serial killer wasn’t executed? Is there no death penalty in the Philippines, or did he not kill enough people to earn it? …Or was he doing the PI a favor by killing off the furriners (i.e., he became a folk hero)?
Getting framed for something seems like the ultimate nightmare, especially since getting framed is beyond your control. Some bad actor takes one look at you and decides you’re just the right person to be the scapegoat for his evil plot, and the rest of your life is a downhill slide to hell from that point on. Better make friends with good lawyers in your area. Give them lots of steak dinners.

re: all the bars in one place
What do you think about having similarly themed establishments all in one place? In Korea, you see this all the time, and to an insane degree: trinket shops selling the same wares right next to each other; food stalls, electronics stores, clothing stores, etc., all shoulder to shoulder. In a capitalistic sense, this is about as direct as you can get in terms of competition, but you still have to wonder how healthy such a mix is. It’s different for, say, restaurant districts because there, you’ve got a bit more breathing room, and it’s rarer to see restaurants selling food X right next to each other. I sense that, for barhopping, it’s convenient that you don’t have far to stumble when moving from bar to bar, but does this sort of close competition guarantee, in a Darwinian way, that there’ll be a loser? (I suppose one answer to that is Yes—fuckin’ duh.)
That sign is misleading; it is actually located on the third floor.
Some enterprising fellow had better slap a sticker on the incorrect text and right that wrong. I approve of vigilante proofreading!

A friend and ex-coworker of mine works in Qatar. Loves the place. I’d go if it weren’t for the damn desert heat. Why’d she leave Qatar? The boyfriend?
Well, sometimes you just gotta go with the flow, I suppose.
Okay, now, that’s a strange smile. Did you see that video of DeSantis fake-smiling during an interview?
It doesn’t appear all those previously consumed beers adversely impacted my sobriety.

Anyway, the bar review will have to wait for another day.
You’re a more merciful evaluator than I would’ve been. If I had caught him with his pants down like that, I’d have written a review that dinged him. And that’s what makes you the better man.
And the view of my pulled pork sandwich. It was yum, as usual.
Beautiful pic of a hearty sandwich. I didn’t realize native speakers also said, “It was yum.” Back when I taught Korean kids privately, I corrected them by saying “yummy” with the understanding that “yum” is the interjection while “yummy” is the adjective. I might have to stop correcting them, though, now that I know “It was yum” isn’t Konglish. Reminds me of when I found out “fry pan” isn’t Konglish. I’d first heard Koreans saying it, and it sounded strange to my American ears (we Yanks say “frying pan”), but years later, I discovered it’s how the Brits say it. Another gaffe on my part.

So again, my issue isn’t about the lack of sex. If it turns out she isn’t interested in having an intimate relationship, we can settle for friendship. It may be as simple as she doesn’t find me attractive or interesting. I won’t “fire” her because she is not up for being my lover. I don’t fuck the help anyway.
At the risk of offending you: I’m not quite sure I believe the first sentence given your history. It’s almost always sex on the first or second date, which is another way of saying the chicks you sleep with are either trashy or just plain desperate for cash (but still trashy if they’re accepting money for sex). Swan, by sticking to her guns, has proved she’s not the stereotypical easy chick who hangs around the foreign guys for sex, beer, and money.
And that final sentence: so you’re saying Swan will be off limits once she becomes “the help”? I think I can finally see which way this relationship is going. And I hate to say it, but I’m also a bit leery of Swan’s claim that things will be different once you’re both under the same roof. This sounds as if she’s merely placating or mollifying you, perhaps as a way to keep you from pressuring her (“pressuring” from her point of view). What does “things will be different” mean, exactly? The mourning period will suddenly be over, and she’ll jump your bones? She’ll suddenly start sharing all the things she hasn’t been sharing up to now? She’s going to turn into a completely different person? I don’t know, but something smells fishy. I hope I’m wrong, but tigers don’t usually change their stripes.
Can you list ten of Swan’s virtues, i.e., character traits that make this pursuit worthwhile? What are the reasons you’re sticking this out?
» Posted By Kevin Kim On 11/September/2023 @ 2:04 am
My feelings now are likely a manifestation of my selfishness and inability to put Swan’s needs first. But I know what I want, and if it turns out Swan can’t or won’t provide it, then I’m prepared to accept that we are not destined to be lovers.
I’m pretty sure what you want is sex, which on some level I think you see as either deeper than love or necessary for true love (provided the lady is young enough and vigorous enough—no one over 50!). But what if Swan offers the emotional bonds of love without the sex? To be clear, an expectation of sex in a deep relationship isn’t irrational at all. The physical and the emotional/spiritual commingle the deeper you go. But what if Swan’s slow process of opening up (figuratively and literally) means she’ll open up to you emotionally before she even considers the more conjugal side of things? Can you train yourself to wait for that, or are you on some kind of urgent sex schedule (“It should’ve happened by now!”), and you feel as if you’re falling behind?
While deep relationships normally have their emotional and physical sides, I think it’s also the case that you’re used to things proceeding at a certain breakneck pace, and Swan is absolutely violating that for you, hence your frustration. I suspect you have a chance at a real, lasting, and dare I say normal relationship, here, where it’s not always about pounding the hell out of the lady in bed and cuddling afterward. It might be time to adopt a less brutish and more sustainable worldview.
And I guess the practical question is: with Swan signing up as one of your caretakers, will she remain in that role if you decide the relationship is a no-go?

In case you think I’m crazy about the “I wonder” thing, here’s a reference that explains the situation better than I did.

Someone noticed that I cut my spaghetti rather than roll it on the fork in the traditional fashion. Hey, it’s just the way I roll, er, don’t roll.
Cut your spaghetti??? What are you, five??? Jesus Christ. If you ever visit my place in Seoul again, I’ll know not to make you pasta. Unless it’s orzo, fusilli, or orecchiette. You know—the scoopable pastas.
Maybe I should just serve SpaghettiOs.
I shouldn’t be too harsh, though. There are things from childhood that I still do, too. When I tie my shoelaces, for example, I still use the childish “rabbit ears” method instead of the more mature “through the loop” method.
Don’t read too much into this; it has not come anywhere near to that. Yet.
At this point, I’m just waiting to see how October goes.
And to her credit, Swan continually assures me that everything will be different for us come October. I’m looking forward to that. I’m also prepared to do what I need to do if it comes to pass that I am not a priority in her life. Stay tuned.
Why do I feel as if I’ve read almost these exact words before?
I wonder how many I messed up in this post?
You can start with “I wonder” sentences. Technically, when you begin a sentence with “I wonder,” you’re declaring your mental state about a certain matter.
RIGHT: I wonder where she went.
WRONG: I wonder where she went?“I wonder” sentences should end with periods.
Glad to see it was finally sunny out. And those were nice pics of the hikes… and even of the bars.
My buddy Tom texted me that “commas” meme just yesterday. It’s a variant of the much older “Eat Grandma/Grandpa!” meme. Commas save lives.

Alas, I will always associate that song with the horrific ear-removal scene from “Reservoir Dogs.” That was a brutal movie. At least you have better memories to associate with the song!

re: the Jana/Lana thing
I think Paul’s point was that, if you flipped the mirror image of the name around, the name actually says “Jana,” not “Lana.” “Lana” is what the meme’s caption says, which means the writer of the meme also got it wrong. If you write JANA in all caps, then hold a mirror up to the word, you’ll see something that looks a lot like ANAL. If her name had truly been LANA, the “L” would have flipped and looked more like a “J,” leading to the mirror image of ANAJ.
I, meanwhile, was teasing Paul for writing, “She is, in fact, Jana and Lana” when he probably should have said, “She is, in fact, Jana, NOT Lana.” (But maybe Paul intended the “and,” and I missed an even subtler joke.)
If the girl’s from a Latin country, then “Jana” would be pronounced “Hannah.” If she’s from a country where the people speak a Germanic/Nordic language, then she’s more likely a “Yannah.”
The problem is, after all this time, my regulars expect a drink when I visit the bar, and it kills my buzz to disappointment. I’m cutting way back (probably half of what I used to buy), so it’s a weaning process.
May you wean yourself aaaaalllll the way off eventually. Why continue if it’s disappointing? Life is too short to spend it on negatives.
» Posted By Kevin Kim On 05/September/2023 @ 4:34 am
Ha! Indeed. She is, in fact, Jana and Lana.
» Posted By Kevin Kim On 04/September/2023 @ 11:30 pm
That’s unfortunate, but there’s a way to set your camera so the image isn’t reversed.
Well, the image isn’t reversed. The photographer just happened to catch the mirror, so that’s a natural mirror image in an unreversed photo. To fix that, you’d have to flip the image horizontally, but then everyone will see the unflipped letters in the mirror and realize the image is actually backwards.
So will you soon be employing alternative strategies instead of paying for lady drinks? I still think you ought to lay off the ladies completely. It’s obvious that you let the ladies hang with you because they’re ladies. If there were “bar guys,” I’m pretty sure you’d have no bar-guy habit. You’ve got a craving for female attention that you can set aside with a little willpower. Your real mistress is the Bierstein, after all.

Wikipedia says:
A French dip sandwich, also known as a beef dip, is a hot sandwich consisting of thinly sliced roast beef (or, sometimes, other meats) on a “French roll” or baguette. It is usually served plain, but a popular variation is to top with Swiss cheese, onions, and a dipping container of beef broth produced from the cooking process (termed au jus, “with juice”).
Yeah, as a French speaker, I cringe every time I hear the way English-speakers use “au jus” as a noun, e.g., “Dip it in the au jus.” The phrase “au jus” in French is closer to being an adjectival or adverbial expression meaning “with” or “accompanied by” or “in the style of.” So it’d be more proper to say something like, “Here’s your roast beef au jus.” But, no—we Anglos had to misappropriate the expression. Ah, well. Language usually evolves through fuck-ups: mishearings, misunderstandings, etc.

Had to look up “billabong.” I rightly guessed that it was a Down Underism; it’s an Aussie name for an oxbow lake, not anything marijuana-related.
I finished my jaunt at Sit-n-Bull and brought home a sandwich to keep me company at lunchtime.
Sandwich looks good. I’m guessing it’s a French dip given the, uh, dip.
I haven’t accomplished jackshit all afternoon.
That’s a new one: I’ve never seen “jack shit” spelled as a single word. Do you pronounce it that way, too? With the rhythm of a word like “exit” or “hatchet”?
“Wet Leg” sounds like a disaster that happens when you can’t reach the restroom fast enough. And thanks for the etymological link to “chaise longue/lounge.” I always thought of the English term as a simple bastardization of the French, but the story’s more complicated than that. The More You Know.

Error: it’s a comma splice, so you need a semicolon instead of a comma.
It’s been a while since I saw the movie. I didn’t remember the erectile dysfunction. But Rachel’s friend did affirm that Pete was a saint, right? I still interpret that as self- restraint, though, because he initially gave in to the invitation to a blowjob, and with enough mouth magic on Sarah’s part, Pete might have “come alive” eventually.
Yes, Sarah herself is a narcissistic bitch. Her character doesn’t grow or change at all throughout the movie.

Everybody’s so different, I haven’t changed.
Spot the error!
And one of the things she said was, “You only come to see me when you are drunk.”
She wants you to assess her accurately when you’re sober?
It’s scary to think the sheeple will fall for this madness yet again. Here’s hoping our betters are in for a rude awakening.
I guess we’re going to find out whether anyone learned anything. Let’s hope the PI and Korea don’t return to masking and vaxxing mandates.
Glad you enjoyed the movie. See what I mean by self-restraint?

Early to bed (8:30) and earlier to rise (3:30).
I can’t even begin to imagine such a schedule, but it’s close to that of the monks here in Korea: about 9:30 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. for sleep. I’m proud when I get up at 5 a.m. during my trans-Korea walks.
Lots of rain down your way. We’re getting over our latest storm, which has passed east of us on its way to cuddle up with Japan. Gonna be an awesome weekend here, especially at night. Good luck weathering the weather.

so I’ll find another way to acquire “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” before I forget.
For movie titles, the actual standard is just to italicize the title, but some journalistic sources use quotation marks (which is the style I use on my blog). You never see both done at the same time, so you should pick just one.

I think the best you can do for Swan is to be there for her. She needs the network of support, but she also needs her space, so you’re “on call.” And from the text exchange, it seems she understands you’re doing your best to be understanding.
For Swan’s part, I hope she tries a little harder to see and understand those around her so as to avoid left-handed gaffes like her unintentionally insensitive Facebook post. In dealing with grief, one of the hardest lessons is that life does indeed go on, and you either move purposefully with the flow of the river or get washed away. When my mom died, I didn’t like hearing all the “life goes on” messages that came my way, and it’s fair to say that, if you want to tell someone that life goes on, you should be mindful of timing and tact. At the same time, I’ve come to accept that lesson: life does go on. It has to. And I hope Swan eventually internalizes that lesson, too.
Great pics of the hike. Sorry to hear that more storms are heading your way. We’re dealing with some weather here as well, but it’s going to be magnificent as we get closer to the weekend. I plan to do the same 33K hike I did a couple weeks ago. Without tripping this time if possible.

And yes, I’m sure it was Swan’s way of paying respect to her deceased love, but after being stiffed on my b-day, it made me feel like shit.
I’m really sorry to hear that, especially on your birthday. This doesn’t make Swan into an evil person, but from my distant vantage, she does come off as a bit tone-deaf. I mean, come on—she’s aware you read her Facebook, yes?
It rained like a [motherfucker] all damn day, precluding me from taking my usual Sunday solo hike.
You don’t don a rain jacket and go road/street hiking? Well, then again, it was a typhoon and not a typical, smallish storm.

re: Gwapo/Guapo
So “gwapo” is the bastardized Filipino spelling of the Spanish “guapo,” I gather.
They made me this nice sign, too.
You see how the sign says “Guapo” with a “u.”
And then the food arrived.
So who is the serious-looking guy at the bar?
re: imaginary numbers
You may remember that, with so-called real numbers, a square root can never be negative. But with imaginary numbers, square roots of negative numbers are possible. So i = the square root of -1. This means, for example, that the square root of -25 is 5i.
I remember being frustrated when learning about imaginary numbers because none of my teachers ever explained what they were for. It was only much later in life that I discovered imaginary numbers are used in branches of physics to describe the properties and behaviors of things like electric fields. So despite being imaginary, these numbers all have a real-world use. And I’m left to resent several of my math teachers for never having offered a simple explanation as to what these numbers were good for. Not that this problem has ever kept me awake at night, but this is still an annoying chapter in my past.
re: Swan
I’m guessing that part of Swan’s tone-deafness comes from the fact that she’s still marinating in the tragedy. There could be some (clinical) depression involved. Depressed people often can’t help focusing on themselves; their horizon narrows to a very small point, like a spotlight whose beam shrinks until it illuminates only them. This at least partly explains what’s going on in a suicidally depressed person’s head when they cease to see any options for escaping their situation other than self-elimination. I can only imagine it’s hard to fight this horizon-narrowing when you’re depressed. If this is, in fact, depression, Swan will paradoxically need breathing room while at the same time requiring a network of people around her to help her through this. So one way to look at her tone-deafness is to understand that she’s walking a rough road. The best thing you can do is just be there for her. Presence is everything.
I get that your patience has limits. You have my sympathy, but I confess that part of me does derive some grim satisfaction from watching you have to switch from the usual sex-on-day-one bullshit to this slow, plodding pace. It’s to your credit, though, that you think Swan is worth the trouble. She really must be something.
Ever see “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”? There’s that hilarious scene where our protagonist, Pete, has broken up with Sarah and is seeing Rachel, but late in the movie, Sarah starts coming on to Pete after she’s broken up with her pretentious Brit boyfriend Aldous. Pete succumbs to Sarah’s advances, but Pete hilariously has an attack of conscience in mid-blowjob. He somehow manages to pull away from Sarah out of loyalty to Rachel and, feeling awful, he lamely confesses the half-blowjob to Rachel. She is understandably furious, and she goes to her friend and coworker Dwayne and tells him what Pete told her. Dwayne, impressed, tells Rachel that Pete must be some kind of saint to stop himself mid-blowjob. No guy does that: the self-restraint on display is incredible. This shifts Rachel’s view slightly, and she eventually forgives Pete for his indiscretion.
While your situation isn’t quite analogous to Pete’s, and as much as I feel some Schadenfreude about your current plight, I do also respect your self-restraint. Here’s hoping your patience is rewarded. The dynamic is going to shift a lot come October, and I still wonder whether there’s some awkwardness about Swan being your employee but also your romantic interest. I guess you’ll figure things out. That’s my hope, anyway.
Meanwhile, Happy Post-birthday! You did say one thing I should address, though:
