Stuff about things…

Sorry. Too many “probably”s. When I was young, my mother used to mispronounce the word by adding a syllable and changing the stress:

“pruh-BAH-buh-blee”

“Marching for what purpose I cannot say…”

As you’ve probably guessed by now, they were probably protestors agitating for Park Geun-hye to resign and/or to be impeached (on Twitter, this is being hashtagged as #Choigate or #ChoisunshilGate).

Great walk!

Regarding Thailand

An interesting and enlightening meditation. Thanks!

This day so far

How’re the leaves on Namsan’s trees? They changed over yet? Is the mountain all set for some fall strolling?

Back to reality…

Congrats on 27K steps!

Serious question: why not just retire in Korea? It’s a place you know well; there are plenty of nooks and crannies that will take a lifetime to explore, and Itaewon is your roost, your base of operations. I hope I’m not out of line in saying this, but my impression of your travels in SE Asia is that you’re looking for an echo of Itaewon wherever you go, so why not stick with the real deal? If you’re not planning to return to the States, Korea really isn’t that bad of a place to be, although personally, I’m still paranoid about the health care.

Almost like home

Sounds like a good, fun, educational trip. Congrats on winning at darts; maybe the Thai dart scene could use your Jedi powers. Any thoughts on moving there, or will Thailand forever remain a tourist destination? Your previous posts made it sound as though moving to Thailand isn’t in the cards, but that was a few days ago. What’re your thoughts now, at journey’s end? (And will we see a “Thailand vs. Philippines” comparative writeup?)

The King and I

Condolences to all of Thailand on the death of the king. Condolences to you, John, on the death of the bars.

Lola

This post was… educational. Please pardon me while I go wash out my eyes and brain.

Lost in Pattaya

All joking aside, that’s an impressive-looking omelet.

“When I travel alone I don’t usually go for the touristy stuff.”

I could say something here, but I won’t. Heh.

The adventure continues

I’ll be curious to see your pics of Pattaya. Enjoy your adventure! Oh, yeah: will there be any elephant-riding? And how’re the heat and humidity?

Steppin’ out in Bangkok

“And it was no surprise to discover that the language barrier here is huge. What little English the locals I’ve met speak is barely understandable. That’s just not the way I want to live in my adopted ‘hometown.'”

I suppose you could try learning Thai!

Anyway, have fun.

Spare your heart…

Ugh. Sorry to hear it, but I must say, I suspected something was up because of the lack of posting. Your silence spoke volumes. As you say, though, take things day by day. Thailand—Thighland, according to the “Hangover” crowd—beckons. Many young, nubile thighs await.

The weight

Wow. The 209-215 range is an achievement in itself. Going from 209 to 199 will mean losing mostly water, I suspect, plus maybe a bit of adipose. You’re moving into badass territory.

I know you’ve written before about reducing your middle. While “spot reduction” is a myth, you can nevertheless engage in Pilates to strengthen your core. Once your core muscles tighten up, the middle will reduce a bit, which is great as long as you keep in mind that you’re not seeing fat-reduction—you’re seeing only muscle-tightening. In any event, core exercises will produce a cosmetic effect.

Of course, if you strengthen even more muscle groups, you’ll gain muscle mass and increase your basal metabolism, which will indeed lead to more weight loss. Strength training may be how you’ll break through the plateau.

Go tell it on the mountain

Perimeter road! Yes, I recognized that location in one of the above photos!

She’s too young to have old lungs. Good luck converting her to the vape.

Two hours is not bad at all if this is her first time (in a long time) working out this way. She does look as though she works out, so I’m wondering—is it more diet plus yoga for her, or does she include any strength/cardio in her routine? Assuming she has a routine, of course… I could be totally wrong to assume she works out at all. The world is embracing skinny jeans these days, but many Korean women have long been blessed with skinny genes and don’t need to work out much thanks to high-revving metabolisms.

How was she on the uphill portions of her two-hour jaunt? My experience, in hiking with Korean women, is that they’re fantastic on the level stretches, often walking much faster and much more efficiently (in terms of body mechanics) than I do; I’d say a lot of them walk at or slightly above 4 miles per hour, while I poke along at exactly 3 mph. But put these same ladies on a hill, and they lose steam very quickly: mountain hiking is a combination of strength and cardio, and it’s the strength part that many of these ladies are lacking. You can see it in their musculature: thigh muscles are slim, even tight, but there’s little development there to indicate strength.

Seungmin utterly fit the stereotype: she did yoga, but almost no strength/cardio, so she was slim, flexible, and well-balanced, but had no oomph to get her up a long set of stairs or a long uphill path. It could be that she didn’t want to break a sweat—a prissy, feline tendency that many young Korean women also share. (God knows how many women, on the creekside path that I currently walk, stink of massive doses of perfume to eliminate any possibility of natural body odor. The denial is strong in these ladies.)

Anyway, it looks as though you have a new walking partner. I envy you. And if she keeps this up, she’ll soon be matching you pace for pace as you chug your way up those impossible, ass-kicking mountain stairs.

Hansum man

Talented, indeed! I’m curious—did she work from a photo, from you posing, or from memory? If the latter, she’s got a promising career as a police-sketch artist. However she worked, I’m impressed.

Sand to the beach (finale)

Thanks. I’ll be reverting to stupid mode again soon.

A great trip. Welcome back. That pork’s cross-section almost fooled me into thinking it was brisket!

Sand to the beach (part 2)

So this is where one sand grain met all the other sand grains. And war didn’t break out! Well—good for you! May you relieve much tension.

Sand to the beach (part 1)

“But in no airport I’ve been in anywhere in the world did customs search every fucking bag! I don’t know if this is something new or if they were looking for something specific based on a tip.”

Maybe Duterte’s looking extra-hard for smuggled drugs. But not in your backpack.

The journey continues

Congrats on being debt-free! By the way, your captions are consistently hilarious.

“I hope that means it was good.”

And again—Happy Birfday.

Big bad John…

Oh, and you’re back to “sam-gyap-sal”??

GYEOP! (Rhymes with “Yup!”)

Your lady will leave you if she hears “삼걉살.” Dogs will run howling, mice will spontaneously boil and explode, the ground will crack open, and demons with huge dicks will erupt out of the earth and skull-rape the populace.

“She’s certainly not like any other Korean female I have known attitude-wise.”

Some of the Korean women I know who seem somehow different from the norm are usually that way because they’ve lived overseas for at least a few years, thus internalizing different value systems and thinking “outside of the box.” Then again, I’ve met unusual Korean women who have little experience with living in the West, but they nevertheless appreciate what the West has to offer, and their personal values reflect that appreciation.

Anyway, it sounds as if you’ve got a good thing going. May it continue to blossom!

Free falling

Very nice pics of a very nice time. I envy you: Seungmin had many hangups, and one of them was that she never allowed me to take pictures of her, so all my happy memories are in my head, where they’ll eventually fade.

It’s all good

So is this the new cutie in your life? Congratulations. And kudos on a record-breaking walk regimen!

As for stairs: it takes me 10.5 minutes to climb 26 floors. The Namsan stairs, if I start at the library and go up to the summit, take me about 20-25 minutes, so that’s somewhere between 52 and, oh, 60 or so floors. It’s a pretty relentless trudge. If your FitBit’s accelerometers are measuring vertical displacement, it could be that they’re counting the foothill slopes before you reach the actual stairs. Those slopes aren’t easy, either, so kudos again.
