High speed rail

I know his hand and that is not his hand. However, judging from the bag of beef jerky he was there and probably behind the camera.

North Korea welcomes Americans?

Ah but as you pointed out this could be a good thing. Here is your chance to act as an ambassador of goodwill-the model American far removed from their preconceived expectations. It would require diplomacy. You can’t talk bad about their government. However, you can be extremely diplomatic when you want to be. Hmmm perhaps this blog is your outlet since I’m sure you have to be oh so diplomatic at work.

Better late than never

Good Luck! I’m impressed. My stop date for smoking is February 4th but I have stopped and started about six times since July. Hopefully with medication and a support group-yeah I signed up for one-I’ll make it this time.

Methinks thou dost protest overmuch

The Harry Reid thing is all over the news. The Bill Clinton thing is all over the news. Probably why its all over the news is because of the shit storm being kicked up by Republicans. Oh wait you said there would only be a shit storm if it had been said by a Republican. Gee I guess you called this one wrong.

I think Clinton’s remark was racist. I think Harry Reid, like Trent Lott, wasn’t trying to be racist. Acknowledging that Clinton’s remark is racist I must also say I am not surprised he said it. Racism is far from being a thing of the past and even when a person is not overtly racist the truth is it colors our perceptions. It will take another generation or two for that to be eradicated.

As for you, well you are still an angry niddle-age white guy. Look at your timing. These comments are old and are receiving a breath of life because of the new book by the author from The bAtlantic Monthly. Republicans (you included) have decided now is the time to create a new scandal, another distraction from the real business of governance.

Its like you can’t think for yourself. If you had been thinking for yourself you might have paused to reflect back on some of your own comments. How about when you said that your wife having an opinion that differed from your own was a sign of disrespect. That is about as sexist as you can get. Oh yes remember your opinion on older drivers? I can’t wait to see if that changes when you hit 65.

Under the Dome

I can go one better–it is forgettable. The Stand, It,Pet Cemetary, these stories get inside of you and simply don’t go away. Four months from now you’ll have to take a moment to recall what Under the Dome was about. Still I did add a hard copy to the King collection. I suggest you read the Dark Tower series if you haven’t done so. Seriously excellent.

Speaking of excellent, if you get the chance go see Avatar Imax 3-D is a must. Awesome!

New Year Yoja

Corn pones, rice, sweet potatoes and a banana pudding. Oh yes and pork chops. There were some nonsoutherners present who I’ve noticed do not consider black-eyed peas and ham a meat dish.

A new Great Seal of the United States of America

Please, you are not the only one capable of making a play on words.

I am sure Kevin was being tongue in cheek. I wasn’t. Its not just your decision to never return to America, its the things you write on this blog. Outside the members of your family, you seem to only attract the fringe elements. There is no room for middle ground. Moderate is labeled liberal meaning evil communist/socialist immoral. You do not use logic or humor to make your points but scathing vitriol.

You were in attack mode when your party was in office. You are in attack mode now that your party is out of office. You rarely find anything good to say about America. By and large you would dump better than half of us off the deep end of the ocean. After getting rid of most of the women, Catholics, people under the age of 30, Democrats, blacks, muslims and a significant portion of the other minorities (presumably you would opt to keep the asian women provided they all think and act like Michele Malkin) I still doubt you would elect to return. What kind of society would it be when made up primarily of angry scared middle age white men? Who would you blame for your shortcomings, your fear? Who would be your scapegoat?

Those of us who are not afraid to face a changing future, who are not afraid of making sacrifices, we are the ones who will keep this country strong. Not you naysayers. You have no vision. You live in the past and you’ve distorted that.

You know Frank, the Taliban and Al queda etc., do not hate Afghanistan or Iraq or Iran etc. They just want things to stay the same as they were 2000 years ago. Change is inevitable. Globalization requires us to rethink issues such as health care which is a terrible drain on private industry and prevents American companies from being competitive.

I am going to assume you are middle class. Without social democracy there would be no middle class in America. Without change our middle class will not survive globilization. Doing nothing is what will strip this country of its greatness. The party of do nothing may very well take the election in 2012 but unless they embrace change and find solutions then they will not hold office for long.

John works for the government because it pays well not because of an outsized sense of patriotism. He is an ex-patriot and that word says it all.

Did I mention it was cold?

I have no idea what the temperature is right now. Mid twenties I suppose but the snow! I have never been in so much snow! It started last night and it is still falling. We have a good foot and half. Stafford is in the middle of a blizzard. I’ve never seen a blizzard before! It is suppose to be thunder snow but I haven’t heard any thunder yet. I think that is suppose to come this afternoon. No plows have run yet what would be the point. It is snowing its ass off! I am totally caught up in it right now but at some point I am going to have to shovel the driveway. I’ll think about that tomorrow. Today I am just going to enjoy this unreal snowfall.

You can’t handle the truth

Oh Jeepers what a load of crap! Instead of hiding behind bs those of you who are not in favor of health care reform should at least be honest about why you don’t want it. It isn’t because you are worried that it will erode the level of health care you receive or that it will keep new and wonderful drugs or devices from being invented. People and companies invent these things to make money and they will still make money so health care reform isn’t going to stop progress.

You don’t want to pay for someone else to get medical care pure and simple. You don’t want your taxes to go up. Just say it. It sounds callous but at least its honest.

Things I don’t miss…

Sorry it looked like the issue was your allegation that the US is a nanny state not the fact that the mission is throwing out food. The next paragraph in the article quotes another organization -a soup kitchen -that accepted a load of food from a deli going out of business which they did not throw out. It concluded with the fact that less than 5 % of donated food contains trans fats. Sounds like we are missing a piece of the story. In any event the decision of the mission to throw out donated fried chicken from a local church -even if that decision was actually prompted solely on the fear that the chicken might have been fried in trans fat hardly paints the picture that the new law is reducing the cities ability to feed its poor or reduced contribtions.

» Posted By Fortuneate On 29/November/2009 @ 8:06 am

I googled your story to fact check it. It was such a small story in such a small online rag that it apparently didn’t merit any chatter. Moreover, I could not find any similar stories. Usually you see a story get picked up over and over by different news services. I did see a lot of reports-the most recent by Forbes-that the ban was successful. The sky didn’t fall down, profits weren’t lost, diners could tell the difference or any other of the dire predictions of the naysayers.

People I know do not voluntarily eat lard a common form of trans fat. Rather lard turns up in food we buy –primarily baked goods in order to extend the shelf life. That is done to extend the profit margin. How is telling businesses that you are no longer allowed to make a profit off of making people sick a bad thing? We do not allow the meat industry to sell rancid meat or the dairy industry to sell sour milk or allow restaurants to use such in their food prep.

Turkey time!

There is a commercial running in the states right now that shows shot after shot of every day things that look like two eyes and a mouth. Maybe its because I have seen that commercial so many times (it is cute) that upon seeing that turkey I instantly saw two eyes (what are those things–cucumbers with a cherry tomatoe?) and an mouth (the edge of the turkey below the “eyes” that seems to be relaying “oh shit”. Hope your Thanksgiving is better than this turkey’s.

My son is home, all 6′ 189 lbs of him, and my girls will be in Wednesday. We have a lot to be thankful for.

That’s gonna leave a mark…

That we are willing to provide to him the jurisprudence protections afforded to an American in a completely transparent proceeding exonerates us. Its a bold move and if we get a conviction no one will be able to say he did not get a fair trial. This trial is going to be so much more fair than anything he could have received in the Muslim world that it will derail his bid for martyrdom in a way that a military tribunal could not.

» Posted By Fortuneate On 24/November/2009 @ 5:03 am

Military tribunals were used during and after the Civil War until the Supreme Court ruled them unlawful where a functioning civil court existed. The case was Milligan 1866.

The eight Germans were spies of a country with who we were at war. Trying in them in a tribunal was challenged but the Supreme Court upheld the decision. Clearly a distinction can be made.

Holder decided to send the 5 accused Cole bombers before military tribunals because they attacked a military target. Kahlid masterminded an attack on a civilian target and you know I admit that is seriously splitting hairs.

Still, the main concerns for not trying thsi guy in a civil court appears to be 1) there will not be enough evidence to convict him 2)US torture tactics will be placed on trial and 3) he provides him with a forum to protray himself as a martyr. We all know it is harder to get a conviction in a civil court but even if we fail to get a conviction we have the right to confine the guy indefinitely. For the sake of our country I think we need a public trail to exonerate the us of the alleged torture practices and I am not worried that this guy is going to get a forum to make himself appear to be a martyr. That is what Mousaoui thought and he just came off as a jackass.

“Jihad is not proclaiming war?” No not the way you mean it. It can be a proclamation to defend a Mulsim community/religion but it also refers to an inner stuggle against evil. Kevin is right it wasn’t an action taken in the course of a war but an act of terrorism.

The lines have been blurred here with rhetoric such as if Bin Laden were captured today would you give him Miranda rights? If he is captured on a battlefield its war and the military law applies. If he is picked up in Pakistan (like Kahlid) or Germany by either the US or another government and extradited to America then he gets the same treatment as any other criminal.

Lindsay Graham showed he still has the stuff of a great cross examiner by asking questions that could not be answered as asked-a great cross examination trick. Holder was no doubt thrown for a loop that Graham would misrepresent the situation as he did knowing the law as he most certianly does. You expect it from an defense attorney or prosecutor. It is the kind of game they play in courtroom battles but Holder could not “do battle” with Graham without looking very disrepectful of long-term Senator.

Change you can believe in

However, they held the Executive Branch for 8 years before Obama took office– the period of time that set off the current economic meltdown. I know you like to refer to the President as “The One” but it is simply unrealistic to expect him to turn things around in one year.

» Posted By Fortuneate On 09/November/2009 @ 9:42 am

Heresy

Indeed there is but you left America with no intention of returning several years ago before anyone even dreamed Obama would be elected and a Bush/Cheney held the White House.

» Posted By Fortuneate On 09/November/2009 @ 11:14 pm

Wow! You finally called him “the President” instead of that snarky “The One.”

A patriot? Patriot is defined as a person who is devoted to and ready to support or defend his country. You are clearly not devoted to America.

Is there some kind of requirment to turn your brain off in order to join the –wait what movement do you belong to exactly? You aren’t a true conservative. You aren’t really a neoconservative except when it comes to national security. You certainly aren’t a progressive or a liberal. So what are you just a general naysayer? If Obama said the sun rises in the East would you argue no it rises in the West because it feels like you would.

Any why are you so down on this man? Is it because he is a Democrat? Because he is black? Because he is younger than you and managed to become President of the greatest country on earth despite his background? You are just one big sour grape, hugh sour grape and one has to wonder what drives your poisonous pen.

Obama believes in this country and he believes in his vision. I may not necessarily agree with him on everything but I recognize that he is possessed of strong leadership qualities. He is admirable but most importantly he is the President of our country. Oh right not your country. You don’t have a country. Small wonder.

Best Actor

When I first heard it on the news I thought it was a joke. I can’t help but wonder about the thought process behind it. Smackdab and John pretty much disrespect the man because he is a Democrat. Okay, John at least articulates his problem with his policies and those problems aren’t related to his birth certificate etc.I on the other hand have no problem with him being a Democrat, support some of his policies and even understand the rationale behind others, even if I think they are misguided, and I am still floored by this.

Let’s bring back “cash for clunkers”

I wasn’t enthralled with the Cash for Clunkers program but in the interest of fairness one misconception needs to be cleared up. The Cash for Clunkers program did help American Automakers. US auto sales plunged 22% after the program ended. The program helped them improve their market share by 3% climbing from 40 to 43%. The Asian market slipped from 52% to 46%. I know the gains weren’t much but it does refute the allegation that the program was a boon to the Asian market.

Pathetic

Voting based strictly on one issue is extremely shortsighted. I can see placing it as your number 1 priority but to ignore all else as long as the person held the position on national security that you think is best does not seem reasonable. Would you vote for a person whose national security stance mirrored your own but believed the country should move more towards communism I doubt you would vote for him or her.

Anyway, the Republican Party has not demonstrated that it is best positioned to ensure national security. They just talk rah rah better. Just out of curiosity what exactly is your position on national security? What do you think Obama should be doing that he is not? It seems to me that you spend most of your time criticizing Obama because of his social policies and you admit that he hasn’t undone the national security policies of the Bush Administration so your issue with him does not appear to be with his stance on national security.

So, how’s that stimulus working out for you?

So how do we define service to the country? Military people obviously. Government workers? Policemen? Firemen? Doctors and nurses who keep our country healthy? School personnel that educate? Military wives -well mothers as a whole-who devote themselves to raising the next generation? Inventors and Wall Street Capitalist who produce goods and fund the production that keeps are economy going? All of these people serve our country. They just do it in different ways.

You know Obama’s background. Knowing if his name was changed by his mother is really getting into the weeds. This has nothing to do with honesty. And evidence of what? Get over it! The guy is an American citizen. Name changes does not affect citizenship. You are grasping at straws.

Obama has a country to run. What is important is what he is doing now not what his mother did to him as a child. Transparency applies to what he is doing now not to what his mother did to him as a child. I don’t want the man or any other President to spend all their time discussing their childhood/past rather than focusing on the issues facing us in the present.

Dennis sorry if I over simplified. A child must be registered for school under their legal name but they may use whatever name they wish after that. It is possible for different school administrations to handle that issue in different ways. Obviously they must track the child’s progress and school records would have to reflect the legal name.

» Posted By Fortuneate On 07/October/2009 @ 12:07 am

A mother or father may call their child what they wish without legally changing that child’s name. If the child wants to retain that name then they must ask the court to change it when they reach 18. This is usually done when the noncustodial parent has not waived his or her parental rights. Or a child can be adopted by a step-parent (where the birth parent waives parental rights) and the child does not have to assume the adopted parents last name.

I fail to see what difference it makes if he was adopted or had his name changed. We all know he was raised by his grandparents indicating some problem with the mother/maternalarrangements. How is this a reflection on him? And why is he obligated to share what is probably a painful childhood?

Bricks for the Brits

I don’t care what it was made of –its a pen! We all know that a pen is the standard gift you give when you can’t think of anything else to give. It is not thoughtful. Its safe and its standard.

As for Obama’s gift, if you want a glimpse into the American psyche what better way than to watch American classic films such as Citizen Kane, High Noon, Shane or the Fountainhead.

» Posted By Fortuneate On 28/September/2009 @ 9:22 pm

While it is true that the British press has been writing stories that indicates a cooling off of the “special relationship” the two countries share ever since Obama took office, it appears that this is more of a concerted attack on G. Brown than anything else. Brown is behind in the polls (elections in May) and not very popular in his country.

Which probably explains this:
“After the two heads of state finally had their formal bilateral meeting, a 30-minute sit-down in a side room at the G-20 leaders’ summit which came after they appeared side-by-side at a press conference condemning recently revealed Iranian uranium enrichment activities, Brown lashed out at the British press, accusing them of an “obsession” with the special relationship and urging them to focus on “big issues” and to learn how “diplomacy really works.”

This all started when Obama met with Brown in March and carrying on a tradition the two exchanged gifts. Apparently some British tabloids thought the British gifts were more thoughtful than the American gifts. Brown’s wife gave the Obama girls each a dress and the Obama’s gave the boys each a model of Air Force One. Hmmmm, do you suppose they would have preferred receiving clothes? I can’t think of any red-blooded American boy would not have preferred the air plane model to clothes. Brown gave Obama a pen and some books on Churchill. Obama gave Brown a gift set of 25 American movie classics. Apparently Brown is blind in one eye so this gift was really inappropriate because he is blind in one eye. Gosh I hope my mom the movie buff who is blind in one eye doesn’t find out she is incapable of watching movies! Seriously how snippy (snobbish) can you get?
