A tragic loss, the crock pot is. Good luck finding a replacement.
My boss gifted me with a very nice crock pot a few years back. Unfortunately, it developed a crack (and I missed the opportunity to make “crackpot” jokes), so I had to buy my own replacement. I didn’t want the boss to feel guilty, so I didn’t tell him about the breakage until a year or so later, when it came up in conversation. Anyway, my point is that, like Bill Clinton, I feel your pain.
Personally, I’d love to get an Instant Pot. Those things do everything. Maybe on my next trip to the States…

re: crime and perception of crime
I normally feel perfectly safe walking around Seoul. I never felt that safe in DC. As for European cities… big cities like Nice, Marseilles, Paris, Geneva, and Stockholm are fairly crime-ridden these days.
When I was in Paris last year, I got accosted by a beggar who tried to escalate his requests for money after I gave him a couple euros (he suddenly said he also needed 30 euros for a pair of shoes).
I didn’t experience any of the tourist nightmares caught on video, in which African guys drop a bracelet in your unwitting hand, then demand you pay for it. Then, when you try to give the bracelet back and step away, they accuse you of racism and surround you with some of their buddies. At that point, most tourists simply pay ten euros just to get the fuck out of there.
This is why the term “shithole” is being bandied about with ever-increasing frequency when people talk about Europe. Now, outside the big cities, Europe still looks and feels like Europe. But it’s a shame that the cities, which are centers of culture, are becoming unlivable—which is true in the US as well, if Portland, LA, San Fran, and Seattle are examples. Human shit, tent cities, piss odor, vandalism, and needles will be our legacy. Maybe they already are.
All of which is why your lovely photos of your local area are a relief to the eye. So much green. So many smiles.

I sympathize with the whole wet-shoes thing. Be glad your trek was under 10K. I was rereading my 2017 journal and came across the entry where I described how it had been raining all day, so I of course ended up with blisters after eight or nine hours of walking. That said, it’s always nice to get back to a dry place and tug/peel off one’s nasty footwear. One of the simple pleasures of existence.

If you lose running water, it might indeed be a good idea to collect some rainwater and also buy one of those hanging “solar showers” from the camp store. That’s basically a huge plastic bag that acts as a gravity-operated shower once you fill it with water.

Have you set up huge, plastic 55-gal drums to collect rainwater for home consumption? (I guess you’d also have to have some kind of purification/processing setup, too.)

I have to wonder how good a pie crust is after you microwave it. Normally, microwaving anything even remotely bread-related is a bad idea unless you’re trying to soften and rejuvenate stale bread.

Alas, I still support Gillette by buying their armpit deodorant. Well actually, a friend of mine who visits the Philippines twice a year buys the deodorant for me, then I pay him when we meet up in Seoul. I don’t know of a better brand for my skin, and deodorant is generally hard to find in Korea, but if I do find a better brand, I might make the switch just to stick it to Gillette.
Crap—I also use a Gillette Mach 3 razor.

Trump and Sharpton ought to settle their current differences by having some sort of weird-hair contest. I can imagine some strange, alternate-universe scenario in which their hairdos come alive and start screaming racist imprecations at each other.

In rereading my response, I see I didn’t really address the issue you raised. Yes, a pot pie is savory and pie-shaped; a meat pie tends to be mostly meat, although (as I think you discovered) it can have some veggies in it. Here’s a bunch of pictures of steak-and-kidney pie which, as you’ll see, are very meaty-looking. You prefer a good bit of plant matter inside your pies? I’m actually OK going almost all-carnivore.

Shape-wise, a pot pie looks like a good ol’ pie that’s served in a pie tin. A pasty is more of a “meat pocket,” if that doesn’t sound too Freudian. I.e., it’s the kind of pastry you can hold in your hand and gobble (if that doesn’t sound too Freudian). In fact, the pasty was originally conceived as a convenient, portable lunch for English workers.
Cornish pasties have fillings that include meat and vegetables, usually root vegetables like carrots or parsnips. There might also be potatoes, onions, and peas in there, sort of like the ingredients in a cottage pie (which isn’t a true pie). Here’s a pic.

I’d actually like to try making Jamaican beef patties (my favorite thing to get at 7-Eleven back in the States) and Cornish pasties (pronounced “PASS-teez,” not “PEYSS-teez”).
Meat pies tend to be mostly meat, and the meat shown in your above photos looks nice and tender (I hope it was nice and tender!). The English have their famous steak-and-kidney pie, which I love. At first, I was worried that the kidneys would taste gross, but they turned out not to have much taste at all; they mainly just add texture and volume to the meal.

If that’s the same Billy Goat Trail I’m thinking of, then I’ve done that trail! Great Falls Park? It’s an awesome path, and not nearly as dangerous as one might think. There are some parts where you’re either hand-and-footing your way over craggy rocks, or jumping from rock to rock (hence the trail’s name), but nothing that even an out-of-shape guy like me can’t handle. That said, hyperthermia can come about for any number of reasons; I’m sorry to hear this woman paid for her hike with her life.
Will be curious to learn the outcome of the police investigation into the murder-or-suicide. As you say: innocent until proven guilty.

I’m wondering whether that’s some sort of wolf spider (see more here). Wolf spiders come in all shapes and sizes; many are big-bodied, but some species have smallish bodies and long legs, like your house guest.

Silly John! Of course she’s right! The term “white,” after all, denotes neither a color nor a race! You can be racist against whites and still not be racist because that’s the asymmetrical (and hypocritical) dynamic the left has derived from postmodernist thinkers. Jacques Derrida talked about pairs of opposites (white/black, man/woman) in which the first element of the pair was the “privileged” one. This thinking bled out from academe into normal society. Fellow PoMo thinker Michel Foucault, following Nietzsche, claimed that society was a web of power structures that determine both authority and “truth” (always in quotes for postmodernists). So with whites presumably at the top of the social power structure in the West, racism can only flow downward; it’s never symmetrical. That’s the beast you’re dealing with; that’s the mindset you’re up against. Blame Nietzsche for this fucking mess; he had interesting things to say about reality and people, but ultimately, he’s one of the fathers of postmodernism, which lies at the root of PC culture.
Cleaning up academe by jettisoning most of its leftists is vitally important if we really want to see profound healing in America. But that’s not likely to happen anytime soon; the left dominates over 90% of every academic field except science, and even there, the PC cancer has begun to settle in (cf. scientific research on the correlation between race and intelligence). Really unfortunate.
Our best hope, for now, is to persuade young people to skip college and go to trade schools to pick up some practical (and very lucrative) skills. Practical reality is like garlic to the PC/PoMo vampire.
