At the end of days

re: Bush Diver

My condolences. May he find himself waist-deep in angel bush now.

re: Chester the Molester

Yikes. Not the kind of brush with fame anyone is looking for.

the hours are ten to midnight

Fancy that. A two-hour bar.

I’ve never been to the Kon Tiki before, but have heard many good things about it.

Spot the error! And why is it an error? Let’s see whether you’ve really learned anything. If you give up, click here and look around for a hint.

The menu options.

The options all look good. I was staring at the menu and fantasizing, and I decided I’d probably have a tuna poke bowl, Hawaiian chicken curry, and the mac and cheese. None of these things goes together, but variety is the point. If I had any room after that, maybe a Kahuna Burger, just to have a Pulp Fiction moment.

Damn, that stings

Need to work on the English in that question: “What’s the worse thing your husbands said while you were having sex?”

Have fun SOBing.

Flat-out tired

More cookies dispensed

That kid doesn’t look quite Filipino. Think he’s a half-and-half?

Looks to have been a hot hike without much shade (I’ve heard the Camino de Santiago is a shade-less route), but I imagine the end was worth the effort.

Just another manic Tuesday

I saw this display at Royal and thought to myself, “Who wipes shit on their face?”

I love her bulletproof-looking forehead.

Do you pronounce it “forehead” or “fahrrid” or “fawrrid”?

At least the water was calm this week.

How’re you guys for sharks? Get a lot of ’em out there, or is there nothing?

I had the enchiladas.

They look good and proper.

It’s the least I could do

You got your awards framed on some wall in your place?

This one hits a little too close to home.

When it gets so bad that you stop learning things, that’s when it’s time to call it quits on life. Criteria include relationship fuckups and the same punctuation errors over and over. Avoid that samsara, and you’re good.

I never sausage a Hash…

What? You don’t want me to survive next time? Ouch!

I thought about teasing out the joke further by writing something like, “If you don’t die every time you hike from now on, I’ll stop reading your blog.” But I decided that brevity is the soul of wit, at least in this case.

I’m up for the challenge of one good climb at the beginning of the trail

Psychologically, I’m not all that different: I prefer to get the hard stuff out of the way first.

The surprise came at the end, when I was thinking we’d be heading back down but instead had to endure another climb.

Yeah, that’s the kind of psych-out that can leave a person feeling resentful.

And we are On-On!

18-Kilo Ass is back!

The view from here

Really nice blues and greens.

The Easter Mountain shot

This pic is different from your other Easter Mountain pics: it’s taken from a higher point than the mountain itself, or so it seems.

What the world calls the Sea of Japan is known as the East Ocean in Korea.

I’ve never heard that. It’s usually either East Sea or Eastern Sea.

“Sea” here: Sea of Japan

Sounds as though it was an arduous day, but you survived, so that’s a point in your favor. Now, don’t let it happen again.

Another day is done

There were like thirty of these boats stacked here.

There’s a sign next to the boats that has some Tagalog and Spanish on it. I recognize the Spanish word basura, which means “garbage.”

A Bridge #3 crossing

Douglas Adams would approve of Swan’s use of that towel.

Another couple arrived later.

And the very next pic shows… two guys! I thought to myself, “You go, guys!” What a cute couple.

Good luck with today’s Hash.

All that remains

Hopefully, that spat is now done and dusted, and life can go on. I meant to say, in my previous comment, that those food pics were awesome, especially that one pulled-pork sandwich (I assume it was pork and not beef).

A day away

Looks to have been an awesome experience. I hope the ambiance facilitated the relationship therapy.

A turn for the better

re: “a relationship issue that managed to trigger us both for different reasons”

Still cryptic! But I won’t pry.

Good luck with the relationship-repair work. Bumps in the road are inevitable and normally surmountable… unless the trigger was some sort of deal-breaker, which it obviously wasn’t in this case. I’m hoping for lots of photos of your nipa hut.

A bad day

Hope it sorts itself out. And that “fearful” comment does not bode well.

Tuesday again

And then the sun did it’s disappearing act

Spot the error! (Not the missing period… I get why you did that.)

It was a pretty boring floater experience this week and we caught the raft back to the beach.

Spot the other error! And don’t eat the floaters. Or the sinkers, for that matter.

I really should stop with the attempts at correction. That whole ignorance/apathy thing you like repeating.

My nephew Joshua is an ordained minister in a Pentecostal church, although he teaches English in Korea these days. He also leans right, unlike his indoctrinated leftie brother, Justin.

At first, I was like, “What? The leftie is a Pentecostal?” Then I reread that you were talking about a different nephew. I get names like “Justin” and “Joshua” mixed up all the time. It’s the problem some of us Yanks have with Sweden/Switzerland and Austria/Australia.

Oh. I forgot about her. *ahem*

You will be a horny old goat until the day you die. I’m stuck between wonderment and envy. Guess I’m low-T.

A Hare-owing experience

I owe my fellow Hares a debt of gratitude for what proved to be a popular trail. Even the hard-liners expressed appreciation.

So they all sat on the ice!

I’m glad the Hash went well. Enjoy those sunsets.

And now I’m running dry

That’s one of the nice things about dementia–everything old is new again!

It’s hard for me to tell the difference between “revisiting the classics” and “having a geezer moment.” My inability to discern may itself be a function of old age. I turn 55 this year. The “old” Bruce Wayne we meet in The Dark Knight Returns is 55.

Pretty sure we’ve covered the Buddhist and the hot-dog vendor before. The rest of the joke goes something like this:

… so the Buddhist eats his hot dog and asks the vendor how much it was. “Three bucks,” says the vendor. The Buddhist hands him a five, which the vendor pockets. “What about my change?” demands the Buddhist. The vendor says, “Change comes from within.”

re: definition of hope

As long as she’s under 40, right?

May the Hashers enjoy your path.

Liquidated

Diarrhea! That’s been my life since coming out of the hospital and restarting the Newcastle diet. You have my sympathy. As for leakage in bed: I invested in the future a couple years back and bought myself a waterproof mattress cover just in case I should wake up from a nightmare about shitting the bed and discover I’ve really just shit the bed. I know that that day is coming, and it’ll mark a new phase in my life.

And some more smiling faces

That house makes me think of Key lime pie.

Good luck to the Hashers as they do your trail.

Wet with sweat

Those wheelchairs in the woods must be a bitch to take up and down hills.

Yeah, I’ve helped gals like her pay the bills. Mutually taking care of our needs.

Hopefully, you’re now out of the scuzzy period of your life.

re: SOB judging

As long as no one else finds out, I imagine you’re in the clear. But there are locals who do read your blog…

In the minority

I contributed a crockpot of meatballs and brownies.

I have never eaten that combination. Sounds delightfully gross.

Here’s hoping Swan had a mindful yahrzeit for Alan. Seventeen years is a long time. And they never married? Maybe they were doing the Kurt-and-Goldie thing—you know: “Why ruin a good thing by getting married?” And sure enough, Kurt and Goldie are still together. For some people, marriage is the curse that ruins couplehood. For others, it’s a happy and firm commitment.

Meandering

As always, a nice series of hike photos. Too bad about the heat, but as you’ve said, you get used to it. (I wouldn’t.)

Did we learn our lesson? I expect we’ll find out soon enough.

Crises reveal character.

re: charred paths

I imagine these are all controlled burns. Has there ever been one that’s gotten out of control?

Rough waters

That’s high, even by my low standards.

$385 a week???? Good Christ, your groceries cost as much as a mortgage! (A mortgage back in the 1990s, anyway.)

A roast chicken salad for me

If it’s going to be called a “salad,” the veggies ought to be cut thin and fork-friendly. I’ve taken to cutting down the green leaves in the salads I eat; Paris Baguette, the local bakery chain, serves salads but never cuts the leaves down. This means the top-layer leaves shield the lower layers from the dressing, which only ever sits on top of the salad, never penetrating. But when I cut the leaves down to size and toss, the dressing mixes in nicely. No more problem. It’s just too bad I have to do the cutting myself.

Yes, I mentioned “tossing salad” and “penetrating.”

At the Army Ball with Jee Yeun. It still hurts.

Then drag your ass to Korea and convince that woman to give you a divorce! Why live in agony? Amputate! Then move on. Don’t leave little hanging, dragging bits of your life all over the place. It’s unseemly. And I just don’t get the passivity. It’s going to get you in trouble eventually, and your life is a lie in the meantime.

This was the first time we’d seen Gasman on trail in several months (he’d been injured in a motorcycle crash)

And whatever happened to 18-Kilo-Ass? And that other—was he British?—dude who was super-slow and appeared exactly once, but who promised to work on his aerobic capacity and walk more with you guys? Did they both fade away?

I wasn’t at the back of the pack yesterday like I usually am.

In spoken or informal English, I guess this isn’t a serious error, but as an incurable pedant, I have to point out that “like” technically can’t be followed by a clause. So when people say “Like I said” (which, admittedly, they say all the time), they’re being grammatically incorrect. Instead of “like,” use some form of “as,” such as “as” (by itself), “as if,” “as though,” etc. You can also use other phrases, like “the way,” etc. So a possible rewrite might be:

I wasn’t at the back of the pack yesterday the way I usually am.

WRONG: Do it like Fred does it.
RIGHT: Do it the way Fred does it.

WRONG: Jen acted like she was enjoying it.
RIGHT: Jen acted as if she were enjoying it.

“Like” is okay for prepositional phrases, noun phrases, and noun clauses:

PREP. PHRASE: Now I want back—like in the deal.*
NOUN PHRASE: She keeled over like that nurse.
NOUN CLAUSE: “Do me hard,” she said, “like when we were in love.”

“Like” is not okay for other clauses:

WRONG: Kill her like you killed her brother yesterday.
RIGHT: Kill her the way you killed her brother yesterday.
RIGHT: Kill her as you killed her brother yesterday.

…so I left their treats on a table in the cubi hut outside.

I hope nothing melted.

Hash Gash (where does that name come from?)

I guess it’s better than “axe wound.”

Where global warming really comes from.

Giving a little

“it” = that scene, or that whole movie?

I’m going to guess the entire 1982 movie since it’d be strange just to miss a single scene. If you have a chance, please see “The Wrath of Khan.” It’s the best of all the Trek movies, the one where Spock dies (causing a ton of fan controversy), and it’s a “sequel,” of sorts, to the classic episode “Space Seed” from back in the 60s. Maybe watch “Space Seed” (1967) first. It guest-stars Ricardo Montalbán.

Star Trek: The Original Series is available via Amazon Prime (with new, enhanced CGI) or Paramount+. The movies are, from what I understand, all on Paramount+. You might be able to sign on for a “one week free” promo deal, binge watch, then cancel the deal before you have to pay. I did that to Disney+ for The Mandalorian, Seasons 1 and 2 (the only two good seasons).

Star Trek 2 is famous for one of the very first totally-CGI scenes, in which the so-called Genesis Device is explained to Kirk, Spock, and McCoy.

The Star Trek 2 scene in question is here.

You’re The Giving Tree!

Joy had the strangest looking lasagna I ever did see

Looks as though they put the Béchamel or cream/cheese sauce on top, but after baking. I think a lot of people prefer cheese on top for how it browns in the oven. Dumping cream on top post hoc makes the whole thing look stodgy.

re: “off” guy

How often do you encounter people who seem a little touched in the head? Here in Seoul, crazies are everywhere—so common that I don’t even bother to blog about them most of the time. I tend to think that crazy folks are more a feature of big cities. Or they’re at least more noticeable in big cities.

A commenter asked if there was more than one gated entrance to Alta Vista.

I was looking specifically at that one particular photo, and maybe it was an optical illusion, but it looked as if there were two entrances into your place. I’ll slap the photo on my blog, later, so you see what I mean.

Saucy!

One of the most meaningful exchanges in Star Trek 2, in which Spock gives Jim an old copy of A Tale of Two Cities as a birthday present… ruined for the sake of a meme!

Good luck with the walk, and keep on givin’! Salve that conscience!

Five plus five equals ten

10,000 steps: Home again

Are there two different gates to get into your place?

Next up, Outback

There was, once upon a time, a Korean chick I was friendly with, and she’d lived in Australia for seven years. I once asked her how the Outback was, and she said, “What’s the Outback?” She’d spent seven years in Sydney and had never learned about one of the most fundamental aspects of Aussie culture. Sounds like the foreigners in Itaewon who settle into the bars, speak only in English, and show no curiosity at all about Korean culture. Turtles tucked inside their shells, perfectly happy not to know what they’re missing. Sad.

I’m told it is a bar that caters to the Navy civilian crewman on those freighters in the bay.

Just the one crewman, eh? He must feel special.

Mother Nature sucks!

An alien choking on a dick or a lioness projectile-vomiting.

Enjoy your… feeding.

The walk of life

Oh, and I think you’ve done “Walk of Life” before because, if I remember correctly, I introduced you to the Walk of Life Project, in which the song is used as the ending credits for pretty much any movie.

Congrats on the weight loss!

Party like it’s 1999

Probably better to be as much off the grid as you can.

With a card reader right there, there’s no “handing over” anything to another person unless s/he rudely reaches down, pulls your card out, and hands it back to you—which I don’t like. (It does happen on occasion.)

» Posted By Kevin Kim On 20/April/2024 @ 3:27 pm

I’m glad the rooftop event went well. Sounds as though everyone had a good time, and even the weirdos who like chicken feet must’ve been happy with the selection. I hope everything either ran out or got taken home.

Rock on!

re: giving with two hands

As a sign of respect, it’s something you’d do when someone is of equal or superior social status, so you wouldn’t do it for kids unless you were being deliberately silly. I almost never do the two-handed thing at the cash register since I normally pay for everything by card.
