Yeah, the difference is Americans tend to obey most traffic laws and normal safe driving practices. Not so much here. Vehicles passing on the shoulder where I’m walking is one of my pet peeves. Pedestrians are low man on the totem pole–you are expected to get out of THEIR way.
Canadian Joe got squashed just a couple of nights ago.

Oddly enough, biting bugs have not been a problem at all. Some buzzing bugs sometimes doing their “let’s get in his ears” thing once in a while. And an occasional ant, but nothing like ticks or other blood suckers. Hell, even surprisingly few mosquitoes, although I do slather on the Off before heading out.
Now, that tall grass itself can be irritating to skin and sometimes sharp. Some of the guys wear those Hash knee socks for that reason but I find them hot and uncomfortable.

Yep, I learned Rule #1 the hard way! In retrospect the oven was a much better option (it’s a gas oven, wouldn’t have been a problem after manually lighting it). And could have done the frying pan thing I suppose. Should have just put everything in the fridge and waited until I was ready to cook dinner (this was still like 10 a.m.) Ah well, live and learn. Thanks for the tips!
Yeah, camp cooking is a whole other animal for sure. Back in the day I had me a nice two burner Coleman stove. These days I’d probably go “camping” in an RV.

Well for generations the Catholic church has dominated politics, hence the restrictions on abortion and divorce. I think birth control was also illegal until just a few years ago. I know some of that is church doctrine but I wonder if the elites have some other motivation–keeping the people poor and uneducated perhaps makes them easier to control? Who knows, but I’m glad to see things changing, albeit slowly.

Yes, I can’t vouch for the accuracy of the add-ons. I agree that India must be the leader in beggars. Honestly, it is not a big problem where I live, although in Angeles City it’s a constant irritation. And I read that since China stopped taking trash, Vietnam is the new “leader”. The point about the PI is that the locals trash the streets with impunity.

I’m not sure it’s legal for a foreigner to carry a machete (we are not allowed to posses weapons). I do encounter Filipinos on the trail occasionally wielding machetes. Makes me just a tad nervous. But yeah, hacking down grass and branches would make life easier…

Seriously though, I can make a few things that look and taste good but require very little skill to prepare. Those ribs? A few hours in the crockpot and then 30 minutes in the oven for the glaze of bbq sauce–just like you taught me!

Seriously though, I’ve been a bit unfair to the dogs, expecting them to be on my schedule. Since most of the time the “accidents” happen when I’m not around or I’m asleep it’s hard to blame them I guess if they just can’t hold it any longer. So I’m getting better at putting them outside on a regular basis and so far so good.
Soju, the thing about those pads I don’t like is that it seems to encourage them to do their business indoors. I’ve got this thing from some childhood trauma that makes me really have a reaction to poop in the house. Long story that. Anyway, when they do go it is usually in the same place. And my domestic helper has to do the the clean up, bless her heart…

Yes, although I didn’t know about the ones Amazon sells. Was thinking of making my own with some plastic ribbon and kebab sticks. And yes, I would go back the next day and remove them to avoid a “littering on trail” violation. Thanks for the tip!

His name was Tom Stone. Former Navy diver. Turns out he was a Hasher back in the day “Divers Do It Deeper”. I’m adding a photo to this post.
Yeah, they do love their icons here. What gets me is the time, effort, and expense involved in setting up that shrine in such a location. The nearest house is at least a kilometer away.
Maybe condolences on being named Hare are more appropriate. It’s gonna be a pain in the ass finding a trail or an alternate that will be passable in a monsoon. And then marking it in a way that’s waterproof. I’m thinking I may tie some “yellow ribbon round the old oak tree” so to speak…
