I love it. The sign below the logo says “24-hour Convenience Store,” “24-shi pyeon-ui jeom.” It should really read “24-shi bul-pyeon-ui jeom.” (Bul-pyeon = difficulty, inconvenience.)

I can relate. When I lived in Europe, I never once missed American food. When living in Korea, I went through both good times and bad, but life in Seoul was never once boring. As I get older, though, I find myself gravitating toward a quieter mode of existence. Where I am now, at the foot of the mountains, isn’t a bad place to be. Now if only I could do something about those slowpoke yokels clogging up the highway when I need to rush to work…

I liked a lot of what was said in this letter, but was mightily disturbed by the ending. The threat to leave the country is one we’ve heard before– from the liberals, back when Bush II was at the helm. Some liberals even put their money where their mouths were and jetted off to France or Canada.
I’m not against leaving the country in order to find economic breathing room, but once it becomes a question of patriotism and loyalty, I take a dim view of those who willingly give up their citizenship instead of working to make this country a better place.
So: applause for the first 90% of that letter; daggers for the remaining 10%.

I guess you can’t catch every single mainland US state when you drive a loop like that. Looks as if they missed KS, MO, AR, TN, KY, WV, and pretty much all of New England. (Delaware, too?)
Perhaps the only way to hit all of the Lower 48 would be to drive a zigzagging “scribble” pattern. That would take a lot of gas.

I’m sorry for your loss, John, but I’m not too surprised to learn that the day was an alloy of high points and low points. Death and life are wrapped up in each other, so I guess we take each moment as it comes, and find the perfection that shines through all the surface imperfections. On that note: congratulations to you and your son as he starts down the path toward fatherhood.

For what it’s worth, I feel your pain, John. I’m sorry that your return to the States wasn’t as pleasant as it could have been, and it’s horrible to read that your mother is in decline. But you’re doing the right thing by staying with her. Koreans would call you a “hyo-ja.” (Ask Jee Yeun what that means, and she’ll tell you it’s a good thing.)
