In recognition of Black Friday…
One of my classmates in grad school at Catholic U., an Irish priest named Michael McGrath, once told this joke:
The teacher looked out at the class and said, “Class, for this exercise, I want you to think a moment and then use the word ‘lovely’ twice in a sentence.”
After a minute or so of silence, the teacher said, “Glynnis! Give me a sentence.”
Little Glynnis stood and warbled, “On a lovely afternoon, I saw some lovely flowers.”
“Excellent!” the teacher beamed. “And you, Johnny? Have you a sentence, too?”
Johnny stood nervously, then said, “My sis came home one day and told me Da she was pregnant, and ’twas Sean O’Malley who done it. Me Da looked at me sis and said, ‘Lovely; fucking lovely.'”

I love it. The sign below the logo says “24-hour Convenience Store,” “24-shi pyeon-ui jeom.” It should really read “24-shi bul-pyeon-ui jeom.” (Bul-pyeon = difficulty, inconvenience.)

I can relate. When I lived in Europe, I never once missed American food. When living in Korea, I went through both good times and bad, but life in Seoul was never once boring. As I get older, though, I find myself gravitating toward a quieter mode of existence. Where I am now, at the foot of the mountains, isn’t a bad place to be. Now if only I could do something about those slowpoke yokels clogging up the highway when I need to rush to work…

I liked a lot of what was said in this letter, but was mightily disturbed by the ending. The threat to leave the country is one we’ve heard before– from the liberals, back when Bush II was at the helm. Some liberals even put their money where their mouths were and jetted off to France or Canada.
I’m not against leaving the country in order to find economic breathing room, but once it becomes a question of patriotism and loyalty, I take a dim view of those who willingly give up their citizenship instead of working to make this country a better place.
So: applause for the first 90% of that letter; daggers for the remaining 10%.

I guess you can’t catch every single mainland US state when you drive a loop like that. Looks as if they missed KS, MO, AR, TN, KY, WV, and pretty much all of New England. (Delaware, too?)
Perhaps the only way to hit all of the Lower 48 would be to drive a zigzagging “scribble” pattern. That would take a lot of gas.
