Nada much

Catch me if you can!

There was a bar in Itaewon (can’t remember the name now) where the waitresses wore Che t-shirts as a uniform. I never went back.

A party was brewing

Soju, Good luck to us both, then!

Yeah, that kind of poverty stands out here, but it is run-of-the-mill shit in my “rich country” back home.

Damn, dude, you remember that Embassy photo? I cringe whenever I see it again. But you’ve got it wrong–if you are left-handed, you are in your right mind. Look it up–the science is settled! And dark beers need love, too. I live in a land of brown beauties, might as well drink it in!

Well said, Martin Luther Soju! You are the King—or at least the head Honcho.

DS, So, Wiener Schnitzel is German for “a girl with something extra”? Good to know!

» Posted By John McCrarey On 14/January/2024 @ 8:10 am

That’s a good point. When we walked by there today, Swan, who by her nature is very generous, wasn’t really sympathetic. She shook her head when she saw the newborn baby and said there is no excuse for having a kid when you can’t afford a place to live. And yeah, I briefly thought about maybe doing a mama thing, but I’m already supporting one family, and my charity budget is about maxed out.

Beach, please!

Brian, spending twelve hours with nothing to do seems nightmarish to me. I’d much rather be busy.

Regarding Mickey D’s, I was drunk enough that I wouldn’t know the difference, but my fuzzy recollection is that everything was tasty. Well, as tasty as McDonald’s ever is anyway.

Thanks for your patience in trying to teach this old dog new tricks!

Yeah, I figured it was a gecko when it tried to sell me insurance.

There is no deep or hidden meaning in the sunsets…their beauty alone is my inspiration. The banner is indeed a sunset.

Just another day in the life

It’s shocking that, as a Billy Joel fan, I have no recollection of ever hearing that song. I read up on it now, and it was a big hit in 1985. Sorry I missed it: catchy tune and a meaningful message.

Yeah, as I said, I was an asshole and in the wrong. Your point about dependency is well-taken. Hopefully, that bump in the road makes the rest of our ride together smoother.

Feeling like Royal tea

Kev, yeah, my laziness is the culprit here. Rather than rewrite the entire sentence, I only modified the portion AFTER the comma, leaving the first part unchanged. My failure to make that clear with ellipses or an explanation is yet another fuck up.

So, with that clarification, I’d say my one and three are correct. Number two is still wrong because “Pierre’s skills” are not a trained chef; Pierre is.

I’m a slow learner.

» Posted By John McCrarey On 11/January/2024 @ 4:25 pm

1. Barton had a long wait…
2. Pierre’s skills were prized by the restaurant
3. Aldous was familiar with the dank basement prison.

I kinda sorta get the concept of the dangling modifier. But my informal writing style most often mimics speech, and people tend to talk without considering if anything is dangling.

You won’t be surprised to hear that Grammarly doesn’t flag dangling modifiers, either.

Soju, yes, SBMA is designated a “free port,” so at least some of the imported goods sold there are duty-free.

Most of the imports are priced in dollars, not just the wine. It’s 55 pesos to the dollar now, but I still use the 50 peso rate for doing conversions in my head.

I brought a bag of Tostitos and Fritos home with me.

What? You think bananas grow on trees?

Come to think of it, my weekly bar expenditures are about the same as my grocery bill.

Hopefully, come November, we’ll have the last laugh. I don’t expect Biden will remain on the ticket. Looks like Michelle Obama wants the job.

That’s a good song. Nice that people are beginning to push back on the elites.

Yeah, I knew somehow that you’d react to the double entendre “floater” in a shitty way! 🙂

I haven’t seen a Der Weinerschnitzel since I left California in 1978. We do have Kenny Rogers’ Roasters here, though.

» Posted By John McCrarey On 11/January/2024 @ 12:46 pm

Brian, I have a water dispenser, and those big bottles are delivered to the house. The water I buy in the store is for hikes and on my bedstand. Easier that way.

My weekly grocery bill is more than I like to spend, but as long as I can afford it, I’m not going to deny myself the creature comforts I’m accustomed to. The imports are pricey, but I’m glad I have ready access to them.

Yes, I am truly blessed! 🙂

Kev, I’m an expert on getting old and senile, but I don’t recall featuring Danny in a photo on the blog before.

It’s cool that you got to experience the Shakey’s vibe growing up, too. I’m not sure why the chain has shrunk so much over the years in the USA, but it is very popular here. I’ve eaten at a couple, and the food was good, with much more than pizza on the menu. I still remember the Shakey’s commercials from childhood: “We serve fun at Shakey’s (also pizza).”

I don’t think the house is cursed; it’s probably just an ownership dispute. No, I wouldn’t move there now–I’ve paid my rent a year in advance, and I like this house. Property ownership is limited to Filipinos, but there are workarounds. Some guys put the land in the wife’s or girlfriend’s name (very risky). Another option is a long-term lease on the land (25 years or more) and then building a house (you can own a home, just not the land). Similar for businesses, foreigners form a corporation and a Filipino owns 51%, and legal documents give the foreigner the power to run the company.

I didn’t taste the sauce, but I expect it was gravy.

I’m glad you enjoyed the shopping experience at Royal!

Kev, you got me on this one–no idea what the error might be.

» Posted By John McCrarey On 11/January/2024 @ 7:39 am

Danny’s been driving me around for almost six years now without any issues, so he’s earned my trust. He’s actually a good family man.

Slogging on

“That sentence is perfect… except for the errors.”

HaHa! Was that a mistake? 🙂

» Posted By John McCrarey On 10/January/2024 @ 7:43 am

Kev, that sentence is perfect unless you are talking about the missing semi-colon after motorbikes and the failure to place a comma after access.

Ah, I was being facetious about the trespassing. She was very friendly even before the cookies.

Tiny Cunt is in the first picture–the guy with the towel on his head giving instructions to the group. The guy in the green shirt is Captain Prickhard.

Yes, it literally is at the road’s end.

Good and sweet

Nope, no pun intended. Just sloppy writing that my muddled brain failed to detect.

Actually, I’ve been impressed with Swan’s comfort level around the females I know in the bars. Even when she made that comment in Wet Spot, she did so apologetically for thinking I might be up to no good. She doesn’t get upset if I buy lady drinks for my servers, either. I think she looks at it like I do–just a way to show kindness and generosity to someone who works hard at a tough job.

As for the feeding, I don’t see it any differently than handing out candy to the kids. It’s a small thing for me, and the girls look forward to it. I consider Joy a friend (I’ve known her for three years, the last two platonically). The other gals at Hideaway are not attractive to me in any way because of their shape and form. (ahem).

Swan knows about the feeding and has raised no concerns or objections. If she ever wants to attend, I would bring her. Anyway, I don’t expect this to be an issue with Swan, and I will certainly never engage in any behaviors that might be construed as cheating.

Soju, I heard only pussies go to a vagina fight. Just sayin’.

Structural integrity? What the hell is that? This is the Philippines, after all.

I have no idea if those were Korean-style corndogs. Nothing like I’d ever seen before.

Good song. But in Swan’s defense, when she told me what she was thinking, she did so apologetically. Hard to get upset about that.

The real McCoy

No, it didn’t make me sleep, but it created a mist in my brain that was a full-blown fog by the time I finished reading. But there is peace in ignorance.

» Posted By John McCrarey On 08/January/2024 @ 9:57 am

Brian, how I remember a fifty-year-old song and forget the name of the person sitting next to me is quite a mystery. But I’m glad I did!

Yes, drama-free is my preference for the end years. Let’s see if I’m capable of pulling this off…

» Posted By John McCrarey On 08/January/2024 @ 6:21 am

Kev, I am not familiar with the subject(ive), but in my head, I corrected the wish with “were,” so I guessed right.

No, the chip base in that “taco” tasted okay. What was served wasn’t what I expected, but it filled a void, so mission accomplished.

I’m still taking the relationship a day at a time, but the lack of drama is a blessing. It kind of feels like God is saying, “This is what you prayed for, don’t fuck it up!” Of course, Satan is on my other shoulder, whispering in my ear…

» Posted By John McCrarey On 08/January/2024 @ 5:46 am

Wow! I’m going to go make me some nachos right now. Except I’m going to use Ruffles.

It’s all part of the adventure, right?

Going places

Well, I meant on the difficulty scale for trails to the top of Kalaklan; this was the easiest I’ve found. That doesn’t make it easy, though. But yes, before regaining some lung capacity, I likely wouldn’t have even tried.

» Posted By John McCrarey On 07/January/2024 @ 3:27 pm

Cemetery parkour: An impressive mixture of talent and disrespect. Even doing the hike through seemed a little off (we had to climb over a couple of graves to get through). On the other hand, I was surprised to see that the litter culture was alive and well. It appears people would snack while visiting the deceased and just leave their trash behind. SMH.

Re: AlJohn, in my mind, I inserted a comma.

I guess I’ve been blessed, but wet shoes have never caused me a blister problem. That sand might have with more distance, but I triked home as soon as we left the beach.

No, I don’t have a sifter, but I can see what you mean, and it would probably work. But the image of those critters in my brain would persist and likely ruin the pleasure of eating a blueberry muffin.

I generally prefer an upward trail to steps, but the ones on this hike were evenly spaced and in decent condition, so it wasn’t bad. I thought the climb to the ridge on this hike was one of the least difficult I’ve experienced.

» Posted By John McCrarey On 07/January/2024 @ 5:55 am

Let’s go!

Thanks, James. So far, so good. But I’ve got a history of screwing up the good thing.

Yes, we give each other space and share some common activities. Swan is kind and loving, qualities I’d been missing.

I’m trying to avoid being “shameless.” 🙂

» Posted By John McCrarey On 07/January/2024 @ 3:24 pm

Joe, I’ll go out tonight and punish myself with copious amounts of alcohol. That’ll teach me!

» Posted By John McCrarey On 06/January/2024 @ 8:30 am

Kev, thanks for the lesson on “nee.” I misunderstood its meaning and its application. And I named my daughter Renee. Go figure. Nay works just fine for future applications.

Regarding the popsicles, I meant to say lollipops. I really rushed through that post because I had a meeting, but I knew something was wrong when I did a brief proofread, but my Biden-brain couldn’t grasp what it was.

Someone was burning leaves, so God appeared in the sunlit smoke.

Yes, indeed, I did dangle that damn modifier. Not sure I can blame that one on the rush job–it is just another example of sloppy writing. I’ll try and do better!

» Posted By John McCrarey On 06/January/2024 @ 7:22 am

Brian, I’ve got one she could use; I’ll ask her next time. I carry extra sweets in my backpack and we refill her bag as needed, so it is not too heavy at least. And taking off the pack every time you do a handout is a pain, too. Up to her.

» Posted By John McCrarey On 06/January/2024 @ 7:08 am

Any which way

I wonder how that happened. I guess old habits die hard, but probably what threw me was that it wasn’t a case of “I wonder” but of someone else wondering. I can see now that it makes no difference. I wonder: will I make that mistake again? Hopefully not.

Yeah, I changed position frequently throughout the hike. Mostly because I’d pause to take a photo (or a piss). Speed-wise, we all march at about the same pace.

Got it–straight face or pursed lips from now on!
