Well, I think that there is another reason guys come to the Philippines looking for love and it has to do with the fact that the wallet somehow looks much exponentially bigger than it does in the States. LOLOn a completely different note, Thailand recently began cracking down on visa runs.

One other comment.
I think you should do the Subic to Angeles walk. Swan would probably enjoy it. Hire a car/driver for the whole trek as a support vehicle. That way, you could go as slow are as fast as you wanted. Need to take a break or bypass a particularly challenging stretch? Just hop in the car. Not a race or a competition, so who gives a rats ass how you do it.

Yup, that is a good measure of one’s life.
A lot of those bar names are still around in BKK. Did not realize that Dave had set up camp in BKK prior to coming to the PI.Kudos to Swan on her run, but it doesn’t seem anything out of the ordinary, based on how much you walk already. You should have been there to cheer her on!! LOl

Yeah, I have advocated for getting rid of the penny for a long time. One hundred years ago, the penny had some value. I am almost to the point of getting rid of the nickel also. I would imagine if anyone wanted to do something at that site, the original buildings would have to be razed. Tropical weather is not very nice to structures that are not maintained.Surprising that a place like the Whiterock has never been visited by you. Another one to add to you list. LOL

A bit of a disconnect. Obviously, the locals do not think the same as you do. As you mention, there would probably be a net outflow of people from the PI to places like UK, Australia, US, etc. You are an “immigrant” to the PI. Do you think that the locals look at us “immigrants” the way we sometimes look at immigrants to the US, UK, etc.
I wonder that myself. Do they think, “Brian, he’s a great guy, hands out candy to the kids, slips a few pesos to the homeless lady, etc.” or are they thinking, “Brian, what an a**hole. Comes in here, thinking that by throwing around some money and candy, he can buy himself into our good graces. We don’t need that type of immigrant. What is he contributing to our society?”
Probably they think a bit of both.
When we go into a country and our income is 10x+ the local income, it makes it easy to say that the country is great, people are friendly, etc. How friendly would the people be on the candy walk if you didn’t bring candy? Try it.
I have loved my time living overseas, both in Asia and other places, and could see my self retiring (or at least spending a chunk of the year) overseas. But, we will have to agree to disagree when you say that the PI (overall) is better than the US, Australia, etc. In certain circumstances ($ goes further, meeting and dating those of the opposite sex is easier) definitely, but on a macro scale, there is no way.
Anyway, an interesting discussion.

Yup, money is a great insulator from local life in a developing country. We (and I include myself in that) are pretty ignorant of the life a true local leads. We say they are happy and friendly, but who the heck knows what they say behind our back. LOL. I am sure some resent us. But, I am generally an optimist and do believe the most people are good, regardless of whatever country they are from or live in.If all countries around the world had open borders, do you think there would be a net increase or decrease in the Filipino population? My guess would be a decrease. You mentioned previously that you had no desire to visit Europe or Australia/NZ because of the shitholes they have become. I’m curious as why you say that what do you base that on? Do you truly think that they are in worse condition than the PI?

Japan has the most stores in the world, something like 20000. Taiwan has a bunch, maybe the highest per capita at around 7000 stores in a country of 20MM. I think the PI has about 4000. I was surprised that 7-11 has very little presence in Europe. It is interesting (at least for me) to see how global brands lie 7-11 adapt to the individual countries they operate in. John, not sure why you don’t take a trip back to the US. I know you have said that your family back there isn’t making any efforts towards reconciliation. They may be thinking the same thing, though about you. And realistically, it is a lot easier for you to go there than the other way around. Somebody has to make the effort – it might as well be you. Ummm, obviously I wasn’t there and don’t know exactly how you reacted, but it does seem like you were a bit of an a-hole. It certainly is not fraud on their part. There have been numerous cases will a store will print a coupon saying something is on sale for e.g. $1.99 when it should have been $199.99 and the store is not required to honor it. For example, the SOB could have had leftover coupons from months ago, etc. and there was no intention from Whiskey Girl validate them. I get it – it’s the principle, but on the other hand, it is $10 bucks and was it worth getting your blood pressure up?Doing a 10,000 foot psychological analysis, I would recommend that you take a break from SE Asia for X period (with X = 1 week, 2 weeks, whatever). I think you need to get out of the whole SEA bubble for a bit. You have been in it too long without a break. Previous trips – all to SE Asia. Your upcoming trip to Vietnam – still in the bubble. Trips outside of Barreto to other places in the PI – still in the bubble. Go to the US, north Asia, Europe, Aus/NZ, etc. I don’t think you have been out of SEA for 7(?) years or so.
Maybe even something like a (Mediterranean) cruise. I like cruises. A floating hotel that visits interesting places. You can do as much or as little as you want. Hey, when beer o’clock is over, it is just a matter of a few steps from the ships bar to the elevator/stairs to your room.
Anyways, hope you are not offended by me interjecting. 😛

Yeah, it was held too often. Weekly is way too frequent for something like that. Hard to keep it fresh. The bar of Nana Plaza in Thailand (and maybe some of the other red light districts) used to have a VERY irregular dance contest. Maybe held a couple times a year. Always really well attended. Dont know if it was just a lot of work to put together or if the proprietors were smart enough to know that making something scarce seems to make it more valuable, but it worked there.(I was expecting to see you in your zombie office worker costume. I thought that was kind of a tradition. LOL)

Couple of linked posts that were quite the downer. But, that is life sometimes I guess.
As long as you are comfortable that you have found companionship rather than love, that is not a bad thing after all the trials and tribulations you have had when you were searching for love. As we have talked before on your blog, relationships at the most base level are transactional. Just spitballing, but my guess is that with Loraine for example, she was looking for someone to adopt her kid, and probably knew that you were not willing to do that.
Anyway, as you often say, you are still here to enjoy the life you do have. Be grateful for the things you have rather than unhappy about the things you don’t.

You hit the nail on the head. Money helps smooth over a lot of the irritants present in a third world country. Examples for yourself is paying your helper go and wait to obtain appointments for you, having a car/driver at your disposal, etc..Being a poor expat in the third world country; those are the guys that are always at the bars bitching about what a shithole the PI/Thailand/Vietnam, etc. is and how much they hate being there. They usually dont have the funds to return to their home country so have nothing better to do than drink cheap beer and complain. LOL

Been a semi regular reader of Stickman also. I thought he always had some interesting stuff. Once he went back to NZ, he mentioned pretty frequently that it was difficult to crank out a weekly column from overseas.

I am sure that some people burn plastic waste also, though probably the majority just toss it. Anyway, there is a video floating around of a group intentionally capturing the smoke emitted from a (small) burning pile of plastic trash. Nasty nasty stuff. Not sure it is worse than just tossing it to the side. I agree with what you said in your original blog post. Hearing people speaking in a foreign language almost always sounds louder. Recently in a doctors office and they had these chairs that were wider than a normal chair and looked a bit uncomfortable for one person as the arm rests were pretty far apart, but definitely too small to fit two people. Took me a while to figure out that they were for one plus sized person. @John @Kevin. Thanks. No damage. The friend I was with, she saw me start to fold up and was able to ease me down to the ground. Weird thing is that I had one of those “micro dreams” in the 30 seconds or so I was out of it.
I for sure drank more than 1 liter. Had a 20 oz water bottle with me and drank at least 40 oz. Can’t remember if I refilled it only once or twice.
As I said, lesson learned, so need to be more careful about staying hydrated and eating nuts, granola, M&M’s etc while on long walks. This was the furthest I have ever walked in one go. I have a “normal” walk I do around Lake Geneva (no, not the one in Switzerland, but in Wisconsin LOL) and that is a shade under 22 miles. I guess the extra 5 miles did me in.

Did at @Kevin Kim style walk this past weekend. ~42km doing the GreenCircleTrail.org that encircles Stevens Point, WI. Made it through the walk with no problem (8.5 hours total time). Went back to the hotel with no problem. Walked the short distance to a pub/restaurant okay. Enjoying a beer at the bar, started feeling light headed and the next thing I knew, I was on the floor (and not because of alcohol). LOL. 99% sure it was dehydration. Day was relatively cool, so didnt feel sweaty and definitely didn’t drink enough. Fortunately, all’s well that ends well, but lesson learned.Re: PI burrito

John, in your current iteration, you remind me of a guy I used to work with in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. He pretty much hit the expat bars early and left by 7 or 7:30. Always mentioned how he was surprised that the bars stayed in business as he was usually the only customer.
I wonder how much of a different vibe the Barretto bars have later in the evening vs. late afternoon/early evening.
Re: Cheap Charlies – I am generally a pretty forgiving person, the waitress could have just been having a bad day when you saw her last. There have been times when I have said/done something I regret, and it would have been disappointing if the person held a grudge forever based on one interaction. But, you are spoiled for choice there, so if one bar pisses you off, I guess that there are a multitude of others to fill the void.

I agree with your usage of cross country. Ran all through high school and four years of college, and never once did I see it written as cross-country. Sometimes, it was written as X-country, and occasionally I would see the hyphen applied there, but that was about it.

John may just be ahead of his time. Language and grammar usage are always evolving. For example, I read somewhere that in ~1900, the words “today” and “tomorrow” were written to-day and to-morrow.
