Kevin, yeah the theory on the film title makes sense. The guy from the story I quoted was on vacation and suffered a heart attack while driving in Thailand. He was hospitalized for several months, Fell in love with his nurse, got married, and never left. Les choses de la vie!

Thanks for the corrections to the poor French examples I used. Here’s the paragraph where I found “les choses de la vie” for context:
“Patrick did not come to live here by choice or careful design. Why then did he end up living here for close to 20 years? One could call it destiny, karma or simply by Patrick’s own reckoning; “les choses de la vie” (the choices life makes for you). An accurate description as he is a proud Frenchman to the core of his heart. Perhaps the main reason his local language skills have never surpassed the very limited bargirl Thai and his English was at best jolty. Our conversations therefore are always conducted to this day in the more melodious language of Molière, Rousseau and Voltaire.”
The writer of the above claims to be a French speaker, but maybe it’s not his first language. Who knows?
As for “Un arbre dans la forêt”, the writer claimed that was a book of short stories written by a Monk. It wasn’t translated, so I plugged it into Google. Somehow yesterday I got the result for “l’arbre qui cache la forêt” even though I searched for “un abre dans”. So I used what Google gave me–The tree that hides the forest. This morning I searched un abre dans and got the correct translation: a tree in the forest. Strange.
Anyway, fascinating stuff. Once I’ve mastered English I can start butchering other languages as well!

Yeah, he’s not a bad guy in “real” life. Even invites me to his place for parties now and then. I’ve only attended one because that’s not really my thing. I’ll ask at the local German bakery (that also sells sausages) if they have Currywurst…

Dan, Glad you asked–Club stands for “chicken and lettuce under bacon”. You can look it up, I just did!
The breakfast menu was pretty much limited to Filipino delicacies which aren’t my thing (I don’t do rice). And a club often has the same ingredients as a traditional breakfast, just arranged differently. Yeah, it was a lot of calories but I only managed to eat 3/4 of the sandwich and just a few fries. And it turned out to be my only real meal of the day. It was 0800 so it wasn’t hard to take a pass on the beer. Coffee washed it down just fine!

Kevin, Yes, the strawberries were great. Finished them last night. I don’t recall ever buying Korean strawberries, I’d get American imports from the commissary (now that’s something I miss!).
I recall reading somewhere that Koreans are the largest expat community in the Philippines. They literally own much of Angeles City these days. The old Navy base has a good-sized contingent as well. Lots of Korean restaurants, churches, and other Hanguel signage. I’m guessing I was in Baguio’s Korea town, maybe us Hashers kept the K-folk undercover!

Ha! I had totally forgotten about “High Anxiety”. That definitely would have been a better fit given the comedy of my fears.
Yes, I don’t think there is much rational about these kinds of things. It just gets in your head about what COULD happen and the knees go weak. I recall taking Se Hwa to the states. One day she achieved her dream of skydiving and the next day we went to the Grand Canyon. They had one of those glass bottom walkways out over the canyon and she was on her hands and knees. It was pretty hilarious.

Man, your eyes are SO much better than mine. I hadn’t noticed any fuzz. Women here (in my limited experience) don’t shave as often “down there” as their counterparts in the west. Me, I’m just happy to get some!

Dan, Günter is Austrian and the hills around here don’t fulfill his need for Alps-like climbs. So he tends to have us go up and down several times. How efficient is that?
Last I heard Graham is back in Scotland being cared for by his sister. The bar and restaurant seem to be doing quite well these days.

I don’t think there is a point. No, I’m not the spiritual advisor (that position is vacant right now in our kennel). I’m not sure if there was talking of impending doom before that Hash or not, could just be part of Moaner Boner’s twisted sense of humor.
Moaner has a slew of shirts he designs for himself. When I saw his “Detainment Run” creation I wanted one for a souvenir.

Yeah, I couldn’t get a clear shot of all the contestants. I don’t remember who got the runner-ups award. Ailyn is definitely a hottie. Not bad for having two kids. Personality-wise she leaves me cold. Living with another Hasher and I actually pity him.

Yes, people normally acquire the lots then have a house of their design built. I’ve seen some occasionally out there overseeing the work. There is one house recently completed that is for sale now. Apparently the owner decided he didn’t want to live here after all. That happens more frequently than you’d think. People just reach a breaking point with the frustrations of living in a third world country.

Adventures in grocery shopping
That’s the important thing! Although it may come as a surprise that I very rarely drink beer at home. I keep some in the fridge for the occasional guest but that’s it.
If I recall correctly, Reekay had a post about Landers in Cebu City. Never been to one though.

Yes and no. I used to go to S&R in San Fernando once a month. They have a much better selection, especially in frozen foods and meats. But it seemed that every time I went the item I most craved was out of stock. Finally, I just gave up (it was an expensive trip paying my driver). I do like the store though and would like to go back once in a while. Maybe in conjunction with a trip to Angeles City…

Yes, it’s a public store. I guess it’s called Royal Duty Free because it is in the freeport zone and their imports are not subject to duty. Presumably.

Thanks, Kev. Good to know. I suspected that most of the world drinks milk this way. I know my Filipino friends think it is weird that I want “fresh” milk from the dairy case.
And you are right, the taste is fine. The “brick” milk seems a little thinner, so I assume that the enhanced pasteurization you mention removes some of the fat. I’m getting used to my new normal and it is cheaper, so it will work.
