Ok, at first I was about to take Jeff to task for calling me a lightweight while responding to one of the multitude of spam comments I have not as yet been able to eliminate. I found that ironic.
I just didn’t understand why he was so pissed (or interested in my genitals). Or why he thought I hated dissent and secretly censored. So, I cheecked the comment queue for an email address for Jeff, and discovered comment #4 which for some reason had been captured as spam (when my so called filter lets the most vile porn messages through, go figure).
Anyway, at least I understand why he felt censored. I have not once deleted or otherwise altered any comment to this blog disagreeing with me. Just so you know.
And I sign every post (and comment on other blogs) with my full time. So, I’m not afraid to stand behind my opinions.
I’m going to put Jeff’s inital and follow-up comments up as a blog entry and see if it generates any debate. I like that. Of course, I have about 3 people who read this “lightweight” blog, so I’m not expecting much.

Yeah, those soldiers did that pose and never flinched…UNLESS you did something stupid. The shiny helmest, dark sunglasses and clinched fist stance are all about intimindation. Prior to the tour you have an orientation on what you can and can’t do…there is even a dress code. Mostly you can’t provoke the Norks, take photos in certain locations, or respond in anyway should the Norks try to provoke you.

Yes, I know exactly how Robertson, Falwell and their ilk would react. That’s my point. There would be holy outrage, to be sure, but you would not see Christians in the street burning embassies and screaming death to infidels.
It’s time we get off the moral equivalence bandwagon and recognize that this people will never be appeased. We give up our freedoms and way of life or we take a stand now and say enough.

Well, it was good judgment that kept me from responding. Whatever my transgressions, I can’t blame them on beer. Anyway, I’m doing my penance here that’s for sure. Me being old and fat and Korean women’s general lack of interest in sex has kept me out of trouble. It’s a curse and a blessing I suppose.
To be honest, I thought you had posted as anon, Carol. Guess my character flaws have been exposed to the world. Ah well.

Yes, it is call your shot. Other rules include hitting your ball first and SOME ball must hit a rail (or pocket)afterwards. Violation of that rule results in a “ball in hand” penalty which means your opponent can place the cue ball anywhere on the table prior to his/her shot. Missing altogether or inadvertantly touching another ball while making a shot also results in ball in hand. Thankfully I’m getting fewer penalties these days. No, I didn’t play much in the States and hadn’t played in probably 10 years before coming here. So, I’m really just learning the game. And I’ve come to realize my geometry is poor indeed.
“Rachel” speaks pretty good English and we had her “try on” each of the names to make sure she could pronounce it well. She’s got the “r” sound down so she should be okay (hmm, unless the Koreans call he Lacheel). Anyway, I loved the way she said Bonita but alas, my darts did not win out.
Avery is one of my daughters. She’s been attending university in Hawaii. Smart and cute. She will go far in life!

Actually, I’m not sure that I blame the border guards for their reaction (although I was pissed at the time). I think it was a combination of the times and our appearance. And you are right, I hope they would treat a long haired follower of Osama in a similar fashion today.
Like you I find distance makes politics seem less important or relevant. I still care, I just don’t get really fired up about things these days.

Well, Anonymous your comment is so special. I note that you don’t even address the issue at hand. So it’s fair to assume that even a Bush hating liberal like yourself cannot defend the ignorance of the mad Dr. Dean.
You talk of the harm to this great nation caused by the administration, but cannot fathom the harm being proposed by the leader of Dems.
Just so you know, even in my ignorance I can see the harm done to America. I’ll never forget the images of the twin towers in flames, and I witnessed the carnage at the Pentagon. The current administration declared war on terrorism. The party you support is calling for surrender.
So if I am the ignorant one, then yeah, ignorance IS bliss.

Well, I am baking a frozen pumpkin pie. The fruit salad though requires my special touch.
I guess TG has been my favorite because it is the big feast celebration where the focus is on friends and family (and gluttony) and nothing else. I enjoy smelling the turkey in the oven the pie and ice cream for dessert, the inevitable after dinner nap, and then starting in on the leftovers and doing something cheesy like watching “it’s a wonderful life”.
Yeah, the bar situation was unusual for me, but then I don’t often sit a drink with Korean men so I don’t know how abnormal it was. Although I don’t recall them touching each other. Anyway, not so much in Seoul, but when you get out of the city people do take an interest (if blantantly staring and pointing denotes interest) in the appearance of Westerners. I don’t know that you get used to it, but I just try to ignore it.

Well, I fixed the car. It’s high mileage, so that’s a risk, but it was a one owner car brought from the states and reasonably maintained.
I’d love a new car though. If I had one I might actually venture out on the highways more. Then again, it is nice to have no payment and cheap insurance. And you can’t drive to Thailand….

I think it is a combination of factors, SJA. First the KEU is a “real” union. Federal unionists like to pretend and play at being united for the common good, but rarely have I seen them rise above selfish self-interest. A good example is the resources they expend trying to protect the lazy and incompetent. “Real” unionists recognize that a bad worker hurts them as much as the organization.
But personality plays a part too. Mr. Kang, the KEU president is a brillant man and a great politician. He knows when to be aggressive and he knows when to be accomodating. At the mediation he talked tough, but that was necessary to show that he was vigorously representing his membership. Despite the rhetoric, when it became clear we had gone as far as we could to reach a deal, he was willing to accept half a loaf. Maybe it is not personality so much as character. He has a sincere desire to protect his workers, but he also knows that to do that he needs to maintain a positive working relationship with management. He is a master at working both ends and he consistently gets positive results by doing so.
The best way I can describe Mr. Kang is for you to think of the complete opposite of Ben. Got it?

I’m not sure it is brave, I just needed a way to let the pain go, and LTG was my way of doing it.

I think that some things are so bad they can and do outweigh all the good. Reaching that point is based on an individuals personal capacity. As to the respect issue, my perspective is that a person’s ability to forgive, accept the past, and move on is worthy of the ultimate respect. Now, it would be wrong to take advantage of a person’s capacity for forgiveness, but that is not an issue of respect–rather that is a character flow of the person taking advantage.
